See Beyond the Still. With the EOS System. We can now all see
See Beyond the Still. With the EOS System. We can now all see beyond the still, in Full HD video, with every
frame as beautiful as a photograph. It’s moving photography. Inspired. By Canon. Whether you’re a professional photographer
looking to push the limits of your creativity or an amateur looking for more professional results, the EOS system has a camera
for you. Beginners will love the simple yet sophisticated EOS Rebel T2i. It’s the only camera in its class with an 18 megapixel
CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor. At the pro level, the EOS-1D Mark IV is Canon’s most advanced SLR with 10 fps, 16.1
megapixel CMOS sensor, and the most advanced auto focusing technology ever created by Canon. And then there’s the EOS 5D
Mark II – the only camera in the world* to combine a 21.1 megapixel, full-frame CMOS sensor with 1080p Full HD video capability.
Closing the gap between amateurs and professionals, the EOS 7D is the first EOS ever with 18 megapixels, 8 fps, a Dual DIGIC
4 Image Processor, and approximately 100% field of view viewfinder to take all photographers
to the next level. So no matter which camera you choose, Canon makes the creative process
easy, rewarding and most importantly, inspiring.

President’s Message
The book that you’re holding marks the final
chapter in my two consecutive terms as President
of the PPAGLA. It has been one of the most
challenging and rewarding experiences of my
career.
Among my proudest achievements are the
bridges we have built with law enforcement. My goal was to put a yearbook into
every firehouse and police station in the city of Los Angeles. It is a tradition I hope
future boards will uphold.
We have become a voice to be considered within the LAPD. They seek our advice
on media access issues, and trust what we tell them. We have contributed to
changes in police policy, involved ourselves in training, and are now a voice in
media credentialing and access issues.
Publication of this yearbook itself is a triumph. The members owe a debt of
gratitude to Just One More Editor and Contest Chairman Joel Lugavere. He has
been the driving force in the continued publication of this book. Joel has also done
a magnificent job as the dinner chairman. Nobody works harder than Joel.

Thanks also go to Edna Simpson who has managed to keep an accurate
accounting as our Treasurer. Dave Fernandez and Arturo Quezada, who chair
the video committee, have done a commendable job in keeping the television
members represented.
Music & Performing Arts Award.............76
Rick Meyer also deserves high praise for his diligence, dedication, and hard work in
chairing the Membership Committee. Without Rick, we would have no membership
I.D. Cards, or Media Parking Plaqards. In addition to being a valued friend, he is
part of the bedrock that sustains this organization.
Andy Castle Award..........................94
Your new President, Bob Riha Jr. is taking the reins at a challenging time in the
news industry. The profession is contracting and evolving into something new. Our
future as an organization rests in his hands, and the board, as they strive to keep us
relevant in the ever-changing world of the new media. With Bob as President, we
are in good hands.

been my mentor.

Save a Dog Like Eldora.
Adopt Your New Best Friend!
Rescued from a puppy mill, Eldora is feeling soft grass under her
paws and the touch of kind hands for the first time in her life. Like so
many homeless animals with special needs, she’s come to Best Friends
to heal from her hard life’s journey and get a fresh start.
Together with our members, Best Friends is working towards a time when every pet has a loving
home and there are No More Homeless Pets®. Help make the dream a reality by adopting your next
dog from your local shelter instead of buying a puppy at a pet store or over the Internet.
Thousands of healthy dogs are in shelters waiting to be adopted. Give one a home and what every
dog deserves—the love, care and happiness that come from being part of a family.

