August kicked off with our monthly Breakfast Club in
Seal Beach. Our Cone Zone car of the month was the 356.
We had an excellent turnout of beautiful examples of the
model. We also had a great overall turnout overall with
more than 80 members and more than 70 cars.
Glory Days has turned out to be a fantastic place for us
to gather every month. I encourage everyone to please
buy breakfast. Buying breakfast is what gives Glory Days
incentive to host us. It’s good for us, because we get to stay
there. The menu will be adding some healthy items soon.
Last month I mentioned that I was going to Monterey for
car week, after an absence of 22 years (after 20 consecutive
years). Here are a few notes from this year:
Tuesday, August 16th: Drove to Santa Barbara via PCH
and stayed overnight.
Wednesday, August 17th: Left Santa Barbara 7:30 AM.
San Marcos Pass (CA-154) to Highway 1. Fantastic drive
with the McLaren right behind, up the beautiful California
Coast. A little overcast but still quite breathtaking. Some
unofficial spirited driving (nothing crazy, but a hell of a lot
of fun). Arrived in Carmel around 1:00 PM.
Thursday, August 18th: Went to Monterey to check out a
couple of auction previews. Lots of really nice cars waiting
to go on the block. At the Portola Hotel, they had the very
first Shelby Cobra on display. Back in Carmel, we checked
out the cars from the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance. Cars
from the Concours do a driving tour around the peninsula,
then park on Ocean Avenue, the main street. There were
many beautiful cars. Duesenberg, Ford GT40, Rolls Royce,
Ferrari, Bizzarinni, Jaguar, Aston Martin and, of course,
quite a few Porsches.
Friday, August 19th: Werks Reunion at Rancho Canada
Golf Club. I registered to display my 2003 Seal Grey
Boxster. Arriving at 6:30 AM, there were already 50 or 60
cars placed. I was directed to the corral and the line for
Boxsters and Caymans. As the day progressed the place
filled up with, from what I understand, close to 1000
Porsches. There was a beautiful display of six Club Coupes,
and Michelin had a display with the new 718s.

Saturday, August 20th. Morning started at the Mclaren
Hospitality in Bernardus Winery in Carmel Valley. There
were many McLaren 570s there that people were invited
to drive up Laureles Grade. They also had Bruce Mclaren’s
first F1 car, two World Championship F1 cars (Niki Lauda’s and Emerson Fittipaldi’s) as well as Denny Hulme’s
Championship Can-Am car.
After that we headed to the Concorso Italiano. What can I
say. There were a few hundred of some of the most beautiful examples of Italian cars: Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa,
Fiat, Maserati, and more.
Sunday, August 21st. Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance.
We arrived before the crowds at around 7:30 AM. We ran
into quite a few people we know and took in the sight of
some of the most beautiful examples of cars anywhere in
the world. After that, it was off to the McLaren hospitality
building. That’s right, they built a temporary structure right
on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach.
My take away from this trip was what most of us there
had in common: the love of the automobile. We met a lot
of people; there is instant comradery. We made some new
friends and saw lots of old ones. We’ll definitely go back
again next year.
Our annual tour from La Cañada to Wrightwood is on
September 17th. Last year we had to cancel due to a
landslide, but the road is open this year, and we’re looking
forward to a great drive. We’ll wind up the tour in Wrightwood at the Grizzly Café. They have a very nice patio and
the food and service is very good.
Here’s a teaser for October. Day Away on October 10th
at Streets of Willow and on the 15th, a tour of the Citrus
Historical Park/March Air Force Museum in Riverside.

“Fly low and avoid the radar”

September already. We have certainly been busy in GPX,
and if you check out the calendar, there is a lot more coming up.
I had the experience of retiring from my business, yesterday, actually. I'm not sure just how things are going to
change, but I did find myself at my desk doing the same
things I've always done. I probably need to check in with
my now ex-partner and new owner of Priority Door &
Window Products to see if I'm going to get paid for this
(LOL). I certainly expect to see my time and responsibilities cut back considerably. I expect to act more as a backup
for Mike, handle a few administrative things and, we'll just
see how it goes.
Suesan and I are starting this new phase with a busy September. We're leaving for a two week road trip to Colorado
and Utah. I'm driving (for the first time) the High Plains
track just east of Denver. We'll then have four days to
make a liesurely drive up the east side of the Rockies, into
Wyoming on our way to Tooele (two-el-a), just outside
of Salt Lake City, where I'll drive in the PCA Club Race
at Miller, now known as Utah Motorsports Campus after
the ownership change last year. We're back home for just
a couple of days before I fly to Washington, DC to attend
(as editor and not a driver) the PCA Club Race at Summit
Point, another track I have never been two.

