a glance
25th silver festive edition
Curators Kersten Geers and David Van Severen
of the Brussels-based architectural practice OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen have
chosen ‘SILVER LINING – INTERIORS’ as the
theme of this Biennale. Silver will be everywhere
in this edition, a nice reference to our 25th anniversary. With the subtitle ‘INTERIORS’ we want
to emphasise a return to our roots. While two
thousand objects took centre stage in their own
right in the 1990s, the focus now shifts back to
complete interiors. This is where it began for Interieur in the 1960s. You will be able to literally
dive into different rooms and atmospheres, just
as you would in a real home. To achieve this we
aim to establish collaborations between different
designers and/or architects.

returning to it now to take it to the next level.
The curators aim to enable the Kortrijk Xpo site
to remain alive even after closing time, by including installations, for example, that can be visited
day and night. Read more on p. 4–6.

2. Vision 2016
There is a photograph at the Interieur headquarters that was taken during one of the first
editions of the Biennale Interieur, almost 50 years ago. It is hard to imagine today how much
the world has changed. Design as a term was hardly used back then, and Biennale Interieur
(for creative living!) had the vision to share these wonderful new possibilities with as many
people as possible.
Today design is ubiquitous and intimately connected to our daily experiences. What was
once niche has become mainstream, and we have ready access to an inexhaustible supply
of design. What was a vision in the past has now become a reality – a cause for celebration!
But we’re not stopping there. We are at the dawn of a new world in which our ‘creative living’
represents endless new possibilities and challenges. And with this new world comes an
evolving Biennale Interieur. INTERIEUR 2016 challenges traditional forms of participation
and experiments with new ways of involvement that continue to shape Interieur’s vision. A
timeless vision: good design can give meaning and add quality to our everyday lives.

3. The curators of Interieur’s cultural programme
25e Biennale Interieur – a silver edition
It has been a tradition since 1968 – the first year that the Biennale Interieur was organised –
that a leading architect, designer or curator makes his mark on the architecture and artistic
programme of the Biennale. They know what’s ‘happening’ in the field, share their own interpretation of creative living or make a statement about contemporary design. Philippe Starck,
Gio Ponti and Verner Panton are just a few of the designers who have taken on the Interieur
masterplan or have created controversial installations. From Konstantin Grcic and Alessandro Mendini to Jaime Hayon and Junya Ishigami – the Biennale Interieur story resembles a
chapter from international design history.
2016 is a milestone in the history of the Biennale Interieur. It is our 25th edition – a cause for
celebration! To ensure that our festive edition runs smoothly we approached the architecture firm OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen. They partnered with visual artist
Richard Venlet and graphic designer Joris Kritis and together conceived the theme for
this edition, ‘SILVER LINING – INTERIORS’, and its programme. In doing this they pay
homage to the 25th silver edition of the Biennale Interieur. The subtitle ‘INTERIORS’ demonstrates the event’s potential to address the possibilities of the ‘designed space’.
The curators say: “We look at INTERIORS in the broader sense: from our everyday li-
ving rooms to high-tech environments, to art installations and complete interiors. We
want to offer a catalogue of the hypothetical world. The silver edition of the Biennale
Interieur seems like the perfect place to realise that ambition. With INTERIORS we
want to investigate and explore ‘inhabited’ space – in the form of a rich collection of
interpretations that not only focuses on objects, but strives for a complete spatial
experience.”
The architectural practice OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen knows the Kortrijk Xpo
exhibition halls better than anyone. In 2009 they drafted the masterplan for the Xpo: based
on a meticulous grid of precisely 5.7 by 5.7 metres, they constructed a new office block as
well as a modular gallery around the exhibition halls. This gallery structures and defines the
site and will be further developed as the organisational structure and framework for INTERIEUR 2016. OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van
Severen will light up the external gallery and circulation areas within the exhibition halls with a celebratory ‘SILVER LINING’ construction. Their ambition is to develop the whole of INTERIEUR 2016’s setting into a ‘city’ within the city:
an urban indoor and outdoor space where design,
art and architecture meet. They propose a strong
architectural agenda that will include various

