PLENARIES
Time travellers: teaching primary history with objects
Richard will explain the thinking behind the British Museum’s latest resources project: Teaching History
with 100 Objects. His session will demonstrate the potential of objects for motivating and grounding
children’s learning in history
Richard Woff, Head of Project, Teaching History with 100 Objects
Inspiring children to be curious and enthusiastic historians
How can we develop and sustain children’s interest in the past? What are the opportunities and challenges
in the new primary history curriculum? In the afternoon plenary, Penelope will share learning and teaching
approaches from her research and work with children.
Professor Penelope Harnett, University of the West of England, Bristol
WORKSHOPS
Workshop A: Leaping beyond 1066 – developing children’s chronological understanding
This session focuses on the Key Stage 2 study of an aspect or theme extending beyond 1066, but locates
it firmly within the wider development of chronological understanding. If you attend Ian’s workshop you’ll
probably find yourself in a timeline, wearing a tabard and maybe a hat, puzzling over pictorial sources and
telling a story across the centuries, but you’ll have to be there to find out which story.
Ian Dawson, former Director of SHP and creator of Thinkinghistory.co.uk
Workshop B: It’s not just digging! Introducing archaeology into primary history
Are you looking for ways to fascinate children with Britain’s history before 1066? If so, this workshop is for
you. Bev’s workshop introduces archaeology as a way of enriching your lessons, engaging children’s
interest and developing their knowledge. This workshop will introduce ways of incorporating archaeology
into your teaching, including simulated digs and small-scale excavations.
Bev Forrest, Associate Principal Lecturer (Primary Education), Leeds Trinity University, member of
the HA primary committee and editorial board for primary history
Workshop C: The journey from Roman Britain to Anglo-Saxon England
This gallery-based session will offer practical advice to support your teaching about the Anglo Saxons at
Key Stage 2. Using objects on display in the Europe AD 300-1100 and Roman Britain galleries, Katharine
will focus on the changes which occurred in Britain as the Romans left and the Anglo-Saxons arrived. Or is
it that simple? Come and find out.
Katharine Hoare, British Museum Educator
Workshop D: Modern mummies
Ancient Egypt continues to be a popular choice in Key Stage 2 History. This workshop will focus on ways
to approach the study of Egyptian life and death in the classroom. Find out how the latest CAT technology
is being used to reveal more about Egyptian mummies in the British Museum collection, and how this might
impact on your teaching. The session includes time in the Egyptian Mummies exhibition and the
opportunity to hear how the museum has been working with children in the exhibition to support classroom
learning.
Rosie Fuller, British Museum Educator
Workshop E: Starting with the Stone Age
Are you looking for inspiration for teaching about changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age?
This workshop will share teaching strategies that engage children with the lives of prehistoric people. In
particular, it will focus on changing technology and life and death. Cat’s workshop will demonstrate how to
make the most of English Heritage resources for teaching about Prehistoric Britain, including how to find
prehistoric sites and ‘find spots’ in your own locality. She will also share ideas for linking this history study
with other subjects in the primary curriculum.
Catharine McHarg, Archive Education Manager, English Heritage