I'm going to Summit Point becasue Club Racing is doing
something new... the first run group dedicated to vintage
race cars. We're pretty excited about it. Registration for
this group is good. It should be a lot of fun. October starts
out with our Breakfast Club, and the second weekend of
the month has up at Streets of Willow for our PCA DE
Instructor Training (Sunday) and our Day Away from
Work on Monday.
I think I'll take the rest of October and pretend that I'm
retired.

From Oranges to Airplanes
Saturday October 15
The California Citrus State Historic Park in Riverside is where
we begin. We will learn about the history of the Southern California
Citrus industry
Beginning in 1873 the Navel Orange spread throughout the area.
The Park is surrounded by a working grove with over 70 varieties.
Arrive at 8:30. Free “Taste and Grove Walking Tour” begins at 9:00.

Angeles Crest to Vasquex Rocks Tour

The drive along Angeles Crest is 43 miles of iconic, Los Angeles mountain driving, and the Grand
Prix Region drives it every year. This year the road was closed at Mile 28 due to a land slide, but
there are other roads leading off to other interesting places. One of those is the geological formation of Vasquez Rocks.
Twenty-three cars left La Canada to climb Angeles Crest Highway towards the Mount Wilson
Observatory that had been visited for a night viewing only a month before. At the junction with
Angeles Forest Highway the cars turned left for a long, twisting descent. Reaching the northern
base of the San Gabriel Mountains, the route wound up and down various canyons until reaching
the Vasquez Rocks Natural Park.
Vasquez Rocks is a striking geological formation of many uses. Its name comes from its use as a
hideout for many nineteenth century bandits, primarily Tiburcio Vasquez. Later it reformed from
hideout to movie set as the back drop beginning with many early western movies and others such
as the 1935 Werewolves of London to Blazing Saddles and Ghost Busters. Even TV got in the
act from Outer Limits to The Big Bang Theory. Now a Los Angeles County Park, this is all highlighted in the excellent Interpretive Center, which also covers the local history, geology, climate,
flora and fauna.
After the Interpretive Center most of the cars took to the dirt to drive out to the rocks (Some did
not want to get their cars dirty). Staking out some tables with a little bit of shade, most brought
picnic lunches. Some climbed the rock, but all enjoyed the beautiful view of many Porsches lined
up in front of the rocks.
You can get a feel from the photos what a spectacular place this is. It is just one of hundreds (probably thousands) of beautiful places that we are blessed with in Southern California.

Our August Breakfast Club meeting probably had the highest attendance
of any this year. There had to be upwards of a hundred people, and the
356 Cone Zone was so big they all wouldn't fit.

Suesan and I brought our '65 SC Cab up from San Diego for this meeting,
partially because of Cone Zone, but more because we wanted to honor the
memory of our friend, Roy Lock, who recently passed away. Roy was a
GPX officer decades ago, and if you were around this club for very long,
or if you had anything to do with the 356 community, you knew Roy. If
you were lucky enough to be on his email list you got regular information about these cars. And I'm not talking about "how many were made in
what years", stuff you can find in any book. Roy would consistently let us
know about how to repair obscure parts, send us factory literature that we
never saw before, and it never stopped.
Not only was Roy a wealth of information, but he loved to share it. A fabulous "amateur" photographer, Roy has provided photos not only for this
publication, but for the 356 Registry, local 356 club and others. He was
probably as well known in aviation circles for his av pics. Roy had passion for the things he loved, not the least of which was his family. Seeing
Roy without his son Frank was rare, and Frank seems to have developed
the same love for 356s as his dad had.
We just wanted to let everyone know how much we appreciate Roy
throughout his long involvement with Porsches. If there was anyone who
eptiomized the saying "Keep the Faith", it was Roy Lock.
There was so much going on and so many people at this month's breakfast, I've had to expand it from the typical two pages to six. Special
presentations from Tom Burns (Stan Burns Insurance) and Mark Aguirre
(Epic Auto Detailing) made it a full and informative morning.

