Finalement, quelles sont aujourd’hui les conditions pour qu’une marque de VTT émerge
durablement sur un marché planétaire et caractérisé par une offre pléthorique
et linéaire ? Qualité, authenticité, personnalité, caution sportive, sont certes des
facteurs de succès incontournables. Mais la faculté d’innover, de développer et de
créer sans cesse des technologies nouvelles, qui permettent à notre discipline d’aller
toujours plus loin en terme de performance et de plaisir, est essentielle.
Chez Lapierre, le rebond créatif permanent est notre meilleure façon d’avancer.
Présenter enfin la concrétisation d’années de Recherche & Développement et de
tests terrain est à chaque fois une grande fierté. Pas toujours facile, me direz-vous,
de faire encore mieux que les années précédentes.
Et pourtant 2013 s’annonce déjà comme un millésime exceptionnel. À côté des
multiples nouveautés visibles sur l’ensemble des gammes et bien sûr notre nouveau
modèle XR, un tout suspendu de cross country en 29” ultra-light, à la ligne et aux
performances inouïes, 2013 devrait rester dans les annales grâce au lancement
du premier système de suspension intelligent. Une petite révolution développée par
Lapierre et ses partenaires du groupe Accell, et qui devrait beaucoup faire parler
d’elle. Pas mal pour une marque Française leader qui s’enorgueillit de concevoir,
développer et assembler la majeure partie de ses VTT sur ses deux sites français, et
d’être présente dans plus de 20 pays.
Innover, mais également être porteur de sens en étant étroitement associé, depuis
25 ans, à l’histoire et l’évolution de ce sport, à travers nos succès techniques et nos
champions, Nicolas Vouilloz en tête. Est-ce d’ailleurs un hasard si Lapierre devient

Pour que votre suspension
ne soit plus un casse-tête
Lapierre invente
la première suspension intelligente
Jadis légion, les détracteurs du VTT tout suspendu ont
heureusement disparu. Qu’il s’agisse de cross country, de
randonnées engagées en montagne ou bien sûr d’Enduro,
ces modèles apportent une aisance, un confort et une
motricité que nul aujourd’hui ne saurait contester. Seul
bémol, selon que l’on dévale une piste technique, que l’on
gravisse un single pierreux, ou que l’on envoie la gomme
sur un chemin forestier, on ne demande pas la même
chose à l’amortisseur arrière. Si les technologies Lapierre
anti-pompage, à l’instar de FPS 2, OST ou Pendbox
résolvent en partie cette problématique, d’autres
modèles adoptent des systèmes plus classiques avec
2 ou 3 positions selon le terrain. Mais il s’avère assez
compliqué pour le pilote, dans le feu de l’action, d’anticiper
ces réglages de manière permanente et optimale. Celui-ci
doit déjà gérer beaucoup de paramètres : sa trajectoire,
son braquet, sa fourche, son effort, son alimentation…
alors au bout d’une heure de selle, on a tendance à
oublier l’amortisseur arrière dont le réglage devient
alors une composante secondaire. Celui-ci demeure
alors en position ouverte, ce qui peut nuire fortement
aux performances, ou au pire en position fermée, ce qui
devient inconfortable et peut en altérer le fonctionnement.
Résultat : une composante essentielle de votre vélo
reste largement sous-utilisée, vous obligeant à faire des
compromis entre confort et performance.
Et si c’est votre VTT, en fonction du terrain rencontré,
qui gérait ce paramètre à votre place ? Difficile à croire ?
Et bien Lapierre l’a fait. Après 5 ans de développement
et de mise au point , la mise sur le marché du concept
e:i shock est un événement majeur pour tous les pilotes
exigeants. Avec un VTT Lapierre équipé e:i shock, quel
que soit le terrain rencontré, votre amortisseur est
toujours dans la bonne position et son fonctionnement
optimisé. Il n’y a donc plus de compromis à faire !
Comment ça marche ?
e:i shock est composé d’un écran de contrôle,
d’une batterie et de 3 capteurs :
• 1 capteur de chocs au niveau de la fourche
• 1 accéléromètre au niveau de la potence
• 1 capteur de pédalage
Votre amortisseur e:i shock dispose de 4 modes :
1. Pédalage et pas de choc = Fermé
2. Pédalage et petits chocs = Platforme
3. Pédalage et gros chocs = Ouvert
4. Pas de pédalage = Ouvert
Cette innovation technologique sans équivalent dote
votre VTT d’un véritable cerveau capable d’analyser le
terrain et d’adapter instantanément les réglages de
l’amortisseur.

