The day is not
over when the
sun goes down!
Regardless if you spent the day deep under
the ocean surface, or just reading a book
catching rays on the shore, when the sun
sets on “La Isla Bonita,” the night life is just
beginning.
From the punta rhythm of local bands to
the classic sounds of Barefoot Skinny, music
fills the air in downtown San Pedro.
A few dollars could win you plenty at the
World Famous Chicken Drop, or just wonder Barrier Reef Drive and barter with the
local vendors. Don’t go to bed too early when
so much awaits you at night in San Pedro!

Where did you read your San Pedro Sun?
While visiting her mother in Dallas, Texas, USA, January 7th
thru 10th, Lorraine McKenna had the opportunity to visit the Stock
Yards in Fort Worth. While there she had the chance to sit astride a
genuine ‘Texas Long Horn’. You can make out The San Pedro Sun
in her hand.
Where did you take your San Pedro Sun & Visitor Guide?
Take a photo of you and the paper and send it to us at:
[email protected]. Photos taken in unique and unusual places
are preferred. Be sure to identify who is in the photo and where the
photo was taken.
Greetings to my visiting friends
The Mayor, Councilors and people of San
Pedro Town take this opportunity to welcome you with open arms to this beautiful

May your stay here with us be a pleasant one, filled with enjoyment and delightful memories.
May you experience the best of what San
Pedro has to offer. We hope that during
your stay you’ll find San Pedro to be your
Mayor Elsa Paz
home away from home. Feel free to explore “La Isla Bonita” and see the genuine beauty and warm hospitality we have to offer.
We are more than happy to have you visiting us, may the memory
you will hold of this place be an everlasting and cherishable one.
Once again welcome and please enjoy your stay.

The Tourist’s 10 Commandments
1. Thou shalt not expect to find things as thou
hast them at home, for thou left home to find
things different.
2. Thou shalt not take anything TOO seriously, for
a care-free mind is the beginning of a fine holiday.
3. Thou shalt not let other tourists get on thy
nerves, for thou art paying out good money to
enjoy thyself.
4. Remember to take only half the clothes thou
thinks thou needs and twice the money.
5. Know at all times where thy passport is, for
a person without a passport is a person without a country.
6. Thou shalt not forget thou are a representative of your country at all times.
7. Thou shalt not worry, for he that worrieth
hath no pleasure - few things are ever fatal.
8. As a stranger in a strange land be prepared
to do as its people doeth.

When the sun sets it’s time to play in San Pedro
Ambergris Caye provides visitors and residents of “La Isla Bonita” with countless activities to stay entertained throughout the hot, sunny
days. But, once the sun sets, the nightlife kicks
in with special treats for those young at heart.
Have a family? Well, the Island Mini Golf
and Ice Cream provides lots of fun-filled golf.
Kick back and enjoy their amazing shakes,
smoothies and flurries while your kids play golf
in paradise. Also, visit the parks scattered across
San Pedro Town. Of course, the more popular
one is Central Park right in the heart of “La
Isla Bonita.” Need some time to yourself? Most
resorts offer babysitting services. Trained, professional sitters are available so do not hesitate
to check this service out.
How can you kick off your shoes and boogie
down if you have not had anything to eat? Lucky
for you, there are several restaurants to fill you
up with exquisite tastes and smells. But, a few
that have special features are:
1. Ramon’s Village – Tuesday 6:00 p.m. – 10:00
p.m. – Poolside
dining with
chicken, pork
chops, lobster
and fish. Live
music. Friday
6:00 p.m. –
10:00 p.m.
Caribbean Fiesta with Live
Music.
2. Holiday Hotel – Wednesday 6:30 p.m.
– 9:30 p.m. –
Barbeque
chicken, fish,
pork chops or a
combination
served with Belizean beans,
coleslaw, flour
tortilla and pico
de gallo. Music
provided by the famous duo, Wil and Dale.
But, of course how can you not visit the
many other restaurants that have delicious menu
items every night. Dinner choices vary from
Belizean, Caribbean, Italian, Mexican or any
other taste your taste buds crave. Late night?
Visit Casa Picasso who offers late night tapas,
½ price on selected martinis and margaritas after nine.
Now that you have a full stomach – it is
time to dance the night away.
On Mondays, visit Mango’s for Joke Night
with Barefoot Skinny as “himself.” Tell your
best joke and WIN a bar tab/drinks. Get a belly
full of laughs and much more.
If the weekend is too far away, visit the following establishments for mid-week party fun.
Start off at the 15-year-old Wednesday tradition – the world famous Chicken Drop at the
Pier Lounge. The tradition started when a local
visited Louisiana, saw the game played there
and brought the idea back. Previous owners
loved the idea and incorporated it in their weekly
schedule. So, start the night by trying your luck.
Place your bet on one of the squares and watch
how much money you can walk away with!
Also on Wednesdays, what better place to be
than Wet Willy’s Ladies’ Nite – Free shooters,
drawings, and give-aways. Dance the night
away under the stars and over the water.
Thursdays visit Jaguar’s Nite Club – Karaoke
night. Sing to your heart’s delight and win great
prizes.

