Tourists know
The ADE has continued to rise as a name on the international electronic
music calendar. In 2005, well over 12.000 people travelled to Amsterdam to visit ADE shows. ‘With the increased mobility from people in
Europe, it’s fairly easy to take a plane from London or Berlin’, says ADE
general manager Richard Zijlma: ‘With the publicity we’ve had in Germany and the UK in particular, we’re expecting a very significant rise in
the amount of punters coming over - at least 25.000.’

RACOON
PETER PAN SPEEDROCK
Sometimes justice does exist. At least, that’s what you think when you hear that Racoon was dropped by
their record label after two fine releases which sold quite well, but not enough for their major label. The band
decided not to give up and concentrated on writing new songs, and it paid off, as the album ‘ Another Day’
proved. With the romantic and soothing single Love You More Racoon made a huge comeback and became
more successful than ever before, resulting in massive album sales and a place on the main stage of Holland’s
biggest music festival Pinkpop. Just wait until the rest of the world discovers them…

You gotta say yes to another excess! Peter Pan Speedrock certainly do.
Hailing from Eindhoven (Rock City), this powerhouse of a trio play super-fast maximum rock’n’roll. They’ve been compared to bands such as
Nashville Pussy, Motorhead, The Hellacopters, and Gluecifer, but Peter
Pan Speedrock force others to play by their rules. The group is known
for their spectacular live shows but for your daily dose of rock excess
you can pick up their latest album Spread Eagle, a beast of an album.

KRAAK & SMAAK
When the lads across the Channel are enthousiastic about
something not-British, it’s time
to take notice. The Hague’s
Kraak & Smaak got the buzz going with their first 12”’s and is
a true favourite of dance/funklovers across Europe, thanks
to their sizzling debutalbum
Boogie Angst. The trio is even
more energetic onstage, where
they are often accompanied by a
horn section and various guests,
including a breakdancer and DJ.
The English have already nicknamed the trio Crack & Smack,
and that tells also something
about the addictiveness of this
band.

BLUES BROTHER CASTRO
LEGOWELT
Blues Brother Castro has often been called the hardest working band in
Holland. They recently released their first single and video for the song
Drunken Boy off the Money Maker Me-album. Having played across
Europe and the US on various occasions BBC is emerging on the international music-scene. No wonder they named their second album
‘Fun’, because they are certainly having a lot of it-taking their Pixieslike sound with them on the way.

THE GATHERING
What’s so great about Dutch electronic music? You mean, except for
the original ideas, the high quality level and the international recognition? It’s the humour! What to think about Legowelt tracks like Stumvogel or Total Pussy Control? Exactly. Danny Wolfers is a one of a kind
producer and has been releasing music on various formats and under
various names ever since the early nineties, and keeps on doing so
under much praise. If you’re in for something truly unique, then check
out Legowelt.

A decade ago the Gathering pioneered the currently popular Goth trend in
the Netherlands. Singer Anneke van Giersbergen became the role model
of a legion of similar bands. Since then, the band has moved into ‘trip
rock’ territory, as demonstrated at Glastonbury 2003 or on their various
tours throughout Mexico. While Within Temptation may be better known
nowadays, it’s safe to say that they wouldn’t exist in the way they currently
do without The Gathering. The band from Oss has left the goth-path to
explore unknown territories and are eager to take you with them.

STUURBAARD BAKKEBAARD
GEM
Calexico meets Zita Swoon, but then in an incomparable style that defies
categorizing. From 1996, they played all over Europe, including support
in 2004 for Norway’s Kaisers Orchestra, and did a South African tour. The
album Whistle Dixie is released in 2005, while Stuurbaard Bakkebaard
also did support shows in Holland for G-Love & Special Sauce and got
invited to the Popup Musikmesse in Leipzig. www.stuurbaardbakkebaard.nl
KREZIP
Krezip were the youngest band to ever play Holland’s Pinkpop festival
in 2000. Their debut album topped the Dutch album chart and went
triple platinum. They won a Zilveren Harp, an Edison award and several
TMF Awards, played festivals like Noorder-slag, Lowlands, Werchter
and Pinkpop. Krezip also toured Germany twice and did support slots
for Bon Jovi and Sheryl Crow in Holland, Germany and France. In 2003
the band did an acoustic tour, released on CD and DVD. Following the
recording of third album What Are You Waiting For (Sony/BMG), the
band recently sold out Columbia Fritz in Berlin several weeks before
the show. www.krezip.com
www.dutchsound.nl | september 2006
‘Tell Me What’s New’ is the call to arms of one of
Holland’s most exciting new bands. Initially making
their appearance on a Dutch talent sampler (sound
familiar?!!), 2004 has been a hell of a year for this
five-piece. At times, it seems like singer Maurits
Westerik would find himself in a severe crisis if he
didn’t front a rock ‘n’ roll band. Taking equal parts
out of the book Julian and the book Liam, he possesses the brawn, the swagger, and Gem might
just pull it off. The sound? Think Libertines, thing
Strokes, think power! The Dutch aren’t known as a
country with experience when it comes to the phe-
nomenon of hype, but Gem might just prove them
wrong with their intriguing melodies. ‘Tonight’ is
an Eighties-influenced powerhouse of a song, and
it’ll have you singing along in a heartbeat. Gem have
recently performed at the CMJ Seminar, at PopKomm, Haldern Pop, and at Aberdeen’s Go North
conference. The band from Utrecht have been hailed
as a breath of fresh air and with their second album
‘Escapades’ have proven they are one of the finest
bands of today’s rockscene.

