We should certainly be thankful of all the awesome experiences we’ve had this past year as we look forward to the New Year. track schedule will see a little bit of a shake up, at least to the dates. Our May season opener Driver’s school at Mid-Ohio will be the third weekend of April, much earlier than usual, which will position us as the first PCA region of the year, and will, I think, increase the anticipation for our event, which for years has been third in a row of our Ohio Porsche clubs. Nationwide Insurance took our August date for their piddly little NASCAR thing, so this year the Club race weekend will be July 6th through 8th, - it is essentially a Fourth of July Club race! Americans love racing on the 4th and I absolutely think that we’ll do great with this date and predict that it can become a strong tradition on the PCA schedule. Putnam’s DE is going to be the biggest adjustment with a move all the way to early October! Candidly I think this will work out great because over the years the extreme weather (mostly heat with one bizarre weekend of winter in July) has lessened the excitement for his otherwise righteously fun weekend at what is simply a jewel of a track. Only Nelson Ledges stays the same on the Schedule (mid June) and that is fine since even MORPCA-ites know better than to tinker with perfection! At least for a while.... It is probably easy to take for granted, but your Porsche club is a remarkable group. Not every car club does the things that we do, nor has the type of camaraderie that we share. We put on four pro-caliber track events a year, a full schedule of Autocross, Tech events at world class facilities, mid-week socializers, a National Race at one of the best tracks in the nation, and just about the biggest single marque car show in the world. Then we cap it off at the end of the year with a grand ballroom gala to celebrate. Most people don’t get to do this sort of stuff. The one common focal point here are the people who put all these things together: Yes, I’m talking about YOU! MORPCA is such an extraordinary group of people! I’m not sure I’ll ever completely understand how all these strong personalities mix so well, but it’s been going on for nigh fifty years, so clearly this has a way of regenerating. I guess these cars of ours just have a special appeal to highly capable, fun loving people. Obviously, though, all this awesomeness is fueled by You-Power and the club always needs fresh ideas. Consider coming for dinner at the board meeting and sharing your thoughts! With a heavy heart I must make you aware of the passing of one of our most fun-loving people. Chris Allison left this world on November 15th, and will be greatly missed. Chris’ quick wit and irreverent sense of humor always added fun wherever he went and his enthusiasm was immense. He was a friend to all who knew him. Our sympathies go to Trina and their three lovely daughters. Let his passing be a reminder as you celebrate the Holidays not to take too much for granted. I am happy that our P2O in Granville was so well received and I am also truly pleased that our Club race was the big success this year as it has been in the past. Both of our signature events are at their rightful positions of excellence. And we will continue that tradition this year, with a few tweaks as usual- we are tinkerers at our core. This year’s Best Wishes to you all; and as always, I look forward to seeing you soon. 5 The Board Elected Officers PRESIDENT * VICE PRESIDENT * TREASURER * SECRETARY * John Brandt Michael Stoner Kevin Hennessy Betsy MacDonell 3042 Crescent Drive 4200 Dublin Rd. 716 Curve Rd. 320 Medick Way Columbus, OH 43204 Columbus, OH 43221 Delaware, OH 43015 Worthington, Ohio 43085 (614) 275-1744 (614) 777-8751 (740) 369-1595 (614) 885-8413 [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] NEWSLETTER EDITOR * MEMBERSHIP * ACTIVITIES * DRIVING EVENTS * Bill Slone Trina Allison Gerhard Hillmann Frank Todaro 690 Tami Sue Ct. 4171 Bidle Ct. 121 S. The race was exciting, the weather was perfect, and the track was expertly laid out. Viewing was excellent from several areas, including the General Admission areas. One of the support races was the Porsche Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA West. As usual, the Porsche races were very entertaining, especially considering the drivers had only one practice session and one qualifying session on a brand new track before their race! We ventured up to turn one for the race (before it was closed off due to too many spectators), and witnessed a very competitive race. You should definitely make plans to visit the Circuit of the Americas facility. If you don’t want to fight the F1 crowds, there are Grand Am and American Le Mans events scheduled for 2013. Bill 7 IRAC 6 Autocross 10/20/12 Consol