Effortless Suspension
Une réactivité maximale :
Les capteurs avant analysent en permanence la
nature du terrain rencontré (chocs) et transmettent
l’information à l’amortisseur en 0,1 seconde. (soit la
distance entre la roue avant et la roue arrière à 36 km/h)
Résultat : votre système de suspension se régule de
20 à 30 fois par minute, bien plus que ne pourrait en
effectuer un cerveau humain. Vous avez l’esprit libre et la
performance de votre VTT est optimale.
Une plateforme multi-fonctions :
L’écran de contrôle e:i shock est dotée des fonctions
classiques d’un compteur (vitesse, chrono, distance
parcourue, vitesse moyenne et instantanée…) et vous
indique en plus votre cadence de pédalage, le niveau de
la batterie (autonomie 25 heures) ainsi que la position
instantanée de l’amortisseur.
L’ensemble e:i shock, esthétique et compact, ne pèse
que 350 gr.

Numerous in the past, critics of full-suspension have
virtually disappeared. Used for cross country, epic
mountain descents, or Enduro, these ‘fully-suspended’
models bring you undeniable ease, comfort and
maneuverability. The only problem is that, whether you
are negotiating technical trails, climbing a rocky single
track or racing through the forest, you need to adjust
how your rear shock responds according to the terrain.
If the Lapierre technologies, such as FPS 2, OST or
Pendbox prevent pedal kickback, some other models
offer you more basic systems based on the rear shock
adjustability, with 2 or 3 positions to choose according
to the terrain. Undeniably, it remains difficult for the
rider to anticipate which shock position is best for the
moment. While concentrating on direction, speed, fork
set-up, effort and even nutrition, setting the rear shock
easily becomes secondary and can be forgotten. The
shock either remains open, which can be detrimental
to your performance, or even worse, locked, which
becomes uncomfortable and may limit its function.
The result is that an essential part of your bike remains
under-utilized and you are forced to choose between
comfort and performance.

Well, Lapierre did it. After 5 years of development
and tests, the launch of e:i shock is a revolution for
demanding riders. A Lapierre MTB, equipped with the
e:i shock technology, means your rear shock is always in
the right position and always functioning optimally. No
more compromise!
How does it work?
e:i shock is composed of a display unit, a battery and 3
sensors :
• 1 accelerometer on the fork
• 1 accelerometer on the stem
• 1 cadence sensor
The e:i shock offers 4 adjustable modes :
1. Pedaling + no shock = blocked (locked)
2. Pedaling + light hits = platform (medium)
3. Pedaling + big hits = open (open)
4. No pedaling = open
This unique technological innovation gives your MTB
intelligence: the ability to analyze the terrain and to
instantly adapt the shock settings.

Maximum reactivity :
The entire process takes .01 seconds between the
sensors registering bump movement and cadence, to
adjustment of the rear shock (distance between the
front and rear wheel, travelling at 36 km/h) .
Result : the position of your suspension system changes
between 20 and 30 times per minute, much more
than a rider could do manually. Thanks to this, you keep
your focus on your riding and your bike is performing
optimally.
A multi-function platform:
The e:i shock display has the same functions as a bike
computer (speed, chrono, distance, average speed,
current speed…) and shows your cadence, the battery
reserve (full charge: 25 hours) as well as the current
position of the shock.
The e:i shock system, aesthetic and compact, only

