In the early 1800s, people began moving west to the frontier. Located a day’s ride west from Albany by horse, Esperance and Sharon Springs became important stops for the travelers along the Great Western Turnpike – now designated the Route 20 Scenic Byway. We’ve included as much as we could, but there is even more to see on our website: VisitSchoharieCounty.com The Long Path North is a 350-mile hiking path running from New York City into the Catskills. Our portion passes through Mine Kill Falls State Park and the Blenheim-Gilboa Visitors Center of the New York State Power Authority. The trail then ascends Vroman’s Nose, the promontory that rises 600 feet above the Schoharie Valley, providing a spectacular view. Information in this guide is correct as of 5/1/16. To suggest additions or revisions, contact Schoharie County Tourism at: • 518-296-8991, or • travelguide@ schohariechamber.com Schoharie County offers more contemporary trails as well. The Schoharie Beverage Trail – established just last year – is quickly developing a loyal following of people in search of artisanal and craft beverages. The Schoharie Quilt Barn Trail offers information on and directions to more than 100 unique and colorful quilt-inspired wall decorations. The map on Page 32 shows these trails. Seasonal Hours • Gemstone Mining & Geode Cutting • Howe Caverns Café • Sweet Shop • Motel • Gifts & Souvenirs The first European settlers arrived here in 1712 to work the rich soils of the broad Schoharie Valley. NY State Route 30 – now designated the Timothy Murphy Trail in honor of the local hero of the American Revolution – runs alongside to the Schoharie Creek. Schoharie County Travel Guide and Directory Running south from Sharon Springs, NY Route 10 takes travelers into the wide open spaces of southwestern Schoharie County. Hunting, fishing and birdwatching are popular outdoor activities throughout Schoharie County but especially here in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. Special thanks to Deb Bechtold, Caleb Jacobus, Tom Smith and the many other artists whose photographs help show the beauty and diversity of Schoharie County. Discover. Petrified trees from 300 million years ago provide clues to the geology that has shaped our landscapes. When you visit, you can discover this history in museums from one end of the county to the other. You can learn about the Native Americans who lived in the Schoharie Valley thousands of years ago. Down the road, another museum is filled to the rafters with bugles, beads, buttons, maps and more that tell the story of life in the American colonies. You can tour an 18th century Dutch barn and see a fire engine built before George Washington was born! Our history continues to evolve with the times. As energy conservation and environmental stewardship become ever more important, you can learn how – and why – we make water run uphill. You can interact with exhibits on energy, electricity, and the environment, all designed to spark imaginations and generate fun for people of all ages. Schoharie County is big on the great outdoors as well, with miles of trails for biking and hiking. Hunting, fishing and boating are popular activities for locals and visitors alike. You also can golf, mini-golf, drive go-karts, or sail down a hillside on zip lines. In winter, choose from cross-country skiing, ice fishing, snowshoes or snowmobiling. No visit to Schoharie County is complete without a tour of our underground worlds, two of the largest show caves in the Northeast. In one, take a boat ride on an underground lake... in the other, marvel at a 100-foot underground waterfall. Schoharie County.
