March Retreads Monthly Meeting Review
We drove up to the Golden Corral, probably 725AM, they do not open until 730AM so we expected our usual, 1 or 2 bikes and 3 or
4 cars. Imagine our surprise when we saw the entire parking lot full of bikes! Apparently the rumor flew that the Golden Corral
opens at 7, no, not even in the heat of summer, 730AM is the earliest. It sure was fun to round that corner. Thanks for making the
beginning of our day TERRIFIC.
We had visitors, Pat and Tabatha Heater. They ride a Kawasaki. Thanks to Darryl and Lek for bringing our 2 newest members.
Also Glenn and Nancy Yauney’s daughter Dawn was visiting and joined us for breakfast. Welcome to Pat, Tabatha and Dawn.
Candy Harsh was the 50/50 sales person. Lee Aitken won the job for the May 7th monthly meeting. Lee will be “running for the
Wall”. Rebecca Hartman volunteered to sell 50/50 tickets.
Don’t forget to check out our members “For Sale” area in the newsletter. Support your fellow club members whenever you can.
We have a single advertiser, C & R Cycles. Make sure they know you saw their ad in our newsletter.
Sunshine ladies had no reports—so we presume we are all well and riding!
Roger, our safety representative talked about “looking” before merging onto any roadway (street, highway, etc.) and lane changes.
Many others chimed in with more reminders “Alligators on the road”; especially with the heat there are more on the road; Don’t
follow too close to vehicles, lug nuts can become projectiles, you miss items that a vehicle may straddle but you, the bike rider can
miss and may cause damage to your bike. We also discussed personal safety. We are seeing more “animals” out since the weather
is getting warmer. If the animal is not in your way, leave them alone, if they are curled up in your tree they will probably be gone in
the morning, animals that normally only make an appearance at night but are out during the day, take this as a signal that there
maybe a problem. A story about a teacher seeing a bat in the back of a students truck and their desire to “help” ended up with the
bat ((not dead, just resting in daytime (possibly rabid)) biting the teacher as he picked up the bat to dispose of the carcass. This
choice now means the teacher is getting “shots for rabies”.
Our newsletter editor Mary-Ellen is always on the hunt for a new story or article. Submissions are needed before the first of the
month; Mary-Ellen would like to have the newsletter ready and in the “In basket” by the first of each month. Let’s keep her up to
date and loaded with articles.
4 corners news--Dwight and Carolyn are working with Fred and Leona Bennett to set up chapter of the Retreads in Lake Havasu
City, Arizona. We welcome Fred and Leona, plus we have another overnight destination that gives us an excuse to ride (do we
need excuses??)
We have 7 rooms booked for the Springerville weekend trip…still availability if you want to join us on the spur of the moment.
“New Business”
We are looking to promote our club to individuals and local businesses. We are looking for an individual or group of individuals
who would like to promote the club. This means having our newsletter copy available, business cards, flyers (with pull tabs that are
printed with our website), car shows, etc. Anyone interested please call (520-790-1613) or e-mail ([email protected])
Jeff and Cecilia.
Judy Aitken spoke about the “run to the wall”. There are 3 routes that run from the west coast to the east coast to the Vietnam
War Memorial in Washington DC. Lee and Judy, Andy and Meredith, Jerry and Marilyn are planning attending. Judy said we could
all come out to show our support when the southern contingent (~ 400 bikes) will be refueling at the Chevron station in Marana.
The bikes will be at the station at 920 sharp. The Patriot guard will be ahead of the group. Any pedestrian walkway along I-10 can
be used to display signs of support or just watch as the group makes it way down I-10. Lee or Judy to answer any questions, don’t
hesitate to call or e-mail your questions. E-mail [email protected], [email protected], or 520-293-2932.
We will have a meeting at the Golden Corral on our normal meeting day (2nd Sunday of the month), May 10 (Mother’s Day) but we
will begin with our meeting first, 7AM. Then at 7:30 the public will be allowed to sit in the room we normally reserve. This is a one
-time change. Golden Corral allows us in at 7AM however only coffee and hot tea will be available.
Our next 6-month installment for rides (July thru December) scheduling was changed. Instead of a
meeting we brought the calendar to the meeting. We circulated the copies to the group; anyone
who wanted to sign up to lead a ride was encouraged to do so. We did not have any duplicates however we have very few rides scheduled. We will send out the schedule, probably with many “TBD”
slots. We need to keep in mind we have our annual trip to Silver City and Christmas Party to
“schedule”.
Cecilia Murch, Tucson Rep.
What a great weekend (April 18-19) for an overnight ride to the Coronado Trail.
We met at Oracle & Magee and headed north on Highway 77 toward Globe.
Our group included Dan & Aina Dickerson, Lee & Judy Aiken, Nancy & John Hlady, Jeff & Cecilia
Murch, Rich Herin, Glenn & Nancy Yauney and two friends of Lee & Judy, Meredith Hentschell and
Andy Gerrie.
Globe was our fuel stop for the day after which we traveled northeast toward Show Low. On the way,
we crossed the mighty Salt River Canyon, which provided some spectacular scenery. We stopped for a
few minutes at a view point to take it all in.
On to Show Low for a nice lunch at Licano's Mexican Restaurant. It was a very busy place, but large
and we were seated and served in good time.
Meredith & Andy left us in Show Low, for their property there.
Then it was on to Pinetop & Lakeside, through the forest to The Best Western Motel in Eagar. A cold
wind picked up about halfway to Eagar. It made riding a bit on the cold side for a short while.
After checking in, we gathered in the motel's breakfast room for some good reminiscing of our day
and other important ideas. Later that evening, most of us went to a restaurant next door for dinner.
Dan & Aina did not continue on with us and returned back home at Eagar.
On Sunday morning, we left for riding one of the greatest twisty roads in the country, the Coronado
Trail. The Trail is part of Hwy 191 from Eagar to the huge Freeport-McMoRan copper mine at
Morenci, approximately 120 miles through the rugged White Mountains.
After a fuel stop in Morenci, we continued on Highway 191 southwest to lunch in Safford.
Our last leg of the trip was quite windy and onto I-10 to fight headwinds on our way home. A bit over
500 miles in the two days, but everyone seemed to have a good time.
The pictures are the viewpoint on the Salt River, our group at a rest area on the Coronado Trail and
the copper mine at Morenci.
Great weekend to the White Mountains sent in by Nancy and Glenn. Thanks for sharing your trip.
Ride Reports
Friday, April 24 With the threat of rain in the air, 9 brave Retreads made their way to Florence and Mount Athos Restaurant. Sue & Judd Starr, Dwight & Carolyn Irwin, Charlie Broder, Ellen Davidson, Craig Johnstone and
Dan & Aina Dickerson were joined en route by Jeff & Cecilia Murch. Aina led at a steady pace on her newly converted Goldwing trike - thoroughly enjoying the luxury of cruise control! We escaped the rain - it was a georgous day. Since we got there after the main lunch crowd, we had really good service. Cecilia gave us all a visual
treat by ordering "Flaming" Cheese - O-Pah!! We had a nice visit and all headed home except Cecilia & Jeff,
who were on their way to Lakeside.
Submitted by Aina
Saturday, Feb. 21 Mary-Ellen said it is never too late to turn in a report, so... Twenty-three bikes and one truck
followed Aina out of the meet place and headed north to La Casita in Mammoth. Dan was supposed to lead but
he wanted to see the car show in the Marketplace in Oro Valley, so he jumped in front of us in Catalina. The
weather was typical/"Bee-U-ti-ful" and the ride was good. Rich Gilbert & Rebecca brought 3 guests: Reggie,
Jeff & Richard. Also included in the mob were Dennis & Arlyce, Dennie, Rich Herin, Dave & Iris, Jim & Nancy,
John & Nancy, Bear, Judd & Sue & Sue's cousin, Jim, Jeff & Cecilia, Darrel & Lek, Jim & Doreen, Tom, Earl & Liz,
Ron & Candy, Mary-Ellen & Billy and Mark & JoAnne. We had nearly the entire back room to ourselves and the
waitresses were great! After we ate, Bear wished us all goodbye for a while as he is hitting the oil field trucking
road again. Everyone made their own way home, some heading north and some back the way we came.