DUTCH MUSIC WITH VISIONS
A special ‘Neue Hollandische Welle’ CD now accompanies the September issue of Visions magazine in
Germany. Presenting some of the most prolific bands
from the Netherlands, NHW now sees its third edition
and is also handed out at the Dutch stand at Popkomm
and at some of the shows. The tracklisting:

2. Anouk
> More Than You Deserve
EMI Music Netherlands
[email protected]
www.anouk.com
Born in The Hague in 1975, Anouk is truly a Dutch diva. Known for her explosive live performances, on stage she’s a maelstrom of blonde hair and
attitude easily managing to out-rock her male band. Right from the start her
powerful voice and matching personality made people sit up and take notice.
Her first serious steps on the musical ladder started back in 1996, when
she was invited to support fellow rock legends Golden Earring. 1997 sees
the release of her debut single ‘Nobody’s Wife’ which goes platinum in
Holland, Sweden and Norway. From then on it’s straight to the top; the
following years she clocks up numerous awards and accolades including
an Edison for Best National Singer, TMF Awards, performances at major
European festivals and a Golden Harp in 2003. ‘Hotel New York’, her latest album released in 2004, sees the singer explore reggae, funk and soul
styles. Spawning a string of hit singles, the album went gold after just one
week. It seems the golden girl can do no wrong. No wonder her fellow
musician husband, Postman asked her to sing almost all of the backing
vocals on his reggae/rap album ‘Green’.
4. Green Lizard
> Walk over Water
Endewerf Management | [email protected] | www.green-lizard.com
Green Lizard is a well established Dutch band. After having their first EP produced by Jack Endino, they made two
albums for Sony Music and toured all over the world for bigger and bigger audiences. They played the Vans World
Tour in 2003/2004, and after that opened for bands like The Rasmus and Living Colour. ‘Las Armas Del Silencio’
is the name of their third album and was mixed by Clif Norrell (No Doubt, Faith No More) and released by I Scream
Records. They are already popular in France and also played at this year’s Sziget Festival.

6. Johan
> She’s Got A Way With Men
Excelsior Recordings | [email protected] | www.johan4all.com
One of Netherlands’ best secrets is Johan, the band of singer/songwriter Jacco de Greeuw. Many Dutch music
lovers cheered when they heard Johan was to release a new album this year, THX JHN. Jacco de Greeuw
knows the less sunny side of life, which enables him to write perfect popsongs with a melancholy touch, but
also prevents him from releasing them too often which resulted in five long years between the second album
Pergola and THX JHN and between the debut and Pergola. The self titled debut album even got a release in
the US, but not in Argentina. Reason enough for an Argentinian fan to travel more than 10.000 miles to see
her favourite band live. Fortunately you don’t have to travel that far, as Johan is more than happy to undertake
on a European trek.

9. Pete Philly & Perquisite
> Mellow
Epitaph Europe | [email protected] | www.ourmindstate.com
Mindstate, the debut album by Pete Philly and Perquisite, takes you back to the glory days when hip hop MCs
made the crowd dance, and when hip hop lyrics used to make people think. As a live band with bass, saxophone and cello, they’ve toured Europe with Kanye West, Leela James, Dizzee Rascal and Saian Supa Crew,
and rocked crowds at festivals such as North Sea Jazz, Lowlands and Capetown Jazz. Following the release
of Mindstate in Europe and Japan in 2005, the album was also released in America, Canada and Australia in
May 2006 on the ANTI label, home to artists such as Tom Waits, Blackalicious and Michael Franti. The duo is
already planning a second album, but will have to wait until the attention for Mindstate has cooled somewhat
first. Therefore, expect that album sometime around 2015…
10. Postman
> Firing
EMI Music Netherlands | [email protected] | www.postman-online.com
Postman is Remon Stotijn, a producer/rapper from Rotterdam. With his debut album Documents, Stotijn scored
four hit singles and the best-selling Dutch hiphop album of all time. With a love for both reggae and hiphop
the music of Postman is an amazing blend of lyrical depth and original music. Although Postman used to be a
trio under the name of Postmen, the impetus behind the band was clearly Stotijn as can be heard on Green, his
fourth album.

www.ilsedelange.com
The Netherlands have their own little piece of Nashville country
and she goes by the name of Ilse de Lange. At the age of 21, Ilse got
to record an album in Nashville and the Dutch woke up: they had a
country star in their midst. World Of Hurt, her much acclaimed debut
album, didn’t pass by unnoticed. A whopping 450.000 albums were
sold, meaning 1 in 32 Dutchies have a copy at home. She got to play
every big venue and festival, something she continued while releasing
the follow up 4 albums, and she also picked up an Edison (the Dutch
equivalent of a Grammy), for her fourth album Clean Up along the way.
Her latest album The Great Escape reached number 1 in the national
charts. Not bad for a girl who used to work in a shoe store, is it?

Underground was released on June 3 in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Arling & Cameron
have released several influential albums, including Music for Imaginary Films, for which they received the
most important music prize in the Netherlands, the Popprijs. The highly danceable and upbeat music of Arling
& Cameron has been used in lots of movies, series and commercials (Austin Powers, Sopranos, Audi, among
others) and is known around the world. It won’t take long before Hi Fi Underground follows that example.
17. Face Tomorrow

you knew about Goth so far grown into epic proportions. Let Simone Simons be your siren, but don’t be fooled by her looks. This lady

while her band knows how to back her up with a powerful sound.
