The Circuit ...and a word or two from the President's seat — Skip Carter We have had so many events, I'm having to spread the coverage of them over a couple of issues of The Circuit. Here in June we're covering the April Day Away from Work event, our May Breakfast Club and the 356 Tech Session at European Collectibles. Roy Lock has also written an article on a Tour he did with the Porsche 356 Club down to Gillespie Field in San Diego. In case you hadn't noticed, one of the great things that the Grand Prix Region does (and other Porsche regions and clubs in the area as well) are these one day tours to some of the most interesting places you'll find in Southern California. In just a week we're taking a tour up Angeles Crest Highway (ad on page 6). We already have over 20 cars signed up. It's not too late if you want to come along. Just let us know so we can plan accordingly. There are 25+ Grand Prix Region members signed up for the Porsche Parade in Keystone, Colorado later this month. Not only are we looking forward to spending a week in this beautiful mountain community, but I expect the drive up and back to pass through some awfully pretty country as well. Bryce and Zion National Parks on the way up, and Ouray, Colorado on the way back. Ouray is know as the "Switzereland of the US," in case you didn't know. On the Cover... Jimmie Mitchell did an excellent job catching Marc Bixen's RS America on the track at our most recent Day Away from Work Drivers Ed event at Streets of Willow. You can see a slide show of this and other events on the club website, which Jimmie runs: www.GrandPrixRegion.com The last I heard there were still a couple of slots left for the Parade, but you'd have to call PCA national ASAP to find out. The other big Porsche event (and I do mean BIG) is the Porsche 60th Anniversary celebration at the Monterey Historic Races in August. Having attended the 50th Anniversary there 10 years ago, I can tell you that I've NEVER seen anything like it before. If you are a Porsche enthusiast, there is no better place in the world to be. In July we'll cover the Queen Mary Concours that was just a couple of weeks ago. That event just keeps getting bigger and better. I especially want to thank Bob Weber for bringin the Brumos 934.5 of Peter Gregg to the event. We had people drive from quite a distance just to get a chance to see this car on the lawn. In July we'll have ads for a 2-3 day trip to the Central California area as well as our Octoberfest in September. There are lots of events in the works, so stay tuned. The weather could NOT have been nicer, the corner workers did a great job, registration and tech inspection went smoothly... and there was no lack of smiling faces throughout the day. Something we haven't done in a few years, we ran the track Clockwise with the bowl. We had to rethink our entire pre-grid and timing setup for the Autocross part of the day. Overall we were pleased, and we learned a lot of lessons that will be implemented for our October event. Consensus was... let's do Clockwise again next time!!! Dal Lee Mike Mulligan Nick Perdikaris There are so many volunteers who help make the event run, it's hard to name them all. Peter Ross, Jimmie Mitchell and Richard Elliott for photos. Suesan Way, Kelli Lee, Brita Goldsmith for registration. DeJur ran goodie store. Carlos Chang, Marty Goldsmith, Marty Friedman and Allen Rosenberg managed timing, Barbara Gillam was our announcer, Suesan Way, Dal Lee and Brita Goldsmith worked the grid, Dal Lee, Dan Stern, Greg Schill, Doug Hoffman, David Witteried, Rob Rossito and several others worked tech inspection. Michael Mulligan, Nick Perdikaris and Bruce Colby did track setup and teardown, Mike Mulligan was Chief Driving Instructor. Michael Dolphin was there representing the Zone, and Neil Heimburge was there in his capacity as Zone 8 Autocross Chair. Again, it was a wonderful day, great weather, lots of track time and, as usual, everyone went home with their cars in the same condition as they arrived (possibly with a bit less tire tread). Anaheim St Long Beach, CA 90804 562-301-4929 13 The Circuit Breakfast Club