the TG scene was and where the series of book was going.
I talked to many people from the UK. I visited the USA.
I met other publishers and authors.
I met owners of shops and services. I asked :
“What can I do to improve on what I have done through
the Tranny Guide over the last 12 years” ?
I listened carefully and concluded that I must create a
SUPER book and thereafter promote it as my flagship to a
wider readership. While MOST IMPORTANTLY at the
same time providing a cheaper, annual, reference book, for
readers to follow up and find specific contacts.
Therefore I am introducing a new and improved service.
‘Transgender AtoZ’ is a new annual publication that concentrates on
Events diaries and Listings from around the world. These are supported
by Personal Reports, Personal Profiles, Business Profiles and Reviews with
hundreds of amazing pictures. This publication, I hope, will fulfil the
requests for a comprehensive ‘reference guide’ with a traditional international listing format .... But there is MORE - MUCH MORE…
www.TransgenderAtoZ.com is a new web site that I have created to
be the ON LINE (internet) version of this book. This web site (uniquely)
is maintained interactively by those that create TG friendly events and
offer shops, services and places to go, directly via the internet. While
YOU the readers can add your news, reviews and pictures.
I have invested a lot of time and money in this web site. I hope that
event organisors, groups, businesses and readers make it their own and
carry on the work started by the ‘Tranny Guide’ back in those pre-internet days in 1993.
For those that do not have internet access or who want a book in their
handbag - I intend to continue to publish an anual printed ‘snapshot’ of
the entire Transgender AtoZ website each year.

WHO AND WHAT IS WAYOUT ?
Boys, Girls and Inbetweenies - If you’re new to ‘WayOut’ let me give you a quick introduction.
The WayOut Publishing Co is my company and my name is Vicky Lee and I am the editor of this magazine and
two new books which I am introducing in this magazine. Previously over the last 12 years I have produced an
annual book called ‘The Tranny Guide’ which has been referred to by many on the TG scene as “The Transgender
Bible”. I publish these books and this magazine through Ltd.
The WayOut Club is a promotion founded by myself and Steffan Whitfield in 1992. For over 650 nights we
have hosted a party every Saturday night for boys, girls and inbetweenies.
At The WayOut Club we offer a unique show or event EVERY Saturday and a place to eat, drink, dance and meet
the most diverse crowd of people gathered in one place at one time anywhere in the world.
We are proud that our club attracts every age, race, culture, sexuality and GENDER. The WayOut Club is the
worlds premier place to meet transvestites, cross-dressers,T-Girls, transsexuals, ladyboys, she-males, drag queens,
admirers both male and female, families, partners and friends. Many who enjoy The WayOut Club have visited regularly over many years. Some, like myself, have hardly missed a night - yet we always remember the first time
nerves This has created a relaxed confidant atmosphere where regulars welcome new guests. The non judgmental diversity of the WayOut Club can be a heady euphoric mix. Most tell me, as they leave after their first night,
“I just wish everyday life was as relaxed and comfortable as the atmosphere here at WayOut”.
Our DJs build the night through from a blend of current dance remixes and favourites from the 70’s 80’s and 90’s
into euphoric happy house, chosen to lift your spirit. The dance floor is always busy.
Every week at The WayOut Club we take a break at 2am and clear the dance floor to present a show or event
and every week is different. Most of our shows are, ‘one off - never to be repeated’ productions involving unique
costumes, scenery, props and soundtracks that can only be achieved by the commitment of a wonderful ‘family’ of
performers who just love the opportunity to exhibit their creativity and performance skills. I am proud to be
‘Mum’ to this fabulous family and look forward with my ‘sister’ Steffan to welcome you to the club very soon.

Over 12 years my book ‘The Tranny Guide’ has introduced thousands of people to the transgender scene. There

My new flagship book is called HE or SHE “you get a better view when you sit on the fence”
With the help of contributors from all around the world this book, on its own, is as big as any of my previous
books (and all in full colour with hundreds of pictures). However this book has no listings. Instead this book is
far more auto biographical and includes not just my thoughts and personal experiences but many others. Through
this book I explore every question that I have ever been asked and many more beside. It bulges with a deep level
of advice from me and my contributors on every subject imaginable. A “Relationships” section explores the
thoughts of friends and family. A “Creativity” section looks at the inspiration that transgender gives.to those within and outside the direct experience. This book, which I will be promoting and selling for many years, will in turn
promote the TG AtoZ listing book and website that can turn an understanding into a real lifestyle.

