With a proposed schedule of over 40 events in 2016, two events really stand out to me: our SNR Zone 7 Concours in July and the “Treffen at Lake Tahoe” in September. These are special events with Zone and National exposure for our club. A cadre of members on event-specific committees is working on these now, but for ultimate success we will need a substantial number of volunteers to support our efforts. BTW, volunteering is not a dirty word. In fact, it’s surprising how much fun it is to participate in this way. Volunteer sign-ups for these events will be circulating soon and I hope you will step up and con- Craig Kugler President tribute to the success of our club. In this edition, you’ll get the highlights of our January and February events, which included the Planning Meeting, Powder Monday and the Cioppino Feed. In addition, Jim Hemig shares his passion for two-wheel Porsches. Upcoming events include information on the “new 911” Launch Party, New Member Breakfast and the Street Survival program. As you know, we are partnering with Reno SCCA for their Tire Rack “Street Survival” program. This is an important community outreach event designed to improve the driving skills of young drivers in our area. Finally, I know that most of you enjoy reading the club newsletter and you should. It provides a window into our events, our members and all things Porsche. It has also won two PCA National awards in the last eight years. Previous editors served the club extremely well, but at present we have no one for this important club role. Outsourcing parts of the process have allowed us to maintain the quality of our newsletter but it’s costly and ultimately not sustainable. I encourage you to contact me about your interest in this important role. I hope to see you at our next event. Until then, be safe! March 2016 | Porsche Club of America | Sierra Nevada | 5 It’s not just the cars It’s the people (and the bikes!) “Porsche makes a bicycle?” I remember saying all this was unknown that years ago when a family friend mentioned seeing to me. Over the years I’ve scoured the Jim Hemig Photos by Laura Mahaffy internet and PCA events asking about this elusive Porsche mountain bike. There isn’t much available online and what I found was dated. What I could piece together is that Porsche commissioned a German bicycle company, Votec, to design and manufacture to Porsche’s specifications. At the time, which was the mid- to late-1990s, it was full of the most modern biking technology. By today’s standards, though, it’s out of date, heavy and almost impossible to find parts for. Yet it rides like a dream. The Bike S shifts smoothly, turns effortlessly and can climb any mountain. I didn’t ride it much in Reno. It looked beautiful sitting in the garage unMany years later, I have a garage full of Porsche der all the Porsche posters. But after recently moving automobiles and a plethora of Porsche paraphernalia to Grass Valley, Calif., near the old stomping grounds including everything from posters, flags, hats, shirts, of cycling legend Greg LeMond, I felt the urge to resunglasses, scale models, a wristwatch and much ally get out and ride this secret Porsche racer. more — all of the normal stuff any average PCA I would bet most PCA members now know about member has collected. It’s in excellent condition, and a garage queen by the strictest definition. Not unlike Porsche cars, leaving such a beauty in the garage isn’t a good long-term strategy. With this realization, I have something special in mind for 2016. I will reach my half-century mark and, with that, I have planned an adventure that I’d like to share with the Porsche Club of America: I intend to ride my Porsche mountain bike, fitted with road bike tires, on a century ride in Sacramento, Calif. This isn’t any normal 100-mile ride. This one ends in downtown Sacramento during an Oktoberfest, which seems fitting for the German marque. I could be wrong, but to my knowledge this has not been accomplished, or even attempted, on a Porsche bike before. So why not be the first? I plan to train over the winter and into spring, and then sign up for a 53-mile bike ride in the California foothills in May. This first ride takes place on Saturday, May 14th, with a challenging road ride through the Sierra Nevada foothills. The shorter ride is in preparation for the longer century ride in October. A long summer of training will follow for the big 100-mile finale at the Sacramento Century on October 1st, which undoubtedly will be celebrated immediately after with a bratwurst and beer. I am prepared to ride this solo, with friends and family driving my Cayenne S as a supply chase