Tiedekunnan 50-vuotisjuhlia vietetään
monin eri tavoin
50-vuotisjuhlallisuudet ovat parhaillaan käynnissä. Tiistaina (3.11.)
tiedekunta järjesti tiedepäivän alle kouluikäisillä lapsille. Tapahtuma
tarjosi
lapsille
elämyksiä
kiehtovista
matematiikan
ja
luonnontieteiden ilmiöistä. Lapset tutkiskelivat ötököitä, testasivat
kuinka ilmapallon avulla luodaan sähköä, tanssittivat rusinoita ja
tekivät lempiväritilastoa. Yhteensä tapahtumaan osallistui yli 200
lasta. Positiivista palautetta satoi ovista ja ikkunoista, lapset
hymyilivät ja näyttivät ”oikeat” tiedemiehet ja –naisetkin nauttineen
tilanteesta. Parasta olikin lapsista huokuva oivaltamisen riemu ja

Tiedekunnan johtoryhmän kuulumisia
Tiedekunnan johtoryhmä kokoontui 2.11.2015. Ennen kokousta tiedekunnan johtoryhmä tutustui
Ruusupuiston uusiin tiloihin. Kokouksessa käytiin läpi sopimusneuvottelujen (22.10.2015) anti. MLTK:sta
sopimusneuvotteluihin osallistuivat dekaani Henrik Kunttu, varadekaani Jussi Kukkonen ja
hallintopäällikkö Taru Kujanpää. Henkilökunnalle ja opiskelijoille järjestetään tiedotustilaisuus yliopiston
sisäisistä sopimusneuvotteluista 5.11.2015.
Rehtorin ja dekaanin puheenvuorojen jälkeen keskusteltiin profiloitumisesta ja rakenteellisesta
kehittämisestä, opetussuunnitelmatyöstä ja voimavaroista (rahoitus, henkilöstö ja tilat). Tiedekunta sai
kiitosta onnistumisesta tutkimuksessa ja kansainvälistymisessä sen sijaan maisterituotanto on
haaste. Tiedekunta on vahvasti mukana yliopiston profiloitumisessa. Kokouksessa käytiin läpi budjetti ja
sisäinen rahanjako vuodelle 2016. Jyväskylän yliopiston Vesa Kupari esitteli johtoryhmälle Unifund Oy:n
toimintaa. Jyväskylän yliopiston rahoitusyhtiö auttaa tutkimuslähtöisiä yrityksiä.
Päätökset:
Työsuunnittelu 2016–2017 toteutetaan SoleTM -järjestelmässä.
Syyskuussa toteutetun Jyväskylän yliopiston työhyvinvointikyselyn tulokset käydään läpi
laitoskokouksissa.
Tiedekunnan apurahakäytänteet käydään läpi yhdessä laitosten kanssa.

Tiedekunnan palvelukeskus uudistuu
Toiminta-
ja
taloussuunnitelman
mukaan
hallintoa
tehostetaan
tiedekunnan
strategian
mukaisesti lisäämällä yhteistyötä laitosten välillä. Tiedekunta asetti strategiassaan tavoitteeksi erityisesti
kansainvälisen tutkimusrahoituksen kasvun. Tiedekunta kehittää tutkimuksen tukipalveluja ja suuntaa
tarkoitukseen riittävästi resursseja. Vuoden 2016 alusta toteutetaan seuraavat muutokset:
Satu Huhtala aloittaa tiedekunnan toimistossa suunnittelijana. Hänen tehtävänään on MLTK:n
hakuja rahoitusneuvonta, hankehakemusten laatiminen yhteistyössä tutkijoiden kanssa. Tehtävä
tulee tarkentumaan yhteistyössä laitosten kanssa.
Amanuenssi Taimi Närhi siirtyy taloudesta vastaavaksi amanuenssiksi matematiikan ja
tilastotieteen laitokselta bio- ja ympäristötieteiden laitokselle.
Amanuenssi Riitta-Liisa Kuittinen jää 21.12.2015 alkaen noin vuodeksi vuorotteluvapaalle.
Virpi Malinen vaihtaa laitosta bio- ja ympäristötieteiden laitokselta matematiikan ja tilastotieteen
laitokselle taloussihteeriksi. Virpin nykyistä tehtävää hoitamaan tulee Riitta-Liisan vuorotteluvapaan
sijainen.

Tiedekunnan toimisto muuttaa nanotaloon
Tiedekunnan toimisto muuttaa viimein nanotiedekeskuksen kolmanteen kerrokseen. Osa tiedekunnan
toimiston henkilökunnasta on jo muuttanut (ks. sivu). Muutto tapahtuu viimeistään loppu vuodesta siten,
että toimisto sijaitsee vuoden alussa uusissa tiloissa. Myös dekaani Henrik Kunttu muuttaaa nanotalon
kolmanteen kerrokseen toimiston yhteyteen.