Loran Fraizer Smith
PPAGLA President (1961) Loran Fraizer Smith died Oct. 9 at age of 91.
Practically born with a camera in his hand, 12-year-old Loran bought an Argus C3 in 1930. He
made his way into the darkrooms of the De Moines Register at age 16, with photo assignments
following soon after.
Moving to California, he worked his way though various photo studios until joining the Navy during
WWII and serving in the motion picture unit of famed Hollywood director John Ford where he
taught himself how to operate the 35mm Mitchell movie camera he was issued . “I came from
Hollywood so I guess they assumed I knew how to use a movie camera!” Loran remarked in a 2002
video interview.
Stationed at Pearl Harbor, he was assigned to the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet public relations unit
where he covered nine major combat operations from sea and air. Armed with a K-20 4X5 roll film aerial camera and his personal twin
lens Rolleiflex, Loran flew pre-invasion missions over the islands of Pelelui and Tarawa in a B-25 medium bomber photographing enemy
movements and gun emplacements before the U.S. Marine landings. Loran served under Admiral Chester Nimitz and photographed
his historic meeting with Gen. Douglas MacArthur and President Franklin Roosevelt in July of 1944. He was never able to see his
photographs. The raw film was routed back to Washington D.C., where one of Loran’s combat photos was chosen as one of the 12
best Navy Combat photos of WWII. Admiral Nimitz personally presented Loran with his Bronze Star medal.
Near the end of the war, Loran was re-assigned to serve with master photographer Capt. Edward Steichen, Director of Naval Combat
Photography in Washington D.C., where he served until the end of the war.
After the war, Loran worked for Life Magazine for three years. He joined the Los Angeles Mirror when it opened in 1948 where he
photographed general news, celebrites, presidents, world figures and discovered his passion for photographing ballet. During the
1950s and 60s he photographed the world-famous figures of the ballet as they toured Los Angeles. Loran stayed at the Mirror until it
folded and then became a travel agent for the rest of his life, occasionally selling photos of his travels.
A great supporter of the PPAGALA, Loran was a regular fixture at the annual awards dinners and was presented the PPAGLA Lifetime
Acheivement Award in March 2003.
Jim Perry
Jim Perry, retired L.A. City Fire Captain and long-time supporter of the PPAGLA, died in a car
accident on Dec. 2 near his home in Minden, Nev., as he traveled to Los Angeles to attend the
annual United Fire Fighters of L.A City holiday party.
A graduate of Van Nuys High School in 1957, Jim became a fireman in 1961. He served 20 years with
the L.A. City Fire Department, retiring at the rank of Captain II.
Jim was a founding father of the United Firefighters of L.A. City, Local 112. The UFLAC has
sponsored our annual still and video Fire Photo of the Year Award for many years to recognize the
photographers who work alongside the firefighters of Los Angeles.
Jim worked closely with our members as a Los Angeles Fire Department Public Information Officer
as well as Commander of Photo Services and Public Relations Units.
However, most PPAGLA members met Jim when he published their fire photos as editor of “The Los Angeles Firefighter” newspaper
(est. 1970). Jim was also the editor of the Los Angeles Firemen’s Relief Association magazine, “Firemen’s Grapevine” for more than 13
years. Jim also served as the former Executive Editor of “American Firefighter” magazine.
Jim has received more than 160 “Awards for Excellence in Journalism” from the Greater Los Angeles Press Club, International
Association of Firefighters, International Labor Communication Association and the Western Labor Communications Association.
In 2005, the PPAGLA recognized Jim for his professionalism as a journalist and his boundless assistance to press photographers for
nearly 40 years with an Honorary PPAGLA Life Membership at our 2005 annual awards dinner. In true press room sadistic style Jim was
was presented a rigged plaque that emitted a ball of smoke and flame and nearly singed his beard off! Jim loved it!
Jim is survived by his wife Bookey and five children, John, Ron, Christine, Niles and Justin. They have five grandchildren, one greatgrandchild.
Jim Perry represents the best of the close professional bond that develops between press photographers and firefighters who work
side by side in the field.

