SYNOPSIS:
This course is designed to provide the NSBDE
required training for dentists and hygienists.
Infection control guidelines as developed by the
CDC will be addressed. Participants will review
the scientific evidence about dental infection
control issues and current CDC recommendations
for minimizing the potential for disease transmission in the dental setting.

Edward Herschaft, DDS
Dr. Herschaft received a DDS from West Virginia University School of Dentistry, a
certificate in oral and maxillofacial pathology from the Medical University of South
Carolina (MUSC). He is Professor Emeritus - MUSC College of Dental Medicine,
Professor of Biomedical Sciences - University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) School of
Dental Medicine, and Guest Professor - Medical School of Nankai University in
Tianjin, China. Dr. Herschaft is one of the quality assurance officers for the UNLV
School of Dental Medicine. He is a Diplomate of the American Boards of Oral Medicine and Forensic
Odontology and Fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists, AAFS and Pierre
Fauchard Academy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this course, participants should be able to:
 Describe universal and standard precautions
 Identify and describe disease transmission and infectious
hazards in the dental setting
 Discuss occupational exposures and prevention, postexposure management and prophylaxis to bloodborne
pathogens
 Establish objectives, goals, and management of an infection
control program in the dental setting
