Bakgrunn for oppretting av stilling i kontekstuell teologi og global
kristendom
Masterutdanning i interkontekstuell teologi ble opprettet ved det teologiske fakultet i 1997.
Utgangspunktet var at fakultetet i 1995 hadde etablert et nettverk av samarbeidende institusjoner
(INATE) som omfattet Det praktisk teologiske seminar, Diakonhjemmets Høgskole og
internasjonalt med teologiske fakultet ved ulike universiteter eller teologiske høgskoler i
Pietermaritzburg (Sør-Afrika), Sao Leopoldo (Brasil), Budapest (Ungarn), Hong Kong (Kina) og
Gurukul (India). Senere kom Costa Rica og Toronto til. Disse institusjonene hadde en mastergrad
der studieopphold ved søsterinstitusjon kunne inngå i graden.
Det økonomiske grunnlaget var betydelig støtte fra Kirkens Nødhjelp og Den nordisk kristne
buddhistmisjon (fra 2000 Aeropagos), noe som både gjorde det mulig å gi støtte til reise og
opphold for studenter og lærerutveksling, og lønnet (1/2) stilling for koordinator, de første årene
i Oslo, med Sturla Stålsett. LWF har vist interesse for utvekslingsprogrammet, men fant ikke
mulighet til å støtte det økonomisk.
Nettverkets visjon var å arbeide for en teologisk utdanning som tar opp utfordringene fra den
såkalte kontekstuelle teologien på den ene siden, og fra globaliseringen på den annen.
For å betjene dette samarbeidet opprettet TF i 1997 en master i ”Contextual Theology”, senere
omdøpt til ”Intercontexdual Theology”, fordi det var nødvendig at studietilbudene for
utvekslingsstudentene kunne inngå i mastergraden ved hjemme-institusjonen. Den tematiske
sammenhengen med INATE-nettverket kom til uttrykk gjennom oppbyggingen av graden:
Det var basiskurs første året, der interkontekstuell metode og temaer presenteres, dernest arbeid
med
a)bibelske tekster forstått i sin opprinnelige religiøse, politiske og kulturelle kontekst og i samtidig
fortolkning, med hovedvekt på resepsjonen i Afrika og Latin-Amerika (frigjøringsteologi,
feministisk teologi);
b) teologisk forståelse og bearbeiding av smerte, sårbarhet, sykdom og lidelse i sør og nord;
c) ulike emner som interreligiøse relasjoner, kirke og samfunn, religion, fred og konflikt,
gammeltestamentlig teologi, afrikansk feministisk teolog, kjønn og ritualer.
Annet år består av å skrive master thesis under veiledning, støttet av kurs i metode og
vitenskapelig arbeidsmåte.

Rekrutteringsbasis for Mastergraden var ved siden av utvekslingsstudenter gjennom INATE, i
hovedsak ordningen med kvotestudenter, de aller fleste fra land i Afrika. Imidlertid er dette en
knapp ressurs, som oftest med maks 3-4 studenter hvert år.
Undervisningsressursene kom fra Teologisk fakultet og samarbeidspartnerne i Oslo, praktiskteologisk seminar og Diakonhjemmets høgskole. Noen kurs var spesielt laget for programmet,
andre inngikk i et samarbeid med andre program (for eksempel Det gamle testamente). Sturla
Stålsett hadde en sentral rolle, med deltid som INATE koordinator og i en annen del som ansatt
på fakultetet. Flere av lærerne knyttet seg til programmet, både som kursholdere og som veiledere
til mastergraden, pluss med tiltak av sosial art, deriblant Halvor Moxnes, Berge Furre, Hans
Stifoss-Hanssen fra PTS, Notto Thelle, og etter hvert Kjetil Hafstad, Jone Salomonsen,
Oddbjørn Leirvik, Trygve Wyller og Aud Tønnessen. Sosialantropologen Sidsel Roalkvam var
professor II ved TF 2004-2009. I perioden 2007-2009 var hun ansatt i et to-årig vikariat. I tillegg
til å være forsker på alle våre tre forskningsprosjekter sammen med Kwa-Zulu Natal, har hun