Field, Washington, PA Article by Mike Tepley The alarm clock went off quite early- it must have been 4:30am or so. This is not an unusual phenomenon for anyone who participates in Porsche Club events. Sometimes family commitments, jobs and other social activities come up and you have to do what you have to do to participate. The forecast was calling for 35% chance of precipitation so not hearing any raindrops as the alarm was silenced was a good sign. The streets were still wet and no stars could be seen but it was time to go. Surprisingly, the wipers went unused all the way to Washington, PA. Things were looking pretty good for an autocross this late in the season. And now for the weather- both run groups dealt with slightly damp conditions in the morning runs with the course mostly drying out. After lunch however, more rain. The first run group in the afternoon had to contend with a pretty wet course and times were not falling as they usually do. The second run group benefitted from some sun and as the afternoon wore on times began to drop. In fact it was interesting to look at the final statistics with the first run group typically being faster in the morning and the second run group faster in the afternoon. But that is the way the autocrosses go. The final autocross of the 2012 season was hosted by the Allegheny Region. It was nice to welcome them back after a several year hiatus. Rob Hoffman and crew have put on a total of 3 autocrosses this year in their region and are starting to build a real following in the area for autocross once again. 25 cars had pre-registered and another 14 showed up to make a nice field of 39, with 18 being our favorite brand. We had 4 water pumper 911’s with one being a turbo and another with all wheel drive, 4 Boxsters, 8 air cooled 911’s, a 924s and a 944 turbo. Allegheny used a nice PA system to announce the drivers and their times sometimes providing humorous editorial comments as well such as when a car took out a bunch of cones or did a nice spin or tail swap. Due to the often wet weather there was no shortage of cars slip sliding around. One of the best moments of the autocross was when MOR’s Dave Wenger took out two cones that wedged themselves like fangs to the front of his 911. It was a real nice Halloween treat for all those who got a peek. We are really glad Allegheny Region is back in the IRAC series and their ability to offer well run and enjoyable events like this one is a real plus for the series. This event wraps up autocross for the season. We hope to see many more coming out for autocross in 2013. Don’t be shy we’d love to have you come out and enjoy your car with us. The course was laid out in the parking lot of the Consol Field baseball park. It was a pretty nice lot with hills all around it with some challenges like wet spots and areas of loose gravel. The course was rather quick starting on a slight uphill which immediately took drivers to the left and into a short 3 cone slalom. After the slalom the course opened up and it was a mostly straight run to a very large arching right hand turn which allowed those that knew how to drift a bit to do so. The course then continued right making a full circle at a crossover and then a series of offset gates put the drivers to the left and the course slowed down a bit to the finish. This course was fast with the quickest times in the low 30 second range. 8 December 2012 IRAC 6 Autocross Results Porsche Scoring Driver / Year, Make and Model (Car #)................................................................... Their books would make great Christmas presents to give or for your own reading pleasure. Nancy Roe Pimm grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where she rode buses and subways. Cars were not important to her. Little did she know that someday she would marry a race car driver, Ed Pimm. They married in 1977 and moved to Columbus where Ed raced for Jim Trueman’s Truesports team. Today they are the proud parents of three daughters, Allison, Lindsay, and Carli. Allison and Lindsay both married in 2006, welcoming two young men into their family, Rusty and Jason. Nancy and her family reside in Dublin, Ohio on a five-acre horse farm. She shares her home with four horses, three dogs, three cats, and Monty Python, the snake. Nancy has written 4 children’s books. Two are about Ed’s racing career – at the Indy 500 in 1985, 1986, & 1987 and in the Daytona 500. The other two are about Nancy’s love of gorillas and her volunteer work at the Columbus Z00. All four titles are available from www.Amazon.com The Daytona 500: The Thrill and Thunder of the Great American Race (Feb 2011) Colo’s Story: The Life of One Grand Gorilla (Jan 2011) The Heart of the Beast: Eight Great Gorilla Stories (Jan 2007) Indy 500: The Inside Track (Nov 2004) Scott