Building on the reputation of my previous books this new title returns to the format of individual listings for
events, shops, services and places to go, from all around the world. This is backed up with Personal Reports and
Personal Profiles from individual reporters. This book is cheaper than my previous books and is the reference
address book / travel guide book to accompany He or She for those that are ready to explore.

A book can be read in private, carried in your handbag referred to in a flash. However once published it begins to
date and the space on the pages is restrictive. I have invested heavily in a new high tech web site that enables
those that provide services and those that use services to update this website at any time. My aim is to provide
the ultimate “TG Bible” on line and to print an annual “snap shot” for those that maintain space in their handbag.
This site will offer interactive News, Listings, Reviews, Reports. This site will be growing throughout the next year.

you arrive at the club you
are magically spirited into
our subterranean,WayOut world, from the smart
street level reception by lift, (or staircase).This
super venue, is in a discreet location, with easy
parking and taxis waiting at the door. We have
wheelchair access.There is a separate changing
area. The venue is air conditioned. The single
level has two areas, a full on dance and cabaret
room, plus a quieter room with plenty of seating
including sofas. In the main room WayOut's DJs
mix music and to suit the mood of the night,
from which can vary between 70's & 80's camp
to the latest euphoric dance music.We encourage gorgeous 'girls' (and boys) to get up and strut
their stuff on the WayOut catwalk.
12th Birthday in 2005 but remains an enigma.
The WayOut Club celebrates its 12th Birthday in
2005 but even after 600 non stop Saturday nights
it remains an enigma. Not quite part of the
London’s gay scene, Not quite part of the
straight scene, Not quite part of the fetish scene
and strangely enough, (in some eyes) Not quite
part of the Transgender scene. So what is The
WayOut Club ?
Few could dispute that The WayOut Club is possibly the most eclectic club in the world bringing
together the most diverse collection of people in
one place. Every Saturday you can find every age,
race, culture, sexuality and every GENDER.
There is only one restriction on entry and that is
that you enter with an open mind. Once in the
club there are no judgments. At WayOut
whether dressed by top designers or Oxfam
everyone wants to be your friend. The club has a
busy dance floor but many come not to dance
but to chat. Some have hardly missed any of the
600 nights at the club.
Joy in diversity.
The WayOut Club was founded by Vicky Lee and
Steffan Whitfield to provide a "way out" for those
that didn’t quite fit in elsewhere especially those
that cross-dressed for whatever reason and those
that were very "in touch with their feminine side"
as well as those that like to mix with them. Vicky
(a self proclaimed transgendered - inbetweeny)
and Steffan (a very open hearted, gay, female
impersonator and entertainer) knew that the
"tranny" scene lacked a weekly opportunity for a
community to grow. From the first night more
than 100 people attended the night and a community did grow. The Transgender scene has
matured over the last 12 years and now offers
many more opportunities. Yet still The WayOut
Club offers something very special and VERY
unique and that is joy in diversity.
A few visitors can be confused by the heady mix
at The WayOut Club. Some may say or do inappropriate things. Sex, Drugs, exposed genitals
and bad (rude) attitude are NEVER acceptable at
WayOut and should be reported to security or
management immediately. Those that ignore this
common decency will be expelled and may be
banned.

is a miracle achieved only by our love for performing and the commitment to giving The
WayOut Club audience something that is fun,
special and unique. There are those that support
Steffan and myself who ensure our continuity and
I would like to take this opportunity to thank
some outstanding support in a difficult year from
Miss Sarah Lloyd, Miss Paula Pure, DJ Titch and
Miss Kit Kat. For my part the effort and the
expense that we have made together brings a
"focus" to a visit to The WayOut Club and make
the night special and "memorable". In our new
diary we define the third Saturday as TEETH TITS
AND TIARA TRIBUTES and the last Saturday as
LETS GO TO THE MOVIES you can expect with
the help of our team to enjoy some outstanding
shows through 2005 into 2006.