Thank you, Aina for the ride reports also all reports anytime are greatly appreciated.
Hi MaryEllen,
Greetings from Colorado! I am one of the many hosts for the Colorado Retreads rally coming this July to Montrose. I
received a copy of your April newsletter and you do an awesome job. It's beautiful. Thank you for including me in your
distribution. We are so envious of your riding season. In Denver it's limited. like today where we received 8 inches of
snow with more to come this weekend. So reading about your rides and planned rides, makes us jealous. I will look
forward to further distributions. And if it is easier you are most welcome to send it to me via email. My email address
is provided below. Or even an email reminder to view it on your website. Any method is greatly appreciated. I will
then forward it to the all the rest of the Colorado retreads members.
Then if you don't mind, thought I would use this opportunity to send you the above attachment of our daily event
schedule for the Montrose rally this July. I was wondering if it would be possible to include it in your May/June newsletter so that those interested in coming, can start to plan their trip to Colorado this summer. We Colorado Retreads
would appreciate it.
Then so your chapter members are aware, we added a wine tasting tour to our itinerary that was not previously on the
registration form; plus we have an update from one of the area hotels in Montrose. So if you have a way to share the
below information with your regional members as well, we would appreciated that also.
The Days Inn Montrose, one of our alternative hotels, will only offer our discounted rate of $82.99 until June 26th,
2015. Please be conscious of this date if you intend to acquire a room at this hotel rather than the host hotel which is
the Holiday Inn Express Montrose.
The wine tasting tour is Tuesday, July 28th. Times for the tour are 11a- 4p. Preliminary cost is $21 p/p and includes
transportation, wine samples, a full glass of wine w/a light lunch. This event is limited to only 40 people so availability
will be on a first come/first serve basis. Members/Guests of the rally need to sign up in the hospitality room at the host
hotel on either Sunday, July 26th or Monday 27th.
If you have any other questions or need clarification, please don't hesitate to call or email. You are also welcome to
note my phone number or email for questions.
W e look forward to hearing more from the Tucson Retreads and thank you for helping advertise the Colorado Retreads Rally!