Bad News for
Hawksbill Sea
Turtles
Savanah, Georgia. January 18th,
2005 – The World Wildlife Fund
(WWF) today called on the Mexican
and all the Caribbean governments,
as well as on the international scientific community to urgently restart
regional dialogue and develop a joint
strategy aimed at stopping the drastic
decline of hawksbill (Eretmochelys
imbricata) turtle populations, and secure its recovery.
Until recently, the international
scientific community believed this endangered population was on the rise.
Current research shows otherwise,
warned WWF through its new
Hawksbill
turtle
website,
www.hawksbillwwf.org. Analysis
of reproduction data revealed that
hawksbill nesting numbers had suffered a precipitous decline from
2000 to the present. The 2004 season registered less than half the usual
nests, from a total of 5,595 in 2000,
on the beaches of the Mexican states
of Veracrúz, Campeche, and
Yucatán, — reverting back to the
mid 90’s levels.
“These are alarming data, and
unfortunately, we don’t know why
there is such a dramatic decline. The
trends are similar in each state, which
may indicate that this is caused by a
regional phenomenon,” said Carlos
Drews, Marine Turtle Coordinator
for Latin America and the Caribbean at WWF. “Illegal trafficking
persists, as well as hawksbill egg
extraction, capture for meat consumption, and habitat destruction. It
is therefore urgent that governments
of Mexico and the entire Caribbean
region renew their dialogue and
move forward with concrete conservation measures before it is too
late,” added Drews.
This research was presented by
marine turtle conservation specialists at the recent “XII Regional
Workshop on Conservation Programs at the Yucatan Peninsula, and
I for the Golf and the Caribbean” in
Ciudad del Carmen, México. FolDine Artfully

lowing the meeting, the Mexican
Government requested a joint investigation to find the causes of the
hawksbill nesting decline and its status, at the COP II of the Inter-American Convention for the Protection
and Conservation of Sea Turtles in
Venezuela.
The hawksbill turtle is considered
critically endangered. It lives close
to coral reefs areas and feeds from
sponges. Adults grow up to 132 lbs.
The most important breeding site in
the Caribbean is Yucatan, México,
from where they cross the Caribbean basin to foraging grounds
throughout the region. No one
knows exactly how long it takes the
hawksbill to reach maturity, but the
species all return to the same beach
they were born to nest their eggs.

What’s new? - Ramon’s Village unveils authentic renovations
Ramon’s Village Resort has long remained one of the number one resorts on
Ambergris Caye. Visitors are in awe once inside the stunning grounds. Authentic
thatched roof cabañas, tropical lagoon-style pool, fabulous restaurant, (enjoyed by
visitors and locals alike) and, of course, the world-famous Purple Parrot Bar can
all be enjoyed while being pampered by their ever-accommodating staff.
In 2000, the management and staff of Ramon’s Village Resort worked hard in
making necessary renovations to the one-of-a-kind resort. Since then, Ramon’s
Village Resort has seen very little change to the infrastructure of its establishment. Visitors to the village can now gaze upon Ramon’s’ newest face-lift.
Since last year, the management in Laurel, Mississippi, in the United States of
America, has been hard at work designing the new face of Ramon’s. In August,
construction began to its offices, dining room, the landscaping, and other surprises. In December, Ramon’s Village now boasts amazing changes to its quaint
jungle beach setting.
As you walk into the Resort, beautiful Stellas (Mayan tiles), on each side of the
entrance, greet you. The Stellas were molded and made by the expert staff of
Ramon’s, and they welcome you to an intimate, romantic atmosphere. The landscaping has further been enhanced with a beautiful array of flora, some displayed
in large gorgeous pots imported from Mexico. Stunning Stellas lead you to the
reception office where amazing African slate tiles and beautiful handmade
furniture (created by Hummingbird
Rattan Limited) offer you a wonderful
escape from your everyday life. The
decorative wall sconces and chandeliers
hanging throughout the resort are truly
impressive. The skilled woodwork artists at Graniel’s Cabinet Shop expertly
crafted these beautiful light fixtures.
In its reception area, Ramon’s Village Resort now offers its guests a cozy
business center (to keep in touch with
the rest of the world), with a meeting
room for the sophisticated
businessperson, locker room, and
restroom. It also includes larger reservation, accounting and manager’s offices.
Ramon’s Village’s deck area has also
received a new look. It has been enlarged and a thatched palapa roof has
been built for added comfort and enjoyment. The dining room is spectacular
with a huge Mayan statue surrounded
by beautiful, colorful lights while the
gorgeous landscaping accompanies you
during your meal. Once again, dazzling
thatched chandeliers cast a romantic
glow on diners. Every detail of the dining room has been carefully thought of
and planned, with new beautiful hardwood tables, chairs, shiny new service
ware, and dinnerware.
The pool, overseen by “Rey Ramon”
has been resurfaced and now casts an
inviting radiance to entice you to take a
dip and enjoy the nice, refreshing water. The management and staff of
Ramon’s Village Resort have spent
hours to ensure that your stay will take
you into a world beyond the ordinary,
where you will be pampered in the serene and breathtaking atmosphere of the
beachwear
slate
Caribbean.

