Setting the mood for a great event are our lovely BW NICE board members, from left: Board Secretary Lisa Fielding, Lisa Fielding Public Relations; Founder and Board President Diane Simovich, Balanced Living Solutions, LLC; Board Member Judy Gold, Coldwell Banker and Arbonne; and Board Member Dana Lane, Dana Lane Photography. Dear Friends, I’d like to personally welcome you to our second annual Red Shoe Luncheon and Fashion Show! This is an exciting time as we continue to grow, not only in our home chapter, but in the wider region as well. To celebrate our success, we have organized this special day off for friends, fashion, food, and fun. BW NICE was created to help women balance business with charitable outreach. At all of our meetings, socials and special events, we help women gain meaningful business connections, learn new ways to succeed, and find reinforcement for positive living. Proceeds from today’s event will go to our charity partner, SAFE in Hunterdon, a not-for-profit agency dedicated to serving victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Please read more about SAFE on page 8. On behalf of the entire board, I wish you a fabulous day of networking and fun and look forward to your continued participation in BW NICE. On The Cover. Many thanks to Consie Sindet, co-owner of Consie and Kristine Fantasy Face Painting and Body Art, who created the beautiful cover art for this year’s program. In addition to her business, Consie teaches decorative painting and creates murals and borders for homes and businesses in many states. Check out more of her art at www.consiesindet.com. 3 BW NICE Business Women Networking Involving Charity & Education Our Mission BW NICE, Business Women Networking Involving Charity & Education, provides women at all stages of business and personal life with support, education and resources. We see value in the balance of business and charitable outreach. We bring women together to gain meaningful business connections, learn new way to succeed, and foster an empowering environment. Each BW NICE chapter raises funds and awareness supporting a local organization in the fight against domestic violence. 4 More than 400 business women in Central Jersey have discovered a favorite recipe for networking: Start with friendship, stir in business, and mix with a dollop of charity. That’s the success formula of BW NICE — Business Women Networking Involving Charity and Education. Members describe the BW NICE experience as motivating and rewarding, both professionally and personally. As we come together in networking and education, we bring our collective skills and interests to the aid of women in distressed circumstances, lifting them up and cheering them on to success. We’ve gotten where we are through the support of those around us, and that’s what we want to do for our members and others in our community. At monthly breakfast sessions, members follow a typical networking agenda: 20-second business pitches, followed by a 15-minute educational talk. The difference is the charitable connection. BW NICE supports SAFE in Hunterdon (see page 8) by making regular in-kind donations and by holding the annual Red Shoe event. Our members include lawyers, doctors and entrepreneurs of all stripes, corporate and small business employees, job seekers, and homemakers with hobby businesses. Meetings held the second Wednesday of every month generally average 60 attendees. Registration and a bounteous breakfast start at 8:30 a.m. at Mountain View Chalet, 154 Route 173, in Asbury (just west of Clinton). For details, visit www.bwnice.org or call (908) 894-8219. BW NICE What are the membership requirements? There are no membership dues and no attendance or referral requirements. All women are welcome When does BW NICE meet? The Hunterdon Chapter meets the second Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Mountain View Chalet in Asbury, NJ. The Lehigh Valley Chapter meets the second Tuesday of each month from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Best Western Plus, Lehigh Valley Hotel & Conference Center. What does it cost to attend? Each breakfast event is $15 ($20 at Lehigh), payable at the door with cash, credit card, or check (payable to BW NICE). Q&A What can I expect at meetings? Networking – We build friendships and gain access to other professional women. Education – We share best practices and business-building successes, and hear a selected speaker at every meeting. Charity – We partner with SAFE in Hunterdon. Is BW NICE looking for business and corporate sponsors? Yes. We actively pursue partnerships within the local business community. By teaming with us, companies find business associates and sponsor outreach work. We also develop strategic partnerships with other women’s organizations as a way to empower female business leaders. Dear Red Shoe Guests & Sponsors, On behalf of the SAFE in Hunterdon Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers, I celebrate and thank BW NICE for taking on the cause of domestic and sexual abuse prevention right alongside us. For over 30 years, SAFE in Hunterdon has been part of this community, helping child, teen and adult survivors of domestic and sexual abuse find their wings of empowerment through safe housing, crisis intervention, therapeutic counseling, legal advocacy and support. While it may seem unfathomable that domestic and sexual abuse happens in such a