vehicle. However, with almost a year to train, I hope other PCA members and Porsche bike owners take notice and join me for the ride. Don’t own a Porsche bike? I am sure your local Porsche dealership would be happy to help you out. Or perhaps frequent used sporting good stores. Maybe you’ll get lucky like I did. If you’d like to take part in either of these two bike rides with me, do your own hometown Porsche bike ride or just follow along with my journey, visit the Facebook page or blog that I have created to share the adventure and send me a message if you’re interested in participating. March 2016 | Porsche Club of America | Sierra Nevada | 7 Cioppino Feed The mid-winter fixture on the SNR calendar, the Cioppino Feed, delivered another delightful evening for 46 members and guests. Aided by beautiful weather, a welcome respite from the recent winter storms, many members decided to air out their sports cars for the evening. Everything from an original 912 to a GT3 sparkled in the parking lot, including the newest addition for John & Alice Strom: a 2009 Meteor Gray Boxster S! Craig Kugler Arriving early is a President must for this event as the club virtually takes over the Coney Island Restaurant for the evening. Expectations of great food and Porsche camaraderie seem to rev members up and the conversations were freeflowing during the social! At 7 pm hosts Sheri and At left, hosts Jafar and Sheri Sepahpour enjoy a quiet moment before dinner. Jafar Sepahpour whistled everyone to their seats in the dining room so the dinner could begin. Beyond the wonderful food and “old Reno” ambience, what makes this event so special is the family dining experience. Two long rows of tables are set and everyone passes around warm bread, delicious salads and wine and shares in more interesting banter with new and old friends. The conversation seemed to calm for a while as the main course appeared, large steaming bowls of cioppino served on a bed of polenta. Steak dinner was available for those who preferred a menu alternate. Whatever you had, the food was fantastic, befitting the Coney Island’s reputation as the premier local’s place. For dessert, their famous bread pudding was served with hot coffee — what a way to end our luxurious feast! Special guests attending were Zone 7 Rep Sandy Provasi and husband Tom Mary Lima passes the salad as Paul Lima passes the bread basket during dinner. 8 | Sierra Nevada | Porsche Club of America | March 2016 At left, Ozzie Smith accompanied by Jackie Aynesworth and Lucette Simon. As always our thanks go to Sheri and Jafar for hosting this event and to Lori Galleti and the Coney Island staff for the outstanding job they do! As we said our goodbyes, we exited into the cool night where a mostly empty parking lot greeted us. Immediately my thoughts went back to the wonderful evening, the cioppino and ahead to next year. The inaugural Powder Monday ski event was held on February 1 at the Sugar Bowl Ski Resort. Several inches of snow fell overnight, but by dawn the skies were clearing. Temperatures were in the high teens and the wind was strong. A perfect day! Four intrepid club members braved these conditions and made their way over the summit, although for some reason no one drove a Porsche! Activities Chair Renée met Alan and Kathy at the Disney Express Lift at 9am and skied several intermediate and advanced groomed runs both on Disney and the new Crow’s Nest lift until the others were able to join them. Rob Whisen and and KC Mares were held up a bit due to road conditions, but finally were able to meet up with Renée. Rob was especially thankful to get a break from skiing with his 6-year-old son and to be able to ski with adults. Agreed. Been there, done that. Renée led the group on a tour of the mountain up the Lincoln Express Lift and over to the Judah side of the resort. While on the lifts, Renée shared the history of Sugar Bowl with her guests. With the wind and new snow, some areas were wind packed, but in wind protected areas there were nice stashes of powder which Rob and Chuck enjoyed. This was Rob’s first time at Sugar Bowl, and he remarked that the view were amazing and he very 10 | Sierra Nevada | Porsche Club of America | March 2016 Below, Kathy Hess enjoying the powder at Sugar Bowl. much appreciated the variety of terrain. By lunchtime everyone was skied out and perhaps a bit cold, so the day came to a bit of an early end. But with no lift lines and fast express lifts, the club was able to get a lot of skiing in. Well, does all this look like fun? We have one more Powder Monday scheduled for February 29th at Sugar Bowl. Contact Deven Hickingbotham at [email protected] to sign up.