Retour sur un prodige
A prodigy’s history
Tout petit déjà, le jeune niçois est un touche à tout du 2 roues : BMX, Freestyle,
vélo de route, Moto Cross, moto trial… Mais c’est en 1990, poussé par un de
ses copains de classe, qu’il s’inscrit à sa première compétition de DH, avec
déjà une victoire à la clé. Il a alors 14 ans et est à l’aube d’une immense carrière.
Pendant plus de 10 ans, celui que l’on va surnommer très vite l’extra-terrestre, va
dominer de manière outrancière la discipline, où pourtant il est bien difficile d’être
régulier à haut niveau tant la part d’incertitude est grande : (chutes, blessures,
incidents mécaniques)... Ce qui rend d’autant plus incroyable son palmarès :
10 fois champion du Monde entre 1992 et 2002 (dont trois titres chez les juniors)
en 11 participations. Il est également vainqueur de 5 coupes du Monde, de 3
championnats d’Europe et de multiples titres nationaux, ce qui fait de lui un des
sportifs français le plus titré.
Growing up in Nice, France, Nico was into all types of riding: Freestyle, Road, Motocross,
Trials bikes… Then, in 1990, challenged by one of his school friends, he took part
in his first DH competition – only to win it ! He was then only 14, and at the dawn
of a terrific career. For more than 10 years, Nico –nicknamed ET – dominated
the DH circuit. A real feat, considering the typical race hazards such as crashes,
injuries and mechanical failures. His achievements are impressive : 10x World
Champion between 1992 and 2002 (including 3 victories as a Junior). 10 wins out
of the 11 World Championships in which he competed. He also won 5 World Cups,
3 European Championships, and numerous national races, and remains one of the
most rewarded French athletes.
Sur 2 ou 4 roues, même combat. En 2003, le génial touche-à-tout s’essaye également
au rallye automobile, intègre un an plus tard l’équipe de France FFSA, engrange les
victoires et devient champion IRC sur une Peugeot 207 en 2008.
Mais le VTT reste son univers de prédilection et Nicolas se consacre ces dernières
années aux descentes marathon et à l’enduro. Épreuves où il collectionne les podiums
et teste impitoyablement les limites de son Spicy. Mais son perfectionnisme ne se
limite pas aux modèles Enduro. Nicolas teste et participe à la mise au point de chaque
modèle Lapierre, de la gamme Raid au DH team, lequel requiert toute son savoir-faire
et son art inégalé du pilotage.
2 or 4 wheels? Same challenge. In 2003, looking for a change, Nico tried Rally cars and
liked it. One year later, he joined the FFSA French Team, racking up victories. In 2008
he became IRC Champion with his Peugeot 207.
However, MTB remains his favorite sport, and Nicolas has dedicated the past few
years to Marathon DH and Enduro races, winning most of them and pushing his Spicy
to the limits. We are fortunate that Nico’s skill and knowledge is not limited to Enduro
bikes: he tests and perfects each Lapierre MTB model, from the Raid range through
DH Team. That’s a lot of models for many different types of rider: each one benefits
from a touch of ET.

le maître et la jeune garde / the master and the young guard
Non content de s’aligner avec brio sur les circuits Enduro avec son Spicy, Nicolas Vouilloz
est un consultant de luxe pour le team DH. Grâce à son expertise et le feed back de
3 saisons de coupe de monde, le vélo du team, doté de la technologie supersonique
Pendbox s’est encore affuté pour plus de performance. C’est encore Nicolas qui a
repéré Loïc Bruni en 2011. Depuis, le champion de France Junior a pris son envol et a
fait une entrée remarquée dans le Top 5 mondial sur les manches de coupe du Monde.
Un renfort de poids pour nos 3 autres pilotes, dont la fougue est plus que jamais
présente : Sam Blenkinshop, la bombe néozélandaise (3e du Championnat du Monde
2011), le jeune surdoué Patrick Thome et Cameron Cole (2eme de la Coupe du Monde de
Fort William 2010), qui réalise une superbe saison en terminant régulièrement dans le
top 5 en Coupe du Monde.
When not ripping up the Enduro circuit with his Spicy, Nicolas Vouilloz devotes time
to working with the Lapierre DH Team. His year’s of expertise have helped design the
Team DH bike, in use for 3 successful DH WC seasons. Equipped with the praised
Pendbox technology, for 2013 it gets further upgrades to its performance. Not only
does Nico work to improve the team’s bikes, he also has contributed to its members.
Nicolas brought Loïc Bruni to the team in 2011. Since then, the French Junior Champion
continues to rise, and claimed his first WC podium with a fantastic 5th place in Windham
2012. A real support for our 3 DH racers: Sam Blenkinshop, the stylin’ Kiwi (3rd 2011
World Championship), young talent Patrick Thome and Cameron Cole (2nd 2010 Fort
William WC), who consistently finishes in the World Cup top 5.

