Real life. Real learning. The State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at
Cobleskill (SUNY Cobleskill) is a nationally recognized educational institution offering over 50 associate
and baccalaureate degrees in agriculture, natural resources, business, and applied arts and sciences.
Nestled in the rolling hills of Schoharie County, SUNY Cobleskill is 40 minutes west of Albany, the state
capital, and three hours north of New York City, and is the only college of agriculture and technology
located in New York State’s Tech Valley. One of 64 higher education institutions in the State University
of New York (SUNY) System, SUNY Cobleskill will celebrate its centennial anniversary in 2016. The
current strategic plan has 8 priorities: Student Success, Community Partnerships, Cultural Competence,
Effective Scholarship, Economic and Environmental Sustainability, Managed Enrollment, National
Recognition, and Solid and Diversified Financial Base. While we have made great strides towards
achieving the outcomes set forth in the plan, two of the top priorities the new president will need to
remain focused on are Managed Enrollment and Solid and Diversified Financial Base.
Academic programs at SUNY Cobleskill are experience-based, and students benefit from small class
sizes and individualized attention in a supportive learning environment. Students live and learn on a
modern, 782-acre campus with outstanding educational facilities that include a working farm and
specialized classrooms and laboratories. Partnerships with business and industry underscore the
College’s emphasis on “real life, real learning,” teaming with the local municipalities to seek solutions
for community issues. Additionally, the campus has advanced Shared Services, a SUNY initiative that has
generated significant savings/cost avoidance and facilitated collaborations which have created efficiencies
and enhanced services. With a nearly $100 million investment in physical facilities, thirty percent of
full-time faculty as recent hires, and new academic programs under development, SUNY Cobleskill has
great positive momentum that makes this point in its history exceptionally exciting and promising.

Academic and co-curricular programs at SUNY Cobleskill emphasize the application of theoretical

Noted accomplishments, facilities, and degree programs include:
• Two Fulbright Scholars, the U.S Government’s top
academic exchange effort.
• A United States Department of Agriculture certified meat processing facility, which is one of a kind within the SUNY system.
• The Beard Wellness Center, which is one of only twenty-college health centers in New York State to be accredited by the American Association of Ambulatory HealthCare.
• A 3200 square foot cold water hatchery with an
adjoining laboratory and a warm water hatchery area
for shellfish, tilapia, and tropical fish.
• The Histotechnician Program, the only program
Nationally Accredited by the Accrediting Agency for
Clinical Laboratory Sciences in New York State.

Capital Improvements
In 2008, SUNY Cobleskill embarked
on a nearly $100 million multi-year
facilities planning and constrution
cycle. Planning included a ten year
Facilities Master Plan to inform
decision making through 2023. Each
construction project aligns with our
emergence as a leader in agricultural
and experiential education.
Highlights of the construction that
has transformed the SUNY Cobleskill
campus include:
Center for Agriculture and Natural
Resources: When completed in August
2014, the new CANR will provide
distinctive facilities for animal science, plant science, and fisheries and
wildlife including 8,000 square feet of
greenhouses, a conservatory, a USDA
meat processing lab, cold and warm
water fish hatcheries, and laboratories for animal science, mammalogy,
herpetology, ornithology, botany, soil
science, and plant pathology.
Alumni Commons Suite and
Townhouse Complex: Opening in Fall
2014, Alumni Commons will be a 158bed housing complex offering juniors
and seniors the option of suite or
townhouse style living on campus.
Site Infrastructure Upgrades: This
project involves improvement and
reconstruction of campus green
spaces, plazas and walkways and
includes a critical upgrade in ADA
accessibility. This work has transformed the area around Knapp Hall,
extending through the campus core
to the historic quad and involves
extensive upgrades around Prentice
Hall.
Water and Storm Sewer
Improvements: Refurbishment of the
campus water storage tank and the
replacement of many of the main water lines throughout the campus will
improve and enhance necessary fire
flow rates and improve water quality.
Frisbie Hall Renovation: One of the
oldest buildings on campus dating
back to 1928, Frisbie Hall was completely renovated, restoring much of
its architectural history.
Wheeler Hall Addition and
Renovation: Renovation of Wheeler
Hall was completed in 2012 and a
new 25,000 square foot addition housing a state of the art biotechnology
laboratory and classroom space was
constructed.
Center for Environmental Science
and Technology: Built to house a
grant funded experimental gasifer, this
building also includes classrooms,
labs, and office space.
Veteran’s Plaza: Designed by a
Landscape Contracting alumnus, the
Veterans’ Plaza graces the entrance
to the main campus. This $50,000
investment is a tribute to military
veterans and features bluestone markers with seals from the five military
branches plus a bluestone bench
inscribed with the words, “In honor
and memory of all those who served
and for the freedom to educate,
inspire, and learn.”
Library Upgrades: The Jared
VanWagenen Library renovation
involved upgrades to building
systems, energy usage enhancements
and cosmetic improvements.
Dairy Complex Upgrades: A new Dairy
Complex lagoon project was constructed, along with a new barn, to house
up to 85 heifers.

