DIRECTOR’S STATMENT
”Men of broader intellect know that there is no sharp distinction between the real and unreal”
H.P. Lovecraft, The Tomb (1917)
Every apartment has a past…
The central themes in Sensoria are loneliness and loss. It’s about losing someone or something you love.
About trying to deal with that loss and moving on. At the same time the film is about belonging and finding
once place in life.
Caroline Menard is going through a tough patch in life. She is lonely, vulnerable and working on getting her
life puzzle back in the right order. All the characters in Sensoria have lost something or someone; Caroline
lost her child in a miscarriage and as a result lost the family she was trying to build. My has lost her parents
and grandmother. Caroline’s neighbours all live alone and everything is not as it seems. The whole
apartment building is in some kind of melancholic limbo with dark secrets.
Caroline’s new apartment has a dark past which manifests itself as soon as Caroline has moved in. There is
someone there, who just as Caroline, is searching for something… The apartment as well as the house are
central characters in the story and like My makes up the external threat towards Caroline’s world.
The look, tone and design of Sensoria is very important to me. Some of the films we had as reference
during the development were; The Others, Rosemary’s Baby, Repulsion, The Tenant, The Conjuring,
Insidious, A Tale of Two Sisters, Paranormal Activity, Sisters and Dark Water to name but a few. Since most
of my crew never worked with genre film, I made it a requirement to watch these and many other films as
homework before starting pre-production.
Sensoria has three visual stages: the flashback with My’s backstory, where we start the film, and which then
comes back in the third act and has a vintage 80’s feel and look. This part of the film takes place in the early
eighties. Then we have the films main storyline with Caroline, the neighbours and the apartment/house
which goes more in a colored grayscale with a very subtle palette. Finally the third stage of the film, where
Caroline is in a limbo-like world, the “nether-world” between life and death, this place has an undefined,
ambient and cold feeling to it and is more or less monochrome.
Throughout the film we increase Caroline’s isolation from the world, her paranoia and her fears as she
becomes aware oft what is happening around her. Is it all in her head? Or is she caught in a nightmare…
Caroline’s only connection to the world outside her apartment is her friend Emma, whom represents a
reflection of who Caroline is, but also who she could have been, should have been or would have been if
her life puzzle would have been laid out correctly. The interaction between Caroline and Emma is essential
as is the relationship between Caroline and My.
I wanted to make a genre film with strong and interesting characters, focusing on a woman with inner
strength, but who is also very vulnerable, lonely and multilayered. A film that looks at how our senses and
emotions sometimes gets the better of us and takes us to a dark place which exists within all of us, and
which makes it possible for us to see what not everyone sees… it makes us more a-tune and sensible to
what is around us.
Sensoria is a small and contained story, written intentionally with that in mind, so that we could produce it
with small means and still keep the integrity of the characters, and the story. I hope you’ll like it.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
From Script to Screen
SENSORIA was shot during 13 days in November of 2014 in Malmo, Sweden.
Director/Writer/Producer Christian Hallman and his writing partner Måns F.G. Thunberg
set out to write Sensoria in the Spring of 2013, at the time aiming to shoot the film in
January of 2014.
The two of them had written a couple of screenplays in English together which almost
made it into production, but in the end didn't happen due to financing. So they decided
to write something in Swedish for the first time and also writing it in a manner so they
could realize the film with very small means and actually produce the film independently
- so there the first seed for Sensoria was planted. The first draft for Sensoria was
finished in April 2013, Christian spent the better part of the summer/fall 2013 re-writing
it and bouncing it back and forth between him and Måns. The final draft was locked on
December 6th, 2013.
We are very much in sync when we write together, Christian Hallman says. Måns and I
have the same references, and the same take on story and structure, with that said
though we have very different likes and dislikes. This makes a good dynamic. Our
approach is different but we complement each other in a really good way, I think that is
why it works so good. One fun thing when we write is that we often act out the parts in
the script in his or my apartment, much to our neighbours amusement.
We started casting the film in September 2013. Most of the supporting cast are actors
whom Christian had worked with before in some capacity on other productions. Some of
the parts were written with these actors in mind or actors similar in style. The hardest
parts to cast was Sensoria’s two leading lady’s Caroline and My.
The difficulty with casting My, the little girl, is first off the age of course and also to find
someone that age who can actually act and carry a film in the scenes where she is
present. She also had to be both sweet and charming but also have a darker side to her.
After searching for a few months we finally found Norah Andersen. She didn’t have any
acting experience but she had all the qualities we were looking for in My.