would have been to sit back and bask in the glow of
success. That, however, would be a serious misjudgement of our R&D department. They are constantly
striving for improvement. The new 2013 Lapierre DH

Popping up this summer in bike parks and mountain
resorts, the Froggy has been revamped with a more
aggressive geometry. Great for the bike parks or even
on the DH racetracks, with its OST 180 mm alloy frame,
larger seatstays and tapered headset. It’s available in
compact sizing and with a double crown fork …The Froggy
only has one limit – yours.

NicoVouilloz’s weapon of choice in Enduro series or
Mégavalanches has once more been improved at the
king’s request. The result is, tweaked geometry for more
stiffness and rider comfort : a shorter seat tube assists in

Comment ça marche ?
L’effet de pompage est toujours contré par l’effort de
pédalage : la tension de la chaîne ramène toujours le bras
oscillant à sa position d’équilibre.
Si l’amortisseur est parfaitement réglé en fonction du
poids du pilote, la performance et la motricité du VTT

travel bikes (All Mountain, Enduro and Freeride). This
patented technology paved the way for our Zesty, Spicy

Challenged daily by Nicolas Vouilloz, whose Enduro racing
pushed the Spicy to its limits, Lapierre’s engineers
launched an improved suspension called OST+ to
improve downhill handling and provide greater efficiency
in the climbs.
In 2013, Nico re-worked the geometry on Spicy and
Zesty, even further improving the OST+ performance.

The equilibrium point considers rider weight, and each
pedal stroke brings the rear swing arm back to that
equilibrium point, thereby eliminating any pedal bob.

How does it work?
Any force created by pedal feedback is countered by
pedalling: the tension created in the chain by a pedal
stroke brings the swing arm back to its equilibrium
point. The suspension remains active and ready to
absorb any hits.
With correct rear shock adjustment (simple to do,
thanks to the user-friendly sag guide), the efficiency and
performance are optimal.

technologie à une adaptation 120 mn, dédiée au VTT

Comment allier l’extrême efficacité des technologies
anti-pompage FPS2 et OST, avec un système
d’amortissement optimisé, totalement débridé et
encore plus performant ? En dissociant totalement le
rendement de l’amortissement, la nouvelle cinématique
Pendbox permet d’obtenir un maximum d’efficacité au
pédalage et à l’amortissement.
Grâce à un boîtier de pédalier pendulaire, (Pendbox),

Nouveauté majeure de la collection off road 2013, ce pur
crosseur en 29” se distingue par ses lignes innovantes
et épurées et son poids plume. Digne descendant du
modèle Xrace de 2004, qui avait marqué les esprits, ce
cadre spécifiquement conçu pour le 29” par les ingénieurs
Lapierre, adopte une géométrie dédiée à la compétition,
une structure simplifiée à l’extrême et nouveau système
mono-pivot, garantie d’un gain de poids important et d’une
rigidité optimisée.
La suppression de l’articulation entre les bases et les
haubans est compensée par le « flex » du triangle arrière
carbone. L’amortisseur Fox spécialement développé pour
le XR, est réglable manuellement sur 3 positions : CTD
(Climb, Trail, Down) et permet d’obtenir un débattement
de 100 mm. XR est compatible e:i shock, pour une
meilleure qualité de pilotage.
Véritable alternative au Hard Tail, ce VTT très dynamique
s’avère une vraie bête de course. Très performant en
côtes, grâce à son poids et une adhérence hors pair, le
XR est également hyper à l’aise en descente grâce à la