Ajankohtausta tiedekunnassa
Erkon säätiöltä puoli miljoonaa herpesvirusten toiminnan tutkimukseen
Dosentti Maija Vihinen-Ranta bio- ja ympäristötieteiden laitokselta ja professori Jussi Timonen fysiikan
laitokselta ovat saaneet Jane ja Aatos Erkon säätiöltä 503 000 euron apurahan vuosille 2015–2018. Eri
tieteenaloja yhdistävä, uudentyyppinen tutkimus mahdollistaa ainutlaatuisen tiedonsaannin ja virussoluvuorovaikutukseen liittyvistä mekanismeista.
eEducation-hankkeille myönnetty lisärahoitusta (vuonna 2015)
Prof. Jari Ylänne (bio- ja ympäristötieteiden laitos), aktemiatutkija Pekka Koskinen (fysiikan laitos) ja prof.
Jan Lundell (kemian laitos) on saanut eEducation-hankkeille lisärahoitusta vuonna 2015.

järjestettiin

teeman
oli
valo. Nanotiedepäivillä kuultiin monia mielenkiintoisia puheita. Lisäksi valoilmiöille oli varattu oma sessio
sekä paneeli nanotiedepäivien ohjelmassa. Yleisö oli aktiivisesti mukana niin paneelissa kuin puheidenkin
jälkeen. Nanotiedepäivien konsepti sekä tilat saivat erittäin positiivista palautetta. Seuraava kerran
nanotiedepäivät järjestetään vuonna 2017. Tunnelmia voi aistia täällä.

Heliumionimikroskooppi toimintavalmis
Suomen Akatemialta saadulla rahoituksella fyysikoille ja biologeille hankittu heliumionimikroskooppi on
toimintavalmis. Heliumionimikroskooppi on kuvantava tutkimuslaite, jonka avulla jopa alle puolen
nanometrin kokoiset yksityiskohdat erottuvat tutkittavista näytteistä. Laitteella voidaan myös muokata
nanomateriaaleja, kuten esimerkiksi grafeenia. Mikroskooppi sijaitsee Nanoscience Centerin
puhdastilassa.

Uutta NMR-spektrometria asennetaan parhaillaan
Ultrakorkean kentän (800 MHz) NMR-laite on viimein saapunut. Laite sijaitsee nanotiedekeskuksessa
(YN032). Laitteella voidaan tutkia mm. makromolekyylien 3-ulotteisia rakenteita ja samalla se lisää
huomattavasti mittauksen herkkyyttä. Laite pitäisi olla toimintakunnossa marraskuun loppuun mennessä.

Fysiikan laitos huipulle tuoreimmassa NTU-rankingissa
Fysiikan laitos on noussut maailman 300 parhaan fysiikan tutkimusta tekevän ainelaitoksen joukkoon
kansainvälisessä NTU-rankingissa, jota toteuttaa National Taiwan University. Myös Jyväskylän yliopisto
paransi sijoitustaan Best Global Universities –yliopistovertailun listalla.
Suomen Akatemian tieteelliset toimikunnat nimetty kaudelle 2016–2018
Biotieteiden ja ympäristön tutkimuksen toimikunnassa mukana prof. Jussi Kukkonen ja prof. Johanna
Mappes.

Research Professionals-rahoitustietokannan koekäyttö
Jyväskylän yliopisto koekäyttää kolmen viikon ajan tutkimus- ja hankehallintoon liittyvää Research
Professionals -tietokantaa, ja toivoisi testaajiksi myös tutkijoita. Mikäli olet kiinnostunut, yhteydenotto 5.11.

Muistutuksena, että yliopiston henkilökunnalla on mahdollisuus ottaa influenssarokotus. Työterveyshoitajat

Faculty's 50th anniversary is celebrated in many ways
The 50-year festivities are already on-going. On Tuesday 3rd of November the Faculty organized a
Science Day for preschool-aged children. The event offered them experiences in the wonderful world of
mathematics and science. They studied insects, tested how you can make electricity with a balloon and
how you can make raisins dance. In all, there were over 200 children. Please, see the pictures here.
On Tuesday evening, the students had their share of the festivities in a cocktail party in Tanssisali
Lutakko. Event included for example small-scale catering, live music presented by three different band,
choral music, presentations from Head of Student and Academic Affairs Marja Korhonen and the subject
associations. Some pictures are available here.
The 50-year festivities culminate this Friday (6th of November) in staff’s soirée at Rantasipi Laajavuori.

The meeting of the executive group was 2 of November. Before the meeting the faculty executive group
familiarized themselves with the new Ruusupuisto premises. In the meeting, the executive group assessed
the conclusion of internal agreement negotiations (22nd of October, 2015). From the Faculty of
Mathematics and Science, The Dean Henrik Kunttu, the Vice Dean Jussi Kukkonen and Head of Faculty
Administration Taru Kujanpää attended the negotiations. There will be a briefing for the staff and the
students of the internal agreement negotiations on 5th of November.
Profiling, structural development and resources (finance, staff and premises) were subjects of discussion
after the speeches of the Rector and the Dean. The Faculty of Mathematics and Science received praise
for succeeding in research and internationalization, the amount of graduating master’s degree students on
the other hand is a challenge. The faculty has a great importance in the profiling of the University. The
budget and internal finance 2016 were assessed.
Decisions:
Professional planning 2016–2017 will be executed in SoleTM system
The results of the occupational welfare inquiry of the University of Jyväskylä will be reviewed in
Department meetings
The supporting finance policies will be assessed with the departments.
Controller Vesa Kupari introduced the operation of Unifund Oy to the Executive group. Unifund Oy, the
financing company of the University of Jyväskylä, supports research-based companies.