Neil Clemans
Neil Clemans was born on Feb. 7, 1920, in Seattle, Wash. As a teenager, he enjoyed baseball and
track. Neil enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force on Jan. 2, 1942, three weeks after Pearl Harbor. During
WWII, Neil served stateside, in Africa and in the Middle East — as a sergeant and weather observer
for the 19th Weather Squadron. Following the war, he graduated with a degree in journalism from
USC and in 1947 began his career at the Valley News newspaper in North Hollywood.
He was hired as a photographer at the Los Angeles Mirror when it opened in October 1948 and
stayed until the day it closed in January 1962.
Neil worked with many of the original members of the “2nd generation” of Press Photographers
such as Bill Beebe, Bill Knight, Ken Dare, Bob Martin, Loran Smith, Cal Montney and Delmar Watson.
The Los Angeles Mirror was to be a tabloid, picture newspaper that publisher Virgil Pinkley (onetime head of UPI Europe during WWII) said was to become the New York Daily News of the West. Neil was glad to be one of this
new breed of 20-year-old “livewire” photographers earning $65 a week. He covered the stars, sports and news of the 1950s and 60s
including Marilyn Monroe, Joe Dimagio, Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Joan Crawford, Judy Garland, Elvis Presley, three presidents
and the stripper Tempest Storm! In 1961, Neil was named The Mirror’s chief photographer.
After the Mirror folded in 1962, Neil became a publicist for NBC. He worked on numerous television shows, including The Wonderful
World of Disney, Bonanza, The Virginian, I Dream of Jeannie, and the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Dean Martin Show and Andy
Williams Show.
Upon leaving NBC, ever the entrepreneur, Neil bought into the Postal Instant Press franchise that he and Gilda ran for 25 years until
retirement in 1989. His foresight, dedication to advanced technology, outstanding customer service, and hardworking staff kept his
Burbank PIP store the No.1 location for 10 years running. Neil and Gilda printed the JOM Jr. for the PPAGLA at his store for years.
The images from Neil’s personal 35mm Leica camera during WWII are probably the only record of the people and events of the Darfur
weather station and become the subject of his self-published book “Marooned in Darfur” which is part of the Library of Congress
Veterans History Project. In 2007, Neil produced “Picturing the ‘50s”, a book of his images from the Los Angeles Mirror newspaper.
Neil was inducted into the NBC Press Hall of Fame, and in 2001 he received PPAGLA Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his
pioneering photographic professionalism and advancement of news photography.
Neil died of natural causes at home April 20, 2009, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife Gilda of 61 years, their two daughters
Laurie Clemans (owner of a marketing and branding firm) and Dr. Kathleen Clemans (a Los Angeles-based dentist),t his sister Diana
Lengle, and three grandchildren.
The DAR confirmed his lineage to one of the first families of Virginia and a patriot of the Revolutionary War.
Cliff Otto
Cliff Otto, 80, a photographer for the Los Angeles Times for nearly 30 years who worked primarily
in the paper’s Orange County edition, died of pneumonia March 1 at a nursing home in Sun City,
California, according to his wife, Fran.
Cliff served as PPAGLA Vice President in 1970 and on the Boardof Directors in the 70s and 80s.