initiatives celebrating the 25th anniversary edition: a Biennale for design in the broadest
sense that, like a city, operates both day and night.
Interiors
A selection of international guests will be invited to create solo or duo presentations.
These INTERIORS will be at the heart of the SILVER LINING edition. We look forward to seeing concise and relevant installations by designers, architects and artists with a focus on the
creation of a complete interior.
Central to INTERIORS, which will be spread over various halls, is the idea that furniture and
objects are not isolated items; they are always part of the organised space. With INTERIORS,
the curators will attempt to offer a new understanding of objects in their context instead of
the objects being consumed as autonomous trophies. We spend most of our lives in designed environments surrounded by objects, but are they sufficiently appreciated as part of
a wider whole?
Internationally renowned Swiss curator Moritz Küng brings a new interpretation of his
‘Schöner Wohnen’ project that was first presented in the art space BE-PART ten years ago.
The exhibition is named after one of the most important interior design magazines in Europe. At first glance it did not resemble an exhibition, but was more like an interior, a spatial
version of a spread from an interiors magazine. In this fictional décor, artworks were disguised as a table, chair, lamp, vases, boxes, carpets … all of this formed a Gesamtkunstwerk, a
complete interior in which masterpieces from an impressive list of international artists were
secreted.
The office of Swiss-French architect Philippe Rahm focuses on ‘meteorological design’.
He creates environments that are based on meteorological and physiological elements, and
uses light, temperature, humidity and pressure to achieve a heightened sensory involvement.
The architectural firm Johnston MarkLee and designer Jonathan Olivares – both based
in Los Angeles – will also join forces to approach the interior from a new angle. They each in
their own way shape the modern face of LA after all. With their minimalistic realisations, Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, the founders of the eponymous architecture firm, aim to unite
design and technology in a unique way. Their designs for residents, commercial building and
exhibition set designs are stripped of ornaments and unnecessary elements. Jonathan Olivares has been leading his own office for the past ten years and is specialised in industrial,
spatial and communication design. Depending on the project, he teams up with graphic designers, digital media developers, researchers, architects and filmmakers. He has worked for
brands such as Knoll, Nike and Vitra. In collaboration with the British designer Jasper Morrison, he curated the exhibition ‘Source Material’. For publisher Phaidon he wrote A Taxonomy
of Office Chairs, an internationally renowned book that visualised the history of the office
chair and was awarded a Compasso D’Oro.
Swiss architects and designers Trix & Robert Haussmann have been active for more than
40 years. In their work they seek new developments in existing applications, both in architecture and the design of objects. This often results in innovative interpretations combined with

6
humour and self-mockery. They have made over 650 creations and are often acknowledged
as the most important architects, designers and theorists of their time. The Swiss curators
STUDIOLO – Fredi Fischli & Niels Olsen interpreted their work in a publication and film.
The Solo House project by Office Kersten Geers David Van Severen will be the subject
of one of the Interior presentations. Solo Houses are a series of architectural holiday homes at a large estate in Spain. The first one, created by Chilean architects Pezo Von Ellrichshausen, was completed last year. OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen designed
the second Solo House in Spain. Their self-sufficient house integrates the various living areas in a circular layout, arranged around a large external patio with a swimming pond. The
house is built as a circular corridor, consisting of a series of consecutive rooms. Design duo
Muller Van Severen was invited to create furniture and lighting for the Spanish holiday
home. Their rocking day bed is made with a metal mesh and its transparency creates a dubious game between presence and absence. The objects are both modest and sculptural at
the same time. The house will be finished in the autumn of 2016. “Our villa will be very
transparent, just like the furniture by Fien [Muller] and Hannes [Van Severen],” says OFFICE
Kersten Geers David Van Severen. “This allows it to be in direct contact with the surrounding
nature.”
Biennale curators OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, Richard Venlet and Joris
Kritis will occupy a significant part of INTERIORS with GENERATIONS, an exhibition of
personally selected highlights of design history from 1968 to today: a curated and personal view of a half-decade of design history; a confrontation between generations – harmonious at times, but often contradictory. Including work by Rem Koolhaas & Maarten Van
Severen, Jean Nouvel, Konstantin Grcic, Jasper Morrison, Gio Ponti, Junya Ishigami,
Achille Castiglioni, Ettore Sottsass, Andrea Branzi, Studio Mumbai & Michael Anastassiades and Kazuo Shinohara.

4. Joris Kritis: graphic identity INTERIEUR 2016
Faithful to its principles, every edition of Biennale Interieur gets a new look. Graphic designer Joris Kritis (BE) is part of the curatorial team and has designed an identity that looks both
to the past and the future, that is transformative and that is above all participatory. He retains
the original contours of the Interieur logo but works with a multitude of interpretations, with
numerous references and potential combinations. Don’t just expect one version of the logo,
but look out for new transformations that are applied to various different contexts.

