The people with whom we share our passion make it that much more enjoyable, fostering new ways to enjoy the friendships our association with Porsche cars provide. As a club we have a tough act to follow, but the year ahead has additional prospects for another “fun” year. FUN is a word I’d like to stress — it is the driver for our events and increasing member participation. The Planning Meeting on Saturday, January 23rd, is the first step in organizing a successful year for us. Like last year, we have a couple of big events already scheduled: Mammoth High Altitude Tour Weekend (June 17th–19th), SNR Zone 7 Concours Weekend (July 30th–31st) and the PCA Treffen at Lake Tahoe (September 7th–11th). These are fantastic Craig Kugler President member events that really show off our area, but we have more events to plan. Whether you have hosted dinners, led driving tours, participated in competitive events, or just came out and enjoyed some of the club events, your input for 2016 is important. I hope you take the opportunity to come to the Planning Meeting and share your vision for a successful 2016! (More details on the calendar page in this issue.) In this edition, you’ll get the highlights of our November and December events which included the Fall Tech Session, Volunteers Appreciation Dinner and the Holiday Party. In addition there’s information on our very popular Cioppino Feed (February 13th). This year we are partnering with Reno SCCA for their Tire Rack “Street Survival” program. This is an important community outreach designed to improve the driving skills for young drivers in our area. Read Doug Driver’s article and let him know you want to support this joint effort! Finally, we have a “real” winter for a change — thank goodness! Enjoy it, but remember that spring is just around the corner … and that means driving season is coming! I hope to see you at our next event. Until then, be safe! January/February 2016 | Porsche Club of America | SIERRA NEVADA | 7 Fall Tech Session In early November, 37 SNR members had a chance to enjoy the third tech session of the year. This one was hosted by Porsche of Reno and conducted by Jess Lattin, the club’s Technical Chair. Suspension Tricks & Options was the focus of this session, and as usual Jess was well prepared with display parts and cars on racks. Jess’ approach was to have “props” appropriate for the topic, talk through the related issues and use the props for the visual example. A bent rim, inside edge tire wear, wheel hub damage and leaking struts were Craig Kugler, displayed and discussed for President cause and effect. In each case Jess demonstrated that the associated problem was not always easy to see but affected the handling and safety of the car. Jess then moved on to the three cars on the racks, which included a 981 GT4, a 991 GT3 and a heavily modified 987 Cayman S. Jess demonstrated the techniques and process of “corner balancing” on the Above, Jess Lattin explains the principles of Corner Balancing to SNR members. GT4. This demonstration included the scale setup and computer readouts of the overall vehicle weight and the weight over each of the four wheels. The discussion centered on how incorrect corner weight can adversely affect handling, while proper corner balancing can be used to improve the setup that a car especially for track or autocross uses. After member questions were answered, Jess invited everyone up for a more hands-on experience. This method prompted additional questions, allowed for a greater interchange of ideas and provided a learning experience for all. With the cars on the racks, members got an up-close view of the similarities and differences in the front and rear suspension setups and parts of each of the cars. Jess finished up the session by plugging in his service computer (PIWIS) into the GT3 and demonstrating the At left, Rich Caviness, Mark Lewis, Deven Hickingbotham and Doug Driver pose beneath a GT3 8 | SIERRA NEVADA | Porsche Club of America | January/February 2016 Below, Merlin Simons, George Mihalko and Eric Aust enjoy a breakfast snack before the Tech Session. data available to service techs, which is not just limited to suspension information. Members gave Jess a big hand in appreciation for presenting such an interesting session. Thanks to Deven Hickingbotham (GT3), Lance Gharat (Cayman S) and Craig Kugler (GT4) for “donating” their cars for this session. Additional thanks go to Porsche of Reno for their support. We all look forward to the Spring Tech Session to see what new topic Jess will serve up for members! Above, Jess Lattin shows Rich Caviness, John Strom and Doug Crook how PIWIS works. January/February 2016 | Porsche Club of America | SIERRA NEVADA | 9 Volunteer Appreciation Dinner Even with a last minute change of venue, the annual Volunteers Appreciation Dinner turned out to be a wonderful evening with 38 members attending. The idea behind this annual event is to recognize member volunteers and event hosts for their contributions to the success of our club. 2015 was a very successful year with 41 events including three tech sessions, 24 social events (breakfasts, dinners, wine tastings, etc.), seven area drive & dines, three weekend away specials (Mammoth, Wine Tour and Rennsport), and four competitive events (Concours and autocross related). All with fantastic member participation! Because of the late venue change, a projector was not available to show the pictures from the year’s Craig Kugler events on a big screen. Members were still able to see the slide show, which ran throughout the evening on a laptop in the dining room. Needless to say there were a lot of smiles and happy chatter as members took time to view the slide show. Grill at Quail Corners restaurant was the scene of the evening’s festivities. It is a lovely, private room with its own bar, which promoted a lively social hour full of interesting conversations. After dessert, I spoke to the group about the importance of volunteers in the club. I also explained the critical open positions of Activities Chair and Newsletter Editor and encouraged members to think about volunteering for these roles. Then, assisted by Membership Chair Karen O’Larey, we recognized a total of 12 other members in attendance for their volunteer efforts: Rich O’Larey, Harry & Debbie Dell, Pete & Carol Dickinson, Ron Lewis, Mary Lou Kugler, Steve & Mayla Kent, George Queyrel, Paul Giannini and Dick Bottom. Another 24 members not able to attend were also recognized. For each of their volunteer events, recipients were presented with a club gift certificate that can be used at future club events.