A major innovation of the 2013 MTB range, this pure
29’’cross-country bike is noted for its innovative, sleek
design and light weight. As a worthy descendant of the
well-loved 2004 Xrace, this frame was specifically
conceived by our engineers for 29” wheels.
The XR geometry is oriented towards competition. Its
elegant yet simple design via a new mono-pivot system,
guarantees critical weight loss and optimized stiffness.
The elimination of linkages between seat stays and chain
stays decreases weight, and is compensated by carbon
flexibility on these areas.
The Fox rear shock has been specifically developed
and tuned for the XR and can be set up manually on 3
positions : CTD (Climb, Trail, Down) so as to offer
100 mm of travel. XR is also compatible with e:i shock,
for even better riding response.
The bike is a viable alternative to hardtails yet remains a
dynamic racing weapon! Superbly efficient while climbing,
thanks to its light weight and excellent traction, the XR
is equally good in descents, due to the rear shock / 29’’
wheel combination coupled with a low position that gives
the rider confidence.
As required by our engineers, the rider position is similar
to that of the 26”, due to a low bottom bracket and
negative rise stem.

Le VTT aux « grandes roues », venu d’outre-atlantique où
il fait un malheur, comporte des avantages significatifs

modèle dédié au 29’’ (XR). Ceci afin d’en optimiser les
bénéfices et réduire l’inertie qu’il pourrait entraîner.
Plus confortable, plus roulant, plus stable...
Le VTT 29” propose véritablement une alternative
intéressante aux 26’’ pour la pratique du cross-country.
C’est la première chose qui frappe lorsque l’on
utilise un 29’’. Ces grandes roues avec des pneus de
grosse section sont beaucoup moins sensibles aux
imperfections du terrain et permettent de franchir
plus facilement les obstacles. Les roues de 29’’ sont
moins arrêtées et chahutées par les imperfections
du terrain (creux, pierres, bosses, cailloux, racines).
Elles entrent moins en contact avec l’obstacle, on
passe mieux par dessus. Plus le terrain est difficile et
irrégulier, plus les grandes roues sont efficaces par
rapport aux petites !
Une motricité accrue :
La surface de contact au sol est différente de celle
d’un 26’’ et permet une meilleure adhérence en virage
ainsi qu’une meilleure motricité. Le fait que les pneus
résistent mieux au pincement permet aussi de réduire
la pression, et ainsi d’augmenter encore plus le
confort et l’accroche par rapport à un 26’’.
Les 29” possèdent un dernier avantage, qui ne concerne
que les pratiquants de très grande taille, qui ont parfois
du mal à trouver un vélo à leur mesure. Pour eux, les 29’’
peuvent représenter une solution satisfaisante car ils
disposeront d’un vélo plus homogène.
Une meilleure stabilité :
Alors, grandes ou petites roues ?
Deuxième qualité indéniable du 29’’: sa stabilité, en
descente notamment. Plus facile à piloter, il conserve
son équilibre et dévie peu de sa trajectoire. Dans les
descentes très raides, le vélo a moins tendance à pivoter
autour de la roue avant, risquant de vous faire passer
par dessus le guidon. Dévaler les pentes avec un tel vélo
est un vrai plaisir. Dans le même ordre d’idée, mais dans
l’autre sens, le vélo cabre moins dans les montées très
raides : finis les cabrages!
Chez Lapierre, si nous sommes restés longtemps
partagés sur la question, le développement du XR, VTT
haute performance construit autour du nouveau format
29’’, lève toute forme de débat.
Le choix appartient à l’utilisateur final. Disons que le
29’’ représente sans doute un choix judicieux pour les
pratiquants qui disposent d’un « bagage technique »
limité. En revanche, les puristes garderont leur
préférence pour le 26’’, qu’ils jugent plus nerveux, plus
maniable, et plus ludique. À vous de choisir.

