While all of the services offered at the Cancer Wellness Center are geared toward
those impacted by cancer, the following services were developed specifically for
individuals who are newly diagnosed and/or in active treatment, or who are not more than
two years post treatment. These periods of time within the cancer trajectory have unique
needs which we believe are best addressed through targeted programming.

Counseling

Newly-Diagnosed
Intervention
This four-session structured intervention,
intended for individuals who are about
to or have recently started treatment, will
provide useful tips and tools for adjusting
to a new cancer diagnosis. Participants
meet 1:1 with a counselor.
Mindfulness-based
Intervention
This six-session structured intervention
teaches individuals how to cope with the
emotional impact of initial diagnosis,
recurrent disease, surgery and treatment
through mindful techniques. Participants
meet 1:1 with a counselor.
Couples + Cancer:
Navigating Your Relationship
During Cancer Treatment
This two-session consultation is intended
to address the changes that commonly
occur in a relationship during cancer
treatment. Couples meet privately with a
counselor.
Caregiver Intervention
This two-session structured intervention
is for primary caregivers of an individual
who is newly diagnosed and/or in
treatment for cancer. Caregivers will
learn what to expect during the cancer
trajectory for themselves as caregivers
and also for the individual with cancer.
Tips and techniques will be provided
for navigating the healthcare system,
managing stress and coping with changes
at home. Participants will meet 1:1 with
a counselor.
Within 2 Years Post
Treatment
From Cancer to Health™
From Cancer to Health is a skill-based
class specifically designed for people who
are newly diagnosed or who recently
started treatment. The program provides
participants with strategies for managing
the stress related to a cancer diagnosis.
Skills learned include progressive muscle
relaxation, problem solving, and assertive
communication, along with strategies
for implementing healthy nutrition and
physical activity habits. Participants have
been found to have lower stress, higher
social support, improved communication
with their healthcare team, and fewer
side effects from treatment. The program
is open to men and women with a stage I,
II or III cancer diagnosis. Start dates are
available monthly. For more information,

Treatment’s Done… Now What?
Tuesday, April 14, 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
Finishing treatment is a much-anticipated event
that is normally accompanied by a period of
adjustments – whether they are physical, mental
or emotional. Join us as we discuss the common
concerns that arise when treatment has ended, and
strategies for coping with the transition to being
post-treatment. Open to both survivors and their
loved ones.

practices to prevent flair up.

Knitting can be a relaxing hobby
that reduces stress and keeps one
centered in the present moment. The
CWC knitting group provides a safe
environment to connect with others
who are experiencing cancer in their
lives. No experience necessary—a
knitting teacher is present at every
class. Yarn donations welcomed.

Have you ever wondered why people
who knit are calm? It turns out that the
repetitive actions needed for knitting
can bring on the “relaxation response” in
the body which is quite similar to what
people experience with techniques such
as repetitive prayer, yoga, meditation,
Tai Chi, and other meditative
disciplines. Knitting trains the mind
to be focused on the present moment.

breaths that raise and lower

breathe with normal intensity.

normal intensity and repeat
