Memorable and pleasurable experiences help us to relax and forget for a while the stresses of everyday life. Many visitors to the Toskana Therme Bad Sulza experience stress on a daily basis, whether at work or in the home, more people are turning to places where they can de-stress and regenerate. The Toska-naworld Group provides an oases of relaxation and well-being where people can experience relaxation and discover new aquatic sensations such as floating in thermal water and enjoy-ing sound, colour and light with features of LIQUID SOUND®. This contemporary multimedia bathing experience was con-ceived and developed by media artist and Toskanaworld Cul-tural Director, Micky Remann. Right from the outset, the construction and operating concept of the Toskana Therme Bad Sulza, designed by Ollertz, incorporated sustainability concerns and ecologically friendly materials such as locally sourced wood and eco friendly tile surfaces. Considerations extended beyond closely analysing and optimising energy consumption to include social responsibility and conservation of the environment. The intention to create a “Green Spa” category has been recognized through the award of Green Globe Certifica-tion. At the “Internationale Tourismusmesse Berlin” in 2010 the Toskana Therme Bad Sulza was distinguished as the first thermal baths to be awarded the respected “Green Globe” quality label. The architectural concept of the Toskana Therme Bad Sulza is inspired by forms of nature. The building’s shape echoes natural forms and natural materials have been used wherever possible. The vaulted form of the roof of the Toskana Therme derives from that of a suspended net in equilibrium and was developed using modern computer engineering, enabling the roof to sustain loads almost exclusively through compression forces. A Green Globe Case Study The roof is also the most characteristic element of the architecture and is clad with a double layer of coniferous timber boarding and perforated by arched openings in its perimeter which curve and bow in two directions. The roof is supported by laminated timber ribs that are in turn borne by reinforced concrete abutments and columns. A particular highlight is the sauna of the future. The combination of efficient insulation with rooftop greening creates an optimal climatic construction. The construction process successfully took into account both sustainability aspects as well as the need to reduce energy consumption. Lighting selections at Toskana Therme Bad Sulza mainly consists of using efficient and energy-saving LED’s. The Toskana Therme creates a magical atmosphere of well being where the guests can relax with a good conscience. The underfloor heating of the sauna of the future is powered by a geothermal energy collector and a heat pump. The collector is arranged horizontally over an area of 2800 m² at a depth of 130 cm beneath the earth’s surface. A primary requisite for the economic use of geothermal energy from rocks or water-saturated sediments is the high thermal conductivity of the subsoil. A mixture of water and anti-freeze circulates through the collector array, accumulating warmth from the earth and passing it to the heat pump. Modern heat pump systems employ materials that do not pollute ground water or produce emissions harmful to the ozone layer.
