DECEMBER 2010 Huber Winery Drive—Oct. 2010 By Steven Rountree This year marked the 10th annual drive to the Huber's Winery on Saturday, October 9th. We had a really nice turn-out of twentythree Porsches. We met in the usual DQ parking lot and then snaked our way out 64W to the Georgetown exit in Indiana. We stopped on Skyline Drive to take in the beautiful view and to take some photos. We had our usual preferred parking in the grass all the way upfront next to the winery. We were joined by some of the Indiana PCA Members. It was a perfect day for a drive and to spend some time with friends. Thanks again to all those who could take the time for one of our Club's annual events. Be sure to check out the online version of the newsletter to see the photos in color. PaceSetter December 2010 Page 3 Saturday Morning Breakfast Social The Saturday morning Breakfast Socials are held the first Saturday after the monthly KyPCA meetings. They are at the Frisch's just off the Watterson (I-264) and Poplar Level Road (exit 14) here in Louisville, first coffee is at 8am. The only purpose is to get together with other Porsche owners for a very informal breakfast and BS session before starting the Saturday 'Honeydoos' . Sometimes there is a Saturday drive or event and this can be the start place. Or maybe we will visit someone's garage for a check on a recent project, being it a car restoration or other project of interest. The breakfast buffet at Frisch's is pretty good or you can order off the menu and they keep the coffee coming. Mark your calendar for the monthly meetings AND the Saturday Breakfast. If you are not a 'meeting' kind of person, surely you can join us for breakfast. Don't forget to drive your Porsche, as we often have parking lot 'tech and admiration' sessions. No reservations required, just show up....Any questions or comments, feel free to contact me. Ken Daugherty PaceSetter December 2010 Page 4 President’s Report Tony Proasi—KY Region President Well 2010 is coming to a close and a new President is stepping forward. PaceSetter December 2010 Page 7 Hilton Head Speedfest Oct. 28, 29, 30 By Richard Collins I traveled to Savannah, GA, on Oct 28 for a long weekend to visit my brother Ken who lives in Bluffton, SC, about 20 miles outside Savannah and close to Hilton Head Island. Together we attended several days of HSR sponsored racing at the little known Savannah Raceway on Hutchinson Island just across the river from downtown Savannah. As most are aware the 2011 Porsche Parade will be held in Savannah. While I have never attended a parade, this one is on my calendar. It is about an 8 or 9 hour drive from Bowling Green and, depending on the route, is a comfortable and scenic trip for the most part. This particular event is part of the Hilton Head Concours held over a 3 weekend period in the fall, a usually comfortable time of the year. The Savannah road course is a track built originally for a Champ car event several years ago and is now very underutilized. While not an expert on tracks, in my view this one is a bit tight and not one for Porsche pushers driving 10/10 in some of the corners. Fortunately, I understand this track will not be used for Parade but rather the DE portion will be held at Roebling Road further up the road from Savannah about 20 miles north. The Roebling track is similar to the Putnam Road course many of us are familiar with having done our club’s Summer Heat and Fall Fest there over the years. My brother has several Porsche’s including a 2009 Carrera S, a 2002 GT2 and a 1974 Carrera in transition to an IROC clone. It has a 3.0L SC engine and several go-fast goodies already installed. I own his previous IROC clone, a 1975 Carrera with a 3.2L in it. We drove his 1974 during the noon parade lap session (cost $20 for charity) and got in 10-15 laps albeit not at great speed of course. However, later in the day we paid $50 (also for charity) and each drove several hot laps with Hurley Haywood in a 2010 stock Carrera S, a highlight of the trip. He is obviously a legendary driver and the stock Carrera S on the track with street tires and under his smooth guidance was spectacular. If anyone has a similar opportunity to get a track stint with Hurley, do not pass it up! The track events were very good although the quantity of cars entered was low, but of high quality. The Enduro was won by an early Mazda GTP car with a dual rotary 1.3L engine, followed very closely by a Chevy Monza, several Cayman spec racers and a pair of 914-6 trackmeisters. The event also included several vintage motorcycle track bikes and open wheel cars. The Savannah venue for the 2011 Porsche parade will be excellent. The area is full of southern charm, southern cooking, and southern hospitality. I look forward to returning to the area soon. Nothing really exciting this month. Still selling some of the excess parts: 356 motors, some rebuilt, some rebuildable and several disassembled and kept together in green fiberglass storage tubs, sorting thru the 356 tool rolls (my plans are to keep one of each generation and sell the spares). I also have a healthy library of Porsche books that will be listed (didn't realize how many duplicates I have). Stay tuned :-) Progress on the '59 Cabriolet is coming along. The floors are in and the wreck damage at the rear has been stretched back in line. Slow going. John and Shelly Howe have a new ride. John found a '59 Conv D in Ann Arbor and he and Andy drove up to inspect it and bring it back. It is black on black and a very nice example... Minor changes will bring it to a national class 356. Congrats John. Nothing pleases me more than to go to the garage on a Sunday morning with a cup of black coffee and tune the radio to local WFPK and their jazz programming. That adds to the pleasure of working on a 356 motor. Total relaxation. Good for the soul. Recently I was listening and heard a very unusual rendition of 'Unchained Melody' in a jazz format. I liked it so much I called the station to find the artist etc so I could get a CD of it. Later I called Ear X-tacy and asked about it and they didn't have it in stock but could order it. A week later they called and said it was not available but they could find a used copy, I said OK as long as it was a playable copy. Still waiting on it. What is it? The group is 'Lester Bowie Brass Fantasy' and the CD is 'When the Spirit Returns'. Weather is turning and its time to take a couple of driving tours thru the Kentucky back roads and enjoy the color. Whether you drive with a group or alone, just do it. Actually I like solitary tours, some folks tend to make the tours a race to prove how fast their cars are. Frankly I couldn't care less how fast 'your' car is, don't need to prove it to me. If 'you' want to race, sign up for a SCCA SoloII. You don't get bragging rights just for arriving at a restaurant destination first. Recently I saw on the internet how the Russian Navy resolved a hijacking. They overcame the hijackers and recaptured the ship. When they boarded the Somali ship they found firearms and RPG's. Of course the hijackers claimed they were innocent fishermen. The Russians tied the hijackers to their boat and set it on fire, solving that issue. No courts, no lawyers. Done. I have heard that international shipping laws forbid merchant ships to arm themselves. How stupid. Arm the ships, train the crews and defend the ship and ask questions later. Remember history and how Thomas Jefferson resolved the Barbary Pirate problem. That's how the line in the Marine hymn about Shores of Tripoli came to be. I do want to mention that Thanksgiving came early this year. 2 November. I also note that the CJ is so blatantly partisan that it is disgusting. It is the largest newspaper in Kentucky and many read their editorials as gospel. Lally wrote a commentary and the very next day the letters to the editor proved that many readers and letter writers are heavily into the CJ Kool (Continued on page 13) PaceSetter December 2010 Page 12 Aid. Personally I applaud anyone that has served in the military, any branch. It gives them a perspective that a non veteran cannot ever have. Personally, I think when a court issues a, EPO (Emergency Protective Order) it is basically a useless piece of paper, they should also provide the woman (they are usually the folks needing protection) with fast track handgun training, a Concealed Carry Permit, and issue them a pistol. Then let the general public know that an EPO also provides her with a means to protect herself until the police arrive. I see too many reports of folks getting killed and the EPO is a joke. Put some teeth in it....But that's just me.... Ken Daugherty [email protected] PaceSetter December 2010 Page 13 THE MART The Mart Rules The Mart Ads are free to all PCA members.
