Kent State (4-1; 0-0) travels to Florida for just the second time in school history on Wednesday night to face
South Florida (4-1; 0-0) and former Head Coach Stan Heath. Coming off a 63-44 win over Rochester College
[Mich.] on Sunday, the Golden Flashes are seeking the program’s first 5-1 start since the 2003-04 season. KSU
will be up against a Health led team for the first time since he left the school after leading the Golden Flashes
to a 30-6 record and the Elite ‘8’ in 2002.
Since allowing a season high 87 points in an overtime loss to Green Bay on Nov. 15, the Kent State defense
has given up just 52.5 ppg the last two contests. During the two game span it has been a second half spurt that
has led the defensive stand. On Sunday KSU held Rochester to just one field goal over the last eight minutes
after locking up Youngstown State for an 8:27 stretch without a field goal last Wednesday.
Redshirt junior guard Rodriquez Sherman, has had at least 15 points and four assists in four straight
games. After missing all of last season to injury, Sherman leads the team with 14.8 points, 2.8 assists and
2.0 steals and is second with 5.2 rebounds per game this season. Senior Anthony Simpson has adjusted
to his new role as ‘sixth’ man for the Golden Flashes
averaging 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench Quick Flashes

A 6’6”, 230 lbs forward, DeAndre Nealy signs with Kent State out of Mott Junior College [Mich.]. He capped off a well decorated
2008-09 season by earning NJCAA All-American Honors, on top of his all-region and conference player of the year awards. For the season,
he averaged over 15 points and eight rebounds and led all levels of college basketball with an astounding 7.6 blocks per game.
A product of Detroit Central, Nealy averaged 16 points and helped lead Mott to a 35-2 record and the 2008 NJCAA National
Championship, where was named all-tournament MVP as a freshman. After taking Mott to a 29-6 mark last season, he was ranked
the No. 26 junior college recruit in the country by Rivals.com and was the top rated NJCAA Division II player. “DeAndre is a very athletic
post player who comes from a great junior college program coached by legendary Steve Schmidt,” said Ford. “He is a tremendous shot
blocker with great timing and a good rebounder that should have a positive effect for our program on the defensive end.”
Carlton Guyton, is a 6’4”, 180 lbs long, athletic guard that had a huge summer for his Illinois Ice and Bobcat AAU squads. In four
games this season, he leads Mineral Area College with 13 points per game including a season-high 21 in a 68-66 loss to No. 6 ranked
Southwestern Illinois College in the Cardinals last game.
“Carlton is a multi-talented perimeter player who can play all three wing positions on offense and defense, said Ford. “He is
unselfish with great vision and the ability to create his own shot at anytime. With the departure of our current perimeter players to
graduation, he has the opportunity to come in and contribute right away.”
Starting the final 15 games of last year, he helped lead his team to a 19-12 record and a Region XVI Championship game appearance.
As a high school senior at Rich South in Chicago, Guyton averaged 17.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and shot over 75 percent
from the foul line while earning all-conference honors.
A 6’4”, 180 lbs guard, Eric Gaines averaged 13 points last season for Hillcrest High School. A versatile, athletic wing that can play
the shooting guard or small forward, he is ranked as one of the top 20 recruits in the class of 2010 for the state of Illinois. Known for
his defensive versatility, Gaines also runs the floor well in transition. In addition to his 13 points, he littered the stat sheet with 3.1
assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.3 steals per game last season for a team that went 20-10.
