THE CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF STUDENT LEADERS SAN JOSE DOUBLETREE HOTEL HIGH SCHOOL CONFERENCE | MARCH 28-30, 2015 HS Program.Sandi.indd 1 3/16/15 6:06 PM WELCOME TO THE CASLab A HYPOTHESIS FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings fellow innovators! Since the dawn of time, history has been guided by mankind’s vision for a better tomorrow. We look around and ask the tough questions while tirelessly working to discover their answers. But innovation is not an overnight thing, and it relies on the passion and dedication of young leaders to ensure that dreams become realities. The focus of this year’s CASL State Conference equips student leaders with the skills and resources needed to take any activity, event, or idea from good to great. On behalf of the 20142015 CASL State Board, we hope the next three days of keynote speakers, professional-level workshops, and networking will provide ample opportunities to think differently and spark the innovation within all of us. Welcome to the CASLab: it’s time to test a new solution. --Nathan Glovinsky, President A HYPOTHESIS FROM OUR HEAD SCIENTIST As Steven Johnson said, ‘If you look at history, innovation doesn’t come just from giving people incentives; it comes from creating environments where their ideas can connect.” It is my hope the CASLab is that environment for you! Moreover, you leave the conference with the commitment to remain curious, go back to your campus and community and notice what has been done and what remains to be done. Dream big, and sincerely begin to practice testing new solutions, which allow more people opportunities to become connected. Your schools are lucky to have you, as we know the campus would look very different without you, the student leaders. I applaud and thank each one of you for all that you do. Let’s now take it from good to great and keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we can feel the excitement of possibilities and create a better world, together. --Sandra Kurland HS Program.Sandi.indd 2 3/16/15 6:06 PM LABORATORY BLUEPRINTS HS Program.Sandi.indd 3 3/16/15 6:06 PM CONFERENCE AGENDA CONFERENCE AGENDA HIGH SCHOOL DAY 1 [SATURDAY, MARCH 28th] 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Registration (bayshore ballroom) Advisor Networking (presidential suite) 1:15 PM - 2:00 PM Lab Meeting 1 (refer to lab key) 2:15 PM - 3:30 PM General Session featuring Omékongo Dibinga (gateway ballroom) 3:35 PM - 4:05 PM Advisor Meeting (gateway ballroom) 3:45 PM - 4:15 PM Workshop 1 (as ticketed) 4:10 PM - 4:55 PM Advisor Networking (presidential suite) 4:25 PM - 4:55 PM Workshop 2 (as ticketed) 4:30 PM - 5:00 PM Advisor Room Key Distributions (hotel lobby and presidential suite) 5:00 PM - 5:30 PM School Meeting (advisor’s choice) 5:45 PM - 6:15 PM Key Distributions (advisor’s choice) 6:15 PM - 7:00 PM Dinner (bayshore ballroom and sprigs) 8:00 PM - 8:45 PM Intrastates (refer to lab key) 9:00 PM - 10:30 PM Dance (gateway ballroom/bayshore foyer) 10:35 PM - 10:45 PM School Meeting (advisor’s choice) 11:00 PM Lights Out! We as leaders are more than just our names and our positions; we are our stories, our passions, our tribulations, and our successes. Together let’s tell your story and let’s fill in the blank. #IAm______ MEETING MADHOUSE SAM CARLENZOLI [Northern Director] Are your ASB’s meetings draining? Too long? Boring? If so, stop by this workshop to learn how to plan and execute a successful meeting. Be it small or large groups, or informal and formal meetings, the skills from this workshop will help take any meeting from good to great. LEADERSHIP ABC’S (BACK TO THE BASICS) GABRIELLE DELLA RIPA [Southern Director] We student leaders live incredibly busy lives; so busy we can sometimes forget the simplest of leadership values. Come join me in a throwback to our nap-time and coloring book days in a review of the three key leadership lessons we learned in kindergarten. Don’t forget your crayons! GOING BEYOND THE SURFACE MARVIN FLORES [’13 Southern Director] Although you may not know someone at first glance or first impression, there’s always a back story to everybody. Come and learn how to learn one’s story and work on not assuming how someone is! THE PRESIDENT’S PARTY NATHAN GLOVINSKY [President] Serving as ASB President can be one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences in our leadership careers. At “The President’s Party”, we’ll meet the other ASB Presidents in California and learn how our actions not only represent ourselves, but our entire ASB and school. We’ll also have the opportunity to make new connections, share our presidential pet peeves, and learn ways to lead our student governments with integrity and enthusiasm. THE DREAM TEAM NEIL GUPTA [Northern Director] Once we come up with a new idea on our campus, it can often be difficult to implement it without a great team. Come and learn about how working in a team can help us attain our goals, through a series of fun activities and discussions! HS Program.Sandi.indd 7 3/16/15 6:06 PM WORKSHOPS FUNSIZED FLYERS KIMI KANESHINA [Web and