EFFECT OF W I N G L E T S ON PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING
QUALITIES OF GENERAL AVIATION AIRCRAFT1

ABSTRACT
Recent flight and wind tunnel evaluations of winglets mounted on general aviation airplanes have shown
improvements in cruise fuel efficiency, and climbing and turning performance.
INTRODUCTION
Methods for improving aircraft efficiency are continually being investigated and innovative aerodynamic drag
reduction technologies are constantly being sought. The winglet concept appears to offer significant increases in
aerodynamic and structural efficiency by reducing aircraft lift-induced drag without overly penalizing wing weight.
PERFORMANCE
Recent tests have examined the effect of winglets on the performance and handling qualities of a light, singleengine general aviation airplane. Although the airplane tested has a relatively low wing loading, installation of
winglets improves the cruise efficiency, and climb and turn performance.
Wind tunnel tests predict, and flight tests have confirmed, significant improvements in climb performance due to
the decreased induced drag with winglets installed. As a result, winglets may offer sufficient improvement in climb
performance to obviate the need for a gross weight reduction to meet above airworthiness requirements.
When a wing is retrofitted with wing-tip mounted winglets, the following performance changes will occur:
1. The primary effect of winglets is to reduce lift-induced drag.
2. The profile drag of the winglets will negate some of the induced drag reduction.
3. The required airplane lift coefficient will be reached at a lower angle of attack than for the wing without
winglets. (The lift curve slope increases due to an increase in effective wing aspect ratio). The reduced angle of
attack will result in a changed configuration profile drag.
4. The interference effect on drag at the wing-winglet juncture may offset some of the induced drag reduction.
In spite of the slightly lower speed for cruise at maximum lift-to-drag ratio or the higher altitude required for
maximum fuel economy at a given speed for the configuration with winglets, the absolute benefit of winglets on fuel
economy is significant for all conditions except high speed (160 knots) at low altitudes.
STABILITY AND CONTROL
The influence of winglets on the static and dynamic handling qualities of an airplane can be very significant.
Longitudinal Winglets on an approximately unswept wing should not significantly affect the longitudinal
stability and control characteristics of the airplane. The phugoid stability and short-period response will only change
slightly.
Lateral-Directional Major changes may occur in the lateral-directional stability and control characteristics of
an airplane due to installation of winglets. Primarily the roll due to sideslip derivative, CLB, and the sideforce due to
sideslip derivative, CYB, will be affected. Both dihedral effect and CYB will become more stable due to winglets.
Stalling Characteristics Frequently winglets cause an increase in maximum lift coefficient. The stall
characteristics of a winglet-e quipped airplane were slightly improved when compared with the basic airplane. In the
case of no sideslip stalls, the basic airplane displayed a tendency to roll off or drop a wing. The winglets appeared to
prevent the wing tip from stalling first, thus reducing the tendency to roll-off was also exhibited in stalls with moderate
amounts of sideslip.
CONCLUDING REMARKS
Except when cruising fast at low altitude, winglets will improve airplane fuel efficiency. Airplane climb
performance is improved considerably due to winglets, and, as a result, the service ceiling of the airplane with
winglets will be higher. The maneuverability of the airplane in terms of minimum time to turn 360 degrees is upgraded
significantly.

Problem: Leaky auxiliary tank drain valves.
Old solution: Remove fuel cell and install new factory drain valve
assembly.
Cost: Labor $450.00 Parts $427.00 Total $877.00
New solution: Commander Aero redesigned the drain valve assembly
so the drain valve itself can be easily replaced.
(Intial upgrade parts cost - $275.00 per drain assembly.)
Cost after upgrade: Labor $10.00 Parts $30.00 Total $40.00
Commander Aero has implemented this solution with an FAA field

TKS DE-ICE SYSTEMS...
for twin Commanders
CAI is proud to offer TKS De-Icing systems for your twin Commander.
Porous, laser drilled titanium panels are installed on the leading edges of
the wings, and horizontal and vertical stabilizers. A slinger ring is
installed on the propeller and a spray bar is positioned on the windshield
for protection. A glycol based fluid is exuded through the panels and
flows over these surfaces keeping the aircraft virtually ice free.
The glycol based fluid is metered from a tank by a small electrically
driven pump through a micro-filter to proportioning units. The
proportioning units contain calibrated capillary tubes which apportion
fluid to the individual panels and the propeller slinger ring. The
windshield is protected with an on-demand pump and spray bar. A
significant advantage for the pilot is the simple operation of the system.
Just turn the system ON when icing is encountered and OFF when
leaving icing conditions.
Only one choice exists for the pilot while operating the ice
protection system: anti-ice or de-ice mode. In the anti-ice
mode, a protective film of glycol prevents the formation of
ice. In the de-ice mode, the glycol chemically breaks the ice
bond. A significant feature of both modes is the elimination
of run back ice.
The weight added to an aircraft as a result of the TKS ice
protection installation is minimal. The TKS system weights
approximately 40 lb without fluid (lighter than a rubber boot
system, if one was available) and approximately 100 lbs with
a full tank of fluid.
The attractive TKS system requires a minimum of
upkeep. As the system is used, it flushes out any
accumulation of debris on the panels. Glycol, the main
ingredient of the ice protection fluid, has cleaning
properties and will not harm the paint finish on the
aircraft.
There is absolutely no loss in aircraft performance as a
result of installing the TKS system, yet significant antiice and de-ice capabilities are added. Up to 3.0 hours of
continuous anti-ice protection is possible with a full tank
of ice protection fluid.

