From the Parish Priest
It has been announced this week that
Helen Camden will be finishing as principal of
Mary Immaculate School at the end of this term.
Helen will be greatly missed for her dedication to the
school and community over the years that she has
been with us. We wish her well as she moves into
retirement. A new principal will be appointed to
commence at the beginning of Term Three, and
Brisbane Catholic Education has begun the advertising
process for the position.
On a related matter, the Archbishop has recently
appointed Father Andrew Wise as the Parish Priest of
Annerley Ekibin, to take effect from June 1st this year.
Father Andrew is one of the priests of the Brisbane
Oratory, having recently moved to Annerley from the
Diocese of Sale, where most recently he has been the
Dean of the Cathedral there. I will be taking longservice leave (or a form thereof!) which is customary in
our Archdiocese after fifteen years of service (I am
fifteen years ordained this year). Following my long
service leave and my annual leave, in mid-October I
will return to full-time work in the Regional Tribunal.
Whilst that will be my “day job” I will still be here in the
parish, working with the other Fathers of the Oratory in
the pastoral and sacramental care of parishioners. We
welcome Father Andrew as our new Parish Priest, and
offer him the support of our prayers as he takes up this
office.
We also keep in our prayers the children who are
currently preparing for their Confirmation and First
Holy Communion, and their families, at this special
time. These celebrations will take place in May.
Parents of children who will be ready for the
sacraments of Penance, Confirmation and Eucharist in
2016 are asked to note that we will not be
commencing preparation until next year itself; i.e. the
immediate preparation will not begin in the second half
of this year as has been the custom in our parish in
recent years. Parents are reminded to look out for
details in the school and parish newsletters.
Sunday 9am Mass-goers at Mary Immaculate are
asked to note that the Mass next Sunday will be sung
Ordinary Form, and not the Extraordinary Form, as
Father Paul needs to be at Indooroopilly parish that
morning.
Next Sunday, members of our Parish Pastoral
Council will attend the annual pastoral councils
commissioning Mass in Saint Stephen’s Cathedral,
celebrated by Archbishop Coleridge. An invitation is
extended to any parish musicians who would like to
join the “whole of the Archdiocese choir” which will
sing at the Mass to please contact Karen Lopez on
[email protected] with your name, parish
and voice part and the key phrase “Commissioning
Mass.” There will be a rehearsal on Thursday 30th
April from 7:30-9:30pm.
You may have noticed the grounds around
Mary Immaculate church have received some extra
“tender loving care” of late, including a plant out of the
area where the tree came down in last year’s storm. I
thank the parishioners who have given of their time to
make this space look attractive and welcoming.
Thanks, too, to those who regularly attend to the
gardens and yards—we appreciate your time and
efforts.
The Fourth Sunday of Easter is the World Day of
Prayer for Vocations, so let’s remember in our Mass
today in a special way all our seminarians, especially
those at Holy Spirit Seminary, Banyo, and our own
Brisbane Oratory seminarians: Brother Shawn Murphy
and Brother Francis King. Let’s pray, too, for those
whom God is calling to the priesthood or the religious
life, that they will be open to hearing that call and
courageous to respond to it. Brothers Shawn and
Francis will soon be home here at Annerley: Brother
Francis for a short while, and Brother Shawn for
several months.
In one month today (Sunday), the Brisbane
Oratory in Formation will formally commence. The
community is very excited to have reached this point,
which marks the transition from all the preliminary
work that has been done in recent years, and moving
into the phase where our communal life as an Oratory
community (in formation) formally begins. The point of
the “in formation” time is to attempt to live as an
Oratory community as much as we possibly can,
establishing the particular customs of our house,
settling into the community routine of common meals
and prayer times, and establishing patterns of
apostolic work for the benefit of those in the parish and
those beyond. During the “in formation” period we
need to demonstrate that we can actually live the
Oratorian way of life, and be financially viable as an
independent house. We do all this under the guidance
of Father Michael Lang of the London Oratory, who
has been appointed to this task by the Procurator
General of the Confederation of the Oratory of
Saint Philip Neri, Father Mario Aviles. Father Lang will
visit us here at Annerley in 2016. After having
successfully passed at least three years in the “in
formation” phase we hope it will be possible for us to
petition the Holy See to be established as a
Congregation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri.
Three events are planned to mark the beginning of the
Oratory: our Vallicella Dinner to raise money to fund
our seminarians (Saturday 23rd May); Mass in Mary
Immaculate Church on the Feast of Saint Philip Neri
with Archbishop Coleridge (Tuesday 26th May); and
Solemn High Mass, picnic lunch, and Vespers and
Benediction (Sunday 14th June). See the Oratory
website for more information. Our Lady Help of
Christians, Saint Philip, Blessed John Henry, and
Blessed Pier Giorgio, pray for us!

Fourth Sunday of Easter - Year B
25th/26th April, 2015
LITURGY
Gloria
1st Reading: Acts 4/8-12
Responsorial Psalm 117
(Said by all)
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good,
for his love has no end.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in men:
it is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in princes.
I will thank you for you have given answer
and you are my saviour.
The stone which the builders rejected
has become the corner stone.
This is the work of the Lord,
a marvel in our eyes.
Blessed in the name of the Lord
is he who comes.
We bless you from the house of the Lord;
I will thank you for you have given answer
and you are my saviour.
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good;
for his love has no end.