Meeting Report — May 3 by Pete Ross photos by Jimmie Mitchell For the May Breakfast we were greeted with the kind of weather that we’ve come to expect and appreciate in Southern California - sunshine, and plenty of it. As a result, the parking lot of Frisco’s Carhop Grill was full of the finest automobiles in the world… Porsches. And, because of the tech session to be held later in the day, a number of these Porsches were 356s. Usually, as I drive southbound on the 405 Freeway heading towards Frisco’s, I will encounter a Porsche or two, or three on the same freeway, with the same destination. At that point it naturally turns into a caravan to the parking lot. On this day, I was the fifth car to exit on Lakewood Boulevard. It is always a spectacular sight to see several Porsches lined up in front of you. Since we didn’t have to compete with the Festival of Speed this month, we were back to what has become our "normal attendance, which was a tad over 90. As I walked into the restaurant, I was incredibly happy to see Brita Goldsmith, Hazel Hofsess and Susan Moard greeting and signing in everyone as they arrived. We missed them at the front desk last month. Attending the May Breakfast were: Norman Abell, Ruben Archilla & Illary Gomez, Carl Bloom, Jack & Margaret Brown, Joe Burian, Skip Carter, Jack & Ginny Case, Arturo Chaparro, Bill Clevenger, Dale Cunningham, Norma Ann Dawson, Art Day, David Demaria, Jack DiRosario, Rick Eckelman, Richard Elliott, Henry Fella, Gene & Chris Fenton, Frank Filipponio, Albert Franco, Marty Friedman, Steve Glas, Marty & Brita Goldsmith, Jamie Gutierrez, Bill & Cierra Haney, Dave Hockett, Hazel Hofsess, DeWayne Ichiriu, Georgette Jankowski, Merv Janquart, Patricia Johnson, Alvin & Melodi Jones, De Jur, Mike & Karla Jones, Fred & Maxx Kominsky, Bryan Knudsen, Richard Krumwied, David Lalonde, Dal B. Lee, Dominic Lee, Dan Lelchick, Rod Lindsey, Roy Lock, Roger Lubeck, John Marks, Frank Medrano, Phil Millard, Rick Mills, David & Susan Moard, Mitch & Josie Morlan, Mike Mulligan, Pete Novak, Nick Perdikaris, John & Patty Reilly, Herb Reynolds, Jesse Rodriguez, Siegfried & Nellie Roller, Allan Rosenberg, Peter Ross, Leonard & Maia Schenkel, 14 356s in spades! June 09 Greg Schill, Nicholas & Raeshel Seemann, Ron Shanon, Donald G. Spencer, Dan Stern, Steve Sweet, Mike & Margie Takaki, Jim Thomas, Bob S. Turner, Ron Walecki, Suesan Way, Charles Weaver, David Weiss, Rob Wessels, Rod & Taysha Williams and Mike Wilson. Wow, that’s a lot of names to type and alphabetize. I hope I did it correctly. If I omitted anyone, my apologies… And if you show up next month, I’ll make sure I get it right. Attending their first Breakfast Club were Yaw Davis in his 1987 champagne colored 944, Mervin Janquart in his 1980 white 911SC Targa, and Leonard and Maia Schenkel in their 1959 Convertible D. Welcome to the Grand Prix Region. As a reminder, if you have changed addresses, phone numbers or e-mail accounts, please contact PCA National at www.pca.org and update your information. In addition, please notify Skip Carter, [email protected], and Peter Ross [email protected] with the same updated information. We are still missing the current e-mail addresses of many members. Beyond that, we’ll see you at the next Breakfast Club Meeting. 15 The Circuit 2nd Annual PCA-GPX 356 Breakfast and Porsche 356 Club Tech Session by Roy Lock photos by Roy Lock & Jimmie Mitchell The day started with ominous skies. Rain in SoCal! How dare the Weather Gods think of raining on our day! As it turned out, the rains did not come and we had a wonderful turn out at Frisco’s for the PCA Grand Prix Region Breakfast and the Porsche 356 Club Tech Session at European Collectables. Many 356s turned out for breakfast and garage talk. There were some ‘scores’ too. I was surprised when Pete Novak handed me an original 356 T6 fan belt as a gift. This was quite a find as most original fan belts were used and thrown away. This one will go into Roy’s 356 museum of rare parts for future reference. A typical Breakfast Club will have 4-6 356s show up. This month we had over a dozen. We did miss Jesse Rodriquez’s newly completed 