If you can’t find an event that speaks to your particular interest, or can’t afford the travel and fees, consider putting together something homemade. Four of us, all Potters Council members, have been getting together for several years to share clay projects. Clay Camp started with two of us—Elizabeth Krome and me—getting together informally to work in each other’s studios on an irregular basis. Over time, Nancy Ross joined us, and then after she overheard our plans during NCECA, Becky Garrity joined the group. The four of us teach clay in a variety of venues. Nancy runs the clay program at a small private college and is an adjunct at our Community College; Elizabeth teaches classes at a local Parks and Recreation program; Becky teaches at a cooperative studio, in adult education through the local school system, and at a residential community for mentally challenged people; left to right: nan rothwell, becky garrity, elizabeth Krome, nancy ross and I offer classes and workshops in my studio. Between us, we have decades of teaching experience, so we always spend time comparing notes on how best to explain and demonstrate techniques. My Clay Camp pals provided me with valuable material and feedback for my teaching DVD’s on throwing and glazing. It’s relatively easy for me to host Clay Camp here as I already have a classroom setup in my studio. But even a small studio can squeeze in a couple of extra bodies for a short session. Make it BYOW (bring your own wheel) or take turns showing each other techniques you enjoy, using the equipment on hand. I work almost entirely on the wheel, so at my request, we once focused a full Clay Camp session on handbuilding. I came away with multiple fun projects for my classes. Our typical Clay Camp extends over a couple of nights. While we have not yet made s’mores or had a campfire, the experience embodies the best of Camp to me—a time away from daily schedules to share great food, friendship, and a mutual passion for clay. If you would like more information on starting your own version of Clay Camp, feel free to contact me. My email is [email protected] JOIN US! As the Potters Council expands member benefits and develops new programs, there are more opportunities than ever for members to participate. Get involved in Potters Council activities. You can support a great organization where you meet other artists and exchange information and insights about our shared love of clay. The Board will meet during NCECA on: • Annual General Meeting—Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 8:30-9:30 a.m. • Membership Meeting—Friday, March 30, 2012 at 7:00-8:00 a.m. Both meetings will be held in the Jefferson Room, 4th Floor Union Tower, Sheraton Seattle Hotel. Please join us! 2 letter from the president: john baymore, potters council president As I sit down to write this spring column, I am realizing that I am approaching the one year mark in my role as the President of your organization. The time certainly flew by. I’ve learned a lot in the past year, and it wasn’t all about controlling wet clay and firing wood kilns. As I look back on this time, I find a lot of things have happened within the Potters Council during that year. The biggest news of this past year is that we really have the new mentoring program well on its way. We now have the first successful international workshop offering under our belt, and a second one to Tuscany coming very soon. The first online Juried Student Exhibition is now a reality. We have a new searchable online member directory. We have a relief fund set up for potters in Japan to provide them with assistance after the 2011 earthquake. The “Making a Difference” Ceramic Community Builders award is about to be launched. The Potters Council “Question of the Week” in the Ceramic Arts Daily. forum is generating a lot of great educational and fun content, and is attracting new people to the forum and the organization. We’ve dealt with two mid-term Board resignations and the seating of two new replacement Board members. We decided to change the nature of the officer selection process to improve executive officer continuity. We have changed the recording Secretary’s position to that of a professional ACerS staff member, thereby freeing up a Board member’s attention at meetings. We have improved the By-Laws of the organization to increase its effectiveness and provide better guidance to future Boards. We are now heading into 2013 with a formal Strategic Planning Session scheduled to help effectively chart the future of this organization. In an exciting very recent development, we have seen Sherman Hall, Editor of Ceramics Monthly magazine take over the role of Managing Director of the Ceramic Publications Company, which means he will be working closely with Carolyn Dorr, who plans and implements all Potters Council benefits and events. Together, they are the ACerS representatives to the Potters Council Board. I may have that fancy sounding title of “President”, but all I do is chair some long meetings, occasionally look at Robert’s Rules Of Order, annoy various people by asking a lot of pesky questions, sniff around archaic old paperwork items, send a lot of emails, and struggle at writing these columns. What is accomplished each year by the Potters Council is really about the efforts of the numerous people out “in the trenches”. It is the volunteer Board members, the volunteer Committee members, and the professional Potters Council administrative staff of The American Ceramic Society that are the real lifeblood of this organization of yours. They do all of the hard work. My thanks go to each of them for all that they contribute. There are two special people who are rotating off of your Board of Directors as we head to the annual meeting that happens in conjunction with the annual NCECA conference in Seattle. Both of them