Joan Stearns

SAFETY CONCERNS
Roger Deevers, Safety Officer
Have you seen someone riding dangerously through traffic and thought that, that individual must not have taken the
motorcycle rider’s safety course? If the rider did take the course, the lessons presented are being ignored or dispensed
with. What grabs attention is weaving through traffic at a high rate of speed, following vehicles closely and performing
tricks like doing “wheelies.” If that individual, you think, arrives at his destination he is fortunate indeed.
Maintain a safe speed consistent with driving conditions and your capabilities. Gravel on the road and slippery road
surfaces can be hazardous. Avoid sudden braking or turning.
When riding in the rain, riders find they get better traction by driving in the tracks of vehicles in front of them. But avoid
following too closely, and riding on painted lines and metal surfaces such as manhole covers because they offer less
traction. If caught in a sudden shower while riding, pull off the highway under some shelter (e.g., overpass) and wait for
the rain to stop. If you must ride in the rain, remember that conditions are most dangerous during the first few minutes
of rainfall because of oil and other automobile droppings on the roadway. If possible, sit out the beginning of a rain
shower.
Don't tailgate, and don't let other drivers tailgate you. Following too closely behind another vehicle may make it difficult
for you to brake suddenly. Further, you won't have time to avoid road hazards and traffic situations ahead. If another
vehicle is following too closely, wave it off with a hand signal or tap your brake pedal. If they continue to follow too
closely, change lanes or pull off the road, and let them pass.
Pass only when it is safe to do so. Do not pass or ride on the shoulder. Pull over to the left third of the lane before passing and make sure that you are at a safe following distance. Use turn signals, and avoid crowding the other vehicle as
you pass. Remember to make a head check before changing lanes and when merging.
Use brakes wisely. Use both brakes together. Brake firmly and progressively and bring the motorcycle upright before
stopping. Remember that driving through water can adversely affect the brakes. After passing through water, look for
following traffic, and when safe to do so check your brakes by applying light pressure.
Dogs can be a problem for riders. Don't become distracted and don't kick at a dog. As you approach a dog, downshift,
when you reach the dog, accelerate quickly away.
I am sure that if the mothers of various nations could
meet, there would be no more wars.

