+ aesthetic contemplation: as windows to nature
» How can we creatively use real-time video
as raw material for artistic experiments?
& what if we use it for forest protection?
As researchers and designers exploring arts practices,
we can also play a role for efective change
in people's behavior regarding forests protection

ARTiVIS B-Wind!
What is the feeling of becoming the invisible wind?
Will you cherish the trees, or will you trigger a hurricane?

ARTiVIS Play with Fire
Challenging constraints, “don’t play with fre”
is the motto for this experience, assuming both wild
and innocent sides, rebellion and protectionism

Evaluating
the Intangible
Provocations » Need » Motivation
Need for evaluation was triggered by this kind of feedback in early submissions:
“(...) The project is interesting and the goal is relatively
worthwhile.
However, the alignment between what is being attempted
and what the tangible results might be are entirely
speculative and fundamentally, unpersuasive.”
[FCT evaluation panel comments, June 2010]
ARTiVIS What about evaluation?
Traditional HCI usability evaluation: is the system useful,
easy to learn and use, satisfying?
*Relevant* but not enough:
» Measuring what?
Usability, aesthetic values, long lasting impact?
» How to evaluate the holistic experience?
And what about the environmental awareness?

ARTiVIS Evaluation results & further iterations
Applying HCI practice to Art contexts: successful experience
» Users show emotional response
» Environmental awareness is apparent in results
» Learning is a key factor in environmental awareness
+ Explore further links between Art and HCI
+ Non-verbal data gathering through instrumentation
Conclusions & Perspectives
ARTiVIS Prototyping the intangible
Fake it 'till you make it
» Use paper, video, role-play, wizard of oz
» Always beta: iterate, iterate, iterate
» Involve collaborators as stakeholders
» Have fun