many new performers. Our new diary designates
EVERY second Saturday as STAR SEARCH. A
night when YOU can "take to the stage".
Whether you sing, mime, juggle, or have a great

developed her "image" and material and an
enthusiastic regular performer in WayOut shows
and also weekly at Madame Jo Jo’s in Soho.. You

SCENE QUEENS on the first Saturday of the
month as this is the night when we will showcase
a personal appearance by some of the best of
London’s "alternative entertainment".

teffan’s first experience of drag, was entering ‘Night of a thousand
Frocks’ in 1986 at The Hippodrome Leicester Square. One of the
judges at this event was Ron Storme (This event was run by the
wonderful Dennis Gilding who also ran all the famous Porchester Balls
assisted by Ron Storme).
The experience of winning this event so totally changed Steffan’s life
that he longed to re-create it for others to experience. In 1993 Steffan
and Vicky Lee were running ‘Bolts’ at the Hippodrome Leicester Square
and had a free hand to arrange what ever entertainment they could
dream up. Judges and contestants were recruited for the first of
‘Steffan Whitfield’s Alternative Miss London’. Judges included George
Melly (raconteur and jazz singer) and Andrew Logan (artist and originator of Alternative Miss World). ‘Steffan Whitfield’s Alternative Miss
London’ has been dedicated, since his death, to the memory of groundbreaker Ron Storme who helped create Steffan’s first ‘drag’ break.

T
his magazine is blatantly a promotion for the opportunities created
specifically by WayOut. However for over twelve years I have built
what I do on the premise that my series of books, (formerly The
Tranny Guide and in the future He or She and the Transgender AtoZ), must
promote every opportunity I can find, for TG people and friends. I believe in
unique individuals being offered informed choice.
After my twelfth book I seriously considered what I should do to keep my
work fresh, to keep up with technological developments and world events. I
wanted to know how to reach out to more people and to cross-fertilise
ideas from various parts of the world more efficiently.
When I wrote my first book there was no internet and very few ways of
finding anything out, about a subject, which at that time, still had no name.
You could look up ‘transvestite’ or ‘transsexual’ in the library, but there was
very little useful information to be found short of scary "psycho-babel". In
the books that were available at that time, the ‘T’ subject was still talked of
as a sexual act and the concept of a third gender was still a long way off. A
request for waxing at a beauty salon was likely to be met with shocked horror and disclosure to a partner or friend was likely to be met with a complete lack of any understanding. (There were however magazines from the
USA in sex shops that held hope for the future).
After twelve years I knew that I had helped achieve some degree of change
and that I was no longer writing for people who were totally ignorant of the
subject. Yet I believe there are still thousands, maybe millions more people
still to reach out to. People who are unaware of their true potential.
People who have yet to release themselves from the shackles of gender
stereotyping.

An example of the inspirational reporting that you can
find in Transgender AtoZ and my new book HE or SHE

