Introduction
Welcome to MedLife – the newly formed network for life
sciences and medical technology located in Aachen.
Biomedica in 2007, which today is the leading annual conference for life sciences within the Euregio Meuse-Rhine.
Created by the merger of LifeTecAachen-Jülich and the Aachen
Centre for Competence in Medical Technology (AKM) at the
beginning of 2015, MedLife is now an association with over
80 stakeholders (companies, universities, startups) in the
life sciences sector. This unique combination holds great
potential for innovation, cooperation and synergies and establishes MedLife as a key partner regionally and nationally and
internationally.
Based upon a first strategic analysis, we at MedLife have
identified several key fields of future involvement: First and
foremost, the attraction of venture capital investments for
start-ups and SMEs in the region. Additionally, MedLife will
foster the formation of innovative startup companies through
consulting, business planning and practical support.
One of the main goals of MedLife is to create an effective
networking platform for companies in the life science sector as well as to accelerate technology transfer by linking
academic researchers with companies to bring innovative
products to the market.
Many of our events and services support this vital exchange
between researchers, founders, and experienced entrepreneurs, which often leads to new projects and successful
collaborations.
In addition MedLife is in close contact with national and international life sciences associations and clusters to continually
grow and establish further contacts and activities. One example of our constructive cooperation with key life sciences networks in Belgium and The Netherlands is the initiation of the
Furthermore MedLife wants to become a significant and
powerful life sciences cluster that is recognized on a national
and international level. Thus, the network will be extended
beyond the region and complemented by new partners and
competences.
We are convinced that MedLife will become a key source for
both current and future members which are engaged and
inspired by the innovation-rich life science sector in the Aachen
and North Rhine Westphalia region. We are very much looking
forward to your contact and hope to see you soon!
Yours faithfully,
Dr. Henning Steinhagen

Today, many surgeons still suture or staple more than
they’d like to, as medical glues don’t live up to their requirements. Based in Germany and the US, Medical Adhesive
Revolution seeks to change the game, introducing a one-ofits-kind range of polyurethane based glues. The technology
is unique, as it combines ease of use, strength, flexibility
and biodegradability. Two products are currently under development: The first has been designed for dermal use, to
close a great variety of topical wounds faster, more accurately and with fewer complications. The Second is designated for use inside the body: either as an adhesive, to seal
areas of leakage or re-attach tissue, or as a hemostat, to
stop (even arterial) bleeding. Founded in 2013, but based on
a technology which had been developed since 2007, the VCbacked start-up expanded to the USA in 2015 and is now
in the process of preparing their product approval applications in Europe and overseas. It is the team’s vision to bring
their wound sealants into every Emergency Room, Operating Room and soldier’s medical pack, to save lives, radically
enhance surgical procedures and improve patient comfort.

Our designing is focused on developing a good form. It
should fulfil all ergonomic, technical, strategic and visual

it is normal that we don’t stop at the design surfaces, but
complete the construction on the hidden technical inside of

Research at DWI – Leibniz-Institut für Interaktive Materialien e.V.
(DWI – Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials) focuses on the
development of materials with active and adaptive properties,
after being founded in 1952 with an original emphasis on keratin
research and protein chemistry. The capability for active adaptation and interactivity is one of the most profound challenges of today’s materials research and will ultimately lead to the evolution of
structural via functional to intelligent materials. At DWI scientists
with backgrounds in polymer sciences, biotechnology and chemical
engineering closely collaborate on mastering this challenge.
The research approach at DWI is based on integrating molecular components, whose structure and dynamics are orchestrated
by complex interactions on various length scales, into macroscopic materials, devices and in the end systems. For exceeding the
passive functionalities of existing materials, DWI researches on
switchable material properties, the application of memory effects,
the integration of energy conversion systems, as well as on internal
feedback mechanisms. Beyond materials aspects the DWI team
aims at an integration of active characteristics into interacting material systems. The fields of application are diverse, dealing with
surface finishing, biomedical technology, biotechnology and sustainable chemical engineering.

Computational Biomedicine is a key technology en route
to better healthcare and efficient drug research. Computer
models linking bench and bedside will make the difference
in therapy of complex diseases in aging societies. In order
to tear down the barriers of life’s complexity, new methods
for Big Data analysis and modeling must be developed to
achieve the full potential of computational biomedicine.
At the interdisciplinary Joint Research Center for Computational Biomedicine of RWTH Aachen University, we
combine advanced modeling technologies and expertise
from both industry and academia in order to provide real
benefits for clinics and industry.
We strive to tackle the challenge integrating both data
driven modeling and mechanistic modeling methods. At
RWTH Aachen we are embedded into the graduate school
AICES (Aachen Institute for advanced study in Computational Engineering Sciences), I3MS and the Aachen School

For almost 60 years now the Welding and Joining Institute
(ISF) of the RWTH Aachen University has been doing research work about modern welding and joining technologies. The work of the ISF comprises almost all industrially
relevant, non-detachable joining methods. Those methods
include the arc joining methods with their modern process
variations, the entire spectrum of the electron and laser
beam welding methods, resistance and friction welding processes and adhesive bonding.
Besides fundamental process analyses which are carried
out within the scope of the above-mentioned fields, main
emphasis is put on the application-oriented implementation of the gained results into advancement and further
development of joining technologies for innovative material and structural design. Within the scope of our scientific work, great importance is placed on the direct industrial
cooperation, reaching from smaller projects up to long-term
development cooperation.

The town of Jülich is equally well known for its historical fortress and for being a center of science and research. It is this
interplay between the historical and the modern that makes
Jülich an intriguing place to live and work, especially considering that Jülich also offers affordable and attractive housing
and building opportunities.
Jülich’s science prowess derives foremost from being
home to Forschungszentrum Jülich, the largest among the 18
major research centers united in the Helmholtz Association.
With its emphasis on new ideas and cutting-edge research
tools Forschungszentrum Jülich is a pioneer in technology

The StädteRegion Aachen, located in the south-west of
North Rhine-Westphalia, is an association of municipal
corporations comprising eight cities and two municipalities
(567.000 inhabitants) with its administration headquarter
in Aachen.
Since 2009 the StädteRegion Aachen is the democratically legitimated institution for the Aachen Region. Known
for its historical and cultural variety, highly influenced by
the three country-border to the Netherlands and Belgium,
the scenic landscape of the Eifel and the scientific enrichment of the RWTH-Excellence-University in Aachen, the
StädteRegion Aachen has great economic and cultural impact on transnational cooperation.
Due to this convenient geographical location, crossborder synergies get mobilized e. g. in the working market
or in educational and cultural activities. Therefore the
StädteRegion Aachen takes on various municipal tasks, for
example in the field of transport planning or economical
promotion, with the effort to appear more outward, reducing the administrative work and strengthen the economic
and social value throughout the region.
