My steward Ron Smith was second to none in his excellent management of the ring and last but not least the exhibitors who brought their dogs (some a considerable distance) for my opinion and the sporting acceptance of same. To the dogs – first the positive, generally coat presentation was excellent, stunning nose pigment (some were almost too black) and some extremely pretty bitches, now the less than positive ‐ tight leads a number were strung up, terrier like, some so high their feet barely skimmed the ground, yes I know it looks professional and it makes a mark in group rings etc, but a well made cavalier shown on a loose lead covering the ground with ease is a joy to watch and mouths, not only were there quite a number of incorrect bites but also dirty teeth and occasionally in relatively young dogs which were otherwise beautifully presented. I was looking for small, well balanced dogs of good breed type, with softness in head and a true “cavalier” temperament and overall I was suitably impressed. My best in Show is almost a veteran and it was good to see a number of older dogs still looking good and enjoying the party! Dogs Minor Puppy 1. Petersen’s Dapsen Destruction Man ‐ first impression is of a beautifully marked tri oozing personality, just naughty enough. Closer inspection revealed a well made and balanced puppy with pretty head moderate neck and good bone. Looked good on the move from all angles, pristine presentation. 2. Egan & Weeks Melloway Hot Property – another impressive baby, 8 months with plushy head and dark pigmentation. Loved the rich chestnut colouring. Compact and balanced body with level topline. Preferred the fuller eye of 1. 3. Schmidt’s Dapsen Make No Mistake – blen with the prettiest of heads and most gorgeous liquid eye, not as positive on the move as above and not the depth of colour. 4. Struthers’ Renascence Tuscan Storm blen with masculine head, dark eye and good nose pigmentation. Well broken coat of a good colour, gave his handler a hard time. Puppy 1. Brimarvan Knls’ Brimarven Cool Hand Luke blen – 10 mnths with masculine head, lovely large, dark round eye and jet nose pigment. Good outline with nicely balanced body and good bone, moved well when settled. 2. Paterson’s Touch O Magic from Droleus (IMP UK) – richly coloured blen again with super eye and nose pigmentation, though would prefer more -9- length to foreface. Held a spirit level topline. Very well schooled puppy. 3. Wynn’s Dunsfold Swing Patrol ‐ tri with good head properties, beautifully presented, but going through the leggy stage at the moment. Junior 1. Brimarven Knls’ Brimarven Icy Reflection ‐ blen oozing breed type, yummy head and expression with large, dark, limpid eye, jet pigment, good ear set. Correct for size, short compact body with good angles, well set on tail. Carrying a well broken coat, complete with lozenge. Showed well and moved with precision. My notes say lovely, lovely, lovely, so guess I liked him. Was considered for top honours, but just felt he needs a little more time. 2. Petersen’s Dapsen A Minute to Win It – another lovely bl, not as forward in head as winner but set with a gorgeous dark eye and jet pigmentation. Liked his size and shape. Well marked rich chestnut coat. Moved and showed well. 3. Petersen’s Dopell Taylor Made ‐ blen, the youngster of this line up and as yet hasn’t the under eye filling and as soft expression as above, but time on his side. Good balance to body, showed well. 4. McInnes Innesveil Classic Romance – lovely blen boy and a fabulous colour. Stronger in head than above and with super pigment, moved ok. 5. Morse & Henderson’s Matmor Don Giovanni ‐ Nice size ruby, liked his head, eye and nose pigment, good ear set, but needs to use them to better advantage. Exuberant personality. Intermediate 1. Taylor’s Dopell Risky Business – handsome blen with gentle expression. Loved his size and shape, good neck, level topline and ample bone. Covered ground and showed well. 2. Clegg & Barras’ Ch Coatesville Foreign Affair ‐ b/t with a gleaming black coat with deep rich tan markings and first rate presentation. Appealing head with dark eye. Enthusiastic attitude. 