5. Participants of INTERIEUR 2016
Interieur 2016: adding meaning to the experience
In October 2016 the international design community will meet in Kortrijk: this is the 25th time
this has happened since 1968 – a special edition. Because Interieur’s goal is to promote
contemporary interior design, this anniversary edition will not be a nostalgic affair. On the
contrary. We resolutely continue to choose the future: the search for the finest products, the
discovery of new talent – all of this in an environment that brings out the best in the objects.
The Biennale tries to accomplish this in a mutating world. The changes in the sector put
pressure on entire revenue models. Disruption is the new normal. And not just its economic
dimension: the uncertainty that exists in our society has put a spotlight on the search for
meaning. Searching for answers in this alienating world is a responsibility shared by the
economic field, scientists and artists. It is at this intersection that Biennale Interieur is situated, with the conviction that design can make a difference, because it is about more
than merely an aesthetic emotion. Design gives meaning to things. The Biennale is a place
for encounters and experiences. But it will – and even more so in the future – have to subscribe to humankind’s tentative search for meaning – and certainty.
INTERIEUR 2016 will be a very distinctive Biennale: a place where the best contemporary
design will be shown in a compact, selective and accessible way.
INTERIEUR 2016 will be an engaging Biennale: a meeting between participants and visitors
searching for inspiration. The Biennale Interieur is a destination for companies that mean
more to us than ‘mere’ exhibitors. They are participants in a collective mission. The Biennale
Interieur is a destination for visitors who take time and care over informing themselves and
exchanging views with the participating brands.
INTERIEUR 2016 will also be an optimistic Biennale: not just a banal expression of joy but
the shared conviction that design gives meaning to products and is an added value that
makes people curious and interested.
Jo Libeer, CEO Biënnale Interieur
Selection committee 2016
Biennale Interieur is known for its excellent selection presented in a compact but comprehensive format. This tradition will continue for the 25th edition. To maintain the strong scenographic identity of the Biennale, the selection committee – Casper Vissers (NL, co-founder,
MOOOI / design business entrepreneur), Damiaan Vanhoutte (BE, Govaert & Vanhoutte Architects), Johanna Agermann Ross (SE/UK, editor-in-chief, Disegno magazine), Joost Vanhecke (BE, design expert, Biennale Interieur) and Max Borka (BE/DE, curator, author and
consultant) – was asked to make a powerful and striking selection of brands, products and
presentations.
press kit: www.interieur.be/press

This search has resulted in a clear, refreshing selection. The participating brands and products tell a story, rely on a strong identity and fit seamlessly with Biennale Interieur’s mission.
In line with its name and the theme of the 25th edition a whole range of products and applications will be displayed, all linked to contemporary living. Furniture is accompanied by a
wide range of architectural products and materials. Together the selected brands form a
representative sample of what is happening in interior design today.
Meet some of the participants
Bolon goes for a personal approach. Bolon by You, a project with London-based Doshi
Levien, gives you the opportunity to design your own customised carpet. Newcomer PJ
Mares introduces NOMAX, a durable, flexible and stylish kitchen that competes happily with
professional systems. Lighting specialist Flos is supported by a long tradition of collaboration with big names, and is showing designs by Vincent Van Duysen, Michael Anastassiades and many others.

box and gives us a modern, innovative look at their product lines. Obumex continually offers
quality products, demonstrated in this edition by their recent collaboration with Glenn Sestig, who has designed a robust signature kitchen. Axor will introduce new innovations in
their Montreux line in the presence of Phoenix Design. In addition they’re bringing along
British duo Barber & Osgerby, who will share their vision of the evolution of bathroom design during a design talk with Philippe Grohe and Jo Libeer, CEO of Interieur. Liquidfloors
will also be present, with its seamless floors – their application techniques and products can
be found in various different styles, projects and environments. Architects can indulge themselves at the Sky-Frame booth, for a maximum amount of glass and minimum amount of
window profile.
Trizo21 continues the success story of the Austere range. Architect Hans Verstuyft has designed a pendant lamp to complement his sober, striking floor and table lamps. Marina
Bautier introduces the first collection of her revitalised brand. As always, Bautier brings elegant designs with a Scandinavian or Japanese touch. You can also find this elegance in
kitchen designs by Bulthaup. Again and again this company manages to combine a timeless, sober appearance with technology and innovation. Extremis will also be there – their
famous outdoor furniture can be seen adorning many gardens. New pieces of furniture that
put the emphasis on being together are frequently added to their collection. Durlet – celebrating its 50th anniversary – has never missed an edition of Biennale Interieur since its inception in 1968. This year they introduce new products by Sylvain Willenz. Another company exhibiting for the 25th time is Bic Carpets.
The iconic Pastoe prides itself on its long history of furniture manufacturing. Today their
functional, flexible designs are available in different colours, materials and combinations.
Equally iconic is Danish brand Vola. The timeless kitchen taps by Arne Jacobsen find their
way into contemporary homes, and are complemented by various other lines and styles.