Owner (and club member) Mark Aguirre did a demonstration after our
Breakfast Club meeting in August. Michael Dolphin volunteered his 996
for the project and Mark demonstrated the "two bucket car wash method"
and how to wash your car without leaving swirl marks when you are done.
A large group hung around after breakfast to watch. We got to see how a
well equipment mobile detail outfit does the job.

GPX Summer BBQ

Our annual summer BBQ (well, third year in a row now) is
a pretty nice event and perk for Grand Prix Region members and our friends.
First of all, Barbara Gillam opens her beautiful, spacious
Ladera Heights home to us. Secondly, Arturo Chaparro and
Jeff Peck make sure we have great BBQ to eat (and plenty
of it). Arturo also makes sure that all of the little details are
taken care of... plates and utensils, ice and ice chests, beverages, napkins, etc., etc. Dave Hockett made sure we had
a wonderful live jazz band to played and sang great music
all afternoon. Then there was the fact that this is a no cost
event, a gift to our members and their friends and families
doesn't hurt. Add to that a comfortably warm summer day
and lots of great Porsche friends, and what more could you
ask for?

Champion of the World: How Jackie Stewart, Matra and Racing Blue Made it to the Top
by Edouard Seidler, published 1970 by Automobile Year
Champion of the World is largely a picture book. It
has no table of contents and no index, at least in part
because the pages are un-numbered. It does have pages
of text interspersed within the pages of largely full-page
pictures. The text introduces the situations depicted in
subsequent pages and the pictures provide an insight
into a long lost era – when motor sport was a sport, not
a business (pardon the blatant bias of this 'ol phart').
The ostensible subject of this book
is the 1969 Formula 1 season,
when a Scottsman (Jackie Stewart)
cinched the world championship
driving a French car (Matra) for a
team managed by an Englishman
(Ken Tyrell). It is the pictures that
make this book significant. They
show a time when an ordinary
spectator can have physical contact
with a World Champion (to be, or
in fact); can touch his car; when
race photographers take pictures of
drivers at speed where you can see the whites of their
eyes. This book, perhaps because of its French Connection tends to present arty images (i.e. cover shot), rather
than sharp photos of cars frozen in time. Also included
are snap shots of drivers faces and cockpits. Notably,
captions are provided for only a few of the pictures.
Champion of the World begins with mention of how
Matra expanded from airplane bodies, to missiles, to
cars, to racing in Formula 3. Next comes the formation of Elf as an oil company, and the creation of the
Matra-Elf team of Formula 2 and 3 cars, secretly eyeing
Formula 1. Though not dealt with in detail, the Matra
racing story is amazing: In October, '64, an aerospace
company buys Bonnet, a very small manufacturer of unremarkable cars, the Djets. In less than 4 years, and only
14 months on the Formula 1 project, Matra's systems
engineering approach results in a Formula 1 win, with a
car using engine, transmission and suspension designed,

and largely built, in-house. A
story worth much more coverage
than it is given in this book.
Stewart came into Matra's Formula 3 program with Ken Tyrell,
or maybe it was the other way
around. It was not all smooth sailing from there, but
Jackie Stewart did come in second in the
World Championship during Matra's first
year in Formula 1. Matra also made a significant showing in the '68 Le Mans despite
only being pressured into participating at
the last minute. In 1969, Le Mans became
the major focus for Matra, leaving Ken
Tyrell pretty much to his own devices with
Formula 1. Ironically, Matra-Elf's Le Mans
cars were DNF, whereas Tyrell's cars made
Stewart Champion of the World.
The actual discussion of the 1969 Formula
1 races is strangely brief. This is in part due
to the fact that the season was basically dull: Stewart
starts; Stewart wins. After only 6 of 9 races, Stewart
cinches the World Championship. Some exciting moments are described in the two pages of text relative to
Stewart's F1 drives.
With a little over 100, 9-1/2 x 12 inch heavy weight
pages, it is a well produced book. The many double
page pictures are in perfect registry. The text is a small
fraction of the total book, so it is an easy read. It is more
of an overview rather than a complete story of MatraElf racing and Stewart's first world championship.
Champion of the World is not available from Motorbooks, or even Amazon. Searching the internet is
challenging because there have been many individuals
in diverse disciplines written up as “Champion of the
World”. One site that currently has copies (ranging in
price from $6.93 to $83.56) is http://www.alibris.com/