1959 Sunroof Coupe. It is in preparation for an upcoming concours. Next year Jesse. Bill Clevenger brought his almost complete restoration of his 1962 S90 Coupe. Quite nice! DeWayne brought his superfast 64 sunroof coupe. The coupe has a punched out 2.0 liter engine. It’ll beat unsuspecting 997 Twin Turbos. Long time PCA member Pete Novak brought his 63 Cabriolet. The newest 356 owner, Dan Lelchuk, drove his 60 Aetna Blue Cabriolet instead of his 997 Twin Turbo. So many members brought their 356s that it was difficult to recognize all the attendees and their cars. After the breakfast there was a quick run down the 405 freeway to European Collectables in Costa Mesa. Over 50 members of PCA and The Porsche 356 Club attended the tech session. Our host, Nick Clemence, gave a tech talk on body restoration and paint. Some members were astounded by the amount of work that goes into just body work prior to paint. We all walked away with an appreciation of the artisans that do body work and paint on our cars. After the tech talk we were able to walk through out the spotless facility. Thanks goes to Nick Clemence, Chris Casler, and the staff of European Collectables for their hospitality. They made our 356 Saturday a success. The success of this event will give us the incentive to plan the 3rd Annual 356 Breakfast and Tech Session. For all those that missed it this year, mark the 1st Saturday in May, 2010 for the next one. 16 June 09 17 The Circuit Book Review for Porschephiles by Bruce Herrington, Riverside Region Porsche 911 - Perfection by Design by Randy Leffingwell This book does not read like a book written by a photographer. Oh sure, it has a lot of pictures, many of which make one wish to have larger copies hanging on the wall. And it contains an impressive amount of statistical data woven into the text. But it is that text that makes the book – a detailed history book that reads like a novel. So full of intimate details about design development and the role played by the various designers, you feel that the author must have been there on the scene the entire time. Actually, the book is a result of extensive and intensive interviews with current and former factory personnel. The genesis of the book, as stated by the author “…grew from quotes from both Luc Donckenwolke, chief designer at Lamborghini, S.P.A., and Henrik Fisker, former design director at Aston Martin …stating that their new cars had targeted Porsche’s 911.” This book resulted from efforts to find out “Who does Porsche target?” Though many interesting bits of data are presented, they are well woven into the text . Personal insights/narratives make this book a real ‘page turner’. Take my advice. Don’t start reading this story of the development of 911 design late in the evening – you’ll miss your bedtime. One of the unique insights provided by this book is how the 10 Porsche family members who owned Porsche AG, with malice aforethought, hired Peter Schutz, (a non-car guy), to turn around their car company. I remember having ‘what were they thinking’ moments at the time. “An ‘American’ to run a German company ?”; ‘a non-car guy to run Porsche ?”. In this book, Leffingwell explains the thought processes by which that decision was made, and describes the decisive actions Herr Schutz took to more than fulfill the Family’s expectations in rescuing the ‘threatened’ 911 from extinction. Fascinating ! Randy Leffingwell traces design 18 Bruce Herrington considerations in detail, year by year. Some of the design relationships – how the engine configuration is influenced by the aerodynamics of the body shell – are amazing. But the reader does need to stay alert because when he starts a discussion of an off-shoot configuration (e.g. 911 Speedsters, or Turbos), the chronology re-starts, which can appear to be a redundant discussion. Many specific examples are given on how one design consideration forced another. For instance , do you know why the design for the interior door pulls on the 997 was changed from aluminum to composite? Amazingly, it was not to reduce cost or vehicle weight. Many books have been published dealing with