Banks not liable in most vishing
fraud, says Ombudsman

People who are the victims of so-called "vishing" scams cannot always rely on their
bank to compensate them, a study has suggested. In nearly two-thirds of cases the
Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) found that banks were not responsible for
victims' losses.
It looked at 200 examples of the telephone fraud, in which account holders lost up
to £100,000 each. But it ruled that the bank was liable for those losses in only 37%
of cases. In 63% of them, consumers were left without compensation, having, in
effect, given their own money away.
As a result it is warning that account holders need to be much more aware of the
risks. "We really want to share what we are seeing in the complaints we handle,
and encourage people to get talking about scams with their friends and relatives so
they become more alert to the risks," said Caroline Wayman, the chief
ombudsman.
'No hang-up' scam
"Vishing" - or voice phishing - occurs when fraudsters phone up, posing as the
police or the victim's bank. Last year the scam cost customers £24m, according to
Financial Fraud Action.
Usually the fraudsters persuade their victims to move money from their account.
Often they do this by telling customers to phone their bank immediately. However
the fraudster stays on the line, tricking the victim into thinking they are talking to
their bank directly.
This is known as a "no hang up" scam.
Chairman’s Report
As many of you will know, Jean Thorne, who leads the Knit and Craft group and is also
a committee member, is seriously ill in hospital at present. We are all thinking of her
and send her all our love. Hazel Belben is holding the fort for Knit and Craft at the
moment and looking after Jean’s pets.
My sincere thanks are due to Bridget Pyle and the other committee members who kept
everything going whilst Jill and I were away in France for most of June and July. Poor
Bridget was assured that there is not a lot to do as Vice Chairman and then promptly
had to take over when we were away, including distributing the June newsletter.
Whilst we were away we missed our granddaughter’s 4th birthday, but we discovered
the wonder of Skype and managed to speak to her on the day. What an amazing
invention – and it’s free!
We got back just in time for last month’s bi-monthly meeting and really enjoyed Mike
Crankshaw’s talk on the Royal Yacht Britannia. What a good speaker he was. Make a
date in your diaries for our next speaker, Dr Allan Chitty, on Thursday 20th August. He
will be talking about the history of magic and conjuring and he will be revealing at least
one magic trick that we can all learn and baffle our friends with. Don’t miss it!
Later this week, on Friday 10th July, SN U3A are hosting a meeting of the West Dorset
U3A Network at the Exchange when we will have the opportunity to speak to
representatives of the other 7 U3A’s in our region and discover what they are doing
and how they run their groups.
We currently have 140 members who have either joined this year or renewed. That
represents a fall of around 25 members from last year, which is a little disappointing.
However some former members have moved away, some have joined other U3As and
some have dropped off the radar. If you have a friend who was a member but has not
rejoined this year, it would help the committee to know why, so we can put things
right if there is a problem.

of 55. But it is a grey area for banks, who have also lost millions of pounds.
Some banks do pay compensation, while others do not.

Bombay Sapphire Distillery Trip
I am planning a coach trip to “The Home of Bombay Sapphire Gin”
on Friday 18th September 2015 to discover the secrets of the
world’s number one premium gin.
The Bombay Sapphire Distillery is situated in rural Hampshire at
Laverstoke Mill on the River Test. The visit includes the famous
botanical glasshouses where the herbs which flavour the gin are
grown, the services of an experienced guide, a look at the process
of distilling, the history of the Mill, (which produced the paper for
the Bank of England’s banknotes for 300 years) and a
complimentary drink in the Mill Bar.






