The peace of mind you need
editor’s let ter
What’s in a name? Everything! Choosing a name for your unborn baby
is fun, for sure, but it’s also a bit anxiety inducing. After all, we pour all
our hopes, dreams and imaginings about who our child will become
into our search for the perfect name.
Names, like all fashions, go in and out of style. But name preferences
are still deeply personal. Your all-time favourite name may be tainted
forever for your partner because it belonged to the grade-three class
bully. That’s why we’ve added a workbook to the Today’s Parent Baby
Names guide: to help you consider each other’s choices and find a name
you can both love. We also have a listing of the 2,000 most popular names to browse through,
and special theme pages with more ideas to inspire you.
One thing’s for sure: Whether you make the final decision months in advance, or not until you
are holding your baby in your arms, you’ll soon know that you’ve chosen exactly right. Babies
have a way of growing into their names — just as they grow into our hearts.
Happy name hunting!

Does your extended family bridge both official
languages? Or maybe you just love the sound
of French names, but want a name that works
equally well in English. Many of the old
standards — David, Marc, Danielle, Nicole —
will do the job, but we found a few less
common names that are fluently bilingue.

Stuck on the Middle?
OK, so it’ll be Colleen if it’s a girl and Brendan if it’s a boy. But what about
your baby’s middle name? Will you use it to honour an ancestor? Link him
forever to dear old Dad or your own maiden name? Maybe use that other
name you almost picked for the first name?
Do we ever even use middle names — except when we’re angry? As
in: “John Robert Smith! Get down from there!” Sure we do.
A good middle name gives your child the option of using it later on,
either to distinguish herself from the other Madisons in her class or as an
alternate first name if she ends up hating the one she has.
So don’t just choose any old middle name — pick something with
meaning to you or that you absolutely love.
get rhythm: Is your middle name Marie, Lynn, Louise, Ann or Elizabeth?
You’re in good company. These popular picks just tend to sound good
with other names — especially two-syllable first names.
A name like Marie or Louise has its emphasis on the second syllable,
breaking up the sound of a two-syllable first name like Sarah. A name like
Ann, meanwhile, adds an extra syllable. So most people would say Emily
Ann just sounds better than Emily Madison.

20 Today’s Parent baby names
“There’s an informal tradition in my mother’s family of using ‘Jane’ as a
girl’s middle name. I hated Jane as a kid — thought it was the ugliest
name on the planet. Now, I love being connected to generations of
women — from my cousin to my great-grandmother.”

the century and have

a personal history
Want an unusual, meaningful name that pays tribute to your
historical background?
Then consider naming your child after one of your ancestors.
Some possible places to start your search:
•Ask your older relatives about their favourite aunts, uncles, grandparents and so on.
•Hit the library and explore the history of your own culture. Look for names of
important figures.
•Do a virtual search. Try baby2see.com/names/decades_trends and genealogy.

•For a name from a particular culture, go to Todaysparent.com/babynamer and
select from the “origin” drop-down menu. Or google “your cultural background
plus names” (“Scandinavian names,” for example).

Add a middle name
A middle name might be one of the favourites from your first list, a name chosen for
its special meaning, or one that just sounds good with your child’s first and last
names. Start by listing some middle names you are considering:
boys
girls
Now try them out. Remember to say the full name out loud, as well as just
the first and last names. Who knew that “Luke Hoffman” could be so easily
confused with “Lou Koffman”? And check the initials — Penny Elizabeth Evans
was probably not pleased with hers.

The final selection
Or maybe not. Some parents know exactly what they will name their baby well
ahead of time. Others prefer to have a couple of options ready, and then wait until
that magic moment when they meet to see what suits their new family member.
Some parents even surprise themselves with a last-minute entry that comes to
them when the baby is born. Whatever you decide, it won’t be long until you can’t
imagine naming him or her anything else!
