Shira in Tough Times & Good Times
When we speak about ‫ שירה‬,whether in Chazal or in common speech, we usually think of something joyful and positive. In
fact the Torah itself is referred to as a ‫ שירה‬,because of the positive feelings and emotions that are often generated by
hearing and singing a song. However, this week, with the rocket attacks in the North, we consider another component of
shira: Chazal teach that song generates ‫ מחילה‬,forgiveness, by creating a stronger emotional and spiritual bond between ‫עם‬
‫ ישראל‬and ‫ השם‬.Yesterday after lunch, I recited Tehillim with the Middle School; the song of Tehillim often helps connect
us to Hashem—in good times and challenging times. Our hearts go out to the families of the chayalim killed and those
wounded. We are hopeful that this ‫ שבת שירה‬will help ‫ עם ישראל‬strengthen its bond to the ‫ רבונו של עולם‬so that He will
protect ‫ צה"ל‬and ‫ עם ישראל‬in the north, throughout Israel, Europe and all over the world.
Next weekend, ‫ בע"ה‬,will be one of the busiest of the year for our School: as we get ready for our school dinner (Sunday
night, February 8th) High School Shabbaton and Middle School Melave Malka. Each event requires much preparation on
the part of administrators, teachers and students. We are sure that next weekend will be wonderful, exciting and inspiring!

will be honoring three most worthy honorees: Dr. & Mrs. Abberbock, Mr. and Mrs. Efi Kreitner, and Morah Tamar

You won’t want to miss our 3rd and 4th grade choir, under the able and professional guidance of our music teacher, Mrs.
Esther Bergman. We look forward to seeing you all at the dinner!

High School Shabbaton
The High School, will, ‫ בע"ה‬,be having a fun, bonding experience with numerous inspirational and exciting activities
planned. The Shabbaton will be taking place in Long Beach, NY. Students and faculty have been preparing divrei Torah,
games, and mysterious and exciting activities. We thank all the girls and especially Estie Warshaw, Director of Admissions, and Malka Friedman, Activities Coordinator in the High School for all their hard work.
Middle School Melave Malka
Middle Schoolers have been diligently preparing for their melave malka, which will take place, ‫ בע"ה‬, next Motzei Shabbat
at Shulamith School. The event will include skits, dances, songs, inspirational stories and divrei Torah by myself and the
students. The girls have been working hard on a beautiful décor as well. Many thanks to Gitty Fleisher, Middle School
Principal and Rochel Aberbach for all their hard work in helping the students get ready for the Melave Malka.
Let us hope that, ‫ בע"ה‬,this coming week will be a week of positive shira!

In this week's Parsha, Parshat Beshalach, we learn that H. wants us to keep davening and asking
for our needs to be fulfilled. Our Tefillot are very precious to the Ribono Shel Olam. He loves to
hear them!
From where do we learn this in the Parsha? When Bnei Yisroel left Mitzrayim, Pharoah and his army chased after them. Do you know why? When Bnei Yisroel left Mitzrayim, they stopped davening to H. Therefore, H. allowed this to happen, because H. Wanted to hear their Tefillot. We must
always daven to H.
Tefillah is so important! We must not forget not only to daven for our needs, but also to be mispallel
for others' needs. This enables Ahavat Yisroel!
The Chofetz Chaim zt"l was known to say Tehillim for people that he didn't even know! Rav Finkel
zt"l was once in a dentist's office and overheard someone screaming in pain. The Rav said Tehillim
for that person even though he did not know who he was! Let us learn from these examples so that
we may be zocheh to the Geulah sheleima bimhayra byameinu Amein!

The soldiers were at least 2 km. from the border, heading south from Ghajar village on a road also

We have been learning the importance of friendship and we worked cooperatively in whole
and small groups to accomplish tasks. Fitting into this Friendship theme we read books by Helen
Lester titled Tacky Penguin. These stories are about a penguin that always gets himself in trouble,
but then comes out on top with the help of his friends.
Not only is it winter weather outside, but when you enter our
room you will notice that our classroom reflects the season. Snowmen,
polar bears , and bears sleeping in a cave illustrate this season well.
The children learned about the coldest season by taking a look at
winter clothing, weather characteristics, and winter activities. We had different learning experiences to help us better understand this season.
We are working on our math learning skills and have been counting
snowmen, comparing groups of penguins, sorting mittens by their size and
patterning winter colors. The girls are progressing nicely with their numbers– YAY! We are up to number 12.
Arts and crafts have been a lot of fun. We
have made all sorts of winter projects such as snow
globes, polar bears, and of course on of our favorites
– a snowman dressed in winter clothing. When they
are done decorating our walls they will come home
with your daughter.
At our sensory table we got to paint snow,
play with shaving cream and we even made our own
winter play dough.
This week we started to learn the “‫ב‬-‫ ”א‬. We
learned the first letter “‫ ”א‬and we will learn up to
letter “‫”י‬.
Finally in last week’s ‫ פרשה‬after years of ‫ בני ישראל‬being slaves in ‫ מצרים‬and the ten
plagues that ‘‫ ה‬punished the Egyptians with. ‫ פרעה‬let the Jews leave. But in this weeks ‫פרשה‬,
‫בשלח‬, as soon as the Jews come out of ‫מצרים‬, ‫ פרעה‬changes his mind and began chasing after them.
We continued to learn the rest of the ‫ פרשה‬how ‫ משה‬takes the Jews across the ‫ ים סוף‬and the
miraculous way that the Jews were saved.
Then,
the Jews continue on their way across the desert. While
they were traveling, ‘‫ ה‬took care of all their needs.