In less than 2 years, 29” wheeled Mountain Bikes
became a real alternative to the classic 26’’. Is it a
short-term trend or does it offer a real advantage for
the riders ?
The ‘big-wheeled’ MTB has proven success in North
America, and offers significant advantages to racers.
Lapierre have studied the benefits of 29” and
approached the design of our 29” models considering
the bike in its entirety. The challenge was greater than
mounting bigger wheels on a 26’’frame, as it involved
adaption of geometry to existing platforms (Pro Rrace,
Raid) and to the creation of a new model dedicated to the
larger wheel size (XR). All this with just one goal in mind :
achieving the best performance and offering exceptional
ride quality.
Better comfort, momentum and stability...
The 29’’ MTB offers a real alternative to 26’’ for cross
country rides .
More comfort and better clearance :
Increased maneuverability :
It is really noticeable when you ride a 29’’. Big wheels
are much less sensitive to ground imperfections and
move over obstacles more easily. They offer improved
stability and speed when confronted with an obstruction
(holes, stones, bumps, rocks, roots). Since they have
less contact with the obstacle, it is easier to cross it.
The more difficult and uneven the tracks, the track, the
greater the efficiency of the big wheels in comparison to
the small ones!
The contact surface with the ground is different from
a 26’’, gripping better in corners and offering better
overall mobility. With more tire surface, they also gain
increased puncture resistance allowing you to ride with
less air and therefore gain comfort and grip over a 26” .
29” wheels have one final advantage : taller riders
sometimes find it hard to find a bike appropriate for their
height. 29ers can offer more variety and comfort.
So, big wheels or small wheels ?
Better stability :
Another undeniable quality of the 29’’ is its stability.
Particularly while descending. Easier to maneuver, it
maintains equilibrium and does not veer off course. In
very steep descents, the bike doesn’t pivot around the
front wheel, making it less likely that you will fly over
the handlebars! Fast descents just became more fun.
Climbing offers the same principle keeping the wheels
placed on the ground for better traction and control.

At Lapierre, the debate raged for some time, but
creating our high performance 29” XR ended the
discussion.
Ultimately, the decision remains with the rider.
A 29’’ remains a good choice for riders who are not
experts in technical tracks. However, purists will still
prefer the 26’’, as it is considered more dynamic and
agile. The choice is yours.

Nous sommes tous invités de la nature et nous sommes
responsables des chemins que nous laisserons demain,
à nos enfants… Pour l’avenir de notre pratique,
voici quelques règles de bon sens à appliquer.
We are all guests of Nature and we are responsible for
how we impact the environment for future users.
For our children... for ourselves.
Here are a few common sense rules to apply.

Je respecte l’environnement dans lequel j’évolue,
ainsi que la quiétude de la faune et de la flore.
Je rapporte tous mes déchets, même les plus petits et fais attention
à ne pas laisser échapper papiers ou bidons de mes poches.
Pour ne pas surprendre les autres usagers de la nature,
je ralentis et annonce systématiquement mon arrivée par un
«bonjour» ou à l’aide de ma sonnette lorsque cela est nécessaire.
Je respecte la nature
I respect nature
I respect the environment in which I move, and the tranquility
of the fauna and flora.
I remove all my garbage, and am careful to ensure nothing
escapes from my pockets or elsewhere.
Je respecte les autres usagers
I respect other trail users
To avoid surprising others on the trail I slow down
and announce my arrival with a “hello»
or using my bell where necessary.

Je respecte le sentier et ne pratique pas le hors piste
y compris pour couper un virage ou une épingle.
Je roule «propre» et n’abuse pas du dérapage
pour ne pas laisser de trace de mon passage.
Je m’engage dans la préservation et l’entretien des sentiers
auprès des gestionnaires et associations.
Je fais partager mon amour pour ce loisir en dialoguant avec
d’autres usagers dès que je le peux et en respectant le milieu
dans lequel j’évolue.
En toute circonstance je reste courtois et respectueux
de l’ensemble des usagers de la nature.
Je m’implique au maximum dans des démarches
de prévention et de médiation.
En bref, je suis constamment l’ambassadeur du VTT !

I respect the trail and do not ride off the trail to cut a corner
or take a short cut.
I ride in such a way to limit trail erosion and avoid skidding.
I am committed to the preservation and maintenance of trails
with my fellow riders and associations.
I am a constant Ambassador of and for Bikes!
I share my love of Cycling with other users and respect
the environment in which I move.
In all circumstances I remain courteous and respectful
and share the trail with everybody.
I am involved and interested in promoting sustainable trail
management solutions through advocacy.