Turbo-Charging
for piston Commanders
by Merlyn
For flying over mountains it is much better
to have turbo-charged engines. After
evaluating what is available Commander
Aero recommends the Merlyn Products
turbo system.
Products
Merlyn has taken advantage of
advancements in turbo charging systems by
producing a kit that is efficient, lightweight,
and simple. And does it ever make the

modifications are needed to the airframe.
Merlyn Products Turbo System
Merlyn Products has taken the initiative to
develop a superior turbo-system for the
Twin Commander 500B, S, and U owners
that enhances performance from their
current E1A5 or E1B5 engines.
Turbo is mounted aft of the engine
The turbo-normalized system uses a
single high efficiency Garrett turbo per side
providing a full 290HP at 18,000 feet.
Airspeed is 190KTAS at 12,000 feet and
70% power. Single engine service ceiling is
14,000 feet and takeoff and climb
performance is improved. Fuel flows are
unchanged and there are no scavenge pumps
and no operating limitations. The kit
includes new exhaust, hoses, and induction
tubes. Incorporation of the STC (SA01
142SE) is available with a 250lb gross weight
increase.
Complete new exhaust is above the engine

Cabin Comfort Unit (CCU™)
Integrated pressurization/Air Conditioning System for Turbo Commanders
The CCUTM is a revolutionary integrated pressurization and air conditioning system for Turbo Commander
Aircraft. Conventional ECU pressurization systems pressurize the typical 5 psi aircraft cabin utilizing bleed air that
exceeds 100 psi and 600 degrees Fahrenheit. This wastes over 90% of the energy of the huge volume of bleed air that
is used to pressurize the cabin.
By comparison, the CCU pressurization drives a special turbocharger directly from the hot high pressure
bleed air. The compressor section of the turbocharger then pressurizes the cabin with fresh outside air. Very little
energy is wasted. The result is that the bleed air volume from the engines is reduced by two thirds. The engines run
about 15°C cooler, produce more horsepower at the same fuel flow, and contaminated bleed air does not enter the
cabin.
The special turbocharger is a Peter Schiff Aero, Inc. development featuring massive ceramic bearings, a
pressurized oil supply, and an oil pressure readout at the pilot panel for
maximum reliability. The original installed ECU does not even have a
pressurized oil supply. The turbocharger is dynamically balanced so that
it runs virtually vibrationless.
The compressor section of the turbo- charger draws in outside air
to pressurize the cabin through the floor outlets. The CCU provides
substantially larger pressurization air flow than the OEM ECU, so that full
pressurization can usually be achieved in "problem" cabins. The
pressurization air passes through a heat exchanger on its way to the cabin.
The heat exchanger is cooled by RAM air from the belly scoop in the
service access door at the rear bottom of the aircraft.
CCU Benefits for Turbo Commander
Gain 50+ HP @ the same fuel flow x 15°C ITT engine
temperature reduction
Save 21# fuel flow per hour
Increased range
No bleed air in the cabin
Better air conditioning with overhead panel outlets
Pre-cool the cabin from a 120VAC plug
Savings pay for system in as little as 1000 hours
6 months parts & labor, 2 year/500 hour parts warranty
The CCU™ Turbocharger Pressurizes
the Cabin with Fresh Outside Air
THE CCU™ FLIGHT EXPERIENCE
To realize the maximum benefit from the CCU™ System, we recommend that the same fuel flow experienced with the
original environmental system be maintained. This will result in ITT/EGT temperatures that are approximately 15°C
lower, with an increase of about 60 horsepower total. Gone are the smelly bleed air fumes from the cabin. The ITT
harness will last much longer, the engine maintenance will be reduced at hot section time, the airplane will fly faster,
and it will fly further on a tank of fuel. Your ECU maintenance bill will be much lower. The critical altitude to maintain
full engine torque will be higher.
Think of your engines without the "bleeding" penalty of the excessive bleed air volume use, just to
pressurize the cabin. That air now is part of the combustion process and provides extra cooling that will reduce your
engine maintenance bill.
