The meeting was one of the pleasantest in
the history of the Vosselag. – Next year

Vossalaget i Amerika kunde dette ar feire sin
arlige Jonsokfest ved St. Olaf College i Northfield,
Minnesota, og denne festlige sammenkomst av
vossinger vilde vi ikke ga glipp av, nar avstanden
mellem Santon, Syd Dakota, og skolebyen
Northfield er bare 270 mil. Sa fikk jeg overtale

tommer av den våte vare hø1jet ned pa en times tid.
The Vosselag in America this year celebrated
their annual Mid-summer meeting at St. Olaf
College in Northfield, Minnesota, and this festive
gathering is not to be missed because the distance
between Canton, South Dakota and the college town
of Northfield is only 270 miles. Therefore, I
prevailed on my son-in-law, Otto Sivesind, who is
married to my daughter Marta, to take me in his
car to the meeting town.
We had agreed to leave at the break of dawn
on June 18. However, there came a rainstorm —
one of the unusual ones, in that we got three
inches poured down on us within an hour.
Men regnet gjorde ingen skade pa den solide
brolagte landevei og avsted bar det. Vi la ruten
gjennem
Minnesota-byerne
Worthington,
Jackson, Fairmont, Bue Earth, Albert Lea,
Qwatonna og Fairbault. Mellem Worthington og
Jackson styrtregnet det hele tiden, sa det var
vanskelig a se for den som satt ved styrehjulet;
men ellers var det oppholdsveir til vi kom til
Northfield. Der kom regnet ned i sa stride
strømme, at vi hadde litt bryderi med a finde St.
Olaf Avenue, som viser veien til Maniton
Høyden, hvor St. Olaf College Campus først ble
grunnlagt i året 1878.
Et ganske betydeligt antal vossinger hadde
infunnet seg før vi kom, flere kom 1ørdag og
søndag. Hadde veirmannen været litt mere
hensynfull vilde vistnok mange flere fullblods,
halvparts vossinger, og adopterte vossinger funnet
veien til Northfield og St. Olaf College Campus.
Til festmåltid eller banketten lørdag kveld var
omtrent 200 møtt fram.
Om stevnet og oppholdet i Northfield bare dette:
Den lokale komite og St. Olaf College folkene
hadde ordnet alt så koselgt og hyggeligt for oss med
hensyn til soveplass og maltider, alt pa skolens
Campus
Sekretær Mykkeltvedt vil levere referat av
stevnets program og hva i Vosselaget gjorde og
bestemte. For mitt vedkommende synes jeg det var et
svært fint og godt stevne i alle måter. Bestyrelsen
ble gjenvalgt med fynd og klem som takk for godt
gjort arbeid for Vosselaget. Stor-byen Seattle,
Washington, blir stevnebyen neste ar.
Dette vosselagsstevne ble ogsa i betydelig grad
en minnefest for avdøde Lars Wilhelm Boe, som
var bestyrer for St. Olaf College i 24 ar fra 1918
til 1942. Hans far var pastor Nils Boe, utvandret
fra Sunnhordland, og hans mor var Anna
Larsdotter Rekve, født pa gården Rekve på,
Voss. Han var ofte pa lagets stevner og tjente
også som formann et ar. Som et talende bevis på
den store innsats dr. Boe hadde gjort ved denne
betydelige laereanstalt, ble det aret 1953 oppført til
Nevertheless, the rain didn't harm the solid
bridged highways and off we went. We took the
route through the Minnesota towns of
Worthington, Jackson, Fairmont, Blue Earth,
Albert Lea, Owatonna and Faribault. Between
Worthington and Jackson, it poured the entire time
so it was difficult for the one at the steering wheel;
otherwise it was good weather until we got there.
Then it rained in streams so we had a little bother
finding St. Olaf Avenue, which showed us the way
to Maniton Heights where the St. Olaf College
Campus was first founded in 1878.
A significant number of Vossings had arrived
before us, several came Saturday and Sunday. If
the weatherman had been a little more considerate
perhaps many more full-blooded, half-part
Vossings and adopted Vossings would have found
the way to Northfield and the St. Olaf College
Campus. About 200 people attended the banquet
Saturday night.
Of the meeting and stay in Northfield, just this:
the local committee and St. Olaf College people
had made everything so comfortable and pleasant
for us with regards to sleeping rooms and meals,
all on the school's campus.
Secretary Mykkeltvedt will deliver the report
about the stevne's program and what the Vosselag
did and decided. As far as I was concerned, it was
a very fine and good meeting in every aspect. The
board of directors was re-elected with enthusiasm
and a hug as thanks for good work done for the
Vosselag. The city of Seattle, Washington will be
the stevne town next year.
To a certain degree, this Vosselag Stevne was also
a commemoration for the deceased Lars Wilhelm
Boe, who was the principal of St. Olaf College for 24
years from 1918 until 1942. His father was Pastor Nils
Boe, emigrated from Sunnhordland, and his mother
was Anna Larsdatter Rekve, born on the Rekve farm
at Voss. He often attended to lag's stevner and served
as president one year. As telling evidence of the great
effect Dr. Boe on this educational institution this was
erected in 1953 in his memory and is a distinguished

