ELLIS - Dr. Calvert N.f 90, Brethren
Village, Lancaster, formerly of Hun
tingdon, died at 3:04 a.m. April 7,1995,
at his winter residence in Sarasota,
Fla. Former Juniata College presi
dent and longtime Huntingdon resi
dent. Lived at his current residence
since 1987: Born April 16,1904, in Zion
City, 111., son of Dr. Charles Ellis and
Emma Reed (Nice) Ellis. Preceded in
death by parents, an infant son and
brother, Rev. Dr. John D. Ellis, who
died April 1,1995. Survived by wife of
65 years, Elizabeth (Wertz) Ellis;
daughter, Mrs. Ronald Laird Cherry
(Elizabeth Anne Ellis), Huntingdon,
associate professor of history at Juni
ata College; and son, David Wertz
Ellis, Cambridge, Mass., president
and director of the Museum of Sci
ence in Boston, married to Marion
(Schmitt) Ellis; also five grandchil
dren and two great-grandchildren.

ren. An active church member, Dr.
Ellis served as moderator of the
Church of the Brethren annual conr
ference in 1948. He served the church
as a member of the General Board
for nine years and spoke at dedica
tion and anniversary ceremonies in
many congregations. Graduated Juni
ata College in 1923, received a BA
from Prince*- a Theological Semi
nary, earned ah MA from Princeton
University and received his PhD.
from Yale University. In addition, Dr.
Ellis received several honorary de
grees, including a Doctor of Laws de
gree from .Juniata College. Dr. Ellis
was also active in the national educa
tion arena. He served as a member of
the Advisory Committe to the House
of Representatives Committee on Ed
ucation and Labor from 1944 to 1948.
This committee proposed what came
to be known as the GI Bill and later
the federal college housing program
for GIs. Dr. Ellis chaired the Associa
tion of American Colleges in 1968,
having served on and chaired the
Commission on the Arts and the Com
mission on Legislation. In addition, he
served on the Accrediting Commis
sion of the Middle States Association
of Colleges and Secondary Schools
and chaired more than two dozen
evaluation teams. He served as chair
of the Association in 1966. Since his
retirement in 1968, Dr. Ellis assisted
a number of colleges and universities
in updating their governance. Dr. and
Mrs. Ellis returned to Huntingdon in
1931 when Dr. Ellis accepted a facul
ty appointment at Juniata College.

Dr. Ellis chaired the faculty commit
tee which introduced a curriculum
which led to Juniata's accreditation
by the Association of American Uni
versities in 1937. In 1943, Dr. Ellis
was named the college's seventh
president, a position he held until his
retirement in 1968. Dr. Ellis guided
Juniata College through many of our
country's most turbulent years, the
World War II years of the 40s, the Ko
rean Conflict of the 50s and the Civil
Rights Era of the early 60s. Through
the guidance of Dr. Ellis, the college
prospered as it received national rec
ognition. In addition to his academic
pursuits, Dr. Ellis was jmanager of
the D.M. Wertz Orchards in Waynesboro, Pa, from 1940 to 1961. He
served as a member of the boards of
directors of the First National Bank
of Huntingdon and its successor bank,
Penn Central National Bank, from
1947 to 1987. Dr. Ellis chaired the
PCNB from 1977 to 1983. No public

Emerick of Johnstown, born March
20, 1930, in Johnstown, died May 22,
1995, of heart failure in Philadelphia.
Received his undergraduate degree, a
bachelor of science in finance, from
Pennsylvania State University, where
he also completed coursework for a
master of business administration in
finance. He interrupted his under
graduate studies to join the United
States Navy during the Korean Con
flict, where he served as a parachute
rigger on the Aircraft Carrier Coral
Sea. He was honorably discharged in
1960. After Penn State, he worked as
a municipal bond analyst and trader
with Philadelphia investment bank
ing firm of C.C. Collings, and was
named youngest member of the Mu
nicipal Bond Club of Philadelphia in
the late 1960s. Survived by mother,
Elva (Hare) Emerick of Johnstown,
and his son, Erick Omega von Emer
ick of Philadelphia. Interment, 11