There were various actresses whom Christian had in mind for Caroline. In November
2013 the part was cast and we moved forward. But then in December 2013 things
started to fall apart. We didn’t really get the financing we had hoped for, and was
looking at a much tighter cash budget then Christian had intended.
Also it proved to be very difficult to find the right location for the film. It had to be an
empty apartment… and there aren’t that many empty apartments in the town we shot
the film. Also the apartment had to have the right “look” and aesthetics which Christian
and his Production Designer was looking for.
There were also other things, which in the end led Christian to make the call and push
the production to November 2014. At the time it was kind of a let down on many levels.
Page !6 of 36
However this “push forward” made it possible for Christian to have more time to
prepare the film, find the additional funding needed and more importantly find the right
location. It also gave Christian almost one full year to work with Norah Andersen,
reading lines with her, and getting her ready to portray the character My.
Christian also gave Norah a small part in a Swedish comedy TV series on which he was a
First Assistant Director to see how she would perform amongst other actors and with a
film crew and cameras around her. And it worked out fine.
In the midst of this it was decided to re-cast the part of Caroline. So in the spring of
2014 Christian set out to look for an actress to tackle the lead in SENSORIA.
A lot of actresses showed an interest among them Lanna Olsson. Christian and Lanna
met, talked about the script, the character of Caroline and the world of Sensoria.
Through these meetings and discussions Christian saw that he could make Sensoria
work with Lanna playing Caroline.
It was also important that whoever played Caroline had chemistry with Norah and with
the Alida Morberg who plays Emma, so there were two casting sessions before the final
decision was made, one in Malmo with Norah and one more unofficial in Stockholm with
Alida. It worked out great and Lanna was cast as Caroline.
From August 1st 2014 pre production was in full go and everything was in line for
shooting to start on November 12 except once again we didn't have an apartment to
film in. But we had to move forward not to loose momentum, so it was a big gamble. To
make a very long story short we finally got a hold of an apartment on October 30th, two
weeks before starting to film. An apartment which worked for the films aesthetics, but
which also was empty, we could use it for the full month of November for art
department prep, rehearsals, filming and then returning it back to normal.
With a shooting schedule of 13 days. The pace of filming was very fast. The production
averaged between 45 and 60 set ups a day. Christian knew that to make the film in that
short amount of time, they needed to be able to work fast and efficient. One way of
doing that was to minimise the time for setting up each scene, and as such it was
decided early on to more or less only use practicals as the source for lighting. In the
end, besides the practicals, the film ended up being shot with only adding three small
LED panels and two Kino flows that could easily be moved around on set as needed.
Christian also knew that in order to keep the quick pace needed it was important that
he had every shot in the film in his head. All his experience as a First Assistant Director
came in to play here and also the fact that he wrote the script with Måns helped, and it
was easy for him to change things on the fly, as was needed many times.
There was never really any doubt from Christian in regards to what the scene or the shot
was. He did a quick blocking with the actors and then we went straight to one camera
rehearsal and sometimes we shot the rehearsal as a first take. Every evening a new floor
plan with all the next days camera angels were drawn up.
Page !7 of 36
Story and Character is important to Christian and he often emphasised that to the crew.
He actually told all team members before even considering taking them on-board the
film that everything was sub-ordinate to story and character, meaning that if story and
character does not work, then we don’t have a film.
Christian had the visuals, the look and the compositions very clear in his head already
when writing SENSORIA. It is a very writer/director driven film. The concept of what the
film was and is, and the finished version is very much what his intention was.
Christian talked early on about making the photography interesting, by telling a story
with the camera, using subjective views, shooting from forced angles, making sure the
camera more or less always had movement. The same goes for the Production Design,
but we had to be smart about it since we didn’t have the budget nor the time, Miriam
Myrtell our Production Designer understood that, she and her team Anna Ericsson (Art
Director) and Emma Sofia Wahlberg (Set Decorator) did an amazing job.
Christian emphasised that he wanted the cinematography, art direction, music and
sound to work as characters in the film, just as important as the real characters. They
should move the story forward and give depth to the story. He gave everyone on the
project a lot of creative freedom within the universe he was creating. The real challenge
they had was the short production period and of course the budget.
During pre-production Christian made a few concept design images with the help of
illustrator Matthias Ransheim. They took a few key scenes and translated the written
words to something more visual. Matthias also made the first teaser poster for the film.
All these images played an important part in conceptualising the look and tone of
SENSORIA and also helped when talking with actors, crew members and financiers, it
gave the project some validity and professionalism and it is always easier to relate to
something you can see. We didn’t use storyboards on Sensoria, however Christian was
adamant on doing floor plans and he himself drew up every single camera angle which is
in the film.
We shot SENSORIA on a Panasonic GH4 joint decision from Janssen and Christian. The
main reason for choosing that camera was that we wanted a small rigg that we could
work fast with to keep the pace with us on the set. Christian also wanted to shoot in a
format which he could start editing directly more or less and not spend time on
“development” or transcoding the material. From a technical stand point we wanted
two things primarily which was challenging at first; 1 to shoot with time code synced
sound to make the post production flow easier, and 2 to shoot 10bit 4K. At the time the
GH4 could only shoot 8bit 4K UHD internally.
We thought about using the Shogun from Atomos, however the release was pushed, so
we were looking around for solutions. So we decided to use the DMW-YAGHE from
Panasonic combined with the Q7 Recorder from Convergence Design. At the time in
October 2014, no one had done this, since the Q7 recorder did not work with the GH4,
but an update in the firmware and some costumed made cables made it work, and
Page !8 of 36
unlocked the possibility for us to shoot full 4K 24p in 10 bit and do synced time code. So
it all worked out really great.
Shooting wrapped November 27th after 616 official slates and about 100 un-slated
shots. Post production started right away.
We edited Sensoria on Premiere Pro on an iMac 5K with lots of HDDs. In total we shot
about 10 Terabyte of data, so just for the original material and back up we used over 20
Terabyte.
Christian spent the three weeks leading up to Christmas with first syncing up the films
sound and picture and then starting the first timeline assembly rough cut, going through
all the scenes and taking out the best takes and putting them on the timeline. Some
scenes were edited more thoroughly to see how they worked and if they would need to
re-shoot anything. On December 22nd they had a very rough timeline consisting of all
the films scenes, clocking in just under 6 hours.
In January Jorge Orellana came onboard to edit the film with Christian, they had
previously worked on one of Christian’s short films, as well as commercials and
corporate films. The way Christian approached the editing was to first edit the film as
the script was written to see that the story was there visually. From there though, he
went on to re-arrange the films structure together with his editor Jorge, to find the best
way of telling the story, a very creative process followed.
During the editing process, Christian had a few test screenings for a handpicked crowd
who had to fill out questionnaires and NDA’s. These were always rounded up by very
creative discussions and constructive suggestions.
The first cut of the film landed on 87 mins, and the final cut on 81 mins. Picture was
locked on April 12th 2015, so all in all including syncing and assembling somewhere
around 100 days were spent editing Sensoria. This was followed by fourteen weeks of
sound design, six weeks of digital compositing and visual effects and about two weeks
of color correction
The music in Sensoria is composed by Frank Ilfman. Christian came to know Frank
through mutual filmmaking friends Navot Papushado and Aharon Keshales who made
Rabies and Big Bad Wolves both of whom Frank scored the music for. Whilst on the
Jury in Sitges 2013 Christian and his jurors gave a special mention to the soundtrack for
Big Bad Wolves, Frank found out and tweeted a thanks. Christian then found out that
Frank lived in Sweden at the time, just a few blocks from him so when he came back
from Sitges they started to hang out and at a certain point Christian asked if he would
like to score Sensoria, Frank said yes and here we are.
A week prior to the Berlin Film Festival, Christian and his team released the first teaser
for SENSORIA, it premiered on Twitch, the premiere genrefilm site on the Internet, and
instantly became very talked about.
Page !9 of 36
Just prior to Cannes 108 Media came onboard as international sales agent as well as
handling North American distribution. Scandinavian distribution was secured for
Sensoria even before filming began through NjutaFilms.
In mid June 2015 the Trailer was released and got even more interest than the teaser.
The re-recording mixing was done in Malmo, Sweden in August of 2015 and Sensoria
was finished on September 4th, 2015 and had it’s world premiere at Fantastic Fest on
September 27th, 2015 and went on to play 11 film festivals in eight weeks leading up to
the end of 2015 and even more festivals during 2016.

Previous work as a Production designer includes ”För Kärleken” starring renowned American cult actor Danny Glover and ”Framily” an
independent drama shot entirely on location in Los Angeles.
”Sensoria” is Miriam´s fourth feature film as a production designer.
Miriam and Christian have a longterm professional relationship, and have
worked on both short films and commercials which Christian has
produced and/or directed. They always had an understanding that
Miriam would be the Production Designer on his feature film debut.
Miriam lives with her husband, two daughters, dog and cat in a house in
the outskirts of Malmö. Here she fulfils her passion for decorating as well
as collecting beautiful and odd things. Her interest in collecting
combined with her career in film and television has also resulted in
Southern Props – a 2000+ square meter prop house co-owned with
friends and colleagues.

Jorge Orellana (editor)
Jorge was born in Valparaiso, Chile and raised in Perstorp southern
Sweden. He shares his passion for film with the passion for spending
time with his family and friends.
With more than 12 years of experience as an editor, director and also
producer of corporate/image films, he started this journey in the film
industry when he decided to move back to Chile to study Film and
Audiovisual Communication at the University of Art and
Communications in Santiago de Chile. Here he was involved in all
aspects of filmmaking but focused on scriptwriting and directing.
Jorge stayed in Chile and worked for one of the largest post production
companies in South America, Chilefilms, where he ended up as a senior
editor. In 2006 Jorge decided to move back home to Malmo, Sweden, and
continue his career where he is currently working as a freelance editor
and director. His latest works include commercials, corporate films and
TV programs. Sensoria is Jorge’s first feature film in Sweden as an editor, and the first
time working on a genre film. Jorge has collaborated with Christian on one of his short films and also
various commercials and corporate films. They have a good creative
working relationship and Jorge has a perceptive way of understanding
Christians creative vision. Editing Sensoria has been a fun, intense and very enriching experience,
Jorge says.
Fernando Arce (sound designer/sound editor)
Fernando Arce is a San Francisco based sound designer and sound
editor. He was worked on a variety of projects ranging from video
games and commercials to documentaries and short films.
Sensoria is Fernando’s first feature film as a sound designer and sound
editor and the first collaboration with writer/director-producer Christian
Hallman.

Sandra Haraldsen (costume & make up designer)
Sandra Haraldsen is a costume and make up designer who grew up in
Växjö and now resides in Malmö, in southern Sweden.
She got her formal education at Tillskärarakedemin, a design and art
school in Malmo as well as at the International Make up School.
She has been working with film, TV and theatre as well as commercials
and corporate films.
Sandra has worked with Christian before on some of his short films and
also on commercials and corporate films which he has produced and/or
directed.
Christoffer Olovsson (Compositing & Visual Effects)
Christoffer is born outside Helsingborg in southern Sweden, and later
moved to Malmo where he now resides. He graduated from Hyper
Island, a Motion Creative Program, in 2014 and pursued a professional
career in visual effects
He’s been working with production companies Chimney and Bästa
Kompisar (Best Friends) in Malmö, mostly on commercials and corporate
films. He also worked with live broadcasting at Channel Copenhagen in
Copenhagen, Denmark.
Sensoria is Christoffer’s first time working on a feature film, a chance he
was given by Christian after they met at Chimney.
Page !19 of 36
Ted Karlsson (DI Colorist)
Ted Karlsson has been working professionally with film for more than 10
years, primarily as editor and DI Colorist.
His work include commercials, music promos, film and TV, living and
working at production companies from Reykjavík to San Francisco,
Copenhagen and Stockholm. He is prolific, fast and reliable, with over 500
projects completed, awards on the shelf and some in the wardrobe.
“Clients demand him and colleagues adore him. Some say he is awesome,
some even say he is the best…”. All joking aside though, Ted is an amazing
DI Colorist. Very professional and creative.
Christian had worked with Ted on commercials prior to Sensoria, and when
it came down to assigning a colorist to the film, there was no choice but to
make sure Ted was our man. Christian had a very clear vision as how the
visuals of Sensoria should look, Ted took that and over-delivered.
In the first 7 months of 2015 Ted had already color graded four Swedish
feature films, “Cirkus Imago En chans på miljonen”, “Det borde finnas
regler”, “Hitta bort” and “Sensoria”.
Samir Dounas (Re-Recording Mixer)
Samir Dounas is a sound mixer, sound editor, sound designer and rerecording mixer with his base in Malmö in the south of Sweden. He
works on a freelance basis as a sound technician but also as a
cinematographer, editor and spark. He is also a diver and an underwater
cinematographer with his own equipment and lights.
He’s been a sound mixer on Swedish TV-series “Wallander” as well as on
“Expedition: Robinson” the Swedish original version of “Survivor”.
Samir was the sound mixer and re-recording mixer on the Swedish genre
break-out film LFO directed by Antonio Tublén in 2013.
“Sensoria is an exciting project to work on, trying to create the
soundscape that Christian has envisioned for the film, a film where sound
plays such a big part”, says Samir.

Frank Ilfman (composer)
Frank Haim Ilfman (born March 18, 1970) is an Israeli/German composer
based in London, Spain and Los Angeles.
He studied trombone and piano at the Jaffa Conservatorium of Music in
Tel Aviv and as a young teenager was playing lead trombone with the Tel
Aviv Dixieland Band. The young composer became frustrated and bored
with the structured methods of the Conservatorium and was eventually
asked to leave for playing truant – Ilfman wanted to be more imaginative
with how he created music, so went it alone.
In 1984, during a visit to Berlin, Ilfman got introduced to German
composer Klaus Doldinger, who happened to be scoring “The
Neverending Story” at that time. A visit to the film’s recording sessions
made Ilfman fall deeper in love with the art of film music and commit
fully to his ambition.
He worked on his first television production, when he was just 17 years
old, with composer Jan Hammer on the acclaimed television series “The
Chancer”, starring Clive Owen, and since then has scored more than
forty films and numerous television shows.
Among his many talents is his ability to diagnose how music can best
contribute to a film; from brooding melancholy to playful joviality, his
work covers a wide spectrum of genres and has gained him much
respect in the field.
In 2008 Frank Ilfman was invited to join the The European Film Academy
(EFA) and The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)
Sensoria is the first collaboration between Frank and Christian.

PRESS & LINKS
PRESS QUOTES
“Best horror movie of the year hands down. Sensational psychological thriller that announces director Christian
Hallman as a filmmaker to watch.” - David Griffiths, Subculture Entertainment
“Certainly deserving to be described as one of the horror films of the years.” - David Griffiths, Subculture
Entertainment
“The films mash of Scandinavian horror and J-horror creepiness makes it a complete stand-out." - David Griffiths,
Subculture Entertainment
"Christian Hallman makes an auspicious debut with SENSORIA, a stylish, haunting, intelligent, supernatural thriller that
draws us in with its uncanny sense of the unexpected. It has more in common with the disturbing undercurrents of
REPULSION and THE TENANT, than with our contemporary found footage jump-scare ghost films.” - Brian Yuzna,
Director/Producer
“The true definition of atmospheric horror.” - Travis Brown, Horror Movies Uncut
“You are going to like what you see” - Andrew Mack, Twitch Film
“Shades of Polanski and The Sentinel abound” - Samuel Zimmerman, Shock Till You Drop
“Olsson is a remarkable actress.” - Alex Riviello, Birth.Movies.Death
“The performances are solid, the film looks good, and the score and sound design are great.” - Jason Coffman, Daily
Grindhouse
"Sensoria is a thoughtful “haunted house” film, telling both a conventional ghost story but also suggesting that we find
the ghosts we already carry with us.” - Dawn, Horror Homeroom
"The film is best, I think, in the resonance it thus creates between inner and outer worlds—suggesting that we do,
perhaps, conjure up the ghosts we need.” - Dawn, Horror Homeroom
”Sensoria” is restrained, heavily atmospheric, shows a mature story structure and flirts with the genre.” - Nicholas
Wennö, DN
“Superbly rendered ghost story... exacts goosebumps and chills upon you like a swarm of locusts!” - Philip Wilcox , Dark
Comedy Productions "Low key intelligent and metaphoric psychological piece… Great cinematography, fab music and riddled with brilliant
nods to genre cinema classics.” - Jason M, Letterboxed
“The audience will take a journey from the safety of their own world to the nightmare of the characters.” - Yenis
Monterrey, LA Splash
“Part haunted house film, part psychological thriller, SENSORIA combines the best of J-horror’s slow, creepy quietness
with a Scandinavian aspect that is altogether uniquely Hallman’s own." - MonsterFest
"With it’s constantly flowing, restless camerawork, Frank Ilfman’s splendid soundtrack and a solid craftsmanship, there’s
nothing left to do but tip your hat and say thanks, because this is the best Swedish horror film this year.” - Monsters of
Film
"Sensoria is an impressively restrained feature debut... A refreshingly mature film about loneliness and the spectre of
ageing, it features a touching and powerful central performance by Lanna Olsson.” - Abertoir Horror Film Festival
“Filled with slow dread accentuated by excellent performances, the film builds a razor-sharp atmosphere that engages
and intrigues throughout… the end result is a haunting ride through loss and madness carrying wide influences all the
way from M. R. James to Roman Polanski.” - Evrim Ersoy, Fantastic Fest