At SUNY Cobleskill we encourage our

Our curricula combines the theoretical

Internship Opportunities
Research projects give our students
opportunities to dive into academic
material in a way a textbook never
could. SUNY Cobleskill students are
engaged in research projects often
found at large research universities
and often within their first few years
of study. Some examples of student
research projects include:
SUNY Cobleskill understands how
important internship opportunities
are to students seeking to apply their
academic knowledge in a hands-on,
real-world setting. Students participate in internship opportunities
during the summer or the academic
semester. Opportunities exist locally,
regionally, nationally and internationally. Examples of past student
internships include:
• Students in the Biotechnology
program executed a quantitative
and qualitative assessment of tobacco mosaic virus production in tobacco plants.
• The Fisheries and Wildlife students
researched stream ecosystem changes in the Schoharie Creek tributaries following Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.
• Students in the Department of
Natural Sciences studied the
speleo genesis, also known as
the origin and development of caves, of Secret Caverns in
Schoharie County, New York.
• The Turfgrass Department
performed a mini-sod plot root transplant study.
• Students in the Fisheries and Wildlife program built and tested
an electrified trawl net used to sample benthic fish in areas they can’t go.

In the Center for Environmental
Science and Technology, SUNY
Cobleskill faculty from a variety
of diverse academic departments
work with industry scientists and
technicians, farmers, government
officials and agency professionals
alongside SUNY Cobleskill students. This collaborative effort has
resulted in the CEST becoming
a campus hub for environmental
resources, services and actions.
As a premier center for research
and development, the CEST is the
home of several research ventures,
such as the bioenergy gasification
project. Funded by the U.S. Department of Defense and Department
of Energy, this project investigates
gasification as a means to power
engines and produce electricity.
Another CEST-based research
project is helping to uncover ways
to capture the energy released
during composting for purposes
such as heating buildings or water.
The CEST building was built with
sustainabilty in mind. For example,
storm water collected from the
building’s roof is stored and used
for flushing the building’s toilets.
SUNY Cobleskill is proud to house
the CEST and continues to establish additional environmentally
friendly practices through other
sustainability projects.
Study Abroad – International Opportunities
At SUNY Cobleskill, we encourage our students to participate in the many unique and life changing study abroad
programs that are offered both directly though our campus, as well as through 600 opportunities offered throughout the
SUNY system. Recent programs led by SUNY Cobleskill faculty include opportunities to study in France, Hungary, Costa
Rica, Turkey, Italy, South Africa and Peru. With the assistance of our dedicated and highly knowledgeable study abroad
coordinator, students longing to immerse themselves in another culture can find an opportunity that fits their budget,
timeframe, and desired goals. Faculty-led winter and summer programs, or independent semester or full academic year
programs give students a wide variety of options in regards to the duration of their international endeavors. Students
may fulfill internship requirements through international internship placements.
For students approaching an international experience with a more humanitarian mindset, SUNY Cobleskill offers opportunities for service learning and volunteer work abroad. Here, students are able to attain valuable hands-on experience
while helping others in locations such as Ghana, India, Kenya, Anguilla, and China.
Global Ambassador Network
The SUNY Cobleskill Global Ambassador Network is a program that is exclusively offered through the campus. It
connects past and present SUNY Cobleskill students who studied abroad and international students with current
students who desire to learn about international travel and study.
Civic Engagement - Community Outreach
Connecting the Campus to the Community
At SUNY Cobleskill, we believe it is essential to give back to the
greater community. Through our Center for Community Engagement,
SUNY Cobleskill students, faculty, and staff join community partners
to develop and assist with service projects and educational initiatives
that provide meaningful learning opportunities for our students and
tangible benefits for our partners. The Center for Community Engagement serves as a focal point that sources projects, allocates resources, and promotes the value of community engagement. Highlights of
this volunteerism include:
Community Engagement Day: Teams
of student volunteers complete local
service projects such as: re-roofing
the community garden shed, painting
fire hydrants on Main Street, washing police cars, volunteering at the
animal shelter, and working at the
Landis Arboretum.
Feed the Need: The annual campus
wide community food drive partners with three local businesses –
Cobleskill Regional Hospital, Sterling
Insurance and FAM Funds (Fenimore
Asset Management) to collect food to
donate to area food pantries.
Boxville: A student led initiative, Boxville is an overnight event in support
of the homeless. The evening includes
a documentary on the homeless, card
making for homeless children, and
the creation of personal care/hygiene
kits. Students spend the night sleeping in boxes to gain an appreciation
for people living on the street. Funds
were also raised for the Interfaith
Partnership for the Homeless. There
was also sandwich preparation for a
Mission in the city of Schenectady as
a joint endeavor to this event.
Alternative Spring Break: Students
devoted spring break to serving
disadvantaged youth at the Boys
and Girls Club in Newark, NJ. The
United Way sponsored programming
provided students an opportunity to
connect with inner city youth.
Martin Luther King Six Days
of Service: The MLK Day Celebration
is six days of service, which includes
delivery of frozen dinners to a local
homeless shelter, a trip to process
food donations at the Northeast
Regional Food Bank, craft projects for
sick children, and a partnership with
the Student Government Association
sponsored Red Cross Blood Drive.
Empty Bowls: This event is supported through the collaborative efforts
of the Student Government Association, Cobleskill Auxiliary Services,
culinary arts students and faculty,
and community organizers and
restaurants. It is a community-wide
fundraiser for area food pantries.