Om Northfield og St. Olaf College kan i

St. Olaf College begyndte sin virksomhet her
året 1874, altsa 80 ar siden. De første klasser ble
holdt en bygning nede i byen, Den første
bygning på, det nuvserende ble oppfart aret 1878
Ettersom årene gikk og elevtallet vokste ble flere
solide bygninger oppført inntil der nu er 21
bygninger på de 180 acres (omtrent 700 norske
mal) som utgjer skolens Campus. Skolen driver
dessuten to farmer nær Northfield pa tilsammen
1000 acres.
Elevtallet ved St. Olaf College i skolearet
1953—1954 var 1458. Der er ansatt 105 lærere
ved skolen. Dr. Clemens M. Granskou har varet
skolens bestyrer siden 1948.
St. Olaf College har ogsa opprettet en
radiostasjon — W.C.A.L. er dens navn. Den har
også studio i Minneapolis. I en lang rekke av ar
har der fra denne stasjon blitt kringkastet
gudstjenester pa det norske språk hver eneste
søndag. Stasjonen kan høres over hele
Minnesota og flere nabostater. Den leverer
dessuten et omfattende program og har et stort
antall lyttere.
Etter minnegudstjensten for dr. Boe søndag
foremiddag ble det å si farvel og takk for godt
samvær i Northfield. På hjemveien la vi ruten forbi
Mankato, Madelig, St. James og Windom. Avlingen
så godt ut overalt hvor regnet ikke hadde gjort
skade på lavere land. Da vi kom hjem ble vi fortalt
at det var faldt 5 tommer mere regn mens vi var pa

About Northfield and St. Olaf College we can
briefly describe the following: The city has a
population of 8000 and lies about 40 miles south
of Minneapolis and St. Paul. A third of the
inhabitants are of Norwegian heritage. The first
pioneers came here 100 years ago. Before that
time, Northfield and the areas surrounding it were
a hunting ground and playground for Indian tribes.
Northfield has had an even progression and has
become a modern town. In addition to St. Olaf
College there is another big school so Northfield is
a significant seat of learning.
St. Olaf College began its activity here in 1874,
thus 80 years ago. The first classes were held in a
building down in the town. The first building on
the present site was built in 1878. as the years went
by and the student population increased, several
substantial buildings were erected until there are
now 21 structures on the 180 acres (about 700
Norwegian mål) which constitute the school's
campus. The school also operates two farms near
Northfield making altogether 1000 acres.
The student population in the school year
1953—1954 was 1458. 105 instructors are
employed by the school. Dr. Clemens M. Granskou
has been president of the school since 1948.
St. Olaf College has also started a radio station
— WCAL is its name. For many years this station
has broadcast church services in Norwegian every
Sunday that can be heard over all of Minnesota and
the neighboring states. It delivers a all-inclusive
schedule and has a great number of listeners
After the memorial service for Dr. Boe
Sunday forenoon it was to say farewell and
thank you for good company in Northfield. On
the way home we traveled via Mankato,
Madelia, St. James and Windom. The harvest
seemed good everywhere except where the rain
had damaged it in low-lying land. When we
arrived at home, we were told that they had
gotten five more inches of rain while we were at the
vosseleir i Minnesota.

Comment: This is reproduced from a clipping from Voss' "Hordaland" found in the
effects of the late Karen Nuland Borrud which she no doubt had after her mother, and
mine, Synneva Bjarnesdatter Mølster Nuland, who was a die-hard Vossing and a regular
attendee of the stevner, but not evidently this one. It probably came from the
"Hordaland" as evidenced by the use of Nynorsk. The meeting was on June 18-19, 1954.