Do not readily click on links in emails from unknown sources. Instead,
roll your mouse pointer over the link to reveal its true destination,
displayed in the bottom left corner of your screen. Beware if this is
different from what is displayed in the text of the link from the email.
Do not respond to emails from unknown sources.
Do not make purchases or charity donations in response to spam email.
Don’t click on ‘remove’ or reply to unwanted email.
Check junk mail folders regularly in case a legitimate email gets
through by mistake.
When sending emails to multiple recipients, list their addresses in the
'BCC' (blind copy) box instead of in the 'To' box. In this way, no
recipient will see the names of the others, and if their addresses fall into the
wrong hands there will be less chance of you or anybody else receiving
phishing or spam emails.
Similarly, delete all addresses of previous parties in the email string, before
forwarding or replying.
If you are suspicious of an email, you can check if it is on a list of known
spam and scam emails that some internet security vendors such as McAfee
and Symantec feature on their websites. [Snopes is also a good site]
Most Microsoft and other email clients come with spam filtering as
standard. Ensure yours is switched on.
Most spam and junk filters can be set to allow email to be received from
trusted sources, and blocked from un-trusted sources.
When choosing a webmail account such as gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo!
Mail, make sure you select one that includes spam filtering and that it
remains switched on.
Most internet security packages include spam blocking. Ensure that yours is
up to date and has this feature switched on.
Get Safe Online is the UK’s leading source of unbiased, factual and easy-tounderstand information on online safety. It is a great source of practical and
understandable information about using the internet safely. The web site is:

REMEMBER NEVER CLICK A WEB SITE LINK IN AN EMAIL FROM AN UNKNOWN
SOURCE— that’s the underlined text in the email that the email claims will take you
somewhere e.g. Royal Mail or the DVLA, as in the scams already mentioned.

confirming Direct Debit payment for a vehicle. The
email has a Word document attachment that
contains a virus.
We do not send Word documents when confirming Direct Debit payments and we strongly
advise anyone who receives one of these or any similar email not to open the Word
document and delete the email.
The government, led by Cabinet Office’s Government Digital Service (GDS), will continue to
investigate reports of organisations which may be actively misleading users about their
services or acting illegally, taking swift action when necessary. By using the online driving
licence or vehicle tax transactions on GOV.UK you can be sure that you are dealing directly
with DVLA.

All our members have now found their way to my new address but because of holidays and
other commitments not everyone has been able to come to the meetings but have kept in
touch and often send in their comments. It is great that we have a varied group, so
different people have different views on the book we have been reading.
Our May read was 'The Life of Pi' which gave rise to many comments. There were two
strands to the story and different people had their own ideas of whether one or both were
true. There were also some very descriptive 'gory' details which made that particular part
difficult for some of us to read. Those people who had seen the film were able to give us a
view of how the book was portrayed. Most people found it an intriguing book and very well
written.
I am now awaiting comments on our June book which I was responsible for choosing:- Bill
Byrson's 'A Short History of Nearly Everything' not little anecdotes which I thought it would
be, but a real tome of information, so I am wondering how other members have tackled it!

Royal Mail Email Scam
A scam email is currently being sent to victims fraudulently claiming to be
from the Royal Mail. Attached to the email is the CryptoLocker virus.
The victim receives an email purporting to be from the Royal Mail stating that they
are holding a parcel/letter for the victim. The victim is then required to contact the
Royal Mail to arrange for the item to be resent/collected.
By following the instructions within the email the CryptoLocker virus is
subsequently downloaded to the victim’s computer. This virus encrypts files on
the victim’s system and requests a ransom be paid in order for the files to be
decrypted.
Additional incentive is added for early repayment as the ransomware states that the
cost of decrypting the files will increase the longer the fine is outstanding.
Protect yourself:

Look at who the email is addressed to. Is it generic or specifically addressed?

Look at the quality of the images included on the email. Are they of sufficient
high quality that they could come from Royal Mail?

Do not open attachments from unsolicited emails regardless of who
they are from.

Do not click on the link supplied. Instead, go to the relevant website and
log in from there. Check the address of any email received to see if it appears
legitimate.

