A Note from the
Artistic Director
Hello and welcome to the holidays at Seattle Children’s Theatre! With the amazing
adventure of Dick Whittington and His Cat, SCT is very pleased to offer you a fresh
version of a classic story. In England, the tale has been told for hundreds of years and
is as popular there as the Wizard of Oz is here, a holiday pantomime favorite. The story
is loosely based on a real man, Richard Whittington, who lived in the 14th century and
became Lord Mayor of London three times; he wasn’t poor himself like Dick in the play,
but he was known for his great generosity to the poor.
The script for Dick Whittington and His Cat was written by Jeff Church, a friend of
SCT and a well-known theatre artist who is the artistic director of The Coterie Theatre
in Kansas City. He wrote the play a long time ago and is delighted that SCT is producing
a new musical version.
And what a musical it is! Seattle composer,
writer, and actor Richard Gray has written an
exciting score that is an elegant and seamless
addition to the action of the play giving it new
energy, a driving beat, and very clever lyrics. Rich is
also the musical director of this production and he
is performing in several roles. You might remember
him as Centipede in last year’s James and the Giant
Peach, or his music from Lyle the Crocodile.
My favorite line from Rich’s score comes from
a song that the company sings to Dick when he’s
working up his courage to try and rescue Trueheart,
his cat, from the pirates: “You’ve been given a chance and a boy with a chance has
wings.” I truly believe that children succeed when they’re given a chance to do so.
Here at SCT – and everywhere, really – it’s our responsibility to help children have the
opportunity and the courage to tap their potential. We do it here through the fun and
inspiration of our plays and Drama School, and through the themes of stories like Dick
Whittington and His Cat that help children feel hopeful and confident that life can get
better – not just at the holidays, but any and every day of the year.
Enjoy the show, and all the best of the season to you.
“You’ve been
given a
chance and
a boy with a
chance has
wings.”

SYNOPSIS
Young Dick Whittington, an orphan
in England, has heard fantastic tales of
the city of London, and goes there in
search of a street paved with gold. While
Dick asks passersby where to find the
wondrous street, he accidentally spills
the purse of Miss MacGrundy who is
chaperoning her young charge, Alice
Fitzwarren. Miss MacGrundy accuses
Dick of thievery, but Alice’s father arrives
and tells Miss MacGrundy to release
Dick. Taking pity on Dick’s gullibility and
recognizing his honesty, Mr. Fitzwarren
offers him a job and instructs MacGrundy
to arrange lodging for the boy in his
house.
MacGrundy, however, has no
sympathy for Dick and sends him to
sleep in an attic overrun with rats. After a
wakeful night, Dick’s first errand is to help
the butler Hopkins bring meat from the
butcher shop. But Hopkins gives the boy
a coin for the butcher and sends him off
all on his own. Dick becomes hopelessly
lost and runs into a poor stranger and
his cat. The stranger tells him of how the
tabby saved his life, and offers the cat to
Dick in exchange for his coin, claiming
that she will bring good luck. Dick loves
the cat and gives the stranger the coin.
When he arrives back at the Fitzwarren
house everyone is asleep, so he climbs
to his attic. The rats reappear, but Dick’s
cat chases them away. He sees the cat is a
true friend and gives her a special name—
Trueheart.
Dick’s luck is looking up, until the
spiteful MacGrundy puts Trueheart in a
box and sends her off on a ship, claiming
she ran away. Alice suspects the truth and
tells Dick who sets sail in pursuit. Dick’s
quest to recover Trueheart leads to great
adventure and changes his life forever.

A CHAT WITH BEN BAIRD,
MASTER STAGE CARPENTER
As the master stage carpenter I get to wear
a lot of hats, both literally and figuratively.
Most people think that I build all the
scenery that you see on stage. It makes
sense, my job title says “stage carpenter”
after all, but it is actually the “scenic
carpenters” who build the amazing sets. So
here’s a clue—one of the biggest parts of
my job is making sure you don’t notice me
during the play. Sometimes it means I’m
dressed entirely in black, or in some shows
I might be costumed like the actors, but one
thing always seems the same—everyone
wants me to cover my head so I blend into
the crowd.
The first part of my job is to work with the
director of the show, the scenic designer
and the technical director to help figure
out how to make the transitions between
locations flow smoothly, so that to the
audience it all seems simple. For example,
in this show there’s this boat. Well, it’s not
really a boat. It’s a ship. It’s a big ship! It’s
in fact such a big ship, it doesn’t fit easily
backstage. So how will we get it on stage?
The technical director Mike Hase and I
work together on how to make it all work.
Do we use people to push it? Do we use a
cable and a motor on a track? See if you can
tell what we decided.
14 SEATTLE CHILDREN’S THEATRE
“The best part of my
job is that it’s never
the same. Every
show I do is different
from every other.”
The best part of my job is that it’s never
the same. Every show I do is different from
every other. Sometimes I’m pushing giant
set pieces by hand, then in the next I’m
pressing a button and mechanical motors
and cables are doing all that hard labor
for me. Then I might be manipulating a
puppet while all the actors are busy doing
something else in the show. Each time
the location of the play changes or there’s
some kind of magic trick that happens on
stage, it’s a good bet the guy in the hat had
something to do with it.
Ben Baird has worked for Seattle Children’s
Theatre since 1998. In that time he has
worked as an electrician, prop artisan, shop
carpenter, master stage carpenter, crew chief,
and the Summer Stage technical director and
scenic designer.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Greetings from our Show Sponsors
Bank of America welcomes you to
Dick Whittington and His Cat! We are
glad to be part of this wonderful and
unique production. We are equally
excited to continue our partnership
with Seattle Children’s Theatre. We
recognize that artistic and cultural
institutions, like SCT, play a vital
role in building community. This
collaboration is an example of the
commitment Bank of America has
made to creating greater access for
individuals and families to the arts.
Our support of the arts also helps
promote cultural understanding and
engages individuals, organizations
and cultures in creative ways to build
mutual respect. When we invest in
the arts, we strengthen institutions
that in turn contribute to local
economies; we expand access to
experiences that challenge, inspire
and motivate; we set opportunity in
motion in a climate of innovation
and tolerance.
We’re glad to be sharing this
experience with you. Together
we’re all citizens of one of the finest
communities anywhere! From all of
us at Bank of America, thank you for
supporting Seattle Children’s Theatre.
Enjoy the show!

Medical science and skill saved Eli.
A generous community saved his family.
Born with Down syndrome, Eli Harrington spent the first
days of his life in intensive care. Three months later, he
had major surgery to repair a defective heart. Then came
treatment for severe seizures. Most recently, he underwent
major skull surgery to correct a serious cranial condition.
Highly skilled specialists at Seattle Children’s have saved
Eli’s life more than once. Even with health insurance, the
Harrington’s medical bills were overwhelming. Once again,
Seattle Children’s was there to help—with financial relief
through uncompensated care. Thousands of families benefit
from the fund, which is supported by the generosity of
everyday people like you. To learn more or donate, visit
seattlechildrens.org/ways-to-help. Eli thanks you.
