Popkomm, one of Europe’s most
important music conferences,
will take place from 8 - 10 October in Berlin. Buma Cultuur will
be representing the Netherlands
at the dutchsound.nl stand, as
we do every year, supported by
SENA Performers. At least 100
Dutch professionals from over
40 companies will join us at the
dutchsound.nl stand. The Dutch
music industry will be broadly
represented.
Buma Cultuur will again showcase a number of Dutch acts at
the conference this year, working
with Music Center the Netherlands, under the name of
musicXport.nl. The 2008 programme of musicXport.nl showcases several Dutch acts that
represent the high quality of
Dutch music today. First off,
Racoon will play their brand of
pop on Wednesday 8 October.
The same day will feature a
Dutch Belgium showcase with
zZz (NL), Voicst (NL), Sharko (BE)
and Mintzkov (BE). On Thursday
9 October Headlife, The Bloody
Honkies and Moke will represent
the rock side of the Dutch
musical spectrum.
Last but not least, on Friday
La Melodia will showcase their
soulful yet raw hiphop music.

The Netherlands
and Belgium unite
We’re bringing together some exciting music scenes from the
Netherlands and Belgium and showcase them at Popkomm this
year. Working with Flanders Music Centre, musicXport.nl will
organise a showcase at the Maschinenhaus in the Kulturbrauerei on Wednesday 8 October. Voicst and zZz will represent the
Netherlands, Mintzkov and Sharko will rock for Belgium.
For more information about this showcase go to:
www.BE-NL-music.com.
The Bloody Honkies
The Bloody Honkies were founded in late 2005 in Barlo, a
small village in the far east of Holland. A show at EuroSonic
Noorderslag 2007 brought them a record deal and they released their debut album The Gospel Of The Bloody Honkies
last year.
The band consists of vocals-and-dance man Lawrence Mul,
guitarist Wout Kemkens, drummer Hooky and bass player
Clemens Mul. They play rock-’n’-roll and they play it loud.
They have little respect for conventions, and play their type of
rock: swingin’, energetic, and raw.
Club shows, festivals and support acts quickly followed
their notorious Noorderslag gig. At one gig, they played with
compatriots Peter Pan Speedrock and The Spades, as well as
Wolfmother, The Datsuns and the legendary Status Quo.

Headlife
This band offers powerful performances, sticky songs, heavy
guitar riffs and straight from the heart vocals. A five-man formation, they are one of the most promising rock bands from The
Hague at present. The band is: Slo (vocals), Daan (guitar, backing
vocals), Roach (guitar), Francis (bass) and Jelger (drums). They
play a tough mixture of rock and pop; raging crowds are common
at their live shows.
Headlife have already played a lot of festivals and stages all over
the Netherlands. In the summer of 2007 they presented their first
mini-EP, Man’s Ruin, a touching release, and one people had high
expectations about. One song, Foolish, has been played a lot on
Dutch local radio stations. Headlife recently recorded their new
single, Just for You, and their first album is expected early 2009.
This band is ready for a European tour.

zZz
zZz is one helluva sleazy steamin’
locomotive, barrelling out of Amsterdam. Organ, drums and vocals
are all this duo need to serve up
a Molotov cocktail of psychedelic
electro wave, garage soul and
dirty rock & roll. zZz first got going
eight years ago, at the turn of the
century, when roomies Björn Ottenheim and Daan Schinkel started
making music in their basement,
using only a simple drum kit and
an old $50 church organ. Within
a week they had composed five
songs and were invited to play at
the party of an infamous Dutch
smuggler, where the Sound of zZz
was born. From then on zZz built
up a notorious live reputation and
the show requests came flowing
in. Invitations by the likes of Fatboy Slim (for a tour in Japan),
Juliette & The Licks, Jarvis Cocker, Franz Ferdinand and The
Happy Mondays – to name but a few – were followed by a
string of dates at major European Festivals (Glastonbury,
Benicassim, Les Eurockéennes, Pukkelpop, Lowlands, Arezzo
Wave, among others). The release of their album The Sound
Of zZz was followed by some extensive club touring throughout Europe and the USA. The next album is due out in October
on ANTI Records.
Racoon
Racoon was founded in 1997 by Bart van der Weide (vocals) and Dennis Huige (guitarist). They were joined several months later by Stefan
de Kroon (bass) and Paul Bukkens (drums). In January 2000 they
released their debut album, Till Monkeys Fly. Their single, Feel Like Flying, was a mega hit on Dutch national radio stations. After that, Racoon
played the Parkpop and Lowlands festivals. The band headed into the studio to record a new album in the summer of 2001. Here We Go,
Stereo! was well received by press and public. Amazingly, however, Sony decided to terminate their contract in 2002. The band didn’t give
up though. Working in close cooperation with one of their very first fans, producer Michel Schoots (Urban Dance Squad), they recorded
the Another Day album in 2004, under their own management. This album set in motion their monster hit, Love You More in 2005, and the
album went platinum. The band has been quickly recognised as one of the most successful Dutch bands today, and Racoon’s club tour in
2005 sold out. They had a successful festival season in 2006.
In 2007 Another Day was released in the United States and Canada, followed by their first ever American tour. This year they released
their latest album, their fourth: Before You Leave.
Voicst
Photo Cindy Heijnen
Voicst, the rock trio from Amsterdam, has quickly established a reputation as one
of the most innovative, exciting and intense bands in Europe. The band, Tjeerd
Bomhof (guitar, vocals), Sven Woodside (bass, vocals) and Joppe Molenaar (drums,
samples) recorded debut album 11-11 in New York with producer and Girls Against
Boys bass player Eli Janney. Their debut album brought them instant success,
and singles from the album were quickly picked up and used for commercials
(Heineken) and TV shows (One Tree Hill). The band have a habit of relentless touring, and they have spent time on the road with Nada Surf, Bettie Serveert, Tenacious D, Juliette & the Licks, The Presidents of the United States of America and
The Bravery.
In 2007 the band came with a remarkable second album, which they called A Tale
Of Two Devils. The album was produced by Peter Katis (Interpol, The National) and
Rutger Hoedemaeker of Dutch electro pop output About. On May 30, 2008 Voicst
was voted one of the best bands at Pinkpop, the biggest festival in the country.