demonstrates historical knowledge, aesthetics and contemporary know-how.
Petite Friture are famous for their fun collaborations with young emerging talent. POOL,
Andreas Engesvik, Giorgia Zanellato and many others have worked on aspects of their
colourful collection. Normann Copenhagen is one of the big Scandinavian names. Their
products are characterised by quality and sustainability, with a striking twist. With Daily Fiction they have added a range of paper products and small accessories to their collection. A
series of furniture brands from Copenhagen is joining the Biennale Interieur, Normann
Copenhagen is amongst the wellknown names but also Woud, Händvark, Mater, by Lassen
and DK3 will bring a fresh touch to INTERIEUR 2016. Per/use returns with a collection from
emerging and established designers. Lucie Koldova, Caroline Voet, Studio Segers, Frederik Delbart, NOTE Studio, Lieven Musschoot & Cas Moor and many others design for
the brand.
Buzzispace, the international leader in noise-reducing interiors, introduces a new line by
designer Gerd Cockhuyt. Bulo brings high-quality office furniture. Their designs can easily
be displayed in the living room: Bram Boo, Stephan Beel and Danny Venlet are just a few
of the designers that the Belgian brand works with. They have recently relaunched the timeless SL58 chair by Léon Stynen. Italian brand Pedrali offers straightforward designs with a
twist. Their latest colourful collections demonstrate this versatility. Mattiazzi will participate
for the second time – with recent products by Sam Hecht and Konstantin Grcic they will
be bringing design by major international designers to Interieur. First time participant MA/U
Studio will bring beautifully refined Danish design to Kortrijk. Other international newcomers
to look out for are London-based Made in Ratio by Brodie Neill who will present a playful
installation, launching a highly anticipated new design alongside one of its most iconic furniture pieces. Montreal-based Lambert et Fils, who will launch their latest lighting collection
called Laurent.
The field of lighting often plays with innovation and techniques. Xal, with headquarters in
Austria, specialises in technological lighting systems. Their projects can be found in homes,
but also in shops, offices, hotels and other buildings. The minimalist, modern products by
Wever & Ducré integrate the newest LED technologies. TossB seamlessly combine highquality functional and technical aspects with design. Catellani & Smith offer a wide range of
unique lighting possibilities, from wall lights to floor lamps. NEMO presents ‘La Luce’, the
first exhibition that recreates the important work on lighting by Le Corbusier and Charlotte
Perriand. Through unpublished and historical material these two masters of architecture and
design and great innovators in the world of lighting, are being put in the spotlight. Interpoint is a new player in the field, providing minimalist contemporary interiors for traditional houses. Atelier Hausmann, with its striking contemporary metal creations and home
accessories, join us from Berlin. Also from Berlin, Jan Kath – the world-renowned brand

famous for its handcrafted rugs – will amaze the Interieur visitors with its unconventional and
surprising approach. Maison Vervloet, high-end producer of unique door fittings, will attract
attention with its new Bubbles collection by designer India Madhavi. For bathrooms there is
Dornbracht, but also Alape and newcomer Laufen. INTERIEUR 2016 is the ideal opportunity for Van Marcke to launch Mobilo. This new furniture concept, with endless modularity, by
Van Marcke Origine transcends traditional bathroom furniture and brings the living room
into the bathroom.
Belgian architectural lighting specialist Tal will offer a preview of their new products, in collaboration with furniture brand Joli: a table and chairs with matching lighting by designer Sylvain Willenz. Basalte – specialist in design products for home automation – will also
have a booth at Interieur. Their brand recently won a Red Dot Design Award for the Eve wall
mount for iPad. You will see more Belgian design with Wildspirit, a company that is steadily
making its way to the top of the international field. They will present the new Arch chair by
designer Sylvain Willenz, and Rack by Cas Moor & Lieven Musschoot. Also setting up at
the Biennale is 2TEC2, known for their high-tech woven vinyl flooring. Other Belgian eyecatchers are Serax, known for their wide range of accessible and functional tableware, accessories, lighting and small furniture. Another one to watch out for is the new Belgian design label valerie_object, who have worked together with by the celebrated designers
such as Muller Van Severen, Maarten Baas and Studio Simple to name a few.
Ceramics specialist Atelier Vierkant will make an impression – as usual – with a special installation. For INTERIEUR 2016 we can expect a monumental five-metre-high sculpture in
which clay takes a central role. Marazzi Group exhibited at Interieur in the 1970s, and returns in this edition with beautiful collections of ceramic and porcelain tiles. For the second
time Odilon Creations brings unique materials and techniques for walls and floors, with a
booth designed by the Belgian agency Five AM. We can also look forward to ‘Kasteel
Bokrijk’ or Bokrijk Castle – architect Bart Lens is working on a customised contemporary
castle interior, in collaboration with nine designers.
Unique exhibition design
As always, exhibition design also gets some well-deserved attention. Biennale Interieur aims
to show inspiring, original booth designs that go beyond a catalogue image. We selected our
participants with this aim in mind, and continually work with them to achieve this. In addition,
Interieur proactively approached a selection of designers and architects and challenged
them to create unique and inspiring installations in collaboration with a brand. Michael
Young – guest of honour during the 2002 Biennale – will, for example, test the boundaries
of gravity with natural stone specialist Van Den Weghe. The latter will bring along designs by
Muller Van Severen, Glenn Sestig and others. Studio Dessuant Bone, a young FrenchBritish duo, joins forces with Allaert Aluminium. Using the OTIIMA system they will develop
a series of interactive sculptures and installations. Kvadrat team up with renowned Shanghai-based design duo Neri & Hu, who work with them on presenting their iconic fabrics. Luce di Carrara brings wonderful Italian marble in the form of work by Lorenzo Damiani, a designer known to surprise. Nedda El-Asmar, Belgian Designer of the Year 2007, will