have been officers of the Board. There is also one person from The official newsletter of The Potters Council of The American Ceramic Society the ACerS organization who has moved on to new challenges within that organization. They all have made a significant contribution to this organization and therefore to you, the membership. They certainly will be missed, but not forgotten. Chris Campbell, who has been a Board member, President, and then Past President over many years is the first one I’ll mention. As Past President, Chris has helped me greatly as I assumed the role of President. She knew just where to “kick the motor to get it started” and has helped to pass that knowledge on to me. (Hopefully, I’ve been a decent student.) Many of the programs and benefits that you have been enjoying over the past number of years, including this past year, can be attributed directly to her super-womanly efforts. Paul Andrew Wandless is the second. It is hard to really fathom all of the work that Paul has done for you, the membership, during his tenure as Board member and Vice President. His oversight of the various committees has taken countless hours of work, and he has always been full of insightful comments and ideas. Paul never complained when something new was added to his plate; he just took it on and did his usual exceptional job. Lastly there is Charlie Spahr, who is now the Executive Director of The American Ceramic Society, which is our parent organization. While still very much aware of and involved in the Potters Council Charlie has taken on expanded responsibilities at ACerS and has passed some of his Potters Council duties to Sherman. A consummate professional, Charlie has always been highly supportive of the Potters Council Board and was instrumental in helping to get things done when they were needed. Charlie’s support over the years has helped to make the Potters Council a financially stable and successful part of the American Ceramic Society. So “thanks” Chris, Paul, and Charlie. You have made a difference. Shortly we will be seating the new incoming Board members that you have selected to represent you in the last round of elections. It was a great slate of candidates, and I am looking forward to working with the evolving Board makeup in the future. We continue to steadily move forward into our next 10 years. If you are attending NCECA in Seattle, please stop by the annual Potters Council Members Exhibition located in the Resource hall. A number of your Board members will be there and we look forward to talking with you. Make sure to also come to the Annual Membership Meeting at NCECA on Friday, March 30 from 7:00 to 8:00 AM in Sheraton’s Jefferson Room on the 4th Floor of the Union Tower. It is your chance to be heard in person and to participate in the governance of your organization. Yeah, it is very early in the morning, but we’ll feed you a continental breakfast in return for tolerating that annoying alarm clock. © The American Ceramic Society The American Ceramic Society assumes no responsibility for the statements and opinions advanced by the contributions to its publications. By Chris Campbell Past-President of Potters Council I have been on the Potters Council Board for four years, so I consider this my Graduation. My course work is done; it is time to move on. As I reflect on my time on the Board, I am very proud of all we have accomplished. I have worked with some marvelous potters who have given up a lot of their time to make your life just a little bit easier and I sincerely thank them for all of their hard work. I would like to express a special THANKS to Paul Wandless for being the best vicepresident ever and for serving his terms with consistent care and attention. I’d also like to thank Marcia Selsor for her help and encouragement as Past President when I was learning the ropes. I want to express my appreciation and thanks to Carolyn Dorr and Charles Spahr at ACerS. I have been a bothersome nag at times yet they still listen to my ideas. One of the highlights of my four years happened during NCECA in Philly when we all noticed a sudden shift in potters’ attitudes towards Potters Council. Before then attendees would kind of slink past our booth and hope no one caught their eye so they would not have to talk to us. That year however, people came up to the booth and asked us to tell them about Potters Council. They even asked if they could join! We could see we were finally gaining the trust of our peers and that was awesome. Our fabulous juried shows are also a wonderful achievement. Many Board Members teach workshops so we knew talented studio potters were going un-noticed by the pottery establishment. It has been a thrill to see their wonderful work showcased and I look forward to many more years of PC Shows. As with any ongoing position, there is a lot of work left in mid-process. I tend to be a ‘doting the i’s and crossing the t’s’ kind of person, so loose ends are difficult! Fortunately the current Board is a safe bet for getting it all done. I welcome the newly elected Members of the Board as well as those who have kindly stepped up to fill early vacancies. I believe they will be an exciting, strong Board and look forward to hearing about the good work they will do. What’s next for me? Glorious time in my studio to perfect a new technique for coloring clay. Then teaching lots of workshops so others can learn it too. I am writing a few magazine articles and creating exciting new artwork. Yes, I am going to be very busy, but I will still be popping up on the CAD forum to answer any questions I can. In conclusion, I would like to THANK YOU all for electing me to the Board, for sharing your questions and comments, for submitting your work to our shows and calendars, for attending our workshops, and for staying active Members of this wonderful organization.