“I saw Eric play this summer and was extremely excited about him. He is the type of guard that excels in the Mid-American
Conference because he is long, can handle the ball, and has good size for a perimeter player,” said Ford. “As he works on his outside
shot and skill set, he will become an excellent player for us and we are very excited to have him at Kent State.”
A local product from nearby Jackson High School, Mark Henninger is a 6’8”, 190 lbs forward that averaged over 20 points and
eight rebounds a game last season. In addition to Federal League Player of the Year honors, he was also named special mention
all-state while playing for Mark Fuline. A player with a high basketball IQ, Henninger has the ability to stretch the defense with his
jump shot and can finish around the rim.
“Mark is somebody that we have recruited for over two years now and we are thrilled he choose to come to Kent State,” said Ford.
“We are extremely excited that a local player of his caliber chose to come to KSU. He is a great student that comes from a great family
and will be an excellent representative of our university.”
Knight is a 6’7”, 205 lbs forward playing for Aiken High School in Cincinnati this season. A high energy post player, he is extraordinarily
active around the basket on both ends of the floor. Coming off a very good AAU season, Knight played with the Queen City Prophets
for coach Ozzie Davis and really matured as a player. After transferring from Winton Woods High School, Knight sat out last season. A decent shooter with range to hit the outside shot, he was rated among the top 2010 players in the state of Ohio.
“Kenny is a great athlete very assertive on the glass that should really blossom in our program,” said Ford. “He is your
prototypical MAC four-man, who plays with a lot of passion and can have an impact on the game by blocking shots, rebounding and
defending.”
Game 6 at South Florida
www.kentstatesports.com Kent State’s Last Time Out... (11/22/09)
Kent State 63 - Rochester 44
KENT, Ohio — After a closely contested game for
34 minutes, Kent State held Rochester without a
point for almost six points as the Golden Flashes
(4-1) defeated the Warriors (6-6), 63-44, in the final
game of the Hispanic College Fund Classic at the
M.A.C. Center Sunday night.
Redshirt junior Rodriguez Sherman
(Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) paced KSU with 15
points and four assists. Senior Anthony Simpson
(Rockford, Ill./Highland C.C.[Ill.]) came off the bench
and recorded his third double-double at KSU with
12 points and 10 rebounds, while fellow senior
Mike McKee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) added 12
points.
“Anthony had a good game for us and has
really stepped since coming off the bench the past
two games,” said Head Coach Geno Ford. “It was
his idea to make the switch from a starter. He is
an unselfish kid and is one of those guys who just
wants to win.”
Kent State and Rochester battled back and
forth throughout the entire first half. The Golden
Flashes led for most of it but could not stretch the
lead beyond seven points as they entered the break
up 28-24.
KSU finally started to break away as the blue
and gold opened the second half on a 12-1 run.
Senior Tyree Evans (Richmond, Va./Motlow C.C.
[Tenn.]) led four Flashes that scored during the run
with six points over the stretch to extend the lead
to 15.
The Warriors would chip away at the deficit
and managed to get the advantage down to six with
just under eight minutes remaining in the game.
However, the KSU defense would hold the Warriors
to just one field goal the rest of the way as they
closed the game on a 15-2 run. McKee scored the
first four points of the stretch before Sherman took
over with seven of the next nine points.
“I thought we really guarded well and made
some hustle plays in the second half, particularly
(senior forward) Frank Henry-Ala who had made
some key steals and had a number of other
deflections,” said Ford.

