SOHN CONFERENCE HONG KONG Presented by the Karen Leung Foundation Wednesday, June 3, 2015 ASIA SOCIETY HONG KONG CENTER | THE HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB HALL ADMIRALTY Welcome Dear Friends and Supporters, It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2015 Sohn Conference Hong Kong Presented by the Karen Leung Foundation. For those of you who joined us at the Conference in 2014, we appreciate your continued support. For attendees joining us for the first time, the conference will offer a unique opportunity to learn from our highly successful speakers about their strategy and investment ideas and support the goals and objectives of the Karen Leung Foundation and the Sohn Conference Foundation. Over the past 20 years, the Sohn Conference Foundation has been bringing together premier investors to present their investment ideas in New York, London, San Francisco and, now, Hong Kong. Sohn has raised over US$50 million in support of research and programs to treat and cure children with cancer. The Karen Leung Foundation is delighted to partner with Sohn and join forces to raise awareness and promote prevention, early detection, and optimal treatment of gynecological cancer in Hong Kong. Today’s conference will fund vital programs and initiatives for women and children. Today’s Hong Kong event is dedicated to the memories of Karen Leung and Ira Sohn, who continue to inspire us each day to make every effort we can to fight these cancers. Thank you for being an important part of that mission – your support is directly transformative to saving lives. Warmly and with gratitude, Lynn Tran Susanna Lee Waqas Khatri Seth Fischer Sarah Morgan Executive Director Deputy Executive Director Director Director Director Karen Leung Foundation There are over 1,600 women impacted by gynecological cancer each year in Hong Kong. The Karen Leung Foundation (KLF) is working to save lives in Hong Kong by raising awareness of gynecological cancer, educating women to increase rates of early detection and ensuring that women in treatment have access to optimal medical care. Founded in 2013, we are the first and only organization in Hong Kong devoted solely to women’s gynecological cancers. To achieve our objectives, we are collaborating with the local and international medical community, as well as other NGOs committed to improving women’s health. KLF was founded to honor the memory of Karen Leung, who was 34 years old, newly engaged to be married, and with a promising career as an equities trader at Oasis, when she was diagnosed with metastatic cervical cancer in November 2011. She fought courageously for nearly a year, but passed away in October 2012, at 35 years old. Before she died, Karen expressed her wish to raise awareness among Hong Kong women and girls about gynecological cancers to ensure that others have the information needed to prevent cancer and gain access to the best treatment options available. For program year 2015, our programs and initiatives are aimed at the areas identified as major needs in Hong Kong: Education: We believe that information is power and can save lives. KLF provides corporate and community talks designed to educate women about maintaining their gynecological health, preventing cancer through screening and vaccination and how to detect early signs and symptoms to increase the chance that treatment will be effective. Any company or organization interested in one of our talks can email [email protected] for more information. Prevention of Cervical Cancer: Unique among gynecological cancers, cervical cancer is a highly preventable disease. KLF has partnered with Chinese University of Hong Kong for a research and public service program aimed at increasing the rate of HPV vaccination by working with schools and the local medical community. The HPV vaccine prevents the most dangerous strains of the Human Papilloma Virus, which cause 99% of cervical cancer cases. The vaccine is a public health innovation for this generation of girls and young women. Yet, less than 10% of girls in Hong Kong are vaccinated, compared to 70% vaccinations rates in other countries such as Australia, Canada and the UK. Treatment: KLF is funding the Karen Leung Foundation Bed at the Haven of Hope Sister Annie Skau Holistic Care Centre to ensure that more women with late-stage gynecological cancer have access to high quality end-of-life care. The Foundation stands alone in New York City as a driver of dynamic, cutting-edge research and programming to treat and cure children with cancer. The Sohn Conference Foundation honors the memory of Ira Sohn, a talented Wall Street professional whose life was cut short when he passed away from cancer at the age of 29. In 1995, Ira’s colleagues and friends Douglas Hirsch, Lance Laifer and Daniel Nir, along with Ira’s mother Judith Sohn and brother Evan, created the Ira Sohn Research Conference, now called the Sohn Investment Conference. To date, the Sohn Conference Foundation has raised over US$60 million dollars towards their mission and raises money each year in New York City, London, San Francisco and beginning this year, in Hong Kong. This money is invested in the scientists and physicians who have the vision and brilliance to change how we overcome cancer. The Sohn Conference Foundation does not want incremental change – rather, it seeks catalytic efforts that will provide each child personalized cancer treatments and the cure that every parent would wish for his or her own child. Sponsor a Girl HPV Vaccination Program The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) causes about 99.7% of cervical cancer cases. There are currently two vaccines available that can prevent women from contracting the HPV strains most likely to cause cervical cancer. Hong Kong has an extremely low rate of girls vaccinated for HPV (less than 10% as compared to over 70% in Australia). Cost is an enormous barrier as the vaccine runs up to HK$ 2,500 - 3,800 out-of-pocket for individuals. Meanwhile, the US, UK, Canada and Australia have publicly funded vaccination programs to ensure that the vaccine is affordable and accessible. In partnership with expert researchers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, we are launching a school-based vaccination programme to educate Hong Kong women and girls about the need for the vaccine, assist them in paying for it and galvanize support for a public program. The Hong Kong government currently has no plan to subsidize the expensive, life-saving vaccine which has led to a poor vaccination rate of fewer than 10% of age appropriate women. The program provides free vaccines to middle to low income families who may not able to afford the vaccine. By sponsoring a girl, you will give her the best protection against HPV related cancers and disease later in life. The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) causes over 99.7% of cervical cancer diagnoses In Hong Kong, one woman dies of cervical cancer approximately every other day Challenges faced in Hong Kong: There are over 70 types of HPV, but only 16 “high-risk” types will lead to cervical cancer 75% The vaccine is highly effective and has been proven to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer by 75% Low Levels of Awareness Cost is an Enormous Barrier Lack of education and promotion of awareness of HPV and the vaccines HK$2,500-HK$3,800 for the three-dose series while average Hong Kong woman’s monthly income is about HK$10,000 Uptake Rate is Low Vaccination rate in Hong Kong is less than 10% for age-appropriate girls as compared to over 70% in Australia How You Can Help Make a Donation To: Sponsor a Girl HK$1,000 Sponsor a Class HK$15,000 Sponsor a School HK$120,000 To Make a Donation Donations made today will support the Karen Leung Foundation and the Sohn Conference Foundation in their respective missions to promote prevention, early detection, research and optimal treatment of gynecological and pediatric cancer.