bucolic and affluent place as Hunterdon County, it does. Last year, 33 women and 38 children entered our safe house to find respite from abuse and to avoid being beaten or killed. Afraid, exhausted, and hopeful, they walked through our door with only the clothes on their backs, the shoes on their feet and one bag of keepsakes. Although the movement to end violence against women and girls has come a long way, we still have a long way to go before domestic abuse safe houses like ours are no longer a necessity. Beyond the scope of costly traditional services, we are taking steps to aid in the primary prevention of domestic and sexual abuse by building stronger partnerships with schools and youth-focused organizations. Our goal for 2013-2014 is to increase and enhance services for young victims of dating violence and sexual assault, and to provide bullying education, youth engagement and counseling so that some day, abuse is no longer a public health epidemic. By reaching youth early, and through proactive interventions and responses to abusive behaviors, we know we can STOP domestic and sexual abuse BEFORE someone is harmed. This second annual Red Shoe Luncheon & Fashion Show will bring SAFE in Hunterdon a few steps closer to achieving our vision. But, we can’t do it alone. We invite you to stay involved and ask that you continue to support our work long after today's event. You may never really appreciate how special a moment of empowerment is until you have walked a day in the shoes of a domestic abuse survivor. For all that BW NICE does to raise awareness and much-needed resources so there is a safe place for victims and survivors to find hope in this community, my heartfelt thanks. In sincere gratitude, Donna Bartos, Executive Director 8 Free Confidential Programs and Services for Victims and Survivors SAFE in Hunterdon seeks to empower victims and survivors in an attempt to break the cycle of violence. Those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault have access to a 24hour hotline, crisis intervention teams, safe house, transitional housing, legal advocacy, individual and group counseling, community education and PALS, a unique children’s art therapy program. We deliver critical support services to the many families in our communities that have experienced violence in their lives. We believe that survivors are the experts on their own lives and safety. Our programs focus on empowering individuals to make their own decisions, rather than having critical choices made for them. Several programs and teams have been developed to ensure that we successfully meet our goal of providing safety, shelter, advocacy and support to all those in need. OUR MISSION - To empower adult and child survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, while collaborating with our community to prevent violence and create positive social change. 9 Sophie Shor Woman of theYear 2 • 0 • 1 • 3 “Good that can be done in the community always comes back to you in many ways.” – Sophie Shor Since the late 1980’s, Sophie Shor and Roman Jewelers have had a history of supporting the community and local charities. It stems from Sophie’s belief that the good that can be done comes back two-fold - in business and in life. Sophie Shor is Vice President and Co-owner of Roman Jewelers. The store has two locations, in Bridgewater and Flemington, New Jersey, and has been in business for almost 25 years. Since immigrating to the United States in 1980 from Russia, the Shor family has felt a strong sense of community. They have continually and graciously given back to the community. Sophie Shor is currently on the boards of the Hunterdon Medical Center Foundation and the Hunterdon Healthcare System. She has supported countless local charities over the years including Safe in Hunterdon, the Hunterdon County YMCA, Anderson 10 House, and Woodlands Wildlife Refuge. Sophie serves as an advisor to the Flemington Business Improvement District while Roman Jewelers was the main sponsor of the Hunterdon Holiday Parade in 2012. The family also contributes to educational programs around the state. She was named “2009 Woman Business and Community Leader” by the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce. In 2010, Sophie and Roman Shor were recognized by the Hunterdon County YMCA for the philanthropy and commitment to the community. At the event, Congressman Leonard Lance presented the couple with a special U.S. Congress Award. BW NICE is thrilled to honor Sophie Shor as the 2013 Business Woman of the Year. Sophie’s sustained devotion to the community is something we are happy to celebrate. Monique Spicer The Star Maker School of the Performing Arts We celebrate Sophie Shor by way of sharing… “I have known Sophie for twenty five years as both a congregant, as a member of the Flemington Jewish Community Center and as a friend. I have been with her through the best of times and the worst of times and I can say without hesitation that she is a woman of enormous strength, of honesty and integrity, who has been a source of unfailing support to my community, synagogue and me.” – Rabbi Evan Jaffe 46 Old Hwy 22 / Route 173 Clinton, NJ 08809 Thank you for your dedicated effort to the Red Shoe Fashion Show. It is greatly appreciated! Gail Patterson Independent Associate Group Benefits Specialist “I have the utmost admiration for Sophie for both her professional and personal successes.