Evans TAgged as One of the NAtion’s
Top Shooters By Fox Sports.com
Kent State fans are well aware of the shooting
exploits of senior guard Tyree Evans. This preseason
his talents were recognized by FOXsports.com’s
senior college basketball writer Jeff Goodman who
selected Evans as the 38th best shooter on his list of
the country’s top 50 shooters. In addition, Evans was
also tagged in a list of ‘Mid-Major Players to Watch’
by ESPN.com under the ‘Don’t Forget About These
Guys’ category
• Evans has lived up to Goodman’s billing shooting
41 percent (12-29) from three this season.
• Twice already this year Evans had connected on at
least four three-pointers in a single game.
FeEling Special
• Kent State has had that special feeling this season.
The Golden Flashes have a +6.0 points per game
or more margin in four different specialty stat
categories this season.
• Points in the paint (+6.0), Points off turnovers
(+7.0), Second chance points (+8.4), Bench points
(+6.4).
Dialing in From Downtown
The Golden Flashes have made a three-pointer
in 333 consecutive games. The last time KSU did
not make at least one three in a game was the first
game of the 1999-2000 season against Youngstown
State (0-9).
The Golden Flashes Nickname
The origin of the nickname “Golden Flashes” has
been a topic of debate. According to documentation
in Phillip Shiver’s book, The Years of Youth, widely
regarded as historically correct, the reason for Kent
State’s nickname is noted in a letter to Linda Baughman, dated Aug. 6, 1959. Merle Wagoner recalled that
the change in the name of Kent State athletics teams
from “Silver Foxes” to “Golden Flashes” occurred in
1926 after the dismissal of President John E. McGilvrey
(Kent State’s first nickname originated from McGilvrey,
who had a silver fox farm east of campus).
With Acting President T. Howard Winters providing
the impetus, a contest was held (with a $25 first prize)
to select the new name. No special significance was
attached to the winning suggestion, which was used
first in 1927 by the basketball team after it had been
approved by the student body and the faculty athletic
committee. Also laying claim to the origin was Oliver
Wolcott, one-time Kent State grid great who played
center on the 1921 and 1922 teams. As former sports
editor of the Kent Courier Tribune, the local newspaper,
the name “Silver Foxes” seemed pretty frail to him. So,
during the 1927 football season, he began referring
to the team as “Golden Flashes.”
The School Colors
Kent State’s school colors are blue and gold —
purely by accident. In the 1910 state charter, the
school colors were orange and purple. However, a local
laundry changed the colors. The basketball uniforms,
orange and purple when they went into the hot water,
came back gold and blue-black. Word has it that the
team and student body liked the new colors so well
they adopted them as the new school colors.
Italian Tour Helps Prep Kent State for 2009-10 Season
• With only the 10 returners allowed to compete, the Golden Flashes compiled a 3-1 record during a fourgame overseas trip against Italian professional teams at the end of August.
• Tyree Evans led KSU with 16.8 points per game during the trip, while Rodriquez Sherman contributed
15.5 points, 5.0 assists and 3.3 steals a contest.

eno Ford is set to launch his second season as Head Coach
after taking the reigns of the program last year when he
became the 23rd head coach in the 93-year history of Kent
State basketball.
In just the first season under his supervision, the KSU program led the Mid-American Conference in scoring
for the first time since joining the league 57 years ago. The team also shot a conference-best 44 percent from
the field to become just the second team to top the MAC in the category in consecutive years since 1978.
With a 19-15 overall record, the Golden Flashes capped off the year with a berth in the inaugural
CollegeInsider.com Tournament to give the program a 10th postseason appearance in 11 years including all
five seasons Ford has been on staff. The regular season was highlighted by an eight-game wining streak - the
longest by KSU since 2003-04 and a 10-6 conference record.
The 19 victories also had Ford ranked among the top head coaches in the nation. The Kent State mentor
racked up the third most wins by a first-year Division I head coach last year and was ninth in the country
among head coaches in their first year at a new school.
Academically the Golden Flashes were also highly successful as five student-athletes were honored at
the 26th Annual Judith K. Devine Athletic Academic Honors Dinner including four who received Academic
Athletic Excellence Awards. The academic achievements were felt immediately under Ford’s regime as the
team produced its highest fall semester grade point average ever.
No stranger to KSU’s commitment to excellence, he has helped lead the program to a 92-38 (.708) record
during his two previous tenures on the coaching staff. Ford rejoined the Golden Flashes in 2007-08 after
spending the prior two seasons as the head coach at Muskingum. Immediately after returning to the KSU
family last summer, Ford led the Golden Flashes’ recruiting efforts of 2008 Mid-American Conference Player of
the Year, Al Fisher. Led by Fisher, Kent State went 28-7 and 13-3 in the MAC winning both the regular season
and tournament titles. In Ford’s first stint on the staff from 2002-05, KSU won over 20 games each season,
qualified for three straight National Invitational Tournaments and won a pair of MAC East Division titles.
A Cambridge, Ohio native, Ford started his career as a college head coach at Shawnee State University in
2001-02, earning American Mideast Conference Coach of the Year honors in his lone season.
Ford began his coaching career at his alma mater, Ohio University, under current Western Carolina Head
Coach Larry Hunter. He served as a graduate assistant for one season (1998-99) and was promoted to
assistant coach, where he remained for
two more seasons. In all, he has built an

