2008-09
SEATTLE, Wash. ( January 23, 2008)--Snow skiing as a utility has been around
since the Stone Age. The first Telemark skis with a heel strap made with birch tendrils
appeared around 1850 giving skiers freedom to turn, climb and jump with some semblance of control. Not much changed in the Telemark world for more than 140 years.
In fact, the last 10 years have eclipsed the previous 140 years in terms of innovation.
K2 proudly contributed to the performance of the sport by introducing shaped skis,
women’s models, twin tips, inserts and most recently “rocker” to the telemark world.
The 2008-09 K2 Telemark/Alpine Touring Collection features numerous models for
men and women skiers designed to fit their riding styles and terrain preferences. The
categories for 2008-09 include:
Big Mountain Freeride skis designed for accessing and powering down steep sidecountry slopes via helicopters, skins and backcountry gates at resorts. New for 08/09: The
SODO, an edgy, stiff and powerful ski that cuts over and through the toughest terrain
from the Alps to Alaska.
Telemark skis made for lapping and making turns inbounds and out of bounds. Highlights for 08/09: Rocker design built into the shovel of the Anti Piste that increases
performance in powder. Newly designed graphics for the women’s line in collaboration
with the Tele9 Alliance team.
Alpine Touring skis built with lighter weight construction for longer distances and
multiple day trips in the backcountry. Notable for 08/09: The Mt. Baker Superlight for
ski tourers who demand top performance with minimal weight. The Miss Baker with
women’s-specific construction for touring in deep or heavy conditions.
K2’s 2008-09 Big Mountain Freeride, Telemark and Alpine Touring collection offers
the widest range of products for hard charging resort skiers to mountaineers who use
their skis as tools in the world’s harshest alpine conditions. The following press kit
includes information on all the latest products and technologies to inspire your winter
editorial assignments. Please take a look when you’re developing your stories and call us
for more information, photos and product samples.

WELCOME TO THE HOOD:
K2 Introduces SODO and Coomba in New Big Mountain Collection
SEATTLE, Wash. ( January 23, 2008) -- No mountain is too big or too steep for the
growing breed of skiers bent on conquering the world’s most challenging mountainous
terrain. K2’s new Big Mountain Freeride ski collection is designed for Telemark or Alpine Touring skiers searching for the biggest, baddest set of planks to ride backcountry
terrain rarely seen by the outside world.
The all-new SODO ski is cut from the same vein as K2’s new headquarters neighborhood in Seattle, Washington, an industrial area on the edge of high society. The SODO
is edgy, aggressive and street savvy. It’s intentionally designed as the heaviest and stiffest
ski in the line at 2,130g (179 cm) giving it the necessary brawn to straight-line out-ofbounds chutes and blast through cut-up crud at the resort. Twin tips allow tele skiers or
tourers to ride switch or throw a discouraging smokescreen when racing for first tracks.
The tail of the SODO is notched to keep skins in place when inbound stashes are overly
tracked. Suggested retail: $625 (USD).

The K2 Coomba is a dream ski for
chutes and backcountry bowls on deep
powder days. The Coomba pays tribute
to K2 athlete Doug Coombs, a two-time
World Extreme Skiing Champion, pioneer
of heli skiing in Alaska’s Chugach Mountain
Range, an internationally certified mountain
guide and arguably the best steep skier in the world. The K2 Coomba celebrates
Doug’s life and pursues the direction he took the sport. Doug worked extensively
on the Coomba design f rom concept to near-fruition over a two-year period
prior to his untimely death while attempting a mountain rescue in 2006. The
Coomba is the first pro-model for Coombs and is the ski industry’s first posthumous pro model.
The Coomba is all Doug f rom tip to tail. The ski features a powder tip shape
designed by Coombs that is super forgiving and predictable in variable snow
conditions with a progressive sidecut for turning ease and power on hard
snow. Serious tourers, aspiring backcountry and heli skiers will appreciate the
Coomba’s balanced flex pattern and generous 102mm waist width for excellent
flotation and easy handling in difficult conditions. Suggested retail: $800 (USD).

K2 Tele9 Alliance Designs
Women’s Telemark Collection
SEATTLE, Wash. ( January 23, 2008) – As they say, it takes one to know one. And since
the beginning, K2 Telemark has actively incorporated this belief into the development and
design of their women’s product. K2 Telemark depends on the five accomplished women
telemark skiers also known as the Tele9 Alliance to steer the design and performance of
all of K2’s women specific telemark and AT skis. This 5-member Alliance team represents
a variety of ages, backgrounds; regions and riding styles, and contributes to all facets of ski
development from the shape and construction to graphics, and marketing programs.
Tele9 Alliance Team 2008-09:
Heather Paul: Former U.S. Telemark National Team member, two-time national champion,
owner of Ultimate Groove--women’s telemark clinics held around the country each winter.
Lives in Crested Butte, Colorado with her two kids and husband.
Kim Jacobs: Owner of Mountain Spirits--an adventure travel company that escorts people
heli-skiing, mountaineering, and climbing around the world. Lives in Hailey, Idaho with
her husband.
Lisa Watson: A professional athlete who works for the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, skis
in the winter and bikes in the summer. Resides in Jackson, Wyoming.
Regina Ciarfella: A tele bum in the winter and an artist in her down time. Currently lives
in Salt Lake City, Utah and spends her summers in Hood River, Oregon.
Claudia Hattrup: A personal trainer and ex-pro mountain biker. Resides in Sun Valley,
Idaho with her two kids and husband.
The Tele9 Alliance worked in collaboration with K2’s designer to transform the graphics of the Dawn Patrol and the Schi Devil for 2008. The Dawn Patrol has ample width
(124/88/111cm) and stability to give tele skiers complete confidence in the powder and
crud. The powder tip offers excellent stability in the soft snow while the progressive sidecut
draws the skier into the turn, but releases at the tail guaranteeing adaptability in different
terrain. This versatile soft snow ski won’t hold you back when you’re up early working for
turns or cycling laps at the resort.

K2 Telemark Skis
Conquer In-bound Terrain
SEATTLE, Wash. ( January 23, 2008) – Telemark skiers who in the past were prone to hiding
out in the backcountry have slowly infiltrated
the world’s top resorts and peacefully integrated
into the industrialized winter sports world.
Today tele skiers, no longer an esoteric sect, are
regularly seen riding chairlifts and sharing terrain inbounds with alpine skiers and snowboarders.
K2 Telemark proudly takes credit for helping
transition tele skiers into these terrain environments by providing advanced ski designs and
professional on-snow counseling to the new
generation. Each of the models in the 2008-09
ski collection is tailored to excel in specific snow
conditions and deliver optimum performance for
all levels and types of tele skiers.
WORLD PISTE
Anti PIste

The ski’s design greatly improves both ease and