make an inspirational Magnitude® installation with LS Bedding, surprising visitors with two
contrasting set-ups where fairy tales come true and princesses feel at home. Michael Verheyden makes his mark on the Hullebusch installation. LoT architecture, based in New
York and Greece, will create an eye-catching stand for sister companies ArgentAlu and
Renson.
At INTERIEUR 2016 Designregio Kortrijk presents the results of the co-creation project
5X5 for the fifth time. For this project five regional companies are coupled with five senior
and five junior designers for a year. Together they develop a new product or service. Designregio Kortrijk manages the project and supports the entire process from concept to final
product. The participating companies and senior designers are: Viva Sara x Studio Nedda
El-Asmar, Elaste x TEN The Engineering Network, Depro Profiles x Danny Venlet, Vanhalst x Cides, Vincent Sheppard x Alain Gilles.
Finally, this edition of Interieur sees the launch of The Floor is Yours (see 6.1.3), a new concept that gives space to avant-garde design. The participating designers, brands and
projects take a central position in Hall 1 and 3 of Kortrijk Xpo. As an advocate for innovation
Interieur considers it part of its mission to provide a stage for the entire spectrum of design.

6. Highlights of KORTRIJK XPO : Main Stage
The curators of the ‘SILVER LINING’ edition consider Kortrijk Xpo as its main stage, the
home of Biennale Interieur. The ‘SILVER LINING’ set design and ‘INTERIORS’ by renowned
international guests, but also the avant-garde installations, get a prominent spot in the halls.
Additionally we want to keep the Kortrijk Xpo site alive after its normal closing time. ‘The Circus’, the retail summit, temporary events and a ‘Bar Basso’ aperitif bar will all be part of the
after-hours programme.
6.1. Avant-garde in Kortrijk Xpo
6.1.1. Interieur Awards - Spaces Category
Biennale Interieur chooses strong content to surprise its visitors – and the Interieur Awards
play an important part here. Interieur is very happy to note that there were many high-quality
projects in the 80 entries that were submitted from 20 countries. Five concepts for a bar/
restaurant were selected and will be realised at INTERIEUR 2016.
The Interieur Awards have been a part of Biennale Interieur since 1970. This competition for
new Objects and Spaces is an important stepping-stone for designers. For the second
edition of this format for the Interieur Award Spaces Category, the focus is on a bar/restaurant design with a clear connection between the design and the food concepts.
The five winning concepts that will be realised at
INTERIEUR 2016:
x Terra, a concept by Carolien Pasmans, Bram Aerts and
Claudio Saccucci of TRANS Architectuur en Stedenbouw
in Ghent (Belgium)
The Terra project enchanted the jury members with a minimalist concept for a bar made with concrete blocks and a variety of mushrooms
growing in a centrally placed ‘field’, symbolising our coming together
around nature and food. Chef Andrea Lazazzera’s menu features dishes with mushrooms and traditional blond beer.
x Le Banquet Gaulois, a concept by Matteo Ghidoni from
Milan (Italy) and Jean-Benoît Vétillard from Paris (France)
Le Banquet Gaulois presents a collective meal with a ritual character.
The design features freestanding, colourful kitchen elements. A round
seating element forms a barrier between the kitchen and guests at the
Banquet.
press kit: www.interieur.be/press
14
x We are family, a concept by Pauline Deltour, Anne-Laure Gautier and Gwenaëlle Girard of En Bande Organisée
from Paris (France)
In contrast with Le Banquet Gaulois’ colourful project, the jury also
elected the black concept We Are Family, a reference to the coal
mines in northern France. It emphasises social values such as living
together and sharing. On two large tables with benches for 50 people,
a basic lunch will be served in the traditional briquet, a lunchbox-avantla-lettre for miners.
x Bar Nose, a concept by Mayu Takasugi from Tokyo
(Japan) and Johannes Berry from South Africa (RSA)
Bar Nose is among the winning projects with an oblong minimalist
concept inspired by the traditional Japanese Kōdō ritual. The Japanese
team describes it as ‘a place of sensory rest’ where the experience of
aromas will be among the main components.
x Made/Found a concept by Jon Kleinhample and Maša
Lončarič Kleinhample of Klein Agency in Antwerp (Belgium)
Finally, Made/Found captivated the jury with a strong concept around
the contrast between ‘found’ and ‘man-made’ design and food. A series of old and forgotten tree stumps are confronted with ‘digital wood’.
The concept continues in the kitchen, with made/found contrasts
based on simple ingredients such as corn and potatoes.

