BUNCO What is BUNCO? Bunco is a fun and social dice game based entirely on luck. No experience or special skills are required or needed. The game is played at tables of four in competing teams of two. Players take turns rolling the dice while trying to accumulate as many points as possible during each round. Winners are determined by the most BUNCOs, most wins and most losses, and prizes are predetermined by the host. How to play BUNCO for 12 players Getting Started: • • • • • • You will need three tables with four chairs at each table. Label the tables: Table 1 (Head table), Table 2 and Table 3 Supply each table with three dice, two pencils, and two table scorecards Bell at Table 1 to signal rounds BUNCO token (to be passed around to each player that receives a BUNCO during the course of the game) Determine who starts at what table by randomly placing a: # 1, # 2 or #3 on the back of the players scorecards when they arrive. This will tell each player what table to start at. Playing the game: There are four sets of six rounds of BUNCO EX: Set 1, Round 1= goal is to roll ones Set 1, Round 2= goal is to roll twos Set 1, Round 3= goal is to roll threes Follow this sequence until you get to sixes. Once round six is completed, set 2, round 1 begins; once round six of set 2 ends, set 3, round 1 begins; once round six of set 3 ends, set 4, round 1 begins. Table 1 controls the pace of the game by starting each round and ending each round with a ring of the bell. As soon as a team at Table 1 reaches 21 points, the bell rings and all tables must stop. Players change places, or move to a different table and roll the next number when Table 1 rings the bell. Each player takes turns, trying to roll the same number on the dice as the current round. If a player rolls that number in the round, continue to roll again; if no numbers in that round are rolled, pass the dice to the person on your left. You and your teammate will keep a cumulative tally score of all your points for the round on the table scorecards. The round is over when Table 1 reaches 21 points. Each player marks a “W” (win) or “L” (loss) in the space provided on their own score card for that round. A win is determined by the team with the highest points for that round. If you are in the middle of rolling and continue to score points even after the bell has been rung, you may continue your turn. In case of a tie, see the Tiebreaker section. BUNCO How to change places or move tables: Table 1 (Head table)- The winning team at Table 1stays there. One of the players moves to a chair next to their previous teammate, so that each person has a new partner from Table 2. The losing team at Table 1 moves down to Table 2 and switches partner. Table 2- The winning team at Table 2 moves up to Table 1, and becomes a partner with the winning team that has stayed at Table 1. The losing team from Table 2 moves down to Table 3 and switches partners. Table 3- The winning team at Table 3 moves up to Table 2, switching partners. The losing team at Table 3 stays at the table; one player moves to a different seat so that they each get a different partner. Once all the teams switch tables and partners, Table 1 rings the bell, signaling the next round. Continue playing until two complete sets have been completed (6 rounds per set). At this point, take a break and continue the last two sets. The game ends when all four sets of BUNCO have been completed. Each person then adds up their total points: BUNCO wins, amount of round wins and losses, writing these totals at the bottom of their score sheet. Prizes are then awarded at this time. Tiebreakers during a round If both teams have a tied score at the end of a round, they participate in a roll-off. Each player is allowed to roll the dice again for one session to accumulate additional points and end the tie. Player #1 starts off rolling first. This player will continue to roll and accumulate points as long as they are successfully rolling the number of that round. and Example, at the end of Round 2, a table's teams is tied. Player #1 rolls accumulates 1 point. Player #1 rolls again but does not roll any dice. The dice are passed to Players #2 - #4 who all receive chances to accumulate points. If at the end of this session one team is now in the lead, the roll-off ends. The team with the highest score is deemed the winner. If needed, additional roll-off sessions are repeated until the tie is broken. BUNCO Keeping Score Æ Æ Æ 1 point for each number rolled in that round. Example: Round 3- goal is to roll “threes” • two ‘threes’ are rolled= 2 points, roll all three dice again • one ‘three’ is rolled= 1 point, roll all three dice again • no ‘threes’ are rolled. Pass the dice to the next player • mark down 3 points for your team • everyone keeps taking turns rolling, until Table1 reaches 21points 5 points for a three-of-a-kind- not on the round number currently being played. Example: Round 3- goal is to roll “threes” for one point, or three of another number to get 5 points. • two ‘threes’ are rolled= 2 points, roll all three dice again • three ‘ones’ are rolled= 5 points, roll all three dice again • no ‘threes’ are rolled. Pass the dice to the next player • mark down 8 points for your team 21 points for each BUNCO rolled in that round. Example: Round 3- goal is to roll “threes” for one point, or three ‘threes’ to get a BUNCO • two ‘threes’ are rolled= 2 points, roll all three dice again • three ‘threes’ are rolled= 21 points- BUNCO!!! Yell it out for all to hear, receive the BUNCO token, mark a “B” on your score card, and roll all three dice again. (If you are at Table 1, ring the bell, because the round is now over, since you have reached 21 points) • no ‘threes’ are rolled. Pass the dice to the next player • mark down 23 points for your team and one BUNCO point for the player that rolled the BUNCO. How to play with more than 12 players It’s easy to host a BUNCO tournament with more than 12 players. You will need to increase your tables, chairs and supplies. Keep the same format for 12 players: four players to a table, 12 players in a group, three tables per group. The players within one group will rotate between the same three tables, by using a designated color for each group with the use of balloons, table cloths, signs, etc. EX: Group one:red, Group two:blue Can I play with less than 12 players? Of course you can play with less than 12 people. All of the rules and formats stay the same, for any amount of players, just adjust your supplies, table and chair needs. Rotation is the same for switching partners and tables. If you do not have an equal number of people, use a ghost player to fill in a space. See BUNCO lingo for definition of a ghost player. BUNCO Prizes: Prizes should be determined by the host prior to starting the game, and the winners are determined at the end of the game, based on their wins, losses and BUNCOs. You have the option of choosing to give cash or item prizes. If you can get items donated for prizes, then all of your proceeds will go towards your donation to Special Olympics. The entry fee for registrants will be the majority of how you earn your money for the event. When considering the entry fee, think about the different prize levels, if you are offering the player snacks and refreshments, and how much out of pocket expenses you might have. Here is an example of prize levels: • Most BUNCOs- person with the most BUNCOs (B) • Most wins- person with the most “W” (wins) • Most losses- person with the most “L” (losses) • First or las BUNCO Use the sample donation letter if you would like to reach out to your community for: items used as prizes (gift baskets, gift certificates, etc.), donation of snacks, refreshments or desserts. BUNCO lingo: BUNCO Rolling "Three of a kind" with the current number round being rolled (a BUNCO is always worth 21 points for yourself and your teammate). Remember, only the player who rolls the BUNCO gets the actual BUNCO point at the bottom of their score sheet. If at any time a player at the Table1 rolls a BUNCO they immediately ring the bell to signal the end of that particular round. Round A round is a full turn of the number currently being rolled. As noted on the score sheet, each set is broken down into 6 rounds. Set The game is divided into 4 sets. 1 Set equals 6 rounds. BUNCO token An object (fuzzy dice, stuffed animal, etc) used to give the person that receives a BUNCO during a round. A prize could also be given to the last person holding the BUNCO token. Ghost If there are not enough players, a ghost player can be substituted. The ghost moves from chair to chair like any player would. If the ghost rolls a BUNCO, her team gets the 21 points and her teammate gets the BUNCO point.