Administration services of the faculty
According to the strategy, the administration will be improved with the increase of the co-operation
between the Departments. Especially the increase of international research funding was set as an
objective in the strategy of the faculty. The faculty will develop the support services for research and will
direct enough resources for the cause. From the beginning of 2016 following changes will be carried
out:
Sari Huhtala will start in the faculty office as a coordinator. Her duties will be the applying and
finance services of the faculty and the composition of project proposals. The duties will become
more precise in co-operation with the departments.
Departmental Coordinator Taimi Närhi will move from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics
to Department of Biological and Environmental Science and take the post of the administrator of
economic affairs.
Departmental Coordinator Riitta-Liisa Kuittinen will take a job alternation leave on 21st of
December, 2015 for about a year.
Virpi Malinen will move from the Department of Biological and Environmental Science to the
Department of Mathematics and Statistics and take the post the Economic Secretary. Her current
position will be taken by the replacement of Riitta-Liisa whilst her leave.

The Faculty Office finally moves into Nanoscience Center
The Faculty Office finally moves into Nanoscience Center’s third floor. Few of the office staff have already
moved. The move of the rest of the staff will take its place at the latest in the end of this year and the office
will start in new premises in the beginning of next year. The Dean of the Faculty Henrik Kunttu will as well,
move to Nanoscience Center’s third floor next to the office.

Erkko Foundation gives half a million for herpes virus research
Docent Maija Vihinen-Ranta from the Department of Biology and Environmental sciences and professor
Jussi Timonen from the Department of Physics have received 503 000 euro grant for years 2015–2018
from the Jane ja Aatos Erkko Foundation.
Additional funding for eEducation project (2015)
Prof. Jari Ylänne (Department of Biological and Environmental Science), academy research fellow Pekka
Koskinen (Department of Physics) and prof. Jan Lundell (Deptartment of Chemistry) have gotten
additional funding for eEducation projects in 2015.
Faculty Council
The Decisions of Faculty Council’s October meeting can be found from here. Next meeting will be on 18th
of November. The budget (2016) estimates will be assessed in the November meeting.
NanoScience Days
The NanoScience Days was held for 11th time at Agora on 22th – 23rd of October. The theme of 2015 was
light. Intresting lectures were heard and, in addition, there were sessions and a panel dedicated for light
phenomena and technology in the NanoScience Days program. The audience took actively part in the
panel and after the lectures. The NanoScience Days concept and premises got very positive feedback.
Next NanoScience Days will be organized in 2017. Here are some photos of the event.

Helium ion microscope ready for research challenges
The helium ion microscope (HIM) which was funded through joint physics and biology Academy of Finland
project has passed the installation tests and is ready for research. The instrument can be used for
high-resolution imaging down to 0.5 nm resolution and also for modification of nanomaterials, like for
example graphene. The microscope is located in the Nanoscience Center clean room. Contact Timo
Sajavaara for more information. Please see the photo "A HIM cross-section image from a 100 nm thick
nanolaminate composed of 5 nm thick Al2O3 and TiO2 layers." The film was grown on silicon using
atomic layer deposition (Image by Kai Arstila).
A new NMR spectrometer
A new NMR spectrometer operating at 800 MHz of 1H frequency, has arrived to Nanoscience Center. The
18.8 T magnet has now been unloaded and is sitting in YN032 for further installation. It is expected to
reach 800 MHz field within 2-3 weeks and being operational by the end of this month. Contact prof. Perttu
Permi for more information.
Department of Pysics go up in the rankings
Department of Pysics has been ranked among top 300 research institutes in the field of physics in the
international NTU-ranking carried out by the National Taiwan University. Indicators used are scientific
productivity, impressiveness and the level of research. The ranking uses Essential Science Indicators- and
Web of Science -databases as sources of information. Also University of Jyväskylä improved its' standing
in the Best Global Universities -ranking ending up in position 465 and 202 among European universities.

Staff training of the Language Centre
The Language Centre arranges language and communication skills training for university staff in

Influenza vaccinations for staff in 2015
The University of Jyväskylä offers influenza vaccination for its staff. If you have other appointments at the
Occupational Health Care Center you can get the vaccination during those appointments as well. No
separate appointments need to be made for vaccinations.

develop equal opportunities for study and work at the University.
Nearly 400 open work and practical training positions for students
Working Life Services has website called TEP/Jobs which collects the job and practical training offers
employers have sent for students of University of Jyväskylä and pro gradu-offers under same website. The
service should be advertised actively to students.
Support for students
Nyyti ry is a national and non-profit association to help and support students’ psychological welfare and
management in life. Nyyti organizes different kinds of events and online groups.
