Siemens takes directional microphone technology to an
impressive new level with features that shatter the limitations
of traditional systems.
NEW! SpeechFocus™
SpeechFocus™ improves speech understanding from any direction automatically
and enhances wearer confidence.
SpeechFocus works by simultaneously
operating three different directivity patterns:
omnidirectional, adaptive directional, and a
reverse directional pattern. This backward
directional microphone pattern works like
an acoustic rear-view mirror and focuses on
speech which originates from the back while
suppressing noise from the front. When
speech is detected from the front hemisphere,
the adaptive directional microphone is
employed, reducing noise from the side and
the back. When speech is detected from the
back, the backward directional microphone
pattern is selected.
A study with 20 experienced hearing
instrument wearers validated the efficacy
of SpeechFocus, and the results showed an
approximately 10 dB SNR advantage (p<0.001)
over the conventional directional microphone
when speech originated from the back. This
result was also confirmed in the real world
when the subjects preferred SpeechFocus over
traditional directional microphones after a
home trial (Branda & Hernandez, 2010).

A widely recognized limitation of directional
microphones is that while their primary
function is to suppress noise, directional
microphones themselves are noisy.
BestSound Technology’s directional
microphone system features Soft Level
Directivity that overcomes this limitation.
With Soft Level Directivity, directional
microphones can be activated at a much lower
noise level. The extent of this directivity is
dependent upon the noise level so the softer

the noise, the less directivity is engaged.
When the microphone is less directional, the
microphone noise is also softer. In effect,
the microphone noise is always less than the
ambient noise, and the wearer can get the
proven benefits of directivity even in low noise
situations.

It all begins with classification
In order to learn gain and compression
settings reliably for different listening
situations, reliable sound classification is
essential. Although most hearing solutions
have some kind of classification system,
the accuracy of Siemens situation detection
is still the industry benchmark. Siemens
classification system was found to be 44% and
27% more accurate that the best competitor
for music and noise, respectively.
Automatic and Intuitive SoundLearning
In SoundLearning 2.0, every time the wearer
changes the volume or SoundBalance,
this adjustment is recorded along with the
current input level and detected acoustic
environment. These learned new settings
are automatically selected when the system
detects these situations again. The result is
unique settings for each of these listening
situations tailored to individual preferences.
No manual changes are required because
with SoundLearning 2.0, this all occurs
automatically and intuitively.
In mixed situations such as speech and
music, the activated setting would be the
optimum combination of the two. That
is, SoundLearning 2.0. is able to apply a
continuum of settings rather than three
single settings.

Conventional feedback management systems
are able to account for individual ear and fitting

to suppress feedback instantaneously without
introducing artifacts.

FeedbackStopper employs Siemens Acoustic
Fingerprint Technology to distinguish between
feedback and environmental tonal signals.
FeedbackStopper achieves an extremely fast
adaptation by using a frequency shift of 25 Hz
to break the feedback loop, within milliseconds.
Additionally, and even more importantly, the
frequency shift helps to avoid artifacts during
the fast adaptation of the phase cancellation
filter. As a result, these technologies ensure
that feedback is eliminated before it
becomes noticeable.