a mouse. Orders are placed,
local producers prepare

Intramurals and Campus Recreation
Through the dedicated coordination of staff and student
assistants, SUNY Cobleskill offers students engaging
intramural and campus recreational opportunities. The
College is proud to present students with occasions that
exercise their bodies and initiate enjoyable social interaction
with peers. Our campus recreational opportunities include
open pool hours as well as opportunities for students to use
our gym facilities or on-campus bowling alley. Our highly
popular intramurals are organized team events that include
flag football, volleyball, and bowling tournaments.

SUNY Cobleskill College Council – Ensuring the Best for Our Campus
The SUNY Cobleskill College Council, in accordance with provisions of New York State Education Law, consists of ten
members – nine appointed by the Governor and one elected by and from the student population. A member designated
by the Governor serves as the Council’s Chair. These individuals, who are appointed to seven year terms, exercise
numerous duties that ensure SUNY Cobleskill is an academic institution with the very best to offer its students,
faculty and staff. Responsibilities entrusted within the SUNY Cobleskill College Council are:
• Recommending candidates to the SUNY Trustees for appointment
as president of the college
• Reviewing all major plans of the president and making relevant
recommendations before submission to the Trustees
• Making regulations regarding campus faculty
• Reviewing and recommending institutional budgets
• Fostering development of Citizen Advisory Committees
• Naming buildings and grounds
• Making regulations regarding student conduct
• Exercising supervision of student housing and safety
SUNY Cobleskill College Foundation
The Foundation is a private, non-profit corporation, which exists
solely for the benefit of SUNY Cobleskill. The Foundation directs
the College’s annual fund, major and planned gift fund-raising
activities, and works directly with the College to uphold
educational excellence at SUNY Cobleskill. The Foundation’s
endowment is valued at over $3.6 million and they awarded over
$300,000 in scholarships in 2012-2013.

The SUNY Cobleskill Alumni Association, officially established in
1975 is governed by a board of directors and is a registered 501(c)
(3) corporation with a charter and bylaws. Its purpose is to promote
the College and cultivate communication and fellowship among our
alumni, thereby fostering and maintaining alumni loyalty. The Alumni Association works directly with the College to support academic
and scholastic needs determined by the College. Most recently, the
Alumni Association partnered with the College to build the newest
residence hall, the Alumni Commons, slated to open in fall of 2014.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong allegiance to the College’s overall mission, support diversity,
and reinforce a student-focused environment. S/he must demonstrate strategic planning and implementation skills, be familiar
with the accreditation process, and be committed to academic excellence. The new president will be entrepreneurial and creative.
Additionally, the successful candidate must possess a history of sound financial management, an interest in engaging alumni and
donors, and the ability to create a feeling of collegiality and shared inquiry. This person will be part of an environment committed
to shared governance and transparency; the ability to effectively communicate with the campus, SUNY system administration,
sister institutions, and community leaders is vital. A proven track record of academic and professional experience is required to
lead this public institution of higher learning. A terminal degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
Location: SUNY Cobleskill is situated on a modern, 782-acre campus in Schoharie County. The Town is home to about 7,000
residents and the County, which is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area, is home to about 32,000
residents. Much of the southern portion of Schoharie County lies within the Catskill Mountains, a region known for an abundance
of recreational options, the dramatic landscape, and various historic destinations. Most of the County’s residential population,
including the Town of Cobleskill, resides in the northern part of the County. Schoharie County captures classic American living in
