THE EPHRATA REVIEW
The fall
and rise of
Speedwell
Forge
J.T. LIEHR
Review Columnist
For decades, Speedwell Forge
Lake, near Elm, was a popular
spot for fishermen, canoers, picnickers and wildlife. People came
from all around to enjoy this beautiful lake.
Then came the last days of summer 2011, when two storms caused
flooding that critically damaged
the dam that held the lake in place.
In the interest of public safety, the
lake was drained. Lancaster County had lost a gem.
But thanks to the efforts of Rep.
Gordon Denlinger and private citizens, such as the Save Speedwell
organization, we will be getting
our lake back!
Rep. Denlinger saw the opportunity to make strong requests from
the State budget to obtain funds
needed to rebuild the dam. It won’t
happen overnight, but we fishermen can count on getting this spot
back.
For their efforts, Hook, Line &
Sinker is proud to present Rep.
Denlinger and his staff with the
first annual “Angler of the Year
Award.” Local fisherman can obtain lots of information at his office
in Ephrata, including booklets on
regulations, trout stocking schedules and general fishing information.
Next time: ice fishing in Lancaster County.
Local fisherman J.T. Liehr has
lived in the Ephrata/Lititz area for
22 years and has fished almost every square inch of it. Look for his
column to appear in future editions
of the Lititz Record and Ephrata Review.
Soccer Shots
to offer
soccer clinics
Soccer Shots is excited to announce its indoor Winter 2013 season kick off at local locations.
Shots Shots is a national franchise which offers quality introductory training sessions for
children ages 2-8. Entrepreneur
Magazine named Soccer Shots the
#1 Children’s Fitness Franchise in
2012.
The
Lancaster/Lebanon/Berks
Soccer Shots has been running its
program for over six years in Lancaster, Lebanon, and Berks Counties. Sessions are offered weekly
and help children develop individual soccer skills as well as coordination, balance, and agility. The
program also focuses on character
building skills, which are essential
to a child’s growth.
Recently, Sarah Traphagen said,
“Our 3½ year old daughter has
done soccer shots for two sessions
and loves it. Even before the second session ended, she was already
asking to sign up again. My husband and I love the fact that not
only is she learning the fundamentals of playing the game but teamwork, respect, and cooperation
as well. Keep up the great work!
We’ll be seeing you for session 3!”
The winter season of Soccer
Shots will take place at several locations open to the public starting
the week of Jan. 14 and it will run
through the first week of March.
Sessions will be run one day a
week for 30-35 minutes. Children
receive a prize at the end of each
session and a certificate of completion at the end of the season.
The Lancaster Co. locations include: New Holland Rec Center

Dutchland
Rollers
seek new
skaters
Many area women set vague fitness goals for the New Year, but
don’t have concrete goals or steps
for achieving them. Not many
think to change their bodies and
their lifestyles by trying out for a
roller derby team.
The Dutchland Rollers, Lancaster’s WFTDA roller derby league, is
hosting informational recruitment
meetings in January for prospective skaters and volunteers.
Skaters who are selected for the
spring “skater tot” class will train
with a derby coach, reviewing basic
roller skating skills, learning roller
derby specific skating techniques,
adding rules and gameplay, and
training to be a competition-eligible roller derby player within three
to six months.
To play this intense, full-contact
sport, Dutchland is looking for female athletes, especially team-oriented women with a resilient, cando attitude who will get back up
after they fall down. Skaters must
be at least 18 years old. Women of
all shapes, sizes, and levels of experience are welcome, though a
sports or skating background will
often give trainees an advantage,
and all must be prepared to train
hard.
Roller derby isn’t just a sport,
though. Like many of today’s roller derby organizations, the Dutchland Rollers not only devote their
time to athleticism and competition, but also focus on empowering
women, giving back to the community, and running a sports organization.
Dutchland also welcomes men
and women who may not be competitive skaters, but who wish to
support Dutchland’s mission by
officiating or volunteering.
Good referees are essential to
the fast-paced sport, both to ensure the integrity of competition
and to ensure the safety of skaters. Dutchland can train men and
women to be WFTDA certified
referees. Non-skating officials can
track penalties, keep score, keep
time, and manage the penalty box.
Additionally, putting on bouts and
running the league requires many
hands. Dutchland also has a place
for skating coaches, derby coaches,
and athletic trainers, sports announcers, sports photographers,
statisticians, marketers and businesspeople.
Women interested in skating
can find out about pre-tryout bootcamps and ask questions at Dutchland’s skater recruitment meeting
on Jan. 2 at 9 p.m. Skater try-outs
will be held on Jan. 16 at 9 p.m. at
the Overlook Activities Center, 301
Golf Drive, Lancaster. The ref and
support staff recruitment meeting
is on Jan. 13 at 11 a.m.
