WELCOME to Leigh...
LEIGH and its neighbouring communities of
Tyldesley, Atherton, Astley, Lowton, Golborne and
Hindley cover the bulk of the western portion of
Wigan Borough which has a total population of
around 322,900*.
Once a stronghold of the coal mining, textile and
engineering industries it is within easy reach of
major communication routes. Leigh is earmarked
for reconnection to the rail network with plans for
a new station in the pipeline to complement two
stations at Atherton on the Wigan-Manchester
line.
Leisure is high on the priority list for an area
that is on the doorstep of major conurbations
Manchester, Bolton and Warrington. The Leigh
Sports Village and neighbouring Wigan and
Leigh College are landmark state-of-the-art
developments just a stone’s throw from one of the
region’s best known country parks - Pennington
Flash and the sporting theme continues with
Haydock Park race course.
With the Bridgewater and Leeds-Liverpool canal
running through the heart of the town, and a
new marina created alongside the canal on the
former colliery site at Plank Lane, the area is at the
centre of the heritage trail that runs from Wigan
Pier to the Manchester Ship Canal at Barton
Aqueduct taking in the towering headgear at
Astley Green Colliery mining museum.
Leigh Sports Village is home to professional rugby
league side Leigh Centurions and the base for
Leigh Harriers Athletic Club which has been
nurturing athletes to Olympic standards for 126
years.
Development plans are being drawn up that
could see around 5,000 new homes built in the
area within the next 15 years. Leigh has been
rejuvenated by town centre investments offering
shopping and leisure facilities almost alongside its
popular indoor market and traditional high street
businesses.