3. Brooksby & Davies’ Ch Cavashon Make Your Mark – Masculine headed, well broken blen with superb pigmentation. Correct size, good outline, bone and tail set. 4. Brooksby’s Jadelyn Dirty Dancing (Imp USA) – blen with appealing head and good pigment. Short and compact body, well ribbed and with good bone, Moved and showed well. 5. Caribelle Knls Ch Miletree Eclipse (Imp UK) – lovely blen a size up, who just wasn’t in the mood to perform today. Generous head with the most gorgeous eye and gentle - 10 - expression, wonderful feathering to ears. Nicely made all through, moved well enough, saddle markings. Took this placing on his overall quality. Limit 1. Snow’s Brades Eye Candy – masculine blen, with attractive head and gentle expression, large eye, good ear set and lozenge. Good reach to neck, balanced angulation, good topline and bone. Liked his outlook. Super rear movement, better at the front when moved on a slightly slacker lead. 2. Petersen’s Dapsen The Jazzman ‐ Smaller type, with good eye and nose pigment, but not the expression of winner. Again a well made compact body with good outline and positive movement. Deep rich chestnut coat. 3. Daventri Knls Daventri Night Rider – pretty headed tri, with dark round eye, well set on ear and pleasing expression. Balanced body with good angulation looked good in profile. Well marked, not quite as accurate on the move as above. 4. Wyness’ Oronsay Hellraiser ‐ blen with pretty head with soft expression, kindly eye and good ear set though he could use them to better advantage. Liked his size and balance he was well made though out, topped off with good chestnut jacket. Well schooled and handled. 5. Morse & Henderson’s Matmor Duke Ellington ‐ b/t with lovely head with lustrous eye and gentle expression, deep tan and the best presentation. Another well made and with good outline, really covered the ground but if taken at a slightly slower pace, his movement would be easier to assess and would also probably improve the tail carriage. Australian Bred 1. Patterson’s Ch Cabrook Flash Dance ‐ typy blen with dark round eye and soft expressions. Looked a picture going round the ring, right for size, super neck, topline and tailset. Balanced positive movement, good length to his well presented, heavier marked, richly coloured coat, strong contender for top honours. 2. Brooksby’s Gr Ch Cavashon Hallmark ‐ blen just size up from winner, and though better broken markings hadn’t the depth of colour. Stronger in head than above but with flat skull, gorgeous dark eye, soft expression and jet nose pigment. This quality dog has crested neck, good lay of shoulder and level topline, a good mover driving from well let down hocks. 3. McInnes Ch Lacelee Liaison of Love – blen, again stronger in head than winner but set with the loveliest eye and nd good pigmentation. Slightly longer than above and - 11 - though moved well enough, not quite the ground covering action. Wonderfully coloured coat was immaculately presented. 4. Gillies Ch Korgil The Gambling Man – pretty tri, threw a higher placing on his movement by leaning into and behind handler. Loved the size, balance and presentation, nice eye. 5. Micklem’s Bibianna Brandy N Lime ‐ ruby a size up, good colour and bone. Moved ok. Nice topline and tail set, balanced body, large eye, could be a shade darker, jet nose. Open 1. Caribelle Knls Gr Ch Dapsen Make My Day – a lovely small well marked tri with great ring presence, ample coat and good tan. A classic pretty head but with enough masculinity, flat skull, good ear set, beautiful dark eye, jet pigmentation, plushy muzzle and a soft and gentle expression. He has a well made and balanced body which is reflected in his accurate movement, a lovely reachy neck, level topline, good rib and nice bone. A typical cavalier in looks and temperament and at 6 ½ still showed what a star he is. DCC & Best in Show 2. Brooksby’s Gr Ch Cavashon Monogram ‐ blen very unlucky to meet above on such good form. A different type, all male and a size up. But a most appealing masculine head of correct head proportions with super dark limpid eye and soft expression. Again very well made and balanced giving good outline. Well presented, deep chestnut coat, moved with precision. RESERVE DOG CC 3. Egan & Weeks’ Gr Ch Melloway Making Waves – Pretty headed blen with gorgeous dark eye and fabulous well set ears. Well broken markings. Not quite as positive on the move as above and although level whilst in action his topline could fall away when stacked. Look at me attitude. 