Kent State Picked Second Pre-Season MAC
Media Poll
The preseason favorite the past two seasons, the Golden
Flashes were picked to finish second in the 2009-10 Mid-American
Conference Men’s Basketball Preseason Poll. The poll was
determined by the MAC News Media Panel.
Kent State reached the postseason for the 10th time in 11 years
last March and finished the season with a 19-15 overall record and a
10-6 mark in the MAC. The Golden Flashes welcome back six seniors among the eight letterwinners from last
season. Akron was picked to win the East Division, followed by KSU, Buffalo, Miami, Bowling Green and Ohio.
On the West side Central Michigan was picked to finished first after claiming a share of the division title last
season. CMU is followed by Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Ball State, Western Michigan and Toledo.
Singletary Named Preseason All-MAC
KSU senior guard Chris Singletary was named to the preseason all-conference team. An Honorable Mention
All-MAC player the last two seasons, Chris Singletary is KSU’s leading returning scorer with 12.1 points per
game. Last season he was one of only three players in the league ranked top 10 in assists and steals. He was
joined on the East Division Preseason Squad by Miami’s Kenny Hayes, Akron’s Brett McKnight, Buffalo’s Rodney
Pierce, and Akron’s Anthony Hitchens.
Sherman Picks Up MAC POW Honors (11/16)
After earning MVP Honors at the Hispanic College Fund Classic by averaging 14.7 points, 5.7 rebounds

November 13, 2009
M.A.C. Center (3,618)
Kent, Ohio
After trailing for almost
the entire first half, Kent State
used a 20-1 run to start the
second to outlasted Samford,
69-66 in the season opener for
both teams.
Down three (34-31) at
halftime, Kent State stormed
out of the gate due to increased
defensive intensity and points
off turnovers. Chris Singletary
had six of his game high 19
points during the stretch, while
freshman Randal Holt had backto-back lay-ups to cap the 20-1
run.
Samford would cut the
deficit down to five, but Justin
Greene scored six straight points
for KSU to push the lead back to
double figures with just under
four minutes remaining

Bryquis Perine’s desperation
heave as time expired in overtime
somehow found the bottom of the
net as Green Bay stunned Kent
State at the M.A.C. Center.
After Rodriguez Sherman
converted a lay-up with 2.3
seconds left in overtime to give
the Golden Flashes the lead, it
looked like KSU would remain
undefeated. However, Perine
grabbed the ball after a scrum
for it and hit a three to give Kent
State a heartbreaking loss.
Green Bay was up by as
many as 15 points and would
hold the lead around double
digits for much of the second
half, before Chris Singletary
made a lay-up with two seconds
left to tie the game to cap off a
comeback. In the extra session,
the team’s battled back and forth
with neither taking a lead of more
than two points.

Kent State
63
November 22, 2009
M.A.C. Center (2,433)
Kent, Ohio
After a closely contested
game for 34 minutes, Kent State
held Rochester without a point
for the final six minutes.
Up 28-24 at halftime, KSU
finally started to break away with
a 12-1 run to open the second
half. Senior Tyree Evans led four
Flashes that scored during the
run with six points over the
stretch to extend the lead to 15.
The Warriors would chip
away at the deficit and managed
to get the advantage down to
six with just under eight minutes
remaining in the game. However,
the KSU defense would hold the
Warriors to just one field goal
the rest of the way as they closed
the game on a 15-2 run. McKee
scored the first four points of
the stretch before Sherman took
over with seven of the next nine
points.