særlig bidratt til å styrke undervisningen i etnografisk og kvalitativ metode. Både Salomonsens og
Roalkvams brede metodekompetanse har gjort det forsvarlig å oppfordre studentene til
å ”Conduct field studies in their native countries in relation to their master thesis”, slik det står på
CONTs hjemmeside.
Fakultetet var ved opprettelsen klar over at det var en krevende oppgave: en kontingent av
utenlandsstudenter hadde vi ikke erfaring med, og med usikkerhet om vi maktet å gi tilstrekkelig
av sosialt miljø omkring studiet. Ildsjelene i prosjektet lovte å legge bredsiden til, også på det
sosiale området. Et sentralt ledd i å brygge et sosialt-faglig miljø var Isegran seminarene hvert
semester, med Kjetil Hafstad som initiativtaker og drivkraft.
Etter ca ti års innsats valgte fakultetet å utvide programmet med en PhD-utdanning, for at alle
mastergrader ved fakultetet skulle kunne videreføres til PhD. Den første PhD i kontekstuell
teologi ble avlagt i 2008, inntil 2013 er det avlagt i alt 4 PhD-grader.
Profilen på faget var og er forblitt kritisk og konstruktiv kontekstuell teologi, inspirert av
frigjøringsteologi og feministteologi og kontekstuell bibellesning. Metodisk har TF utviklet faget
til også å omfatte en vesentlig del av kritisk teori (inklusive historisk kritikk, postkologial tenkning
– og kritikk av denne, og bl.a. kirkekritisk ekklesiologi) – som en videreutvikling av i kontekstuell
metode. Faget har konsentrert seg om samtidstolkning av kristendom, men har som sådant vært
åpent for teologiens ulike disipliner. Normalt inngår et par måneders ”feltarbeid” hjemme i
senderlandet (for blant annet å oppnå 12 måneders finansiering av studiet). PhDstudentene
bruker 1 år i hjemlandet. Dette gir gode muligheter for sammenlignende studier.
Fakultetet sier i sin Prosess Faglig prioritering 2012 om betydningen av programmet for
fakultetets forskning: «Gjennom målbevisst arbeid gjennom over 10 år er programmet støttet av
et etablert og robust internasjonalt nettverk. Fakultetet har i to treårsperioder også hatt og har
ennå i kommende tre år forskningssamarbeid med en av samarbeidsinstitusjonene (Universitetet i
KwaZulu Natal, Sør-Afrika), og dette har intensivert samhandlingen i nettverket. Programmet har
gjennom sin teologiske profil god tilknytning til flere av fakultetets forskningsmessige
prioriteringer. Det har også bidratt til å styrke fakultetets internasjonale/globale orientering og
slik vært med på å fornye den teologiske forskningen og det internasjonale forskningssamarbeidet
ved TF.»
Nedenfor vedlegges (vedlegg 2) en liste over hvilke mastergrader og PhDgrader som er avlagt fra
2004-2013 (dessverre har vi ikke fått med de første 8 årenes virksomhet i oversikten). Fra
administrasjonen inngår (vedlegg 3) en liten oversikt over hvilke kurs som har vært tilbudt under
programmet. Det klippes også inn noen av de sentrale profileringsuttrykk som TFs hjemmeside
gir om faget (vedlegg 1).
Siden 1996 har store forandringer skjedd når det gjelder rekruttering. De første årene var det flere
utvekslingsstudenter gjennom INATE-nettverket, med en nokså sammensatt studentgruppe,
både fra Østen og fra Latin-Amerika, med innslag fra Ungarn og USA og Canada. Etter noen år
der TF hadde ledelsen av INATE, ble ledelsen fra 2001 overført til Sør-Afrika og senere til
Canada, og det svekket rekrutteringen til/fra Norge. Dessverre begynte de finansierende
institusjonene, Kirkens Nødhjelp og Aeropagos å trekke seg ut, likeså Diakonhjemmet på
undervisningssiden. Dette førte til at det nå, bortsett fra utveksling med Kwazulu-Natal, er
kvotestipendene som har tatt over som finansieringskilde. Det har medført at studentene fra Sør
kommer i større grad fra Afrika, og vi har hatt studenter i stort tall fra Sør-Afrika, Tanzania og
Ghana, men også noen fra Kenya, Malawi, Etiopia, Zimbabwe og Sierra Leone. Det har utviklet
seg et godt samarbeid, også forskningsmessig med Sør-Afrika og det er utviklet samvirke med
utdanningsinstitusjoner i Kenya og Tanzania. I 2013 hadde programmet 3 PhD studenter og 12
masterstudenter.

På lærersiden har TF for lengst lagt arbeidet innen dette programmet til de normale
vitenskapelige stillingene. Særlig sentralt har Halvor Moxnes, Jona Salomonsen og Kjetil Hafstad
stått. De såkalte ”Isegran-seminarene” har i de siste årene i hver termin vært et faglig og sosial
samlingspunkt, der førsteårs, andreårs og PhDstudentene har vært sammen over to dager og
arbeidet med prosjektutvikling og forelesninger – og ikke minst felles matlaging, noe som har
skapt et godt sosialt ”lim” i gruppen. Seminarene har bidratt til gode kommunikasjonsforhold
med lærene.
Dette kan ikke videreføres på samme måten: Halvor Moxnes slutter våren 2014, og Kjetil
Hafstad trolig i løpet av 2016. Det er behov for én i staben som kan ha et hovedansvar for dette
programmet – og medvirke til fakultetets øvrige programmer likeså. Forslaget til betenkning gir
uttrykk for nærliggende kompetansekrav for en slik stilling, i lys av den erfaring vi har hatt siden
1996.

This Master program seeks to integrate the insights of Contextual Theology and those of Interreligious
Studies under the heading of ”intercontextual” theology.
The first year is concentrated on courses and seminars. The students are expected to participate with oral
and written presentations. The second year is focused on writing a Master thesis.
The compulsory courses will introduce you to main perspectives in contextual theologies, liberation and
feminist theologies, interreligious dialogue and postcolonial and globalization studies with an emphasis on
methods and issues.
The optional courses will introduce you to:

Central Biblical texts in the religious, cultural and
political contexts of the Gospels, as well as in the contexts of modern
readers, especially in Africa and Latin-America.

The understanding of pain, illness and suffering, both in
the first and the third world contexts.

Subjects like Interreligious Relations, Church and Society,
Religion - Peace and Conflict and Old Testament Theology.
The optional courses offered will alternate from semester to semester.
The objective is to provide the students with a thorough knowledge of theories and methods related to
intercontextual theology and to apply this to all theological disciplines.
Your work on the master thesis will introduce you to scholarly methods and the process of structuring an
academic thesis. Your choice of subject will be made under guidance of a supervisor appointed by the
Faculty. You will receive further guidance throughout the whole writing process.
The first year of the programme consist of courses and seminars, 60 credits (ECTS), of which 20 credits
are compulsory. Second year students are expected to work on their master thesis, 60 credits.

Conduct field studies in their native countries in relation to their master thesis.

Participate in student exchange programs with institutions and study programs abroad with a
similar orientation and level

Direct participation of lecturers from institutions abroad will also be actively pursued.
Career prospects
The program prepares for international pastoral ministry, teaching, social or diaconal work, and for further
studies and research.