wesome, tha’s what I think of the USA (those early magazines!)
However just based on the size of the population I believed there
must be many, many people who are struggling with transgender concepts. Yet I have had relatively limited success in the USA with my books.
The USA, because of the size of the country, has many events "conferences"
held in hotels. These events provide people the opportunity to fly in from
around the country and immerse themselves for days or weeks in a wide
variety of niche subjects from geeky techncal stuff to various types of
reunions. Compared with the USA, UK hotels have in the past been in short
supply poor quality or expensive. Compared with the USA, it is fairly easy to
get together with like minded others anywhere in the UK in the same day.
Therefore it is not suprising that the biggest Transgender get together in the
UK has been the Beaumont Rotherham weekend which in recent years
attracts maybe 200 people.
In September 2004 I visited SCC (Southern Comfort
Conference) in Atlanta USA. This event runs for a complete week attracts over 700 people and is in it’s 14th
year. I was in awe and I was to be their keynote speaker
at Friday lunch (a grand affair in the biggest ballroom I
have ever seen). I was nervous and in awe. I arrived early
in the week and had many very relaxed chats at the bar
with "old hands" late into the night. I was the new girl in
town and as I expected few knew me or my books. I was
relieved to find that the "delegates" were a very diverse
crowd (much as I meet at The WayOut Club). First time
out Oxfam trannies through always out designer trannies
to politically active transgenderists and pre and post op
transsexuals. Dress varied from fashion accident through
fetish into chic and fabulous. I felt VERY comfortable and
very at home. The week gave me the opportunity to be anonymous and
freshly enquiring, (something I miss at home, being better known and also
tied on Saturdays hosting my own club). I made a lot of friends at SCC and
after giving my talk and performing in their talent show I left a little less
anonymously. I made my plans for the future of my publishing at SCC and I
hope to return soon to launch my new books in the USA.
Previously I have visited the USA on fly drive holidays – straight in and
straight out. (I have lived and worked in California for a three month stay).
But I found on this trip hopping around from city to city by air (Chicago –
Atlanta – Dallas – Las Vegas) how easy it was and relatively cheap and how
BIG the USA is. The conference facilities at the hotel were outstanding and
again relatively cheap.
During my visit there was a lot of coverage on television of the presidential
(Bush – Kerry) election. The SCC delegates wanted to talk about this and

the issues involved (especially because I was British). On election night as I
watched the centre of the USA map turn red with Bush voters I realised that
this vast area of the continent, that I had criss-crossed by plane, held very
few people who could even BEGIN to think about transgender at this point
in world history. My people were in the blue areas around Chicago the West
coast and the East coast. I still believe in truth that there is the same proportion of people with "the transgender gene" as I call it, in the Midwest of
the USA but I know from my bar side and pool side chats at SCC that these
people are drowned in mediocrity and fundamentalism. But even these lost
souls can jump on a plane and go to conferences like SCC and they do.
Someone at SCC said to me cynically, but honestly. "You know, what these
folk are doing, is stepping out of the closet that is their home, to live in a
much bigger closet for a week with hundreds of like minded folk". They say
"folk" a lot in America (smile). In truth this person was right. Apart from the
hotel staff, there were very few "outsiders" to see what was going on within
the walls of that hotel.
Anything they can do we can do .......
This year the UK is about to set a new international
standard for transgender events with SPARKLE
W
ith my experience in Atlanta in mind, I am very proud of the
development here in the UK that has spawned SPARKLE. In
Manchester on the 25th June 2005
Many groups, internet networks, dressing services, clubs, support groups are
joining together to promote and host a day of transgender celebration in and
around Manchester’s Canal Street. This day will have many of the elements
of the SCC event.
SPARKLE will turn the pedestrian area and the many bars restaurants and
clubs in Manchester’s Canal Street area into one big event (that could hardly
be called a closet). An after lunch promenade is expected to take place
through Canal Street to the LGBTG memorial, and onto Piccadilly Gardens
to form a hand held circle around the fountain in comer ration of departed
sisters or those who may be suffering followed by a group photo.
Organisers Kim Angel of UK Angels, and
Bella Jay of Repartee, has drawn a formidable team around them to stage this ambitious event which stands a very good
chance, with your support, to become a
world-wide, first of its kind, which I hope
will become regular feature in our diaries.

about and who and what we are.This is a truly an OUT event and will be
promoted openly for respectful others to join TG people in the streets and
bars. During the day and into the night various TG clubs and networks will
be hosting various bars with TG DJs,TG bands and TG Exhibitions.
Once again I look forward, (somewhat nervously), to addressing a forum as
one of the speakers along side leading UK specialists, consultant psychiatrist
and clinical expert in the field of transsexuality Dr Russell Reid and Bernard
and Terry Reed of the Gender Identity Research and Education Society. I
also look forward to hosting Miss Sparkle one of the two pageant style contests to be held on the day (the other being Miss English Rose).
I feel very proud of my community. I hope the work I have done through my
books and The WayOut Club. over the last 12 years has helped to build the
awareness and confidence that has spawn such evolution and I urge you all to
take part in SPARKLE