Miss Djax Photo Krijn van Noordwijk
Miss Djax returned to dj-íng and producing in 2004 after several years of radio silence. She’d gone
from working in a record shop to running the successful and respected Djax labels over the 15 years
before. Her flagship, Djax-Up-Beats, is a legendary name in techno. Miss Djax’s own work evolved from
Chicago and acid into hard techno. Legendary gabber pioneers Human Resource contributed to the
track on this CD, which will be the bonus track for her upcoming album, Inferno
Nobody Beats The Drum Photo Leon Hendrickx
Nobody Beats The Drum certainly take their time: after
winning the Dance Music award at the Grote Prijs van
Nederland in 2003, it took five years for the trio to finish
and release their debut album Beats Work. One reason is
no doubt the fact that its members play in other bands,
like Zuco 103 and C-mon & Kypski. The band combines the
sound of hip hop and breaks with electro and rock. They
run their own label and are very focused on playing live.
Here, two of Holland’s biggest musical export products are
brought together on one track. It’s an unlikely combination, but it
works: the world’s number one DJ Armin van Buuren with Sharon
den Adel, vocalist of award-winning, million-selling goth metal
band Within Temptation. The track, a mix of breakbeat and electro
styles and Armin’s usual trance sound, is the second single
from his Imagine album on Armada Records. The EP comes with
remixes from Blizzard and Richard Durand.
TJ Kong & Nuno
dos Santos
TJ Kong and Nuno dos Santos
started working as a production
team with Circus Bells for Compost Records last year. The track
was made as a Brazilian version
of Robert Armani’s classic. After
Pete Tong made it an essential tune, it became a big hit.
Portuguese-born Dos Santos is
a DJ and graphic designer, Kong
is an alter ego of Erwin van Moll
a.k.a. Max 404 and as one half
of Clashing Egos. The duo have
also worked with Robert Owens,
and released Dropout on the bside of the Tranentrekker EP on
Compost Black.
Marcella
Marcella is another female DJ who started producing tracks in 2005.
Her track, Stabbing Sally,
became a big house hit.
After she won the Toolroom Remix competition
in that same year, remix
requests started coming
in too. With Virgil van
Leeuwaarde she is part
of Unisex Inc., a production duo known from the
Bouncing Nipples track.
Marcella has her own
monthly house night in
Amsterdam. Inside, her
latest single, is on Terminal 4 Records.

Belgium focus for
EuroSonic Noorderslag 2009
The European Music Conference and Showcase
Festival brings Belgian music to the forefront.
The 2009 edition of EuroSonic Noorderslag will
take place on 15, 16 and 17
January in the Dutch city of
Groningen. This year the focus will be on Belgian music
talent and on the Belgian
music industry. The festival
will comprise the EuroSonic
Noorderslag festivals and
conference, and over 250
international bands and acts
will be performing that weekend. Around 2,500 music
business professionals are
expected to attend.
“With its location in the
heart of Europe, Belgium is a
melting pot of cultural influences where bands such as
Front 242 and TC Matic were
first inspired to create their
unique sound,” says Peter
Smidt, creative director of
EuroSonic Noorderslag and
project manager of
Buma Cultuur. “Many
bands followed and
gained international
respect: dEUS, Soulwax,
Girls in Hawaii and Ghinzu,
to name only a few. Belgium
has a vibrant live music
scene with lots of great venues, clubs and festivals. Rock
Werchter, of course, is recognized as the best festival in
the world. Aside from shows
by several Belgian bands
and acts, the focus of panels
and meetings during the
conference will be on doing
business with Belgium.”
Shows by European artists keeps on
growing every year

Creamfields
Creamfields, the most popular dance festival of the UK,
celebrated its 10-year anniversary on August 23 and 24. As well as
many international headliners, there was a special tent with
Dutch DJs. This new project, Go Dutch, was presented by
musicXport.nl and supported by the Amsterdam Dance Event,
Buma Cultuur, 1Management, Sneakerz MUZIK, Extrema Music,
One Day and the British MN2S. Acts such as Bart B More, Benny
Rodrigues, Nuno dos Santos, Warren Fellow, Darko Esser,
Groovenatics, Baggi Begovic and Oliver Twizt showed what
Holland has to offer when it comes to dance and electronic music.
After their Creamfields gig, Go Dutch will tour clubs and festivals
around the world. First up in October this year is a home gig at the
Amsterdam Dance Event, on Saturday 25 October in Panama.

is too. Artists we represent are: Zuco 103,
Benny Sings, Izaline Calister, New Cool Collective, Wouter Hamel, Giovanca, Steye and
Benjamin Herman.