Good, lives with his wife and children In Columbus, Ohio where he is the President of two companies; Teamwork Solutions, an internationally-known software development firm, and GOODAero, which focuses on bringing professional-quality aerodynamic products to amateur racing drivers. Scott is a two-time National Champion road racer, the National Director for the National Auto Sports Association’s German Touring Series, and has published more than 70 articles on topics ranging from software development to automobile racing techniques. Scott’s newly published first novel Loss of Control, is set in Columbus and at the Mid-Ohio track. Jake Berwyn watches in horror as his best friend dies in a racing accident that Jake blames himself for causing. When he later learns the accident was anything but accidental, he becomes determined to solve his friend’s murder. The story which follows details Jake’s quest to find his friend’s killer while embroiled in a plot which twists its way through real estate, finance, sex, and automobile road racing. It culminates in a final and surprising confrontation following a gripping race against time. Filled with vivid portrayals of fascinating characters, Loss of Control keeps you guessing all the way to its action-packed ending. Loss of Control is available from www.Amazon.com 11 COVERSTORY Great Weather Provides Backdrop for the MORPCA Chili Cook-Off Photos by Doug Harris and Bill Slone In addition to swapping stories about upcoming winter projects (that may or may not happen), members viewed each other’s cars along with Ron Thomas’s wide range of rare and collectable Porsches. Ron Thomas and Diana Spiers hosted the “Almost Annual” Chili Cook-Off this year at their home on a beautiful sunny fall day. Several members attended and cleaned up their Porsches for the car show in addition to creating their own world famous chili recipes. This year, Patrice Hennessy took the Best Chili crown. Virginia Huffman was awarded with the best dessert, beating out a cheese cake that featured a chocolate Carrera! Thanks to Ron and Diana for inviting us to their house and going out of their way to make us feel welcome. By the way, the German Riesling wine was excellent! 12 December 2012 Patrice Hennessy Takes Best Chili Honors! 13 MORPCA Monthly Board Meeting Minutes October 10, 2012 Submitted by Betsy MacDonell, Secretary DOS has all the details. Third Thursday’s have concluded for the season. The Holiday Party details are set with 3 entrée choices. The invites will be sent out and ask for an RSVP with an entrée choice. John reiterated his desire for a trap shooting event for one of the club activities. Members present; Brian Peterson, John Brandt, Trina Allison, Betsy MacDonell, Jeff Brubaker, Ron Thomas, Kevin Hennessy, Gerhard Hillmann and Chip Henderson. The meeting was held at King Avenue Five Restaurant and Sports Lounge and started at 6:30pm. The minutes from the September meeting were approved. John started the meeting off with the fact that the Holiday Party date needs to be changed in DOS to Saturday, December 8th. The minutes from the September meeting were approved. John received correspondence for PCA Executive Director about how membership records were being handled at the region level. John reported that he and Jet presented the charity check to the City Life Center recently. A complete tour of the facility was given to them and of special interest was the automotive education shop. The students learn how to work with tools and on cars. This school is in Franklinton and it helps show the kids that there is a way of life beyond their immediate scene. The school tries to teach “fundamentals of society behavior”. The next check presentation was at the charter school called Harambee Christian School. Both John and Jet observed that since the school has started, the transitional neighborhood has changed in a positive ways. This school is project of the Xenos church. The third charity check was presented to the Heizerling Foundation. The money will be used to enhance the quality of life of the residents including field trips. Some residents will live their whole lives at the foundation and these things will be greatly appreciated. Photos were taken at all locations. The charity funding calculation is now made on 28% of club money remaining after all bills are paid at the end of the year. In 2011 MORPCA gave 4K and in 2012 MORPCA gave 6K. The charity donations from P2O are a separate situation. Ron was able to get 20 volunteers at the last minute from a charity in Newark by agreeing to donate 1K. A motion to pay 1K to the Housing Coalition of Newark was made by Ron and seconded by Kevin. The motion carried. Chip Henderson reports that Frank has a formula for successful driving events for next year. In a nut