6.1.2. Interieur Awards - Objects Category
More international than ever
The Biennale Interieur received 157 entries from 29 countries for the Objects Category of
the Interieur Awards. In addition to a large number of entries from European countries, designers from the US, Japan and South Korea were also well represented. Designers from all
corners of the globe such as Mauritius, New Zealand and Syria also competed for places.
Grand Prize winner: Dimitri Bähler (CH) - Volumes, Patterns, Textures and Colors
De Grand Prize winner receives € 2,500 and will be put in the spotlight at the Interieur
Awards exhibition at INTERIEUR 2016.
The jury unanimously chose the design ‘Volumes, Patterns, Textures and Colors’ by Swiss
designer Dimitri Bähler (1988). The jury honoured his strong presentation that focused on
research into materiality and tactility. Bähler surprised the jury with a subtle interaction between pared-down objects and lively patterns, a clever colour palette and innovative coatings.
“The result of my research is a collection of objects that plays with different variations of volumes, patterns, textures and colors, a kind of dictionary. Always close to
an essential abstraction, these shapes can be used as pedestals, fruits bowls, vase,
pencils / fruits holders,... Together, they create a dialogue between functionality and
non-functionality, minimalism and decoration, questioning the concept of usefulness
in our homes.” Dimitri Bähler
After studying at Écal in Lausanne and the Design Academy in Eindhoven, Dimitri Bähler
founded his own design studio in Bern in 2014. As a finalist in the 2013 Design Parade in
Hyères (France) and nominee for the 2014 and 2015 Swiss Design Awards, he was frequently invited to international residencies and workshops, such as Rethink the Modular for USM
AG & Domaine. At the moment Bähler works for Swiss and international labels such as HAY,
USM, Dadadum, Hors Pistes, Marlo&Isaure, for galleries Nov and Kissthedesign and for both
public and private clients.

Workshop August 2016
The summer workshop for the winners of the Objects Category of the Interieur Awards took
place from August 7th to 12th at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Grand-Hornu near
Mons in Belgium. The neoclassical Grand-Hornu site - a former coal industry icon - is the
home of both the contemporary art museum MAC’s and the centre for innovation and design CID. During the Interieur Awards summer workshop, the winners have created the setting and scenography for the Interieur Awards exhibition called ‘CLICK!’ at the 25th Biennale,
from October 14th until 23rd in Kortrijk, Belgium. German designer Jörg Mennickheim was
the workshop leader. CLICK! exhibition at INTERIEUR 2016
‘Click’ introduces a new way to experience products between the physical object and its
digital image, inspired by an infinity wall each object is framed within the exhibition space.
The scenography’s architecture allows an object to be captured perfectly on its own, or
zooming out one can view the entire collection of winners. Visitors are invited to capture
each object and share online to archive both the exhibition and the objects themselves,
generating a digital memory of the Interieur Awards 2016.

6.1.3. The Floor is Yours
Young talent and new labels the heart of Kortrijk Xpo
For its 25th edition, Biennale Interieur and its curators decided to devote more than
2000 square metres at the heart of Kortrijk Xpo to new talent and designer-driven labels.
This is the Biennale’s way of responding to the major changes that have been taking place in
the design industry and economy during the last decade. In many cases, objects are directly
produced and sold by the producers and designers. Interieur continues to strengthen its
role as a catalyst and platform for new developments.
Within the plan by curators OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, space has been provided in Hall 1 and 3 for the presentation of furniture, objects, accessories and ideas for living.
‘The Floor is Yours’ is a very clear answer to the open call organised by Biennale Interieur:
new talent and designer-driven labels claim their own space, with a focus on unique installations that go beyond the mere presentation of products. Inspiration was taken from the
‘SILVER LINING – INTERIORS’ theme by curators OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen,
which strives for the creation of complete spatial experiences that go beyond straigthforward product presentations. Collaborations by multiple designers are encouraged to create
interesting settings.
It’s a simple, flexible and accessible idea: pick a shape – a square, triangle or parallelogram
– and decide on a size from 1 to 99m2 for a unique freestanding installation.
FIrst look: London-based Custhom’s creations are graphically-inspired products ranging
from wallpaper to ceramics. Everything is directly available online, straight from the studio
to the customer.
Sharing is rewarding: Solo Studio collaborates with GENERIEK architects on the ‘Q Room’, offering a spatial experience revolving around how objects relate to their context
and vice versa.
A strong German presence can be expected within the Floor is Yours: 8 Berlin-based designers group their efforts under impulse of IDZ, tackling the peculiarities of a typical
Berliner Zimmer. More info on IDZ in ‘Press releases by Participants’ at www.interieur.be/press