Coy Watson
Child Movie Star, News Photographer, Inventor, Television Pioneer, Author
James Caughey “Coy” Watson, Jr., 96, died on March 14 of complications of stomach cancer
near his home in Alpine, Calif. He was born Nov. 16, 1912, in his home in Edendale, California, the
oldest of nine children born to Golda and Coy Watson.
At age 4, Coy remembered watching his grandfather, James, a captain in the Salvation Army,
magically developing film in their pantry. Coy got his “feet wet” in photography in the Boy Scouts
and his uncle, George R. Watson, founder of the PPAGLA, let him “sweep the floors” at Pacific and
Atlantic Newspictures Syndicate where he made his first published news pictures. P+A became
Acme New Pictures, later becoming UPI and now, Reuters.
From 1935 to 1940, Coy worked with Acme New Pictures, The Los Angeles Post Record, The Los
Angeles Times, and The Los Angeles Herald Express. Watson covered the big Los Angeles news stories of the day, including the
mysterious death of Thelma Todd and Franklin Roosevelt’s visit to Los Angeles. In addition, he was an official photographer of the Los
Angeles Olympic Games in 1932. Coy’s photo of Stan Laurel appeared in the first issue of LIFE magazine — November 1936.
In 1939, Coy invented and manufactured the Coy Watson Lite Beam Focuser for the Speed Graphic camera that assisted focusing
in total darkness. It’s believed this was the first time a battery was ever placed in a camera. Coy sold hundreds of focusers to press
photographers around the county.
Coy served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II (1942-1945) as a Boatswains Mate and Chief Photographer. Shot in 1943, Coy’s
16mm film of Madam Chiang Kai-shek at the Hollywood Bowl is believed to be the first filmed news event to appear on Los Angeles
television. There were less than 40 television sets in the city.
In 1948, Coy became a TV news “stringer” for WPIX and TeleNews, New York, TV news services. In 1949, NBC/New York assigned Coy
to cover the historic Kathy Fiscus story – the story of a little girl who had fallen into an abandoned well. This was the first live television
broadcast, and it aired continuously for 52 hours.
Also in 1949, Coy shot Hollywood’s first live-action television commercial on film for Vermont Motors. It aired between televised Santa
Anita horse races. That same year Coy’s filming of “Operation Endurance” for McMillian Oil, of two pilots in a single-engine plane and
their non-stop in-air refueling for more than 1,000 hours (42 days) became television’s first film documentary.
In 1949, Coy and syndicated Hollywood columnist Erskine Johnson produced “Hollywood Reel,” the first film-series featuring motion
picture stars and their real lives in Hollywood, syndicated for television. The 52, 30-minute shows were broadcast across the United
States revealing stars at play and behind the scenes in Hollywood. In 1992, the historic films aired on AMC (American Movie Classics)
and ran for five years.
During the 1950s and 60s, Coy was a television news cameraman and helped to establish the film news departments at CBS, ABC and
KTLA. He covered the first atomic bomb tests in Yucca Flats, Nev., and joined the White House Press Corp in Denver, Colo., during the
hospitalization of President Eisenhower. He was also news director at NBC’s KCRA in Sacramento. In 1965, Coy took his pioneering spirit
and family to Perth, Western Australia, to train the television film news department at TVW, ABC (Australia Broadcasting Co.)
Coy returned to the United States and served as public relations officer for a fast food corporation and built miniature cameras for oil
drilling exploration. In 1984, Coy retired and moved to Rancho Bernardo in San Diego County.
Coy served as PPAGLA President in 1946 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 for his dedication, pioneering foresight
and professionalism in the arena of news photography.
In 1999, Coy Watson Jr., his parents Coy Sr. and Golda Watson, and five brothers and three sisters were honored with a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame. Known as the “First Family Of Hollywood,” Coy Sr. started with the Mack Sennett Studio in 1912 and collectively
the family worked with Hollywood’s biggest stars in more than 1,000 motion pictures. From the age of 21 months, Coy Jr. appeared in
65 early silent movies, and in 2001 Coy published his book “The Keystone Kid: Tales of Early Hollywood.” In 2004, a documentary about
his life received a San Diego Emmy Award “San Diego Insider: Coy Watson, The Keystone Kid,” by COX San Diego Channel 4.
Coy is survived by his wife, “Willie,” daughter Pattie, son James Caughey “Jim” Watson III, three grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. His sister Louise Roberts and brothers Billy and Garry are the surviving members of the nine Watson siblings. Coy served
in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II (1942-1945) as a Boatswains Mate and Chief Photographer. In 1943, Coy’s 16mm film of
Madam Chiang Kai-shek at the Hollywood Bowl is believed to be the first filmed news event to appear on Los Angeles television.