HCMR Educational
Field Trip
By Cordelia Shal
The Hol Chan Marine Reserve has
received funding from PACT (Protected Areas Conservation Trust) to
take Standard 5, 6 and high school students from San Pedro on field trips to
the marine reserve. This will give
them the opportunity to experience the
coral reef first-hand. The field trip includes both snorkeling and glass bottom boat trips.
Last year, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve education program visited all
primary schools in San Pedro to give
presentations on the importance of the
marine reserve, as well as coral reefs
and related ecosystems. As a continuation of this education program, knowing that the students have gained knowledge about the reef, the ideal next step
would be to take them to the reserve
and allow them to reinforce what they
learned. This year, the same presentations will be given to the high school
students. Not only students, but teachers who will act as chaperones, will
benefit from this field trip by experiencing conservation of our reef. This
will aid in their marine science curriculum.
Activities include a presentation on
common species found at the reserve
and reef etiquette. Educational materials will be given to each student participating in the field trips, which include: ID cards on fishes, corals and
reef invertebrates, reef etiquette bookmarks, and t-shirts.
Our field trips to the marine reserve will be concluded with an essay
competition and poster contest on what
the students learned and will also serve
as an evaluation that will measure the
degree of learning. The goal of the
project is to increase the number of
Belizean visitors to Hol Chan and
strengthen their capacity to assist in
the protection of the reserve. This trip
is free to all students.

We Should
Be Kin
“What are we waiting for?” I asked the ferryman at Boca del Rio. “I don’t see
any other golf carts coming.”
“We might as well take these two guys across along with you,” he said, pointing
back towardTres Cocos.
Two little drunks came staggering up to the ferry and parked themselves on the
back seat of my golf cart for the ride across the river.
“You know, Raul,” one of them said to his buddy, “We’ve been friends all of our
lives.”
“It’s true, Jose,” Raul said. “Like brothers. I wish we were brothers.”
“Me, too.”
“We work together , we go drink together, we live next door to each other,” Raul
said. “We should have been brothers.”
“Yeah,” Jose said. “At least we should be cousins or some kind of kin.”
“That’s right,” Raul said. “Some kind of kin.”
“Hey, Raul, let me ask you something.”
“What’s that, Jose?”
“I had a idea. Like, if sometimes when you was gone and I went to your house
and saw your wife. What if she got pregnant?Would that make us kin?”
Raul thought about it for a minute.
“No,” he said, finally. “I don’t think that would make us any kind of kin. It
would make us even, though.”

*A tsunami is a series of great sea waves caused by an underwater
earthquake, landslide, or volcanic eruption. More rarely, a tsunami can
be generated by a giant meteor impact with the ocean.
* Scientists have found traces of an asteroid-collision event that they say
would have created a giant tsunami that swept around the Earth several
times, inundating everything except the mountains 3.5 billion years ago.
The coastline of the continents was changed drastically and almost all life
on land was exterminated.
* Tsunami (pronounced soo-NAH-mee) is a Japanese word. Tsunamis
are fairly common in Japan and many thousands of Japanese have been
killed by them in recent centuries.
* An earthquake generates a tsunami if it is of sufficient force and there is
violent movement of the earth causing substantial and sudden displacement of a massive amount of water.
* A tsunami is not a single wave but a series of waves, also known as a
wave train. The first wave in a tsunami is not necessarily the most destructive. Tsunamis are not tidal waves.
