Motorcraft Coolant - Power Stroke Diesel
Protect Your Power Stroke® Diesel
Engine with the right Motorcraft Coolant
Using the proper engine coolant is important to the operation of your Power Stroke Diesel
engine. Ford recommends owners use specifically formulated coolants in their engines. Keep
your Power Stroke Diesel running great by following recommended scheduled maintenance
and using quality original equipment parts* offered at your local Ford dealer.
Why is using the proper Motorcraft coolant so important?
Ensures proper coolant flow inside your cooling system
Protects internal components from corrosion
Using the wrong type of coolant and colors or even mixing
different coolants together can lead to major issues:
Sludge forming in the cooling passages
Internal component corrosion and failure
Overheating of engine and components
Cylinder wall cavitation
Loss of engine performance
Different engines require different chemical concentrations in
their coolant. Proper levels of nitrite and silicate are what give
Motorcraft coolant its ability to protect your Power Stroke Diesel
engine. Many other coolants do not have the necessary nitrite
and silicate levels. Silicates and nitrites protect against:
Corrosion and clogging of aluminum
(oil coolers & EGR coolers)
Cavitation on cylinder walls
Motorcraft Supplemental Coolant Additives recharge
depleted silicates and nitrites in the cooling system
and should only be used when necessary.
*See reverse side for coolant product
and maintenance schedule information.
The engine coolant system nitrite level should be checked at the mileage
or equivalent hour intervals specified by the maintenance schedule.

When should I flush my Power Stroke Diesel engine’s cooling system?
A coolant flush should be performed when contaminants are found inside the engine’s cooling system. Consult the Ford Workshop Manual to
determine if a coolant flush is appropriate (see your local Ford dealer for more details). If a flush is recommended, use Motorcraft VC-9 Diesel
Cooling System Iron Cleaner. Motorcraft VC-9 is designed to remove rust and other cooling system contaminants that restrict flow inside the
cooling system. It is important to remember that a flush is not appropriate for every situation and should only be used when specified by the Ford
Workshop Manual.