shell; there will not be a mother’s day DE event, Nelson’s Ledges will be the site of a DE, Club Race will host a DE and it will be in August. The track committee will meet in early November to discuss the little changes that will make the events even better. Frank is going to have hip replacement surgery on November 13 and we know all will go well. One issue that should be included is the inclusion of C/D students in the August event or pair up with another region to include them. The instructor core is aging and another school should be on the calendar soon. Ron gave a rosy report for the 2012 P2O. The Chamber of Commerce for Granville wants the event for next year. Ron also gave a quick update on the PCA Club Race at Daytona. Jeff Brubaker went with him to help. It was a spectacular event and really fun to feel the G-forces on the banked turns. They even found Hurley Haywood’s favorite greasy spoon restaurant. A grand adventure for sure. In the technical end, Jeff has 2 good sessions on the calendar. The first is at Auto Spa and it is about detailing. The second is at Michael Shanks Racing Shop in Pataskala. That will be held on December 1st. The trickle charge events will be held in January, February and March. Membership numbers are looking great. Trina reports 953 total members with 13 non renewals, 13 renewals and 4 new members last month. John candidly took responsibility for the non-renewals because he did not make any phone calls to talk them into staying. A long discussion started about using some of our Club money to purchase a van to not only get supplies to events but also serve as a storage spot for cones. There are many things to consider about vehicle ownership that are obvious but a club ownership? Maybe big events could rent a van for that weekend and use some of the money for better storage shelves in the storage locker. Another idea is to purchase a club trailer to use to haul stuff to events. Then the decision of an open or closed trailer. Any further discussions will have to include Jim Rybek. Right now he uses his trailer to get big bulky supplies to events such as cones to IRAC events. The whole topic was shelved for another meeting. The election for 2013 MORPCA Board Officers is set for the annual meeting (as usual). The slate is dangerously familiar too. The 2013 slate of officers is: John Brandt; President, Mike Stoner; Vice President, Kevin Hennessy; Treasurer and Betsy MacDonell; Secretary. All officers expressed a need for more people to fill these roles for 2014 and beyond. The Board members plan to circulate at the annual meeting to find people that want to get more involved. Round Table Discussion • Brian has the website all ready to go with regards to chairpersons posting information about their particular area of interest. He even offered private lessons on how to make posts. Kevin announced that the club is in good shape; in fact it is 23K ahead of this time last year. Now is the time to approach the would be sponsors for next year. Mike has volunteered to talk to MAG again and Ron Thomas will talk to Byers Imports. The issue of advertisers in DOS is looming too. What are the rates for next year, how much color will be used and how will a DOS ad equate to a web ad? Kevin advocates the position of an Advertising Manager (or Coordinator) which would chase down these companies and make sure they stay current with payments. Brian volunteered to help make the color issues of DOS more spectacular. • • Gerhard attended the Mariemont Rally in Cincinnati, an event that had a very similar feel as P2O. He said it was a good time with about 100 cars in attendance. The weather did not cooperate for good attendance. The Escort Radar inventor, Valentine, was there and he is an OVR instructor. He has a Porsche valued at .5M and drives it at events at Mid-Ohio. Kevin had a big adventure in banking of late. He has been signing checks for MORPCA for 3 years and suddenly he was informed that he is not on record for that activity according to the Huntington Bank. So he had to start the account all over again. Brian told everyone about his little mishap with his car at Mid-Ohio. The meeting adjourned at 9:34 pm. The next meeting will be held at King Avenue Five Restaurant and Sports Lounge on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 6:30 pm. The December meeting will convene if the Board deems it necessary after the Annual Meeting. When there is a meeting, plan to meet around 6 pm for pre-meeting fun and visiting. Gerhard began his activities report with the announcement of the Chili Cookoff will be held at Ron Thomas’ and Diana Spires residence this weekend. It will include a casual car show with four categories. The fall foliage driving tour is set for Sunday, October 21st at the Klaubundes in the Hocking Hills.