How I became a Retreads Motorcycle Club Member
Here is my Bio, the long and short of it.
The Bio of D. W. Gary.
I was born in Chicago, the second oldest of nine. We lived a few years
with other families. Then lived for sixteen years in a three room apartment,
third floor in the rear. There were ten of us counting mom and dad living there
before my dad moved us to a two flat house. We lived on the bottom floor with
three bedrooms. There my baby sister moved in and my older sister had married
and moved out. One of my father's dream was that all his children finish high
school. We all did with some college credits there after to date. I enlisted in
the Air Force because of no job for several months after finishing high school.
That four years lasted for twenty-one years. During that time I had an eleven
year marriage and a daughter. Who now has been married over twenty-four years
with my sixteen old grandson and husband in California.
I trained in three different MOSs. They were in the radar or computer maintenance fields, Air Force choices. I did retire in 1976 (E-7) Master Sergeant.
As a civilian , I worked with Gates Learjet for six year before their big layoffs. I attended Pima classes almost two years before I was called to the Post
Office for a clerk\carrier position which lasted four months. I did return back
to the P.O.as a mail-Handler, mainly loading/unloading mail trucks on the midnight shift plus other jobs that moved
the mail between check positions. After
thirteen years I retired from the Post
Office. Now I did have motorcycles in my
life. A 1971 Honda 175cc, note small
size, easy to store when TDY during my
military time. Next came my 1977 Honda
400cc; my 1981 Honda Gold Wing 1100cc; my
1990 Honda Gold Wing 1500cc and my 2005
Honda Gold Wing 1800cc converted to a
Trike in October 2014. I join GWRRA in
1981 and much later after seeing the Retreads during many of times as I rode
along and other groups I ask where do
they meet. After a couple meetings, I
joined. I am happy to be aboard with
such a happy and friendly riding group.
Hugs,
D. W. Gary

RETREADS
Dear Retreads,
Well, as you can see we DID IT! We bought a brand new
2014 Spyder on our way home from Tucson. The dealer
in Texas offered us a deal we could not refuse. Billy rode
the Spyder and I drove the motor home with the trailer
and Harley the rest of the way home. Except for a 1 day
layover in Louisiana due to rain we had a safe and fun
ride home.
Reading the Spyder manual is the next (after this news
letter) thing on my to do list. Also, I guess I get to wash
and polish it too. The color is black currant and, depending on the sunlight, it shows a red flecks or it looks like a
reddish brown color.

All girls like guys who are tough. Obviously, riding a motorcycle—I don’t
want to say there’s a bad boy quality—but there’s definitely a tough
and macho thing about a guy who
rides a motorcycle and that element
of danger. That’s really sexy.

The Vroom answer is 1912 BS “Old Miracle” Norton
In 1911, Norton’s 40-cc side-valve engine was used in this famous
machine. “Old Miracle” could lap the Brooklands track at 70mph
and set 112 national speed records between 1912 and 1920. It was
the prototype for Norton’s Brooklands Special.
Norton’s impressive reputation was founded on its considerable
success on the race track. Norton’s earliest motorcycles were
equipped with proprietary engines: a Norton with a V-twin Peugeot
engine won the twin-cylinder class at the first TT in 1907, The first
engine to carry Norton’s own name, a single –cylinder design, was
produced in 1908. The company went on to develop a wide variety
of singles-from racers to touring bikes to simple workhorse machines. Then in 1948, Norton built its first parallel twin.