The Wall, Nieuwe German Gestaltung #004
Highlight of The Floor is Yours, platform for young talent and new labels, which will take
place in Hall 1 of Kortrijk Xpo.
The Wall, Nieuwe German Gestaltung #004, an exhibition curated by Max Borka - the
Berlin- and Brussels-based Belgian design critic, curator and director of STATE OF DESIGN,
BERLIN - will unite innovative and experimental work by German-born and German-based
designers, design studios and creatives.
Borka, who is a former Biennale Interieur director, has selected projects on their critical mass
and social relevance, questioning if today’s design can be more than just another brick in the
wall.
In a scenography by German designer, architect and galerist Yasmine Benhadj-Djilali, more
than 50 selected participants will be united in an architectural wall-like setting.

6.2. Kortrijk Xpo after-hours
De curators of INTERIEUR 2016 have the ambition to bring the site of Kortrijk Xpo to life after the typical closing hours. Installations such as The Circus, temporary events and an custom created apero bar will be part of the after-hours programme.
6.2.1. Design Retail Summit
What does the future hold for design retailers? What are the changes in the retail landscape, and how can the behaviour of tomorrow’s design consumers be anticipated?
On Monday evening October 17th, Biennale Interieur organises a summit on the future of
design retail. In addition to providing a view onto the future, the summit aims to be a meeting place, aimed in the first instance at design retailers, who traditionally visit the Biennale
on Monday.
Confirmed speakers:
x Jo Caudron (BE) - Duval Union Consulting Jo Caudron is Managing Partner at Duval Union Consulting, where he helps companies with
strategic approaches in a period of digital transformation and fast-evolving consumer behaviour. Caudron is co-writer of Digital Transformation and is a sought-after guest lecturer
and speaker.
Topic: Digital Transformation
x Tobias Lutz - Architonic.com

6.2.2. Focus on experience at ’The Circus’
For a wow! moment at INTERIEUR 2016 you should visit ‘The Circus’, a concept by creative
agency King George, who are setting up camp next to Hall 3 of Kortrijk Xpo. You’ll arrive in a
world revolving around the circus, with (to name just a few) a ‘grand chapiteau’ tent with a
blue starry ceiling, circus lighting, podium, circus bar and a real ringmaster who runs the
whole thing smoothly. The ten participating brands – such as Quick-Step, Cosentino and
Blum – will present their products in a conceptual way in containers surrounding the tent.
‘The Circus’ is a design theatre for good taste that will serve as a showcase for the participating brands during the day. Visitors can explore the ten containers installed there and can
have a drink – and popcorn! – in the circus bar at the centre of the arena. Every day the
‘Circus Forum’ will host lectures by trend watchers, designers, design CEOs and connoisseurs. The lecture programme is supported by the newspaper De Morgen, the official media
partner of INTERIEUR 2016. And at night? That’s when the circus really gets going with a
spectacular evening show. Every participating brand can invite customers, prospects and
contacts for ‘The Circus Show’: a B2B event with showstoppers and performances by
trapeze artists, clowns and magicians. Let the show begin!

6.2.3. DAMN° à la Milanese - Bar Basso Interieur
If Muhammad won’t go to the mountain, the mountain must go to Muhammad.
During Interieur, DAMN° will audaciously position the entire Bar Basso in the vicinity of your
thirsty tastebuds. Fun times are guaranteed: we are re-enacting the entire multisensory travelling theatre in Kortrijk. It’s a personal experience you won’t want to miss: starting with the
fruity Fragolino, switching to the original Negroni Sbagliato and onto the killing-you-softly
Cardinale. And, of course, there can be no Bar Basso without Shaking Maurizio, Miss Downpayment, the crowd, and the majestic Sound of Music décor. Everything is entirely based on
a true story…

