• Oklahoma City’s #1 ranked flat-track roller derby team.
• Oklahoma City’s premier WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track
Derby Association) member league.
• The youngest league to be accepted into the WFTDA.
• An all-inclusive group of women from all backgrounds
ranging in age from 19 to 45.
• A registered OK Nonprofit group that donates a portion of
the proceeds from each bout and raffle to a local charity.
• A group dedicated to community service, local charities and
and helping the world around them.
Our mission as Victory Dolls is to learn and grow both
personally and within the competitive world of women's flat
track roller derby by remaining solidified with our fellow
teammates, by exhibiting respect in the way we communicate,
and honor in the way we train and compete.
It is our intention to both practice, and hold ourselves to, the
highest standards of sportswomanship. We are strong,
independent women who have banded together to do what is
best for our team, our communities, and ourselves.
Dolls?
The Oklahoma Victory Dolls roller derby league was founded
in November 2007 by a group of skaters who wanted to put
Oklahoma City on the international roller derby map. It has
since attracted approximately 40 women from around the OKC
metro area, including experienced former members of other
US leagues.
OKVD practices and holds bouts year-round in Oklahoma City
and in Norman, and after two successful seasons, are
currently planning to make roller derby even bigger in 2011.
Modern roller derby appeals to people from all walks of life,
from aging fans of the banked track, to 20-something hipsters
who, before roller derby, wouldn’t have been caught dead at a
sporting event.
Our demographics cut a wide swath across gender, race and
age, with the average fan in the middle-to upper middle-class
tax bracket and between 20-45 years old. This exciting sport is
sweeping the nation, with over 300 leagues throughout the US
and more popping up all over the world every day.

AUGUST 13, 1935
LATE 1960S
2001
EARLY 2004
First Transcontinental Roller Derby
is played in Chicago: 25 teams of 2
skaters each skate 3,000 miles
around the track, a distance equal
to that between San Diego and New
York City. The winners would be the
team to cover that distance in the
shortest time. Each team had to
travel a given number of miles in
every 11 1/2 hour daily skating
session. During the entire time
allotted for the race, one of the two
members had to be skating or else
the team risked disqualification. On
Sunday, September 22, 1935
teammates Clarice Martin and
Bernie McKay won the first Roller
Derby. Martin and McKay held the
lead from September 11 on and
were one of only 9 teams out of the
original 25 to finish the month-long event.
The IRDL tries skating against
Roller Games, despite much
animosity between players and staff.
IRDL skaters played hard and real,
while Roller Games skaters were
into the showy aspect and weren't
used to the rough play that the
Seltzer-affiliated skaters dished out.
Bad Girl/Good Woman productions
(BGGW) is created in Austin when
girls working at four different bars,
with the help of a man named
'Derby Dan', decided to put together
an interesting athletic event, and
come up with all-women, flat track
Roller Derby as their sport of choice.
Supposedly, the team themes were
based on the bars' décor, and came
out in each team's DIY uniforms.
This established the flamboyant and
flirtatious nature that is present in
derby today. The founders
disassociated with Derby Dan. They
became the "She-E-Os," took
control and can now say they are
"women owned and operated." They
organized the first event and got the
business off the ground. It was
supposed to be a one night deal,
but it was so popular, they formed
BGGW and started their first season
in 2002.
Women's Flat Track Derby
Association is formalized.
Acting as the "WNBA" or "NFL" of
the all-women flat track Roller Derby
sport, the new governing body
formalized a number of
requirements and bout (or game)
dates in an effort to formally unite
leagues across the nation and to
elevate the image of member
leagues as women who are worldclass athletes and business owners,
focused on the advancement of flat
track Roller Derby. Their mission
statement is: Founded in 2004, the
WFTDA promotes and fosters the
sport of women's flat track derby by
facilitating the development of
athletic ability, sportswomanship,
and goodwill among member
leagues. The governing philosophy
is "by the skaters, for the skaters."
Women skaters are primary owners,
managers, and operators of each
member league and of the
association. Operational tasks
include setting standards for rules,
seasons, and safety, and
determining guidelines for the
national and international athletic
competitions of member leagues.
All member leagues have a voice in
the decision-making process, and
agree to comply with the governing
body's policies.
1937
Increase of physical contact is
suggested to Seltzer by sportswriter
Damon Runyon and the game
evolves into what we know today.
The governing body was named the
International Roller Derby League
(IRDL) and owned by Leo Seltzer.
Roller Games was started parallel to
the IRDL, and had nothing to do
with the Seltzers. This outfit played
up the antics, showmanship and
violence of the sport to almost
ridiculous proportions.
1950
Leo's son, Jerry, takes over for his
father and moves the headquarters
from the east coast to California.
Jerry Seltzer is still active in the
roller derby community to this day
and continually shows support for
the rebirth of the sport.
1973
IRDL holds its last official game.
Transportation costs (during the gas
shortage in the 70s) and low
attendance were blamed for this first
death.
APRIL 1977
International Roller Skating League
(IRSL) is formed with David
Lipschultz at the helm.
DECEMBER 12, 1987
IRSL plays its last game in Madison
Square Garden in New York.
1984
RollerJam created and was an
attempt to make derby like pro
wrestling. Joanie Weston's passing
in 1997 inspired Knoxville television
producer Stephen Land to revive
the game with RollerJam.
New additions included a figure 8
track, inlines instead of quads and
an actual alligator pit. "Its ultimate
failure helped poison TV to any kind
of roller skating," said Lipschultz.
It lasted for 2 years on TNN, which
is now SPIKE TV.
2002
BGGW and TX Rollergirls are
formed: After the first season,
BGGW split due to business
differences and two separate
leagues were formed: Lonestar
Rollergirls (who switched to playing
on a banked track, and still operate
under BGGW), and Texas Rollergirls
(who stayed with the flat-track
format).
2003
Derby takes off—Phoenix then New
York, Los Angeles, Tucson, North
Carolina start training. Flat track
format requires less setup, startup
money, and maintenance so the
popularity spreads quickly.

7 | THE HISTORY OF ROLLER DERBY
ROLLER DERBY WAS CREATED BY LEO SELTZER ON A NAPKIN AT JOHNNY RICKETTS IN CHICAGO, INSPIRED BY AN ARTICLE ON THE POPULARITY OF ROLLER SKATING IN AMERICA.
WHAT IS A LEAD JAMMER?
PENALTIES AND THE BOX
The first Jammer to pass each opposing player in the
pack legally on her initial pass receives Lead
Jammer status. This gives her the right to call off the
jam at any time.
Penalties are based on impact. For example, a block
to the back that causes a skater to stumble would be
a minor penalty. A block to the back that causes the
skater to fall down would be a major penalty.
WHAT HAPPENS IF NO ONE GETS LEAD JAMMER?
If a player accrues four minor penalties or one major
penalty, she must serve one minute in the penalty
box. Both the skater and her position are penalized.
For example, if she were the Jammer, the team
would have no Jammer for one minute. Skaters
reentering the pack from the penalty box must enter
at the back of the pack.
Once the jammer has completed the first initial
pass/lap she is eligible to score points. She can earn
one point for every opposing skater she legally
passes. Blockers try to stop the opposing team's
Jammer while also making holes for their own
Jammer to slip through.
A jam is the period of play, and it can last up to two
minutes in duration. A jam continues until either the
Lead Jammer calls it off or the two minutes expires.
A whistle blows four times when a jam ends.
If both Jammers make unclean passes in their first
attempts through the pack, no Lead Jammer is
declared. The jam will continue for the full two
minutes.
HOW DOES A JAMMER GET POINTS?
A Jammer earns one point for every opposing player
passed legally on each lap made after the initial
lap/pass. A Jammer receives points for opposing
skaters in the penalty box as soon as she legally
passes the first opposing skater as she enters the
back of the pack. A Jammer will not earn points if she
fouls an opposing player or if her skate steps out of
bounds while attempting a pass. A jammer may
receive a maximum of 4 points for each lap and an
additional point if she laps the opposing Jammer. A
grand slam is 5 points in a single lap.
WHAT IS THE ENGAGEMENT ZONE?
The term "pack" refers to the largest group of Pivots
and Blockers, skating in proximity, containing
members from both teams. The Engagement Zone
is 20 feet from the nearest pack member. A skater
must be in the Engagement Zone in order to block or
assist. Engaging and/or being outside of the
Engagement Zone results in Out of Play penalties.
If there is no defined pack skaters cannot assist or
engage other players. There are Out of Play
penalties for destroying the pack as well as failing to
reform the pack once it is destroyed.
Only two Blockers from each team and one Jammer
from either team are allowed in the box at one time.
If there are already two Blockers from a team in the
box when a third is sent, that third Blocker will be
waived back onto the track and must wait to serve
her penalty.
If one Jammer is in the box and the other Jammer
gets sent to the box, the first Jammer is released and
the second Jammer serves the same amount of time
that the first Jammer served.
WHAT IS A LEGAL BLOCK?
Any player may engage an opposing player's
shoulder to upper thigh, chest and upper torso. The
player can initiate contact with her booty, hips, torso,
and arm from her shoulder to above, but not
including, the elbow.

8 | ROLLER DERBY 101
HOW IS ROLLER DERBY PLAYED?
Derby has three distinct positions identifiable by the
skater helmets. The Pivot wears a stripe on her
helmet, she acts as a navigator of sorts controlling
pack speed and usually acting as the last line of
defense for the pack. The Jammer wears a star on
the side of her helmet and is the only skater allowed
to score points during gameplay. The blockers do not
wear helmet covers and act as offense and
defensive players in the pack creating holes for thier
team Jammer and causing blockades for the
opposing team Jammer. To begin the game, one
Pivot, three Blockers, and one Jammer from each
team enter the track. On the first whistle, the pack,
made up of the Pivot and Blockers, starts. When the
last pack member crosses their start line, a whistle
blows twice, and the Jammers take off from their
starting line 20 feet behind. Each Jammer tries to
race through the pack first to attain Lead Jammer
status, as indicated by their Jammer Referee. The
Lead Jammer may end the jam at any time by
putting her hands on her hips.

WFTD A National Championship: November 11-13, 2011 in Denver, Colorado.
Somewhat. Roller Derby was invented by Leo Seltzer in
Chicago in 1932, and went through various incarnations,
starting out as a race and later adding more athleticism
and physical contact. The evolution of the sport most
famously resulted in the campy, wrestling-type version of
the Roller Games of the 1970s and 80s where most of the
outcomes were fixed and the track was sloped or
“banked”. The new wave of roller derby was born in Texas
in 2000 and not only focuses on the sport before the
spectacle, but maintaining a “for the skater, by the skater”
do-it-yourself ethic where the girls run the show.
IS THERE ELBOWING/TRIPPING/FIGHTING/ETC?
Absolutely NOT! Safety is a top priority and not only do
new rollergirls learn how to avoid injury at their first
practice, the rules were developed by WFTDA member
leagues to encourage sportsmanship and athleticism over
the showy pro-wrestling-style shenanigans of yesteryear.
BUT IS IT REAL?
As real as it gets! The game is extremely strategic and the
athleticism, action and hard hits are 100% REAL. Most
teams practice 6-8 hours per week. The flat track enables
us to set up most anywhere, without having to build or
transport a banked track. There is no predetermined
outcome, and there are no staged antics and no fake hits.
WHAT HAPPENS AT A “BOUT”?
“Bout” is the term for a roller derby game, and they
include more than your average sporting event. Live, local
music is almost always included, and often there are
performances from local entertainment groups of all
varieties. There is no reason a serious sport can’t also be
fun and cool!

Starting in 2009, all donations from OKVD’s half-time raffles
went directly to the “Help Tequila” fund, benefitting injured
former rollergirl Tahira Johnson, a.k.a. Tequila Mockingbird, a
former Windy City Roller who relocated to OKC after a
devastating spinal cord injury. In November 2009 OKVD
hosted a charity “Mash-Up Bout” featuring rollergirls from 6
other leagues and 4 different states to benefit Tequila
Mockingbird. The bout raised about $2000 toward her cause
and the benefit bout has become an annual event.
For two years the Victory Dolls have also participated in the
Challenge Air program, helping encourage the belief that
"every disabled person should see the world from a different

Victory Dolls are building local momentum as Oklahoma City's only
league sanctioned by the sport's international sanctioning body,
Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). As we enter our
fifth season, our large on-line presence and significant local news

Consistent with our mission, a percentage of proceeds from each bout during our 2010 season benefitted the YWCA of
Oklahoma City. The YWCA is the only certified provider of services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in
Oklahoma County. More than 20,000 women, men, and children receive help each year through the YWCA’s programs, including
crisis services counseling, child care, transitional housing, and assistance and education for victims of domestic violence and
sexual assault. For 2011, The Oklahoma Victory Dolls intend to contributing to the YWCA, as well as, many other deserving
charities.
As a nonprofit organization, skaters, referees, and volunteers are not paid for their participation in our league.
The Oklahoma Victory Dolls rely solely on sponsorship, fund raisers, and skaters’ monthly dues to help support league expenses.
Your sponsorship will help our league continue to develop this unique sports/entertainment offering in Oklahoma City, while
promoting local charitable services and opportunities to our fan-base.
The Oklahoma Victory Dolls anticipate a growing audience even more this season due to our steady increase in marketing,
promoting, and charitable activities. As a sponsor of the Oklahoma Victory Dolls, you and/or company would be featured
alongside our positive, athletic female image. We are a strong, all female, do-it-yourself organization with a goal to deliver a
unique women’s sport to the Oklahoma community.
Please review the following page which will explain the various sponsorship packages we have available and what you will
receive in return for your level of support. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or to create your own tailor-made
packet based upon a discount or trade of goods in exchange for sponsorship.
Thank you for your time and consideration!