The Sturminster Newton U3A digital photography group has got off to a promising start this
summer with the sharing of work and expertise (some members possessing more than
others!) We have explored the merits of macro photography and ensured that each of us is
getting the most out of our cameras, some finding to our delight that our seemingly
humble cameras are capable of far more than we had ever imagined.
Our July meeting will be a ‘field trip’ to the mill at Sturminster Newton where we will take a
series of photographs using various techniques and at the August meeting we will bring our
‘best and worst’ for discussion and advice within the group, all with the intention of being
the best photographers we can possibly be. In the autumn we are hopeful that we will
have one or two guest speakers who will share their expertise with us, for example on the
tricky business of photographing wildlife; we are all very much looking forward to that.
We meet on a monthly basis at Reddleman House and, as a friendly, supportive group,
offer a warm welcome to anyone who would like to join whatever their ability.

The History Group has been having a change recently due to my holiday in France for 5
weeks. The rest of the group shared the research duties between them and covered Henry
VIII and the succession, Lady Jane Grey, Mary I & Mary Queen of Scotts, Elizabethan
coinage, medicine and Life in Tudor Times. We now move on the reign of Elizabeth I which
will probably take us until the end of this term which finishes on 23rd July.

the Opera' on the group. Questions discussed were; a) what is the dividing line , if any,
between Musical Theatre and Opera as we believe it to be? b) how do modern techniques
in staging enhance audience appreciation? c) With a trend in moving across genres what
does this mean in the future?
At the previous meeting Peirro Mattei [Singer from The Royal Opera House] spoke of his
life and experience in Opera.
At our next meeting Keith Bradley [one of our members] will be giving an illustrated talk on

Lulworth Cove
On a sunny Friday morning in June the
U3A 'Our World' group, led by Betty
Gaisford, met in the visitors' car park in
Lulworth.
In our walking boots,
carrying rucksacks and maps, we joined
the early season tourists as they
strolled down to the cove. Not for us
the trips round the bay, ice creams and
crab sandwiches (delicious as they later proved to be), for we had come with more
serious intent to examine the cliffs and rocks which make this part of the coast so
unique. As part of the Jurassic Coast, Lulworth Cove offers an opportunity to see
150 million years of history in the layers of rocks, folded by forces more powerful
than Man could ever conceive.
Portland Stone, the oldest and hardest rock, (think of St. Paul's Cathedral) protects
the outer points of the bay. The little stream which follows the road down to the sea
was once a swift flowing river swollen by meltwater from the end of the Ice Age.
Breaking through the weak points in the rock, it allowed the force of the sea to
erode the softer rocks behind. The Purbeck beds, the clay Wealden beds, the
Greensand and a layer of Chalk are all exposed to view.
Most exciting, however, is the sight of these layers of rock folded as if they were as
malleable as rubber, their existence due to the collision of an ancient African
continent pushing into the landmass that became Europe. The gigantic forces which
created the Alps and the Pyrenees had repercussions here in Dorset and have
created spectacular scenery both in the Cove and further round the coast at the
Stair Hole where the Lulworth Crumple attracts many visitors.
Add to this fossils and dinosaurs and it is obvious why this area of coast justifies
being a World Heritage Site. It is right on our doorstep, so why not discover for
yourself how our world was formed. If you want to find out more, behind the gifts
and souvenirs in the Visitors Centre there is an information area selling books, maps
and DVDs.

In June Our World (Natural History Group) visited Lulworth Cove for a ‘hands-on’ look at
the geology of the Jurassic Coast. Last winter’s storms had made significant changes to the
chalk face. This made it difficult to pick out features such as the greensand strata and the
point where the chalk beds have become vertical. Nevertheless, there was plenty else to
keep us interested.
There is a full report of the field trip elsewhere in the Newsletter; this was written by a
member of the Group.

Do you wish you didn't receive so much Door to Door unaddressed mail? Well this
is how to stop it! Telephone this Royal Mail number - 01865796988 and ask for a
form regarding opting out of receiving Door to Door unaddressed mail. They are
very prompt in sending it. It's simple and there is also an address on it for opting
out from other un-addressed mail deliveries. It doesn't get rid of it all as they are
still legally obliged to deliver all addressed mail, which includes mail that is
addressed "To the Occupier" but at least it gets rid of some of it, about 25% of
it! Your Opt Out will last for a period of 2 years after which you will have to repeat
the process. Let's all do it!