7. Texture site: beating heart of Interieur in the city
For its city programme, Biennale Interieur has elected the Texture site at the North Bridge: a
renovated neighbourhood in Kortrijk that has all the assets to offer both international and
local visitors an inspiring and surprising journey. The site around the North Bridge comprises firstly the Texture Museum building itself, this
stunning architectural renovation in 2014 by Brussels-based noAarchitecten is a landmark
alongside the river Lys and will be the main hub of the city programme. The neighbouring
industrial warehouse ‘Vlaskaai’ will be a second spot at the Texture site to welcome visitors.
Textile, the core of Texture
At the Texture Museum, visitors will be able to discover the story of the linen and flax industry in and around Kortrijk – a prime example of craftsmanship and enterprise, of daring innovation and flexibility. Textile is a material that references both history and authenticity, but
it is also a high-tech industry, with countless applications in our daily lives and environment.
Highlights Texture Site:
With ‘textile’ being the key topic for the 25th edition, nobody was better placed than world
renowned trend forecaster Li Edelkoort to curate WILD THINGS, the main exhibition of the
Biennale Interieur city programme.
WILD THINGS - Lidewij Edelkoort & Philip Fimmano
"The design discipline is digging deep into its history, excavating fragments of ancient civilizations, and recording indigenous ways of making, researching and innovating rarefied
production processes, searching for the instinctive in human nature,“ says Li Edelkoort.
WILD THINGS is an exhibition curated by Lidewij Edelkoort (NL) and Philip Fimmano (AU),
which will take place in the Treasury Room at Texture. This contemporary design selection
will investigate how objects of the future seek to incorporate an energy or life force, defining
a new era of design with soul.

Vlaskaai
The industrial building Vlaskaai is the home for research and experimentation during INTERIEUR 2016, where a series of interventions will take place.
2 Dutch (TUDelft & KABK Den Haag) and 3 Belgian (KU Leuven, UHasselt and UAntwerpen)
architecture schools join their forces and bring a performative installation
entitled ‘Schoonheid, Schaarste en Gemeenschap’, which translates as ‘Beauty, Scarcity and
Community’.
The same 3 Belgian universities add further the discussion “What is the Future of Interiors
Education” to the programme, without the need for consensus but with a machine thats allows visitors to look at the system of relationships between digital and physical, interior and
exterior, commercial and theoretical.
Further Vlaskaai highlights include:
Villa Noailles - the hotspot for fashion, art and design in Hyères in Southeastern France brings the work of the Grand Prize winner of the 10th Design Parade: designer Samy Rio.
The Maarten Van Severen foundation is present with the results of its first chair, together
with designer Erwan Bouroullec.
Finally, Biennale Interieur will construct the Juice Bar, a concept that got a honorable mention at the Interieur Awards 2016, and proves its dedication to promote stunning bar designs. The Juice Bar will serve fresh juices and will also serve the best Belgian Beers from
Omer Vander Ghinste in a relaxing setting with good vibes. Special thanks to Ferm Living,
Poitier Stone and Beltrami.
Club Design
For the 25th edition of the Biennale, creative agency DIFT will host an innovative concept:

8.3. Educational company visits – Voka West Flanders
Much of what is exhibited at the Biennale is developed and built by family manufacturing
businesses in West Flanders. Manufacturing industry is still very prominent in the region, due
to its entrepreneurship and resilience and the courage to transform and innovate. Voka West
Flanders developed a programme for students in which a school visit to Biennale Interieur is
preceded by an educational company visit in the region. With these visits Voka aims to highlight the manufacturing industry in the area and to give students insight into what leads to
the product presentations they will see at Interieur. From Tuesday 18 to Friday 21 October
students can discover the design and production processes of a broad spectrum of interior
and architectural objects in nineteen West Flemish manufacturing companies.
Students can thus discover product design both at the Biennale Interieur and on site in the
workplaces of local manufacturing industries.

As with previous editions, this year’s Biennale Interieur will yet again team up with transport
specialist Scelta Mobility to make sure that all its locations are easily accessible. Scelta will
ensure that the transport to, from and within Kortrijk runs smoothly, with an array of transport
options (train, bus, shuttle) and with service points at airports and in Kortrijk train station.
In the city of Kortrijk, Scelta Mobility and Biennale Interieur will organise a shuttle bus service between Kortrijk station, Kortrijk Xpo and the Texture Museum, which will run every
half hour from 10am to 11pm.
Marcel Kint will provide bicycle stations at both Kortrijk Xpo and the city hub at the Texture

12. ABOUT BIENNALE INTERIEUR
The Biennale Interieur npo is a non-profit organisation acting in the field of design, product
development and innovation. In 1967, the founding members of the Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk were intrigued by the impossible. One of their aims was to put contemporary interior
design and innovations on display for a broad general public – not just for professionals, as
was the case with most other fairs. They dreamed of creating a space and an atmosphere
that didn’t surrender to the laws of traditional layout and set design.
The originality of the concept and its expanding international reach, turnover, number of visitors, exhibitors and world-renowned design brands and press coverage show that there was
a true need for an innovative model for design as both a cultural and commercial entity.
Unlike other trade fair organisers, the Biennale Interieur immediately adopted the status of a
non-profit institution. Much investment was made in inspirational cultural projects: a central
guest of honour, the Interieur Awards, debates and lectures. Among the guests of honour
and curators were world-famous design personalities including:
