THE SAN PEDRO SUN VISITOR GUIDE The Island Newspaper February 23, 2012 FREE Ambergris Caye, Belize Central America Vol. 22 #08 Lovin’ the Pub Personality at Lola’s!! Barrier Reef Drive, which many locals still refer to as “Front Street” is San Pedro’s showcase of community and commerce. Beginning on the south end with the Public Library, the San Pedro Belize Tourism Board office and the bustling San Pedro Roman Catholic School, and ending with the world renowned Phoenix Resort, what lies between the beginning and the end of this busy artery is a variety of businesses, gift shops, our beachside Central Park and of course restaurants and bars. When choosing a place to dine, or imbibe the day (or night) away, each location along the way offers their own unique personality. Depending on what you are in the mood for, be it beach front dining or bar stool banter, there is something for everyone along this popular street. If you are in search of a smaller, more intimate bar that has great ambience, food and drinks then Lola’s Pub & Grill, located on the northern end of Barrier Reef Drive is the place to be. Lola’s is the quintessential pub, with soft lighting, warm colors and barstool appeal. With individual tables along a wall-length bench, a few tables on the front sidewalk or just bellied-up to the bar, patrons enjoy a welcoming and comfortable scene. Boasting their status as a “karaoke-free zone”, the evenings at Lola’s are graced with the musical talents of the likes of acoustic guitar and vocalist extraordinaire Gino or the smokin’ guitar jams of Spencer with Zac on percussion. While sports fans can enjoy the games on three flatscreen TV’s, Lola’s maintains more of a pub personality than a sports bar. Lola’s Pub goes above and beyond the average beer and cocktail menu most serve on the island. Besides stocking an impressive selection of single-malt whiskeys and scotch and top-shelf spirits, they concoct killer margaritas, martinis and mojitos. Try a super chilled shot of Patron tequila with a “pickle back” (pickle juice) chaser or an ice cold shot of Jägermeister. They have a great menu of specialty drinks that include temptations such as the sweet coconut and chocolate “Chocolate Nut”, frozen strawberry daiquiris or super bold Bloody Marys. Of course man cannot live on libations alone, and the pub food served at Lola’s is the perfect complement to the cocktails, or vice versa! The bright flavors of their super fresh salsa, made with ripe tomatoes, lime juice, Continued on Page 3 226-2012 February 23, 2012 Visitor Guide Page 1 Where did you read your San Pedro Sun? Puzzle on Page 4 Page 6 Visitor Guide February 23, 2012 Wolfe’s Woofers by Dennis Wolfe One problem after the other “Good morning, Tommy,” I said, as I sat at his table. “Has Charlie been downstairs yet this morning?” “He just went upstairs for a couple of minutes. He said that if you came in to tell you he’ll be right down.” I ordered a cup of coffee from the waiter at Estel’s Restaurant and sat there with Tommy, enjoying the morning. Tommy held up a copy of The San Pedro Sun. “I was just reading your column from last week,” he said. “It makes me curious. Where do you get your stories?” “You just have to be a good listener,” I said. “Just sit here and listen for a few minutes. Good stories are all around us.” At the table next to us an older gentleman in his seventies said to another, “Bill, as the best man at your wedding, I just have to ask how the honeymoon went.” “I’ll tell you Harry, it was one problem after the other.” “What do you mean?” “When the time came, my new wife took off her wig and put it in the closet.” “She wears a wig?” “Yeah, but that’s no real problem. It turns out that her left hand; the one where she always wears a glove, is not real either. She put the hand in the closet.” “I can see where you might have a problem,” Harry said. “It got worse,” the groom said. “By the time she was ready she had taken out her glass eye and her false teeth, along with her fake eyelashes and stored them in the closet. Oh, yeah, by the way she has a wooden leg.” Harry said, “I see what you mean. One problem after the other.” “That wasn’t the biggest problem,” Bill said. “The biggest problem was trying to decide whether to spend our honeymoon on the bed or in the closet.” YOUR ISLAND SPECIALISTS!