the perfection of Porsches. This book, dealing with how that perfection was designed, is refreshingly different. It provides a stimulating insight into how our 911s came to be what they are. First published in 2005, this book has not received the attention it deserves. One of a handful of books every Porsche enthusiast should own, it is destined to become a classic of Porsche literature. Yep 350. Today was one of those 6 days excluded. Well, kinda. It rained on us in La Jolla. Our Saturday plans were Cars and Coffee in Irvine in the morning for the usual 356 gossip, then head down to Gillespie Field, San Diego for the Porsche 356 Club/Antique Aircraft Association (AAA) gathering. The weather reports said it was going to be ‘cold.’ Cold in SoCal is defined as mid 50’s or lower. The main rains were to come on Friday, not Saturday. We were a go! Cars and Coffee promised nothing unusual. This was April 11th, the day before Easter. We did want to meet with our usual group of close friends to see what each other was doing. We had been anticipating the 356 Club/AAA event that Bob Lee had arranged (Bob is President of the Porsche 356 Club). We knew there would be lots of unique airplanes and our grouping of great 356s. But, what got my attention was the free lunch. I cannot pass on a free meal. Us retirees have to beg and scratch for food anywhere we can in these economic times. My son Frank and I started out at 0530 in the dark for our Saturday adventure. Top up or top down? Top down! Frank is an eternal optimist. It ain’t gonna rain. The crowd at Cars and Coffee was unusually small, about 300 unique cars. There were about 10 356s! We loved it. It was the Saturday before Easter and most guys were home. We waited for Leonard and Maia Schenkel to meet us and we convoyed down to San Diego. Leonard and Maia put the top up on their '59 Convertible D. We went top down. That plan would have worked, but on the way down, we encountered rain at the 5/805 Junction in La Jolla. It rained hard enough to obscure our vision. We did not use the windshield wipers because a) I have never turned them on in 27 years and did not know if they would work, b) if turned on, I stood a good chance of scratching my windshield; kaaching! $750. We took another approach to rain removal, drive faster. Yep, there was so much wax and coatings on the car that the rain was repelled quickly. Also, as a point of reference, the body is aerodynamic enough to cause the airflow to shed rain with the top down at about 75 MPH. We didn’t get wet! It rain for about 5 – 10 miles. That’s a big SoCal rain. Once we got to the airfield, we were surprised at the number of new hangers. Some folks had built new hangers that doubled as hangers and residences. Above the hangers were full sized living quarters. What a life. One guy told me that he had one of these hangers because his wife didn’t want him hanging around the house in his retirement. He had to leave in the morning and come home for dinner. What a life. The 356 Club had nine 356s attend. Three of us came from the greater Los Angeles area, the rest were from San Diego. Denny Zamler won the long distance award, he came from Vero Beach Florida. Denny did not drive his '60 Roadster though. Dick Smith, the world traveler showed up in his 993 that he had driven from Seattle. Leonard and Maia would have taken the long distance 356 drive award if they gave one. I did mention food! We were served a wonderful lunch. The organizers, Tom Woods from the AAA and Bob Lee of the 356 Club, promised that we would do this again next year. I can’t wait. On the way home, guess what? Rain! At that moment, I was thinking — wouldn’t it be great if I had a Porsche Schwimmwa- 26 June 09 Commercial Advertising Rates Size Quarter billing Annual billing Business card35.00/mo30.00/mo Quarter page 75.00/mo 70.00/mo Half page 125.00/mo 115.00/mo Full page 175.00/mo 160.00/mo Full page - key position 225.00/mo 200.00/mo 4-Color — add 25% For information on placing a commercial advertising, please contact Skip Carter at 619.992.9927 or [email protected] Classified Ads Classified ads are free to PCA members.