4. Morris’ Ch Eireannmada Taking Over – glamorous well marked tri of good breed type with pleasing head shape and nice eye. Good neck, would prefer a little more width to chest. Not the ground covering action of winners. 5. Nichols’ Ch Miletree Royalist – Blen of good breed type with correct ear set, dark round eye and plushy muzzle. Liked his overall shape, level topline, good bone and well turned stifle. A little carless with tail carriage on the move. Veteran - 12 - 1. McInnes Innesveil Northern Delight – 8 ½ months fabulous lush head with dark liquid eye and jet nose pigment. Liked her balance, tough competition between these two, winner was just more collected on the move. Richly coloured well marked blen. 3. Nichols & Morris’ Dunsfold Soul Sister ‐ exuberant tri who covered the ground well. Clear cut markings, as yet needs time to fill under eyes, and would prefer brighter tan. 4. Brooksby’s Cavashon You Should be Dancing – sleepy eyed blen. Liked her outline, still needs to fill out, rich colour. 5. Snow’s Chellton Snowdrop – paler blen with lovely dark eye and outgoing temperament, as yet she needs time to come together, but this is a minor puppy class. Puppy 1. Liked her balance, size, shape, good neck, topline, stifle and tail cariage. Showed so well and never put a foot wrong. 2. Fernleigh’s Daventri Caramel Creme – pretty tri with gorgeous head, bright tan and clear cut markings. Well boned, good outline, steady mover, just leaned into her handler on the move in the final cut. Thought her quite lovely, with attitude to match, a bit naughty but oh so nice. 3. Caribelle Knl’s Caribelle Viva La Diva – blen with pretty head, fabulous eye and nose pigment, sweet expression. Not as vivacious as above but a steady mover. Nice in outline, good stifle, as yet needs to body up. Coat of a good colour and sporting a lozenge 4. Well coated with nicely broken markings though not the colour depth of above. 5. Lay’s Marcavan Pink Rose – tri with gentle head, good bone. Very steady on the move but not quite as confident as those higher in the class. Useful bitch. Intermediate 1. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of Victoria Inc 40th Championship Show – 13th June 2011 JUDGE JUNE BARRACLOUGH Best in Show ‐ Oronsay Hellraiser Reserve Best in Show & Best Opposite Sex – Brimarvan Icy Reflection I would like to thank everyone for a wonderful time. Your friendship and hospitality was second to none. I applaud the committee, their friends and helpers for their endless work and support putting on a great 40th Ruby Show. I was really proud to judge it. This was the last day of a really long 4 day weekend and some of the dogs had started to show signs of it and being cooped up in crates. A few had diarrhoea and some others looked tired but never the less they did try their best as always. The dogs all looked very clean and their coats gleamed and well groomed but I got a real shock when I opened a lot of mouths to see horrible, dirty teeth. I don’t think I could have been more surprised if I had seen a really bad under or over shot mouth. This bad dental hygiene had caused a lot of missing teeth in younger dogs that should have had a full set of pearly whites. Another downside was trimming. The breed standard says no trimming, so regardless of the reason this should be obeyed. No dog has perfectly shaped ears or feet. Another thing is eye make up. I did notice that some kind of eyeliner had been used. Are they making cosmetics for dogs now? We have a beautiful breed, not perfect because the perfect dog has not yet been born. To try to achieve perfection we do it through breeding and not by artificial means. - 18 - I hope you will not interpret my comments as criticisms but more like friendly advice. Good luck to everyone and thank you once again for giving me the opportunity to judge your very special cavaliers.
