195. A fantastic renaissance French plumb bob. Made of bronze,
the baluster and octagonal shape is embossed with ninety six
fleur de lys, which were the symbol of royalty, as well as
numerous stars. It still retains its original patina from use. It
is engraved with the owners name “REPICHARDE”. No
doubt it dates from the late quarter of the 16th Century to
the first quarter of the 17th Century because the fleur de lys
symbol is identical to the fleur de lys found on embossed and
gilded leather caskets and other small personal items from
the same era. (See for example the late 16th Century
hammer Etui from the Frank collection). Knowing the
importance of the fleur de lys symbol during this period and
the fact that its use was not for ordinary people it would not
be impossible to presume that the user of this plumb bob
was someone important whose work was committed to the
Royal French Court, especially in this period when the art
of the architecture came to its pinnacle and the Loire
Casteles and Le Louvre were built. A rare opportunity to
own a piece of vertical history. 2 3/4” high and 361 grams.

The Chiapas Project
I have been working in wood a lot these last few months, building a
desk, a dining table, bathroom cabinets, etc. Mostly from wood
harvested off our little farm.
The oak for the desk, printer stand and dining table came from three
old oaks infected by worms. For the three I cust down we planted
twelve larger pines and six fruit trees.
For the first time in my life I was able to combine the whole process
from cutting down the trees, cutting the trunks into planks, drying,
planing and building the actual furniture.
I really see it as a process, though the end results are not perfect since
my skills and the wood are not without flaws. Besides, the worm holes,
the varied colors, the not quite perfect tenons make it all look old and
benign.
The actual purpose of this note is to let you know of the tools you so
graciously left for me. I used some of the oak to have handles turned
for the large chisels and managed to use them, a bit, on squaring off
some of the planks prior to planing. I used the single sided hatchets to
square off a plank shich now serves as a firp0lace mantle for a dear
friend.
At he end of my manual efforts I decided I probably preferred a chain
saw for the work I did.
In San Cristobal de Las Casas I have been working with a free-school
modelled after Summerhill of the 1960{s where young people from the
small villages in the region come to work and study. With
minimal adult supervision they have built the dormitories, the
classrooms, the larger halls, etc. The classes range from basic
woodworking to making music. The classes are pragmatic but with
theory and practice combined. To learn to drive a care the student must
first take the basic mechanic class follwed by the driving course. The
same for learning to sew, or make music or cooking.
The basic carpentry class works with only hand tools while the
building class works on the baried types of building with sun dried
brick, logs and concrete. The advanced classes work with some basic
machine tools.
I donated the hatchets and two of the large chisels to the school for
work on forming the logs for their building class. They were suing the
hatchets the same day I donated them in making a lap joint for the
corner of a log building.
At any rate, I was wondering if anything further has come from your
talk of donating basic tools for Chiapas? I would love to give the boys
and girls working at CIDESCI (the school) the opportunity to have
their own tools..
Saludos from Chiapas, Richard Flamer

The Museum will be open to the public
from April 2014 and will give you an
insight to how the wine industry has
evolved from the 17th to the 20th Century.
Placed in a triangle between
Gaillac, Cordes sur Ciel and
Albi, the Museum has been
built on the grounds of an old
vineyard and has more than
8000 exhibits for you to enjoy.
As you explore the Museum
which is spread over more
than 1200 square metres you
will understand how the
Winegrowers developed their
tools and skills to help them
overcome th the many
challenges they faced from the
soil, weather and diseases.
The many sections cover all
aspects of producing wine for
your enjoyment from preparing
the land for the vines to
bottling the wine ready for
delivery. There are also
various "objects d'art" which
reflect the popularity of wine
throughout the centuries.
The founder of the Museum,
Theo Elzinga has a real
passion for the history of
winemaking, being keen to
know why it changed over the
years. by studying the objects
on display and trying to
understand the reason for the changes. Most of
the changes were for the good but he will be
pleased to show you some of the things that went
wrong as well sharing many anecdotes as a result
of his studies.