Media Director] Advertising is crucial when planning an event. Learn the tips and tricks for creating an effective flyer! MIND POWER (LEARNING FROM YOUR EXPERIENCES) EMILY LANGLOIS [Northern Director] Bring out your cape and get ready to unleash your greatest superpower: your mind! Come explore the possibilities of how embracing knowledge can help you soar in your ASB. WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER EMILY LOMASNEY [Southern Director] A positive school culture is a characteristic we all want our school to possess. Come and learn ways we can include our entire campus to reach our goal, because as you know we’re all in this together! HUMBLE HEROES JAVIER LOPEZ [Southern Director] Many times the best leaders are those who go unknown. Come learn how to shift the spotlight on your campus to increase student recognition! CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE SYDNEY MAGUIRE [Northern Director] Leadership is more than dances and rallies. Come learn how to advocate for your student body and become an effective leader on your campus and in your community! TRIUMPH TAKES PERSEVERANCE MELODY MENDEZ [Southern Director] After experiencing “failure,” we find it easier to give up than to try again. Join me as we discover the backbone of ASB, and success, perseverance! HS Program.Sandi.indd 8 3/16/15 6:06 PM WORKSHOPS THE BELIEF BRACKET: MAKE YOUR PICK CARLYN MORONES [‘14 Southern Director] What do you value most in your life? In this workshop, discover what really means the most to you and create fun ways to incorporate those values back on your campus! THE IMPACT OF STUDENT VOICE KENTON SHIMOZAKI [Student Member, State Board of Education] We as leaders have the incredible ability to not only represent our fellow students, but be a voice for change. Student board members play that role in districts across our state. Come learn how you can be an effective student board member and how you can bring student voice to your schools! SUCCESS DOES NOT ALWAYS COME WITH A MEDAL NICOLE NORDSTROM [’12 President Emeritus] Leadership is not defined by one’s position of authority, list of accomplishments, or sense of entitlement. This workshop is dedicated to uncovering power and influence of humble leaders, recognizing their contribution to campus, the community, and on a global scale. ENDING THE STIGMA (SUICIDE AWARENESS AND PREVENTION) ALEX OLAVIDES [Southern Director] JACOB QUIROGA [Web and Media Director] Taking a step in the right direction to bring awareness to teen mental illnesses starts with us successfully breaking down the stigma that is built around suicide and depression. Help each other by understanding these illnesses in order to make a difference in ourselves, on your campus, in your community, and in our world. HOW TO BE HAPPY AMANDA REGALADO [‘14 Southern Director] Happiness is not just an emotion, but a state of well being. How do we achieve happiness? Money? Power? Success? Love? Puppies? Join me as we learn the true secret of how to “happy.” WE’VE GOT SPIRIT ANDREW REGALADO [Southern Director] It’s time to show everyone We’ve Got Spirit! Come and learn how to impact your campus climate to transform your school into a positive place so every student has a happy face! HS Program.Sandi.indd 9 3/16/15 6:06 PM WORKSHOPS CONSCIOUSNESS OF LOVE ARMANDO SANCHEZ [President Elect] Open your mind to new ideas and gain new knowledge. Experience what the power of love can do in your ASB, campus, and community! EXPANDING YOUR VISION (COMMUNITY AND ENGAGEMENT) KATHLEEN SCHWIND [Communications Director] Who does your ASB team serve? Itself? Some students? Most students? The Administration? In this presentation we will Expand Your Vision to reveal how getting involved in the community can strengthen your leadership team, student body, and the school as a whole. Experience firsthand the thrill of collaboration, and the necessity of sharing your new vision. UPGRADE YOU PEACHA SOKK [‘14 Northern Director] Being in ASB, on top of school, and on top of all those extracurriculars is never easy! In this workshop, learn some time management skills and how to juggle all of your priorities and still come out ***Flawless. KEEPING IT CLEAN (SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE) MAXWELL WALSHAW [Northern Freshman Director] We’ve all seen those inappropriate, cringe-worthy Tweets and Instgram posts. They may disappear from your feed in an instant, but today’s college admission boards have the ability to find them later on. In this pertinent and timely workshop, you will learn how to maintain your sense of individuality while keeping your profile professional. LOVE ALWAYS, YOU (MOTIVATION AND EMPOWERMENT) OLIVIA YEE [Northern Director] “Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one else who is you-er than you!” -- Dr. Suess Before we can inspire others, we must first learn how to inspire ourselves. Become the person you want to be when you come to Love Always, You. HS Program.Sandi.indd 10 3/16/15 6:06 PM SPEAKERS OMÉKONGO DIBINGA THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK. WRITE BEFORE YOU FIGHT.
