Procedure:
1. Read section 57.2 of the Chapter 57.

terms from one of the Word Banks above. Use each set of terms only once.
4. For each cartoon, answer this question: Does this cartoonist believe the effects of President Reagan’s foreign
policy actions were mostly negative or mostly positive? Explain your answer. One word will not suffice.
5. Identify any artistic devices the cartoonist used to communicate his or her message (symbols, exaggerated
details, labels, speech/thought bubbles, captions, historical figures, etc.)
6. Repeat for Sections 57.3, 4, and 5

Critical Thinking Questions:
1. Were the effects of President Reagan’s foreign policy actions mostly positive or mostly negative?
2. Were any of America’s founding ideals advanced by Reagan’s foreign policy actions? Were any of America’s
founding ideals hindered by them?
3. Did the ends justify the means? In other words, the United States was ultimately able to contain the spread of
communism. Were the actions taken to do that justified? Why or why not?
Political Cartoon Homework Assignment
In this chapter, you learned about the many actions President Reagan took to contain communism and end the Cold
War. These actions affected the U.S. economy, the country’s standing in the world community, the safety of the nation’s
and the world’s citizens, and American ideals.
Task:
Create a political cartoon commenting on whether you believe the effects of Reagan’s foreign policies were mostly
positive or mostly negative. Your cartoon must use at least three of these artistic devices:
• notable people of this era
• symbols
• exaggerated details
• labels that identify parts of the cartoon
• speech and thought bubbles
• a caption
Do’s and Don’ts:
 Do be creative! Think outside the box, dig deep!
 Do use color! Be interesting! Would someone reading a magazine or newspaper stop to look at your cartoon?
 Don’t use more than an 8X11, standard, white piece of paper.
 Don’t plagiarize or copy one of the cartoons that was given in today’s lesson or on the internet
 Do turn it in on time. 
This homework assignment is worth 15 Project Points (remember projects make up 30% of your grade!) and is due on
Monday the 23rd.
