Elimbah News & Views Monday 25 May 2015 Volume 2, Issue 6 Some Key Questions Parents knowing what children are doing at school is an important part of the child/parent/school partnership. In this busy world it is too easy sometimes to let things fly at a hectic pace without really engaging in the things that matter. I’m sure that we as a school can do a better job in informing you about learning and schooling toowe try- but things get pretty busy here too. The below points are some worthwhile discussion starters when next sitting down with your child to talk about learning and school… Tell me what you are really enjoying learning about or to do at the moment? What are you doing really well with? How do you know this? What do you want to get better at? How will you do this? Who are your friends? Why are they your friends? What’s the best thing about your teacher? How could your teacher be a better teacher? What are your learning goals at the moment? Who helps you when you need help? Instrumental Music Workshop On Wednesday, June 17 2015, students from the Elimbah State School Concert Band will travel to workshop with students from the Pacific Paradise State School Concert Band. This workshop will focus on a concert band format and will give each student the chance to perform as part of a large ensemble. The day will conclude with a concert for the Pacific Paradise State School parade. This workshop is a great learning opportunity for all of the concert band students. It is anticipated that Elimbah State School Concert Band will host the Pacific Paradise State School Concert Band later in the year with another workshop. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Hill our band teacher and to these students for the great work that they do and for sharing their talents with us. I’m always inspired by the way that our band grows throughout the year as new skills are acquired and new members come aboard. Education Week Celebrations We have a big week planned for our Preps to Year 2 students to acknowledge and celebrate Education Week. On Tuesday our Preps will be celebrating “Grandparents’ Day” and on Wednesday our Prep-Year 2 students will be celebrating “Under 8s Day”. There will also be a “National Simultaneous Story Time” scheduled at 11am on Wednesday. Have a great week Tracey Sharpe ELIMBAH STATE SCHOOL Ph: 5432 1333 email: [email protected] INSIDE THIS ISSUE Deputy’s Desk Lines from the Library Focus on Learning P&C News Community Notices Classifieds DATES TO REMEMBER Tues 26 May Grandparents Day - Prep Wed 27 May Under 8’s Day National Simultaneous Storytime Tues 2 Jun Glasshouse District Boys Softball trials Fri 5 June Interschool soccer/netball Mon 8 June Public Holiday Starring On Parade 3D FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK with Chris Godfrey A big thank you to all the Prep parents that attended our Literacy in Prep information session last Wednesday. We had over 40 parents attend and listen to presentations about Oral Language, The Bug Club and Home Reading. Home Readers Home Reading is an important piece in the Learning –to- Read -jigsaw puzzle for a variety of reasons: Home Readers are designed to promote fluency and confidence in reading – in the early years children read simple texts with focus on repetition and building comprehension and de-coding strategies Home Reading increases children’s reading ‘mileage’ and exposure to a variety of texts They allow parents to see how their children progress through the year They are levelled to suit the child’s progress and are regularly reviewed Real Books! Of course, Home Readers in the Early Years are not the most exciting books! Children’s love of reading will really only be nurtured through reading real books and through being read to regularly by their parents. Letting your child make their own choice about what they want to read is the most powerful way to encourage them to be motivated and interested readers. If your child loves dinosaurs, find the section in your local library and borrow as many as you can. Don’t worry about the book being too hard – you can use a strategy to help your child access the text when reading together at home, or you can read it to them. Don’t worry if the book appears too easy – this will provide valuable reading practice for your child and it will be something that they can access independently. Lastly, don’t make your child’s choice wrong – this is about them and their reading, you want them to be excited and wanting to return! Most importantly, make reading together the most fun and enjoyable part of your and your child’s day. Read the books together with funny voices, or take turns to read different characters. Talk about your favourite parts of the books when you are finished with them and which authors you like the most. As cherished Australian author Mem Fox suggests, don’t teach the book – enjoy it! Have a lovely week and we’ll see our prep,Y1 and Y2 parents at Under 8s Day on Wednesday! Have a lovely week Chris THIS WEEKS BUG CLUB WINNER! Congratulations Grayson Lines from the library with Donna Pickering Developing Comprehension Skills Elimbah has a consistent approach of teaching reading and comprehension strategies to our students. While many of our students are accurate and fluent decoders, being able to understand what they have read is the key to enjoying reading and developing a love of reading. Good readers use a number of strategies to help them make meaning. At Elimbah, we call these strategies the 7 Keys to Comprehension. Teachers demonstrate these strategies through modelling and guided practice. While each strategy is taught individually, the goal is to help students develop a ‘toolbox’ of strategies they can draw on to become more active and engaged readers. The 7 Keys to Comprehension are: · · Making connections to prior knowledge Predicting · · · Visualising Questioning Making Inferences · Determining Importance · Summarising and Synthesising Talk with your child and see which one is their current focus. Super Bear This week Super Bear is visiting Year 4/5L after working with Ms Hamilton and her Upper 2 Bands students last week. Super Bear is constantly on the lookout for classes that follow all the Super Bus Rules when visiting the library. He especially likes to see children walking in the library, looking after equipment and being respectful to teachers, adults and other children. Premier’s Reading Challenge The Premier’s Reading Challenge began last week and this year our goal is for every child at Elimbah State School to complete the challenge. Parents can help by encouraging their children to read every day – before school, on the way to school, in the afternoon, as tea is being cooked, in the evening or before bed. For a student to successfully complete the Premier's Reading Challenge they must read or experience the number of books indicated in the table below. Experiencing a book can include home activities such as shared reading, listening and reading along with a book, or being read to. Completed forms can be returned to the library or your child’s class teacher. Additional forms are available from the library for those students who would like to read additional books. Students have until the 28 August to complete the challenge. Good luck and keep reading! Year level Number of books Prep - Year 2 Read or experience 20 books Years 3 - 4 20 books Years 5 - 6 15 books NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORY TIME We would like to extend an invitation to all Prep Year 2 parents and carers to participate in our National Simultaneous Story time this Wednesday at 11am. The story, “The Brothers Quibble” will be read by Mr Godfrey after Under 8’s Day in the 4/5 eating area. Hoping to see you there. Focus on Learning What’s happening in 1L? In Year one, we are continuing to use concrete apparatus for number and addition. We work together in pairs and small groups to play games to help consolidate concepts we learn as a whole class. We played shop and investigated different money combinations we could use to buy objects of different prices up to $1. In history, we made beautiful time capsules with memories inside that we can look back on in years to come. We used a timeline to sequence our years so far. We have been using paint, water, modelling clay, magnetic letters and many different sensory ways to learn our spellings. We always have fun learning in 1L. What’s happening in 2O? In 2O we are working on writing better and bigger sentences that will capture and entertain our audience. We have been enhancing our sentences with adjectives and adverbs. Adjectives and adverbs put more detail into our sentences. Children are also beginning to use connectives words in their sentences to engage the audience.
